ews that a suspected drink-driver had killed three young siblings and their cousin while they were out on an evening walk on Saturday shook the nation. “The community is heartbroken over this tragic loss,” Fat Pizza actor Rob Shehadie, who is friends with one of the affected families, tells WHO. “This has not only hit the local community but every home in Australia. Everyone has hugged their kids a bit more.” On the balmy evening, Danny Abdallah, 41, and his wife, Leila, 34, headed out to a relative’s 21st birthday party and left their six children and their cousins with an aunt. As the sun set, three of the Abdallah kids – Antony, 13, Angelina, 12, and Sienna, 9 – went for a stroll with their cousin Veronique Sakr,

As the family made their way down the footpath, a Mitsubishi Triton, allegedly driven by builder Samuel Davidson, 29, sped into view, mounted the kerb and careered into the seven children. Antony, Angelina, Sienna and Veronique died at the scene. Davidson, who was uninjured, was breath-tested and reportedly returned a reading of 0.150, three times the legal limit. “I’ve known the Abdallahs for about two years, and they are such a loving and caring family,” Shehadie says. “They didn’t deserve this tragedy, and that’s why we need to stand up as a country and start changing the drinking and drug culture. Part of the fallout is down to a five-page letter the duchess wrote to him, pleading for him not to keep talking to the media and saying he had “broken my heart into a million pieces”. He responded by releasing some of the letter to the media. Meghan then launched a breach of privacy suit against The Mail on Sunday for publishing it. s one half of the show’s first lesbian couple, vegan bartender Tash Herz had high hopes that the experts would match her with a woman she could spend the rest of her life with. It hasn’t been an easy journey for the Adelaide resident when it comes to successful partnerships, with her most serious relationship lasting four years, on and off, but filled with dark times. “My last ex really didn’t treat me very well,” Tash, 31, tells WHO. “It was very toxic but also a very strong love.” Things looked up for the yoga instructor’s love life when she was paired with personal trainer Amanda Micallef, but while their wedding was filled with sparks, the reality of going through with a TV wedding to a complete stranger set in early on in the experiment. “You do get swept up in the moment and then when you wake up the next day, there is a very big reality check,” Tash says. And it’s not just impressing Tash that any potential suitor has to worry about, as Amanda, 34, found out when she came face-to-face with her new bride’s very judgemental and very protective bridesmaids at the reception. “I think (bridesmaid) Ashlee just wants the right fit for me. She’s very protective,” says Tash of her close friend, who started off as an enemy because they had both dated the same girl. “She knows me very well and she doesn’t trust people easily at all.” Having dealt with bullying over her weight and bisexuality in her teen years,
Tash says she grew up feeling “a lot of shame around my sexuality”. “I had my first sexual experience with a girl when I was 13, so I was bullied for being a lesbian, because back then it was really taboo,” she says. “Then when I went to high school I was bullied by boys for being fat and ugly.” With support from her parents and like-minded friends, Tash is now confident and comfortable with her sexual orientation, which she admits is “shades of grey”. “I haven’t dated a boy since I was 17, when I met a girl and fell crazy in love and I left my boyfriend for her!” she says. “The chances of me dating a man again are literally one in 50 billion – I am almost exclusively physically attracted to women, but I am capable of having deep, romantic connections with men.”

Will Hayley (left) and Stacey (right) be involved in drama this year?
She was the most controversial bride on MAFS last year, and Jessika Power couldn’t wait until the new season aired before stirring up drama. Taking to Instagram last week, Jess sparked a feud with this season’s Stacey Hampton, a 25-year-old law graduate whom she has accused of poorly treating Hayley while they were filming the show together. The day before her rant on social media, Jess, 27, posted a story of her partying with Hayley, 32, in Melbourne. Next to two pics of Stacey, Jess wrote, “What I see here is a girl who’s 25, gone on this show and just gaslighted the s--t out of [Hayley], who has actually worked her entire a-s off to be fit, healthy and brought herself out of the darkest of places all to be labelled and slandered by someone who is clearly insecure that someone may bag more ‘airtime’ than her.” Hayley has been open about her decadelong drug addiction, which she overcame six years ago by throwing herself into fitness.

Two months on since the outbreak of the deadly coronavirus, more than 17,000 cases worldwide have been confirmed and over 400 deaths. For Wenbo Yu, the last few weeks have been a nightmare with his wife and children, aged 7 and 4, stuck in the city where the virus has spread to thousands of people. His desperate attempts to get them out were
frustrated as the Chinese Government effectively isolated Wuhan from the rest of the world by closing down the airport and railways stations. “Panic surged immediately,” Yu tells WHO on Monday, explaining that like many others, his family also “isolated themselves all day inside, my wife is so stressed”. Actress Jameela Jamil has continued to call out the Kardashians on social media. In the past she’s called Kim a “terrible and toxic influence on young girls” and has dubbed the family “double agents for the patriarchy” because they are “selling us self-consciousness”. A particular bugbear for the Good Place actress is Khloé Kardashian’s continued promotion of quick-fix weight-loss ‘tummy tea’. Recently she commented: “Are you poor?” on one post. She followed up with her own impassioned Instagram rant. “These products cannot make you look the way these women do,” she wrote. “You know what makes these women look the way they do? Personal trainers. Chefs, nutritionists, Photoshop, plastic surgeons – all of which they are able to afford from the money that they receive from selling you these diet and detox products that have nothing to do with their aesthetic … Don’t use products sold to you by celebrities. These people use plastic surgeons and don’t admit to it, so you can’t trust them now that they’re not transparent. That’s just how I feel about it. These absolute f--ckers.”

he’s jumped from one turbulent relationship to another for most of her life, and Pamela Anderson, 52, shows no sign of changing her ways any time soon. After announcing last week that she had secretly married Man of Steel and Batman producer Jon Peters in an intimate ceremony in Malibu on January 20, on Sunday she revealed that they have already split up. In a statement to the Hollywood Reporter, the now fives-times-married star said she had been moved by the “warm reception” to her wedding, then added: “We would be very grateful for your support as we take some time apart to re-evaluate what we want from life and from one another. Life is a journey and love is a process. With that universal truth in mind, we have mutually decided to put off the formalisation of our marriage certificate and put our faith in the process. Thank you for respecting our privacy.”
PAM’S EX FILES TOMMY LEE
Passionate but volatile from the start, Anderson’s marriage to the famous drummer started just 96 hours after their first date in February 1995, with the couple saying ‘I do’ on a beach in Mexico. They welcomed son Brandon in June 1996, and Dylan the following December, but the relationship was fraught with scandal, from their infamous sex tape leaking to Lee doing six months behind bars for assaulting Anderson. They divorced in 1998.

