Scott Markel of The Spirit of '76 Museum in Wellington shows off large murals painted by famed artist Archibald Willard. The pandemic delayed the unveiling of the murals to the public.

WELLINGTON — Scott Markel has been waiting months to unveil the new crown jewel of The Spirit of '76 Museum — an enormous mural by famed painter Archibald Willard. Dubbed the "Fellow Craft" mural, it was made for Masons and depicts the construction of Solomon's Temple. The piece has been painstakingly restored at a cost of $30,000 over the past two years to hang in the museum's first-floor gallery. "This is our biggest and greatest new display," Markel said Friday.

"I've wanted people to see it for so long, and now it's time." The museum has typically welcomed visitors on weekend afternoons from April to October. But

due to the pandemic, it didn't get the chance last year. Now the museum has reopened its doors from 1-3:30 p.m. on Sundays. After July 4, the plan is to resume Saturday operations, too. "We haven't been sitting on our hands during COVID," Markel said, giving a sneak peek at new exhibits and acquisitions. The Spirit of '76 Museum is named for Willard's most famous work, showing a fifer and drummers marching across a battlefield under the Stars and Stripes. So the addition of his "Fellow

OBERLIN — A shield painted with images of Hindu warrior goddesses is among the newly-acquired works visitors can see now that the doors of the Allen Memorial Art Museum have been thrown open to visitors once more. The ceremonial leather piece was made in northern India in the mid-1800s. Its symbols were meant to protect the bearer from harm. Both shield and accompanying sword are among the works Director Andria Derstine and her staff have been eager to show while the museum was largely closed throughout the pandemic. In a normal year, the Allen would get 35,000 to 40,000 visitors. But due to COVID-19, access was restricted to just Oberlin College faculty and students. With Ohio's pandemic orders canceled, the Allen opened to the public on June 2 — the first time in 15 months. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, ALLEN PAGE A4

Biggest COVID aid sum yet is coming for local school districts LAINA YOST, CARISSA WOYTACH and JASON HAWK

Lorain County school districts are slated to receive the largest amount of federal relief dollars so far. Funds are aimed at filling the gaps created by COVID-19, after a yearand-a-half of social and academic turmoil for students and staff. The third wave of relief money via the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief fund will

bring the total amount received by Lorain County schools to about $128 million. Aid has ballooned significantly since the beginning of the pandemic. The first ESSER package spread $8.6 million around the county, the second delivered a combined $34 million and the third is on track to bring another $85.4 million. Lorain Schools, the county's largest public school district, will get by far the biggest share at $58.1 million over the past year. Elyria trails with

$36.8 million. Columbia has gotten the smallest share of ESSER funds, receiving just $1.4 million across all three aid distributions. These are estimated amounts, as the federal Controlling Board can approve requests from the Ohio Department of Education to establish or increase appropriations. Elyria is planning to spend some dollars to convert Crestwood SCHOOL RELIEF PAGE A4
