ASAKUSA TOURIST CENTER - KENGO KUMA
Kengo Kuma was trying to create a building that projected the cultural history of japan. He advocates the hybridization of cutting edge contemporary design and building technology with notions of heritage and tradition. The Asakusa Culture and Tourist centre’s form echoes a stacked pagoda, an image synonymous with Japan’s history.

Inside, the steel structural elements are clad in timer in an effort to disguise the modern material and hint at a tradition of timber construction. The concepts of the stroll and borrowed view are seen again, this time framing the iconic ancient Buddhist temple Senso-ji shrine which sits across the street.

The face of the building is fabricated with vertical wooden slates a seemingly traditional material. Gaps between which were filled with glass offering the occupant a view of the external surroundings which is key for a centre proposed to offer a better understanding of the immediate culture.

Horizontal slices divide the tower's eight main storeys, creating sloping ceilings in conference rooms and an exhibition space, as well as a tiered floor inside the multi-purpose hall.
The center extends Asakusa’s lively neighborhood vertically and piles up roofs that wrap different activities underneath, creating a “new section” which had not existed in conventional layered architecture.

The dominating roof line is a key feature of this building, and to me this Japanese architecture that receives such world acclaim is one of international style, but with Japanese symbolism that defines it as Japanese architecture.
Its aerodynamic, monumental and suggestive design became an icon of the Japanese capital and a benchmark in the Metabolist Movement, distancing himself from the International Style. When it was completed, the National Gymnasium had the world's largest suspended roof and after almost 50 years its completion it still looks extraordinarily well preserved.
Sitting within one of the largest parks in the metropolitan region of Tokyo, Tange uses the context as a way in which to integrate his building into the landscape.

This is a very explicit example of a designer reinterpreting and reworking an established technique in order to respond to a contemporary brief. it was clear that Kengo Kuma was trying to create a building that projected the cultural history of japan, the faรงade resembling the Japanese pagoda. This building again combines an abstract, contemporary form with a Japanese tradition. Whilst the underlying structural elements are reinforced concrete, the cladding comprises a complex lattice of joints inspired by those used in traditional Japanese timber construction.

As the building relies solely on natural light to fill the interior, artificial light is only required for late night services. Rather than distract from the lightweight ceiling by installing lights and servicing upon it, they are instead hidden behind removable planks of timber on the wall plane, so are displayed only when necessary.

Without columns and using low-cost method of timber construction. In order to achieve this aim, the structure of the boxing club presents a decreasing sequence. It reduces the roof load bearing and creates a void space. The power of strength spreads through the void. The timber composition is made up of both horizontal and vertical direction. The bolder frame is employed for the boxing club which expresses a sense of strength.

The temple situates in the landscape, the access is dominated by the landscape. Its tranqulity and prosperity are main features. The path brings visitors from the present to the past. The exposed external structure of the temple is stunning. A huge timber framework extends down from at least twenty metres up in the hills down to ground level. The large timber structure bears main load. The visitors' route is limited in the same sense. The man-made timber structure is ambitious and powerful.