She then abruptly caught a flight to her native Canada, refusing to comment further. The couple first dated in the mid 1980s, enjoying a brief fling after meeting at the infamous Playboy Mansion. “I walked in and saw this little angel sitting at the bar. I knew she’d be a big star. Pamela has never seen her full potential as an artist,” Peters, 74, declared after their marriage became public. “She has yet to shine in a real way. There is much more to her than meets the eye, or I wouldn’t love her so much. There are beautiful girls everywhere. I could have my pick, but for 35 years I’ve only wanted Pamela!” It had been love at first sight for Peters, who believed in the then 19-year-old’s star potential so much, he paid for her to have acting lessons before her big break on Baywatch, and was so besotted, he proposed to her, only to be declined. Despite going on to marry four times, Peters never stopped pining for Anderson. “I protect her and treat her the way she deserves to be treated,” the A Star Is Born producer said. Multiple women have accused him, and in 2006, his former assistant Shelly Morita brought a damning lawsuit against him, which he settled for $US3.3 million, after she claimed he climbed into bed and fondled her. you have to get the juggle right – you lose a lot of your time. I’m a bit all or nothing, so if I’m losing the exercise a little bit, I’m probably not as diligent with my food. I lost my way for a little while. How did you get back on track? I said to Snez before Christmas, “From Boxing Day onwards I’ve got to get back on it”. I was feeling a bit lethargic and a bit yuck. I wasn’t in shocking shape, but I probably put on four or five kilos that didn’t need to be there. In the past month I’ve been better for sure. Dad bod is real! It’s so hard, especially with more than one child. If you’re doing exercise, you’re feeling guilty because you probably should be helping, so then you start to help. And then you get

which would normally make you feel a bit better. It’s genuinely a tough balance. Being able to do workouts at home, or just going for a run, is quick and easy instead of having to make time to go to the gym. Having an hour or an hour and a half to go and spend at the gym is just never going to happen. What can you tell us about your new role on Better Homes and Gardens? They’ve obviously brought me on for a reason, because there’s so much confusion out there about how to eat right or what exercise is better than another. And most importantly, it’s not what you talk about, it’s how you talk about it. It needs to be stuff that people can begin applying to their lives tomorrow. If you get too scientific or it’s too intense, people just put it in the too-hard basket and then you’re not necessarily helping them in any way. Will the family be involved in the show? We’re actually filming at home tomorrow. Snez and I came up with a list of things that we thought were important to share with

p people, and we started filming last week. I would never get the family involved in a way that made them feel uncomfortable. But if it’s a natural fit, or Willow’s having B ffun, or it’s something relevant to Eve, then we’re happy to film some workouts or w ccooking segments at our house. Why was Better Homes the right show for you? There have been plenty of weird and wonderful requests or emails come through in the last five or so years but I’ve always said I don’t want to do TV for TV’s sake. I only wanted to do something if it was in line with something I do day in, day out. We don’t often see you at events any more. Was that a conscious decision? We don’t really get caught up in that sort of stuff. People have stopped inviting us, to be honest. The amount of times I’ve had to politely decline … How did you come to that decision? We have kids! We have a teenage daughter and a 2-year-old and a 1-year-old. We don’t want to do that stuff. We love that we have this great job where we can help people get into shape, and we are all about our family. If we have a spare weekend, we don’t really want to go to a party, we might go to Tassie so the kids can see their grandparents. It’s all about priorities and time management
around your priorities. It’s good that Snez and I are so aligned on that. When we first met each other on the show, one of the things we talked about was the importance of family and how much we wanted to grow a family. We were both being completely honest, and things panned out that way. How is your relationship going now that you are a family of five? Snez is the best mum ever. Of course, there are times when she gets a bit cranky that I’m working too much and wants me to be home a bit more, but that’s OK. When that happens, we communicate and try to shift things around. If you say yes to too many events and that other stuff, you’re not spending time with your kids. A lot of those people don’t have kids. [Having kids] changes everything and your priorities shift. That other stuff suddenly seems a whole lot less important. Snez and I both turn 40 this year and as much as we’re both probably not excited about it, you grow up a little bit. How do you feel about turning 40? It makes you reflect a little bit. It is a milestone turning 40 and we’ll probably have a big joint 40th at the
end of the year once things settle down a little bit. I’m already going grey! Snez likes to remind me I’m 5 months older than her, so maybe combining our 40ths is my way of dealing with that. ■ By Holly Richards Better Homes and Gardens returns Friday, February 7, 7pm on Channel Seven.

ver since she founded the lifestyle and wellness company Goop 11 years ago, Gwyneth Paltrow has faced criticism from medical professionals over its pseudo-science claims, lawsuits for false advertising, and ridicule products including vampire dust and healing crystals. Critics point out that many of her lines make claims that simply aren’t true, or are based on debunked theories, but their warnings fall on deaf ears as the company grows to be worth more than $370 million and Paltrow’s army of fans crave more. But the new six-part Netflix doco The Goop Lab, which launched last month with Paltrow perched on a pink labia-shaped lounge telling viewers she is going to “milk the s--t out of life”, has faced a barrage of condemnation. The Guardian gave it one star and declared: “This whole show is a demented paean to self-indulgence,” adding that Paltrow is “alarmingly ignorant”. NBC News called it “dangerous” and “all kinds of awful”. Top US gynaecologist Dr Jen Gunter slammed Paltrow, 47, for pushing medical ideas that hadn’t been properly tested. “This looks like classic Goop: some fine information presented alongside

