Counselopen ,to women

Kappa:

Who'sin charge?

by Kathi Wachenheim Rumors have been spreading around campus that there will be changes again in residency. "There will only be one change and that is to_reopen Counsel Hall to 25 women," Mary Ellen Lilly, director, resident life, said. The reopening of Counsel Hall will solve the problem of having sophomores tripled. There was an overflow of women from the other residences, and opening Counsel Hall to women will alleviate this problem. Questions have been raised as to how the 'lottery will be run. "I will offer rooms to any senior, then any junior, and then any sophomore," Lilly said.

Parents Weekend, an annual Cabrini event held in the fall semester, has been organized and hosted by Kappa Sigma Omega, the Cabrini service organization, according to tradition and the group's constitution. At present, Cabrini's administration feels that there exists a need to appoint an administrative coordinator to oversee Kappa's organization of-Parents Weekend, and facilitate planning and correspondence. Sr. Eileen Currie, president, appointed Sr. Christine Marie Baltas, dean of students, as the administrative representative in charge of Parents Weekend. In her position, Baltas will oversee planning, handle correspondence from the office of student services and represent the college in making contractual agreements. Currie stated in a memo, "It is in my judgement that the Dean of Students is the one who should be responsible to communicate, organize and coordinate all aspects of Parents Weekend." This decision has caused initial resentments and speculation on the part of Kappa members who felt wronged and insulted that charge of Parents Weekend was being 'taken away' from them by the admini tration. Kappa members feel that administration wants to use this event, that is intended for Cabrini students and their families, for public relations purposes and profit. Administrators denied this premise. According to Carter Craigie, Kappa adviser, Parents Weekend did not make a profit this year, but did make a profit in the previous year, 1983, only because holding the dinner and dance on campus was cheaper. In terms of public relations, Baltas feels that having administrative departments overseeing the various aspects of Parents Weekend will give Kappa authority and clout, and assure the college of consistency in producing good work. Baltas said, "We have experts here, we should use them." By having an administrative director, individual Kappa officers will be freed from legal responsibility for the weekend and the actions of those in attendance. Officers had previously signed their names to contracts and legal agreements connected with Parents Weekend. This would have held these individual students liable. By appointing Baltas as an administrative representitive, legal responsibility for the weekend will then be held by the college. On Wednesday, April 24, Kappa President Jennifer Moore, junior, held a meeting in which Kappa members were informed about the plans being made by administration for the upcoming Parents Weekend. more KAPPA on 3

There will be one resident assistant, Lucia Laurito, junior, just as in a housingtype situation. Renovations will occur over the summer, according to Lilly. Specific renovation plans are still under discussion. Some definite changes will be new carpeting and patching of walls in the rooms and hallways. One bathroom will be partially redone, while the other will be completly done over. What will be done with the rooms is still in question. Many students thought it was a good idea to change Counsel into a women's residence. "I was hoping that it would happen. Now Woodcrest won't be as_packed. Tripling is ridiculous," Dayna Ziegner, freshman, said. Not many women are ready to go into Counsel Hall until they see the renovations. ''I won't move in unless they really redo it nicely," Mary Lynn Buddy, freshman, said.

PDE team recommendsrenewal by Lucia L. Laurito The Pennsylvania Department of Education evaluation team for the teacher certification programs has recommended renewed program approval status for five years of the biology, chemistry, communications, early childhood, elementary, English, mathematics, social studies and special education programs. The recommendation was made based on the self-study documents prepared by the education division, interviews with teachers and students from the college and cooperating teachers from nearby schools who participate in the field experience program. Dr. Ruth Sower, chairperson, education division, was very pleased with the recommendation by the team for the maximum approval on all programs. -..It was a thorough, thoughtful report," Sower said, "and a good learning experience for us. The evaluation process is a helpful one." In evaluating the programs, the team used three approaches: observations, recommendations and commendations. Each program was evaluated on an individual basis, and all programs were required to meet a set of general standards. In the first part of the report entitled General Standards, the team observed and commended the college administration and

faculty for their strong commitment to teacher education as evidenced by existing programs and financial support. The committee made the following recommendations based on observation: •that the college expand the facilities of the resource room in terms of space and materials ethat the faculty clarify and publish standards for c!etermination of grades in student teaching •that the education faculty review course syllabi to see where evaluation procedures might be strengthened and specified as a part of course content •that the college examine the extent to which reading and writing methodologies are taught to secondary education students •that provisions be made for field experiences for secondary education students prior to junior year •that faculty follow through with plans to review all field experience manuals The committee made the following commendations based on observation: •to the education faculty for the clarity and comprehensiveness of its student advising procedures •to the college for initiating the Education Advisory Board more PDE on 3
