LAURA KARETZKY Short Stories September 7 – October 26, 2013

“My recent series “Short Stories” reflects my deep interest in those times in our lives when we feel like outsiders to ourselves—those sequences, when we are experiencing something unanticipated, when we feel as though we are mere observers to our own circumstance.” - Laura Karetzky

Lora Schlesinger Gallery is proud to present Short Stories, a new series of paintings by Laura Karetzky. The show is her fourth solo exhibition at Lora Schlesinger Gallery. Laura Karetzky’s new paintings comprise a visual diary captured in stolen glimpses. The work reflects the artist’s deep interest in depicting those moments in our lives when we feel outside our own being - like a spectator viewing herself from afar. By seizing unexpected, often ambiguous events, Karetzky invites us into scenes filled with possibilities and questions, but never conclusions. Through the use of multiple layers of transparent paint and obsessive mark-making, Karetzky creates a sense of time, allowing the viewer to linger in awkward junctures. The artist creates a rhythm of persistent shapes and patterns that are deliberately at odds with illusionistic space. By bridging the techniques of precise control and loose painterly gestures, the pictures offer rich surfaces that capture fleeting moments. Laura Karetzky’s work has been displayed at Arte Laguna in Venice, Italy and at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC. She is a recipient of the Yaddo Colony Artist Residency fellowship, Rotunda Gallery/BCAT Artist Residency and was named a BRIC (Brooklyn Information and Culture) Artist Honoree. Karetzky has received awards of distinction from the Silvermine Guild, in New Canaan CT, The Eric Fischl award of distinction from the New York Academy of Art, and First Place in the Blanche Ames Regional Art Competition. Her education includes: degrees from Carnegie-Mellon University and the New York Academy of Figurative Art, and training from the School of Visual Arts, The New York Studio School, Rhode Island School of Design, and extensive study in Florence Italy.