rowing up, Aidy Bryant had no shortage of laughter in her Phoenix, Arizona home. “My parents are funny, my brother is funny, and they were always making each other laugh,” she recalls. “So I was like, ‘I want to get in on that.’” But it wasn’t until high school, when she began performing in theatre and improv, that Bryant found she had a knack for comedy. “There was a natural rhythm to it,” she says, adding, “I don’t know if I was any good … but I was getting laughs!” Today the Emmy-nominated Saturday Night Live star, 32, is still getting laughs – but from a much bigger audience. And, thanks to her comedy series Shrill (stream now on SBS On Demand), Bryant feels increasingly empowered. “It’s changed my life in a lot of ways,” she says of the hit show on which she serves as co-creator, producer and star. “Mostly just in what I think I’m capable of. I don’t know if I was always the ‘I can do this’ kind of person; instead I would say, ‘I’m going to try.’ But now, I feel like ‘I can do this.’ In a good way.” That boost of confidence is especially sweet since Bryant never dreamt she’d succeed in the comedy world. After graduating from Columbia College in Chicago, she toured with musical improv groups before SNL came calling in 2012. “Auditioning for the first time, I was like, ‘This is the coolest thing I’ll ever do,’” she says. “I didn’t think it would go further.” Now, in her eighth season, Bryant has solidified her status as one of the show’s pillars. Still, she says Shrill (which is co-produced by Lorne Michaels and Elizabeth Banks) helped redefine how she felt about herself in a key way. Based on Lindy West’s book of the same title, the series stars Bryant as Annie, whom Hulu describes as “a fat young woman who wants to change her life – but not her body”. When Bryant first read the memoir in 2016, it struck a chord. “Lindy had so perfectly verbalised stuff I had been thinking my entire life but never said out loud,” she says. “I was so inspired by the
point of ‘I’ve spent so much of my life trying to fit into a system that wasn’t built for me, and it doesn’t define my value as a person.’ I was like, ‘I agree. There’s nothing wrong with me. I’m good. I like myself.’” Bryant says the response from fans has been amazing. “I definitely assumed that young fat women would identify with it, but it’s really been a whole range of men, women, thin, fat,” she says. “People can relate to being really hard on themselves, being their own worst critic and being trapped in that mindset and wanting to get out of it. That is really universal.” With Season 2 out now, Bryant has been busy juggling both shows – and that’s perfectly fine with her. She and her husband of nearly two years, writer and performer Conner O’Malley, are content to savour newlywed life just as it is – while tentatively planning on adding even more to their schedules. “I definitely want to have kids,” says Bryant. “I’m working really

meeting because I wasn’t ready to show myself. It was very hard because in this film I show who I truly am. I wanted the world to see that there are a lot of misconceptions. I’ve been judged based on a character that I created in the beginning of my career. An earlier TV series, The World According to Paris, had the same premise of getting to know the real you. How is this one different? HILTON This is completely different than anything I’ve ever done. This is a real film that Alex (the director) and I have been shooting for a year now, following me in my real life. Anything I’ve ever done before was more of me playing that character again. [This time] I really wanted to show my real life, talk about things that are hard to talk about and discuss things I’ve experienced that I’ve never discussed before. It sounds like a brave step to take. How did the documentary actually come about? DEAN I had just made Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story, and that film is about a woman who had always just been known for her face. HILTON I feel I’ve gone through a lot in life and I think everything in life happens for a reason. So I have no regrets because I was having fun with it. You know, I was in on the joke. MARTY & BOBBY THE MOVIE DREAM TEAM
Scorsese and De Niro, both Italian Americans who grew up in downtown Manhattan, first teamed up for the 1973 crime drama Mean Streets and have gone on to make nine films together. “Marty is a filmmaker who breaks boundaries in cinema,” De Niro said when presenting his friend with an award at the Palm Springs Film Festival on January 2. “He still manages to be completely original every time he steps behind the camera.”

He takes what actors give him and uses it,” he says. De Niro says it was Cooper who persuaded him to take on the role of talk-show host Murray Franklin in the $1 billion hit Joker. “Bradley was one of the producers, and he told me to do it. He’s really terrific. What he did with A Star Is Born, the way he worked on it quietly by himself, put it together, found the right actors, the right people … When you know what you want to do, that’s a great thing, and you know it’ll be special.”

he last two years have been traumatic and painful for Lena Dunham, but they have also given her the strength to embrace a new single and sober lifestyle and find the happiness she has sought for so long. Her split from her long-term boyfriend, Jack Antonoff, in 2017 was followed by a spell in rehab for a reliance on prescription drugs while recovering from a hysterectomy to relieve the crippling symptoms of endometriosis. She was also diagnosed with fibromyalgia, a chronic condition causing pain and fatigue, as well as connective-tissue disorder Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, which at times meant she could only get around with the help of a walking stick. “I realised I wasn’t just taking medication for physical pain. I was taking it for the emotional pain too,” the 33-year-old writer, actress and producer reveals in the latest edition of Cosmopolitan.“And then suddenly, especially this stuff, the benzos [anxiety medication benzodiazepines], it changes

I felt nothing. I didn’t want to live.” As she grappled with her demons and the emotional breakup with Antonoff, frontman of indie band The Bleachers, she kept dating, even briefly getting engaged to a lover who proposed with a Timberland bootlace while they were snowed in at her parents’home. “I’d just had a hysterectomy, I’d broken up with my boyfriend, I was in the process of breaking up with my business partner – I had no business buying a pair of shoes [let alone] getting engaged,” she says.“Then I just went, ‘You know what? It means I’ve taken a hiatus from dating, which has been amazing for me.” Her difficulties coincided with the final season of Girls. Since then, she’s been busy writing her second book, producing a comedy series for Jennifer Garner and making a cameo appearance in Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood. livia Molly Rogers may have been crowned the most beautiful woman in Australia, but that doesn’t mean you should judge a book by its cover. The speech pathologist is smashing stigmas when it comes to body shaming g, advocating that mental health issues and eating disorders do not discriminate. The 27-year-old, who won Miss Universe Australia in 2017, made headlines last month when she responded to a cruel Instagram comment. “You’re too fat to be on Instagram,” the troll commented on a photo of the Adelaide-raised stunner posing by a pool in a bikini. “You should take this down it’s embarrassing.” Two days later she responded with another post of herself on a WA beach in the same white bikini. “After a nasty little troll said some awful things about my body, literally hundreds of you messaged me with the kindest, most beautiful words,” she wrote. “I am so grateful for every single one of you. It was the best thing to be reminded that for one nasty human there are SO many amazing humans & I am so thankful that I have that kind of support. F*** the haters!!!” Speaking to WHO, Rogers warns people – especially young girls – not to assume they know everything about someone’s life based on their social media accounts. “So what if I was bigger? It doesn’t make it someone else’s right to comment on my body,” she states. “I like to call it out because it’s important to remind people that it’s not OK.” In her early 20s, while working as a model, she suffered from disordered eating, dropping to 49kg, which was below a healthy

