ELYRIA — Knocking back 22 sugar shots in rapid order will give you the shakes. That's what I discovered last Thursday night at the 18th Annual Zero Proof Mix-Off, where I was asked to help judge drinks. The challenge was a fun one — try a host of non-alcoholic drinks with fun themes at the Spitzer Conference Center at Lorain County Community College. Confession time: Sorry, fruit punches, but I'll openly admit my bias toward all the coffee-based drinks that were served, especially after a long day on the beat. That gave drinks like the "Iced Peppermint Mocha Mock-tail" an edge. It was made by folks at the Mercy-Metro trauma program, which provides high-level care to patients after crashes and other life-threatening emergencies. "Farley's Frappe" was another coffee-based drink, and it had by far the cutest mascot. Farley is the a therapy dog for Project Outreach at the Lorain County Prosecutor's Office. The three-yearold yellow Labrador retriever helps traumatized victims and witnesses relax and keep their composure. There were plenty of non-coffee entries that got big acclaim, too. One was "Christmas at Hogwarts," which used pineapple juice and coconut to take it to another level. Also impressive was "Wiggenweld Potion," a concoction brewed by students from St. Mary Sschool in Elyria. What self-respecting geek wouldn't throw a few points Gryffindor's way? The Ohio State Highway Patrol got a points bump for using mini-martini glasses and little umbrellas to make "Cuddles on the Beach." (I gave them points for the name, too.) And take note: The winner of the Best Overall title was "Recovery is

Mix Off winners

• Best overall: "Recovery is Who-tiful,” mixed by Lorain County Recovery Court • People's Choice: "Pumpkin King's Cider," mixed by Firelands Counseling & Recovery Services • Best Taste: "Metro Park Maple Cider," mixed by Lorain County Metro Parks • Best Student Drink: "Christmas at Hogwarts," mixed by the Lorain County JVS FFA • Best name: "Farley's Frappe," mixed by Lorain County Prosecutor's Office: Project Outreach • Best presentation: "Methyl Ethyl Mistletoe," mixed by Lorain County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security Who-tiful." Created by a team from the Lorain County Recovery Court, the green Grinch-themed drink drew a crowd. Twenty-two groups competed, offering up drinks based around ingredients such as pumpkin, blueberry, peanut butter, peppermint, cider, cranberry and chocolate. The one thing they had in common? No alcohol. The idea is to come up with plenty

of recipes that you can make but won't add to the danger on Lorain County roadways. Alcohol played a role in nearly half of fatal crashes here this year, according to the Safe Communities Coalition, which sponsors the event along with Lorain County Public Health. Last year, nine people were killed in the 372 crashes countywide that were linked to alcohol use.