Back when I was modelling full-time and meeting these stunning, tiny models, which at the time I thought was something to strive for, they were some of the most insecure women I’ve ever met.” These days, Rogers is in what is considered a healthy weight range and looks after her physical and mental health. “I eat regularly, eating nutritious foods and not putting too much pressure on myself,” she says. “If I feel like chocolate, I’m going to have it. It’s taken a long time to
get rid of that guilt. Looking at food as something I need for my body and exercising because I want to feel good and not because I need to burn off something.” While a balanced diet and exercise are important, Rogers also stresses the huge impact sleep and regular sessions with a psychologist can have. “Getting enough sleep is massive,” she says. “If I’m tired, my anxiety goes through the roof and I’m so much more affected by things. I also recently started seeing a new psychologist. I have quite a bit of family stuff going on at the moment as well, and that’s tricky, because you’ve got to keeping posting, because it’s my job, and I try to share my life but there is so much that I do still try

They don’t know what’s going on in my life.” Rogers also credits her fiancé, Justin Mckeone, as being a huge support. The Priceline ambassador says her partner – who she will marry in October – “gets so mad” when he sees negative comments on her Instagram. “He’s like, ‘Show me their name’, and I won’t, because I know he’s going to send them a mean message,” she says. “A lot of people say I should call people out and post people’s names, but then they’re going to get trolled and I’m just as bad as them, letting them get bullied. BOOK Arnold has already written a follow-up to The Last Smile in Sunder City. On the acting front, this year he will appear in the Foxtel drama The End.

veryone knows someone who was affected by the bushfire crisis. INXS: Never Tear Us Apart star Luke Arnold says his parents were in Victoria when a fire swept through. “It was terrifying,” Arnold, who turns 36 this week, tells WHO of the blaze, which his parents narrowly avoided. After this season’s deadly bushfires, climate change is a hot topic, and Arnold believes it’s time action was taken. “As we’ve been told, these [climate] changes are coming and Australia will probably be ground zero in feeling those effects,” he says. “You can’t ignore what is happening now. It’s a sad time for all of us.” There is no denying change is in the air. For Australia. For Arnold. After playing rock star Michael Hutchence in the INXS biopic and John Silver in pirate drama Black Sails,
Arnold has taken the plunge as a writer. It’s a plot twist we certainly didn’t see coming. Will Arnold be a new sensation of the literary world? He’s understandably nervous about how his debut novel, The Last Smile in Sunder City, will be received. “It’s a really daunting thing,” he says of releasing the book, the first in a planned series of novels. “When you’re acting, you have so little control over so many elements. With a book, there are no excuses there. I wrote every word.” The idea to write a novel had been bubbling away for years. Back in high school, Arnold would write plays. He was accepted into the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), the prestigious acting school that has trained the likes of Hugh Jackman and Stranger Things’ Dacre Montgomery, but Arnold’s passion for writing never abated. “It was really after finishing Never Tear Us Apart and Black Sails, and feeling quite satisfied and proud of both of those, that I was able to feel free to take some time off to write something of my own,” he explains. Arnold wanted to know whether what had been gestating in his imagination would connect with readers. “At every step, you’re really nervous that maybe someone made some bad choices and everyone is going to hate it and laugh at you,” he admits. “But luckily, I had enough people along the way who gave me some confidence there was something in [the book].” The novel is a detective story set in a fantasy world. Think The Lord of the Rings meets Raymond Chandler. The genesis of the book’s hero, Fetch Phillips, can be traced to Arnold’s high school years, and looking back, he can see why a wild lead

character with plenty of rock’n’roll swagger would appeal to a teenage boy. “In high school, you look at the kinds of characters Humphrey Bogart or Harrison Ford play, and so many awful things happen to them, it makes them cool,” he says. “When you grow up, you realise being cynical, jaded and broken is not really something to aspire to.” Fetch is a shambles of a detective who spends more time getting drunk than actually solving his case, that of a missing vampire. He’s also a human in a world of magic – except that the river, which provides the life-force for these exotic creatures, has run dry. Seeing the recent images of the scarred Australian landscape, it’s hard not to draw comparisons between our world and the one Arnold has created. While a strange land where the “magic has died” was “more of an expression of an internal feeling”, the writer acknowledges that our own world is hurting. Change is needed, he stresses. But change means facing painful truths about ourselves. “To say you need things to change means you must admit you’ve been contributing to things that weren’t right,” he says. “There are loud voices calling for change and for our leaders to be better. We have to be better. We’re still not ready to look into the mirror and admit that we’ve got some problems,” he says. “But unless we do something, we’re all in deep trouble.” ■ By Stephen Downie The Last Smile in Sunder City by Luke Arnold (Hachette Australia, RRP $22.99) is out now

Aunts and uncles “all said it was a fairly normal upbringing”, says Palazzolo. LA County prosecutor Beth Silverman helped fill in some details: By age 16, Little was arrested on suspicion of burglary. He dropped out of high school, and by age 30, his rap sheet included aggravated assault with a gun. June still relives the horror she felt when she learnt of her mother’s death. “I remember sitting there with an investigator when I was 15, and he tells me, ‘Your mother was raped with foreign objects’,” she recalls. She spent years afterward being bounced among 15 foster homes. “There’s no closure,” says June. “It opened up a whole other door of pain. She

He took all that away.” Reginald Thomas can’t forget the “two big thumb prints” he saw pressed into his older sister Melissa’s neck when he saw her body after her 1996 murder. Little’s confession that he met Melissa in a nightclub car park and strangled her in a graveyard the next day included a vividly accurate description of her short hair and single gold tooth – but did not capture her spirit. “She loved to dance and dress up. She was a good caretaker and probably would have been a sweet mother,” says Reginald, 46. His parents didn’t live to see Little answer the questions that had haunted
them for years, but Reginald staged a balloon release after learning the truth a year ago. “I feel that she can finally rest because she knows that her family now knows what happened,” he says. “[Little] is showing remorse by opening up. For me to move forward, I have to forgive him.” As for Pearl, who blames Little for the “big black hole” in her life, she sees no remorse in him. “He’s got nothing in his eyes. Now he wants his glory for his disgustingness,” she says bitterly. “But it’s good that all these people can finally have the answer to what happened to their loved ones. And we got a huge monster off the streets.”

For Salma, I wanted to create a hypnotising and perfectly polished red-carpet look. To conceal any areas that needed a little extra coverage, I applied my Magic Away Concealer, which lasts up to 15 hours! To create Emma’s glistening eye look, I applied my Eyes to Mesmerise in Jean, washed across the eyelid, before using my Luxury Palette in Uptown Girl to add a dreamy lustrous light on the eye. To elongate the appearance of Emma’s eyes and add intensity to the look, I used the Classic Eyeliner Pencil in Audrey to create the perfect feline flick for a gorgeous, cat’s eye effect. You can’t have a beautiful painting without a beautiful canvas, and the secret to creating the ultimate, glowing goddess complexion for the red carpet always starts with the skin. I began by applying my iconic Charlotte’s Magic Cream and Magic Eye Rescue. To create Salma’s shimmering, chocolatey eyes, I used my Instant Eye Palette in Pillow Talk. We chose to use the Date Eye shades, blending them to create a beautiful, fresh-matte eye look. To enhance these tones, I used my Pillow Talk Eyeliner along the top lash line and drawn out into a soft, sultry feline flick. For a finishing touch and to put what I call ‘lights in the eyes’, I added a dreamy veil of the Pop shade from my Bella Sofia Luxury Palette to the centre of Salma’s eyelid. I finished the look with a sultry, warm berry-pink lip using Pillow Talk lip liner and lipstick duo in Medium.
I have worked with Emma Roberts for so many red-carpet moments and she is always a dream. This look, from Vanity Fair’s Oscars party last year, is still one of my favourite red-carpet looks. I created a divine, diffused, modern red lip using a custom mix for a statement colour.

GITAL HABITS to make you happier HOW TO USE TECH TO ALLEVIATE YOUR STRESS

ou don’t need another article telling you that your over-reliance on your phone is killing your sleep, your eyesight and your relationships. So instead, we’re here to talk up the ways that the digital world can help make your life better. “Common sources of anxiety for modern Australian families are a lack of time, desire for connection, and longing for control. Technology can be a powerful tool in helping us overcome these,” says Dr Tim Sharp, aka Dr Happy, a leader in positive psychology.
DO A MINDFUL TECH MAKEOVER We spend six hours and 42 minutes online each day, according to 2019 research by Hootsuite and We Are Social, so it pays to spend that time well. “The technology that we use every day is intentionally designed to be addictive. It’s not our fault, but it is our responsibility,” says Liza Kindred, author of Eff This! Meditation. She suggests: • Turning off all notifications that are not

INVEST IN WHAT MOST BENEFITS YOU Research by Samsung found that 65 per cent of Aussie parents claim technology helps them connect with others. “But how we do this and through which technology can be very important to think about,” says Dr Sharp. Using personal organisational apps such as 24me, Evernote or Trello can be life-changing. They can sync all your bill paying, shopping lists, work notes and social events into one place, so it’s like your brain, but stored in an app. Inexpensive gadgets, like a waterproof iPad case so you can read in the bath, can feel like a luxurious improvement to your day. Or if you need new whiteware, spending a bit extra can make a real improvement to your life. The Samsung Family Hub (from $5999 RRP, samsung. com.au) is a fridge that lets you stream music and movies through it (kitchen parrrtay!), view the contents of your fridge remotely via the inbuilt camera, mirror your phone and shop for groceries through it.
UPGRADE YOUR DOWNTIME Make your scroll time benefit you. “Phones aren’t inherently bad; there is beauty to be found in them too,” says Kindred. Find and download a beautiful game on your phone, use gratitude apps or play with Visited, an app where you can track all the countries you’ve been to in the world and daydream about the ones you still want to see.

ith a long commute to work each day, Ashleigh Connell, 24, was in the habit of eating unhealthy snacks to tide her over until dinner. “I would always get a packet of chips for the train trip. Then, if I got home late or my partner was away, I would order Thai and pick it up on the way home.” Coupled with being an emotional eater, Ashleigh found herself feeling sluggish and bloated. She signed up to take the Keto-Fit challenge when her work wife was doing it, and got her boyfriend on board for extra support.
THE CHALLENGE
ASHLEIGH’S 3 TIPS Do it with a friend You get to really motivate each other. Schedule in exercise Make it a priority in your week. Drink lots of water I’m sure this helped my skin look so good.
Keto is a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet that tricks the body into a fat-burning process called ketosis. Over eight weeks, Ashleigh combined the keto meal plan with regular workouts and Keto-Fit products that are specifically designed for keto dieters and act as a helping hand. At the start, Ashleigh found switching to meal prepping every week a huge change. “I used to forget to eat regularly, which meant I would either overeat or pick up an unhealthy snack when I got hungry. For the new routine I set myself little reminders throughout the day to eat the snacks and meals at regular intervals.” She was also a big fan of the Keto-Fit Coffee: “It was the perfect way to start the day, and had me feeling fuller and more energised than a standard coffee. It was my secret weapon during this challenge.”
THE RESULTS Ashleigh found scheduling the workouts in her diary ensured she stuck to them and she felt excited once she started to see her body change. “Within the first few weeks I had more energy, I was sleeping better and was waking up raring to go. My skin was probably the biggest change. It really cleared up and was glowing.” Feeling her clothes fit better spurred Ashleigh on to stick with the plan, and the change to eating more healthy fats and protein has taught her to be more mindful about what she is putting into her body. “Though now that I’ve finished the challenge, a bowl of p nitely going back on the menu as

For marinade, mix all ingredients, keeping aside a small handful of each of the herbs. Season the lamb well with salt and pepper. Barbecue lamb for 20 minutes on each side. Alternateively, heat oven to 220C and put lamb in a baking dish skin-side up. Cook for 30-40 minutes until a meat thermometer reads 60C in the thickest part (for pink meat). When lamb is cooked, put it on a platter and spoon over marinade. Cover loosely with foil and rest for 20 minutes. Slice and serve with marinade, any juices and remaining chopped herbs.

A SIMPLE SUMMER ROA
The marinade goes on while the lamb is resting and mixes with the juices to make a light, summery sauce.
There is no denying we have been spritzing our way through summer with an orange-hued drink on hand, but now rosé seems to be the new orange ... for spritzing that is! You may have heard of St-Germain – and no I’m not talking about the chic Paris suburb. I’m talking about the all-natural, refined and artisanal French liqueur of the same name. Thanks to its elegant and seductive flavour, it’s a must for any liquor cabinet this summer. Made from hand-picked elderflowers harvested in late spring, each bottle contains up to 1000 fresh, wild blossoms. If you’re looking to elevate your next
brunch, a French Spritz – a refreshing mix of St-Germain, sparkling rosé and soda water – is the perfect addition. St-Germain’s low alcohol content makes it the ideal choice for daytime drinking or for a lighter, elegant aperitif while socialising. With St-Germain’s elderflower flavour being a hot trend, along with its hints of tropical fruits, grapefruit, pear and honeysuckle, the French Spritz is the drink to be seen sipping this summer. Easy to create at home, now’s the perfect time to introduce your guests to this refreshing new drink, that tastes as pretty as it looks. #spritzlife
• 30ml St-Germain • 60ml sparkling rosé • 60ml soda water • 10ml fresh lemon juice • Garnish: lemon twist or slice of lemon Combine all ingredients over ice in a tall glass. Stir gently to combine and garnish with the lemon twist Serves 1

“I was really pleased when they cast Belinda [Giblin] as Martha – she’s terrific to work with,” Meagher says.

“It was a lovely moment,” Meagher says of the wedding dance. “Martha finds the same music from when they were first married.”

HOME AND AWAY STARRING: Ray Meagher, Belinda Giblin Alf Stewart (Meagher) gets a second chance at happiness with his first wife, Martha (Giblin), as the pair marry this week on Home and Away (Thu., Feb. 6 at 7pm; Seven). Meagher tells us about the big day. You must have been to more than your fair share of HAA weddings. Have you lost track of how many? Yes. I definitely have. We’re in our 33rd year and if there’s not a wedding a year there’s something wrong, so at least that many. Maybe two a year. Was it weird to be at the centre of one? It was a bit strange. I’m normally hanging around on the side or giving the bride away and making sure the drinks are cold. Someone else was doing that this time. You become accustomed to being in the background, so occasionally to get a story in the foreground is nice. Do you think Alf would have liked a small affair instead of a big wedding? He would have been happy either way. The bottom line
was he wanted to get back with Martha and she didn’t think he took it seriously enough when he did a casual proposal. So he got down on one knee to show her he meant business – that was the main thing. How it was formalised wasn’t as important as long as she was happy. It wouldn’t be a Summer Bay wedding without drama. What can you reveal? There is a bit of a problem with the ring. No hostage situations or earthquakes? It is Summer Bay. I can’t confirm or deny that. [Laughs] What did you think of the twist to bring Martha back from the presumed dead? She turned out to be a hell of a lot better swimmer than we gave her credit for. [Laughs] It was pretty much set in concrete that Martha had drowned, but her explanation for disappearing was pretty credible. Is it nice to see Alf in love again after so long? It’s been a long time between drinks. It’s terrific. And to have Belinda playing Martha is just fantastic.

The birth of his son Duncan
Roo returning to Summer Bay
With Martha presumed dead, Alf tied the knot with new flame Ailsa (Judy Nunn) in a low-key affair – especially by Summer Bay standards!
The only one of Alf’s four kids born on air, Duncan grew up in the Bay and from the age of about 9 he was played by Brendan McKensy.
Alf’s daughter came back to town looking quite different – Georgie Parker took over from Justine Clarke – but slotted straight back in.

EUROVISION IS SERIOUS BUSINESS
y parents are British, so Eurovision was always a big deal in our house. And when I was older, I hosted Eurovision viewing parties at gay bars around Melbourne, where there would be drinking games – take a shot for a wind machine or a key change. Needless to say, I was incredibly merry. But I’ve always taken Eurovision very seriously, even when it’s ridiculous. Then there are the fans – there are some really committed ones. I met a guy who did a PhD in Eurovision. That’s why, when my co-host, Myf Warhurst, and I are commentating, we don’t want to get things wrong, because we know the fans are going to pull us up on it if we stuff up. And so we study up. We have to interview all the acts each year – we have to know each country, each act, their song. When we go backstage, it’s so chaotic that we have to be ready and they’ll go, “Joel, we need you to go and speak to Latvia right now”. We have to be on our game. Once the Eurovision album comes out, I start listening to it around the clock. I find that any party my boyfriend and I host post-Eurovision, the album goes on. We love it, but everyone else goes, “Not again. We get it, Joel, you host Eurovision”. The whole process is a huge deal, though. Friends of ours have a party every year to watch the Swedish
selection competition, Melodifestivalen. I’ve had a lot of Swedish delicacies at those – some delicious, some not so much. Now, it’s so nice that we have our own competition for people to choose an entry, Eurovision: Australia Decides (airs Sat., Feb. 8 at 8.30pm; SBS). It makes me very nervous putting the power in the hands of the Australian public, because I’m still scarred by RickiLee coming seventh in the second season of Australian Idol. But I think they made the right choice last year with Kate MillerHeidke, and fingers crossed they make the right choice this year. It really is an open playing field this year – I would not be able to tell you who will be chosen. Whoever it is, Eurovision can do huge things for someone’s career. You don’t even have to win. It’s done a lot for Kate and Dami Im, and Eleni Foureira, who came second in 2018, is now the biggest pop star in Europe. I think the love for Eurovision is building in Australia. I’ve been hosting for four years and more people know what it is now. Last year, the excitement was much bigger than previously. And in this day and age when there is so much actual, awful seriousness going on and the world feels like it’s falling apart, Eurovision brings the world together through music. It can be a bit silly and camp, but it’s fun and we’re in serious need of more of that. •

MIKE SHOUHED Ahead of Shahs of Sunset S8 (on hayu from Mon., Feb. 10), the 41-year-old says this is “the most explosive season we’ve had”.
How does it feel to be up to Season 8? I must have been an idiot to ever sign up to something like this. [Laughs] There are so many ups and downs, all anonymity is lost and people can be very unforgiving. It’s been crazy, but it’s been a lot of fun too. What can we expect this season? Some friendships are flourishing and some are falling apart, and people are at each other’s throats. There is all sorts of craziness that I never would have expected. Do you get in there or play peacemaker? Being a nerdy, fat kid growing up, and an immigrant, I used to get picked on, so if I see someone being a bully, I try to calm the situation or mediate. I want to see people get along and it bothers me when they don’t. We were dealing with some really deep-rooted issues and hard allegations.
Quick-fire Q&A Is that MJ and Reza you’re talking about? Among the entire group. That being in the forefront – the allegations between them w were very bad – but there were issues between almost everyone in the group. Doesn’t sound like the group is settling d down, even though some are having kids. The group has grown up and you’re seeing the evolution of our lives. MJ with a baby – I never thought that would happen and she’s such an amazing mum. As for myself, I was lucky enough to find my queen and now I’m open to getting married again. Y Your girlfriend, Paulina, has two children. How do you get along with them? They’re secretly my most favourite people on the planet. When I go to see Paulina, I say hi to them first. I can’t wait to see them. W What can you tell us about the new cast member, Sara? She has a colourful past – she was dating R. Kelly and has some explaining to do, and we d don’t shy away from asking hard questions.

In this tongue-in-cheek horror (in cinemas now), lighthouse keepers Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson (right) deal with mermaids, a sea monster and gulls. Or it may be they’ve gone crazy – the lighthouse version of cabin fever. Shot in black and white, the psychological horror film has won rave reviews for director Robert Eggers and the performances by its two leads.
“You see some people soaring and some hitting rock bottom,” Shouhed says of Season 8.
THE McElhenney has played Mac on It’s Always Sunny a in Philadelphia since 2005.
Quick-fire Q&A
ROB MCELHENNEY The 42-year-old It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star trades swizzle sticks for joysticks as he switches gears to play the visionary boss at a gaming company on new workplace comedy Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet (on Apple TV+ from Fri., Feb. 7).
McElhenney with the Mythic Quest te cast, including Australian Charlot Nicdao (second from left).
How would you describe Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet? On the surface, it’s a show that takes place in a video game company. It’s the top [game] in the world, Mythic Quest. My character is the creative director of the game. He is, from his words, “the visionary” behind it, and then he slowly put together a team that could actually execute his vision. Although the show has somewhat to do with the video game industry, it’s more specifically about the people that work to bring you this game. And this came about when you got a call from Ubisoft, the company behind Assassin’s Creed and Just Dance? They approached me because they liked Sunny and said, “Hey, we’re interested in doing a show about the video game industry.” I didn’t know much about video games, so I wasn’t really that interested. They said, “Why don’t you just come meet some of the people that make these games?” Within an hour of talking to them, I knew that we had something really interesting. Sunny is about these people who are stuck together
because of their abject failure. So we thought, “Well, it might be interesting to do the complete opposite, where people are stuck together at Mythic Quest not because of their failure, but because of their success.” What are some of the topics that you’re excited to explore? I truly believe that in terms of watching a television series, nobody cares about video games in the way that nobody cares about the success or failure of a bar. Ultimately, the audience is there to see the characters and how they’re all relating to one another and how they’re managing through their daily grind. It just so happens that this show takes place in the video game industry, but I really feel like it could be anywhere, especially in a place where the stakes are very high and you have incredibly talented and driven people that are stuck together. Those stories really interested us. Why was this the right time for you to do this? After 14 years, we’ve got Sunny [production] down to about five-anda-half months out of the year. So I realised I have seven or eight months that I’m just sort of free. Sunny is always going to be my baby, but I realised, “Oh wow, I can put Sunny behind me for those eight months and put everything I can into making something new.”
KIDDING S2 STARRING: Jim Carrey, Judy Greer
STREAMING
In the Season 1 finale of this quirky comedy, children’s TV host Jeff Pickles (Carrey) ran into his estranged wife’s (Greer) new boyfriend with his car. Naturally, that action has significant, but also unexpected, consequences, which play out in the first couple of episodes of Season 2, alongside more flashbacks to Jeff’s childhood, imaginary sequences involving his puppets and songs. Due to its more unconventional elements, Kidding continues to be one of the most distinct series around – and the type of show that will divide viewers, as will Carrey’s committed performance as the complicated TV personality. (On Stan from Sun., Feb. 9)

LOCKE & KEY STARRING: Connor Jessup, Emilia Jones Following a devastating tragedy, which is teased out in flashbacks, Nina Locke (Darby Stanchfield) takes her three children to live in the family’s sprawling ancestral home. There, the kids discover Keyhouse contains all manner of secrets – magical keys that unlock special powers and alternate dimensions, and a deceptive demon who works on impressionable young Bode (Jackson Robert Scott) in an attempt to get her hands on the keys. Made to binge – each of the episodes previewed end with a cliffhanger that entices you to stick around for more – Locke & Key also works as family friendly viewing, with older kids sure to get swept up in the Narnia-ness of it all and adults likely to be just as hooked. Jessup, Jones and Scott all do a good job as the Locke children, with the older two characters also navigating the usual pitfalls of starting a new high school – where to sit at lunch, how to impress the cool kids – in between their supernatural adventures. (On Netflix from Fri., Feb. 7)
TIMMY FAILURE: MISTAKES WERE MADE STARRING: Winslow Fegley, Ophelia Lovibond Like Locke & Key, Timmy Failure is also adapted from books, but despite the presence of the lead character’s polar bear offsider, it has more of a real-world bent. Ultra-serious loner Timmy is focused on his detective agency – who killed the class hamster? – at the expense of his schoolwork and to the frustration of his single mother (Lovibond). Fegley, who previously played a younger version of Freddie Highmore’s The Good Doctor character, goes all-in as the single-minded Timmy, whose antics will give kids a giggle. (On Disney+ from Fri., Feb. 7)

Although a three-way collaboration, Ceberano mostly worked independently from The Church’s Kilbey and Sennett on The Dangerous Age, receiving their lyrics and sending back music to go with them. You wouldn’t know that she and Kilbey didn’t even meet during the process, with the trio’s contributions coming together to form a coherent whole which channels the ’70s dream pop of David Bowie in parts. Ceberano’s unmistakable vocals tend to dominate – proof again that there is no genre that doesn’t suit her. (Out Fri., Feb. 7)
Is this really the man behind ’80s megaballad ‘Right Here Waiting’ firing off EDM bangers? Indeed, Marx’s 12th album kicks off with songs like ‘Another One Down’ and ‘Let Go’, which see him veer into dance music territory – and it works better than you might expect. It’s not all four on the floor tunes, however, with ‘All Along’ reminiscent of his power-pop classics of days gone by, and a country-tinged duet with Jana Kramer, ‘Strong Enough’, mixing things up. Clocking in at just 26 minutes, this 13th album by the punk rockers gets the party started then leaves while everyone is still enjoying themselves. And a party it is, with Father of All Motherf--kers, to give the album its full title, conceived as a celebration that takes place while the world is burning – a good time with a dark edge. Musically, Green Day incorporate genres beyond their usual sound, adding glam rock and soul into the frenetic, thrashy mix. (Out Fri., Feb. 7)

THE HOME STRETCH
It’s not as buzzed-about as it once was, but spy series ‘Homeland’ promises a thrilling final season
H
omeland is back after a two-year hiatus to chronicle Carrie Mathison’s toughest assignment yet: a return to Afghanistan as the US attempts to end its longest-running war. The eighth – and final – season opens with the tenacious CIA intelligence officer (Claire Danes) recovering in a treatment centre after suffering a mental breakdown during a seven-month stint in a Russian prison at the end of last season. Mathison is drafted back into action by long-time colleague Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin) – now national security adviser to President Warner (Beau Bridges) – to help close a peace agreement between the Afghan government and the Taliban.
Naturally, the peace treaty doesn’t go according to plan, and Mathison has to try to save the day and deal with colleagues suspicious that she might have betrayed her country while in prison. And given her fragmented memory, she’s not entirely sure herself. “I loved the idea that Carrie is positioned as this suspected traitor – a Brody,” Danes says, referencing Damian Lewis’ morally conflicted veteran from the show’s early seasons. “That’s such a perfect parallel, and fun to play; she’s struggling from PTSD and doesn’t know how to narrate her own story.” Expect a grounded-feeling season as the drama wrestles earnestly with the real-world
complexities of having US forces in the Middle East, while also focusing on wrapping up Saul and Carrie’s roller-coaster relationship. “Homeland was conceived as a story about a protégée and a mentor,” showrunner Alex Gansa says. “The SaulCarrie story has been the one constant through eight seasons, and we really get to bring that story to a close. I hope we did it some justice.” For Danes, the finale marks the end of a decade-long journey, and she says her last day of filming was “a rough one. Things really come to a head with Saul. It was very emotional, and I kind of lost it at the end”. ■ James Hibberd
GOLD DIGGER STARRING: Julia Ormond, Ben Barnes
TV
After her awful, self-involved adult children stand her up at her 60th birthday celebration, recently divorced Julia (Ormond) meets and becomes involved with devastatingly handsome younger man Benjamin (Barnes). The kids, when they discover their mother’s news, are not impressed. But are they right to distrust Benjamin’s motives? Part family drama, part thriller, this British miniseries hooks you in with its soapy premise and retains your interest with strong performances, particularly from Ormond, who is giddy one minute and full of self-doubt the next. The best bit: it’s not clear which way the story will go. (Starts Tue., Feb. 11 at 9pm; Seven)
KYLIE MINOGUE’S SECRET NIGHT
STARRING: Kylie Minogue, Alan Carr The best thing about this celebration of the pop music icon’s 30-plus years in the industry is that we get to see Minogue go off-script. She’s always so poised and professional, but Secret Night allows fans to get a glimpse of the real woman behind the polished public persona. Speaking of fans, the whole shebang is essentially a private concert for some of her most devoted followers, with host Carr organising special visits with super-fans and the odd prank to go with a handful of intimate performances of hits like ‘Can’t Get You Out of My Head’ and ‘All the Lovers’. uring one of Birds of Prey’s fight sequences, Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) identifies a teammate’s vulnerability and provides a critical assist – by lending her a hair tie. This small act of sisterhood is as familiar in an everyday context as it is surprising in the DC Extended Universe. It’s one of the many ways that Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) differs from its superhero movie forebears – it not only stars women, it was made by them, too. “There’s more women in front [of ] and behind the camera than any movie I’d worked on, which is pretty incredible,” says Robbie, who also produced the film. “It was partly a conscious decision, but it also always felt like the organic, right choice to make.” Director Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs) subverts expectations for a superhero flick, in part by creating “a more grounded, tactile quality” to her movie in response “to other films in the genre, where it can get very slick”. The story, too, is less about the strife of good versus evil than it is about processing that most universal of emotions: a breakup. Harley’s split from Joker (played by Jared Leto in the DCEU, where he was last seen in 2016’s Suicide Squad) leaves her heartbroken and wondering who she is without him. “I think all of us, in relationships, sometimes mute certain pieces of ourselves,” says screenwriter Christina Hodson. Post-breakup, “it’s Harley Quinn in her full glory”. After a very public, symbolic severing of her emotional ties to Mr J (hint: it involves a giant explosion), Harley becomes a target for all the Gotham baddies who had left her alone under his protection. Among them is sadistic crime lord Black Mask (Ewan McGregor), who demands that she bring him teenager Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco), a thief who picked the wrong pocket. Meanwhile, nightclub singer Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), disgruntled cop Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) and mysterious vigilante Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) each has their own beef with Black Mask. When their paths cross, they join forces to protect Cassandra. This new girl gang is no “perfect, elite sorority” of powerful heroines, says Yan, who looked to the “motley crew of women” from Bridesmaids as a reference. “They’re still aspirational and cool, [but] the characters were drawn to be flawed women,” she says. Nothing embodies that balance of
relatable and ambitious so well ll as the cos ostu tume mess me from designer Erin Benach, who pointedly created the wardrobe from a female perspective: “In my dreamiest of dreams, what would I want me and a gang of girlfriends to wear to kick butt?” With an emphasis on taste, joy and comfort, Benach mashed up street style, high fashion and – of course – the DC comics in dressing the Birds. “I had never seen that before, that level of understanding of the fashion zeitgeist in a superhero film,” says Yan. Yan cites Harley’s high-waisted denim cut-offs, which took the place of notoriously less-wearable booty shorts, as a piece that “can speak to women right now”. Benach embraced the character’s “punk-rock anarchy sort of vibe” as well as her DIY ethos, like with a voluminous jacket made partially from strips of caution tape. “She might have taken caution tape away from some sort of crime scene, chopped it up herself and made this,” Benach says. With Harley’s expressive wardrobe and idiosyncratic narration, Birds of Prey makes the historically hypersexualised, newly liberated character its clear subject, not object. This “taste of what life could be like when you see it from Harley’s point of view”, as Robbie says, brings not only rainbow confetti but also notsuitable-for-kids mayhem. “She’s very feminine in a very superficial way … At the same time, she’s such a badass,” Yan says. “I liked that tension of it. It was exhilarating to create an unfiltered version of Harley Quinn.” Though lacking a filter, she does have a moral compass, one admittedly as off-kilter as the rest of her world view. In one scene, as she storms a building to capture Cassandra, she uses only non-fatal weapons (e.g., beanbag gun, glitter bombs) to blast everyone in her way. Throughout the film, the most graphic acts of violence are left to the (male) villains. Time will tell if Birds soars at the box office and audiences embrace this brave new Harley – or if it goes the way of another recent all-female action team-up, the November bomb Charlie’s Angels. Fans needn’t worry, though, that heartbreak has made Harley soft – our pigtailed anti-heroine still serves plenty of bone-crunching hits with girlish glee. “I think sometimes we equate femininity with being polite,” Yan observes, “but that’s not the same thing.” You can bet your last hair tie. ■ Mary Sollosi
