GUEST SPEAKER
DR MAGGIE ADERIN-POCOCK Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock MBE, is a space scientist whose passion is presenting science to a general audience and demonstrating that you ‘don’t need a brain the size of a small planet’ to understand, participate in and enjoy science. Her BBC 2 programme, “Do We Really Need the Moon?” showed just that. The programme earned Maggie the Talkback Thames new talent award at the prestigious Women in Film and TV Awards in December 2011. She went on to present “Do We Really Need Satellites?” and was one of the main scientists on Channel 4’s Brave New World. She is currently presenting Sky at Night on BBC 4, Mini Stargazing for CBeebies and is a panellist on Sky One’s successful science quiz show, ‘Duck Quacks Don’t Echo’. She also makes regular appearances on The One Show, Newsnight and Woman’s Hour and was a guest on Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs. Her book ‘The Sky at Night’s Book of the Moon’ (BBC Books) was published in September 2018 and her children’s book ‘Dr Maggie’s Grand Tour of the Solar System’ (Michael O’Mara) is out now. Maggie studied at Imperial College where she obtained her degree in Physics and her PhD in Mechanical Engineering. Since then she has spent much of her career making novel, bespoke instrumentation ranging from hand-held land mine detectors to an optical subsystem for the James Webb Space Telescope. To share her love of science further, Maggie conducts “Tours of the Universe” and other public engagement activities, showing school children and adults around the world the wonders of space. 2

CHARACTER AWARDS
CHARACTER AWARDS The Character Awards are new for this year; our pupil leaders decided that they wanted to do more to recognise those that display excellent character within our community. Doing this is a far from straightforward task as excellent character can take many forms and is difficult to measure; however, this should not be a deterrent in recognising those who display the characteristics and behaviour we aspire all our young people to have. The decision was taken to base the Character Awards on the pupils’ Community Beliefs, which are: I will be courageous in doing what is right.
I will be aware and inclusive of others.
I will respect myself, others and the environment.
I will encourage others to be who they are.
Nominations were opened up to the whole school community at the start of term and in a three week period we received 432 nominations, some pupils receiving multiple nominations. The global community is facing so many significant challenges at present; however, a glance down the explanations as to why a pupil has been nominated is, I am sure you will agree, an excellent tonic. This is an initiative that has been driven forward by Mia Wagenstein, one of our outgoing Heads of College, and underlines our belief in the ability of young people to action change. A panel of staff met prior to half term to review the shortlist and chose the following pupils for recognition in displaying excellent character:

CHARACTER AWARDS
Junior House WINNER Emma Boateng – 2nd Form Emma is a valued member of the Junior House boarding community; she quietly upholds her values, ensuring she looks out for her friends and those she is concerned for, communicating well with staff when there is an issue. Her awareness and respect of others mean she consistently strives to ensure all pupils are included, no matter what their friendship group. She is an excellent role model for those in the 1st Form and as she moves through the School we are sure this will continue. Her kind and happy mindset underpins all she does and she is a very deserved winner.
HIGHLY COMMENDED Jamie Travis – 2nd Form It is telling that Jamie achieved nine nominations from pupils and staff. Someone who nearly always has a smile on his face, Jamie is someone who holds the core values of LWC dear to him and embodies them on a daily basis. If someone’s behaviour does not meet our community’s expectations he challenges them in a sympathetic manner and encourages them to be a better version of themselves. His positivity is infectious and is commended for improving the lives of others.
Middle Years (3rd-5th Form) WINNER Oliver Buckley – 5th Form - Summerfield House Oliver, who received 11 nominations in total, is awarded the Middle Years Character Award for the journey he has been on since joining LWC. It has not always been an smooth road to where he finds himself today; there have been bumps along the way but he has consistently shown a willingness to develop and learn, improving his character as a result. He has stood up for others when discriminatory remarks have been made, been inclusive to others and made sure that he uses his positivity as a force for good with all those he comes into contact with.
16
CHARACTER AWARDS
HIGHLY COMMENDED Freddie Powell – 4th Form - School House Freddie is highly commended for his inclusive and positive approach. He is aware of all those around him and when there are people on the periphery of a group he goes to great lengths to make sure they are included. It is said that good people bring out the best in others and this is certainly the case with Freddie. What underlines his value is that fact that he has only been with us for such a short time, having only joined the community in September.
6th Form WINNER Finty Trussler – Upper 6th - Haygate House Finty embodies the concept of random acts of kindness, showing awareness to all those around her and using small acts to give people a lift in their day-to-day lives. This positivity has created ripples which in turn influence others to follow suit. This year, more than any other in recent history, has required the influence of people like Finty to help us to battle on and to keep smiling. Moreover, she is a true friend; being a shoulder to cry on; someone to pick you up when you are feel down; and someone who goes out of their way to include all those in Haygate and beyond. Her role modelling of positive behaviours has left a legacy to those that follow and we look forward to plotting her progress in future years.
HIGHLY COMMENDED Scotia Ebot – Lower 6th - Haygate House Scotia’s journey, has been nothing short of staggering; joining in 1st Form as a shy and retiring child she has blossomed into a confident young person who has the courage to stand up for what is right and the tenacity to continue to champion her and the community’s beliefs. Her work in recent months as the lead of the school’s Cultural Committee is testament to all of this, championing equality and diversity. The great news for LWC is that we still have her for another year!

DEVIZES TO WESTMINSTER CANOE RACE 2021 The 125 mile long Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race has been held annually over the Easter weekend since 1948. It is a severe test of skill, physical and mental stamina and involves many months of dedication, training and preparation and is known as the canoeist’s Everest. The race sees the Juniors paddle over 4 days, camping each night. What is more impressive is the commitment shown by the Junior paddlers. On average the senior race will see 40%-50% of competitors fail to reach the finish line, compared to the 95% success for the younger paddlers. LWC has been taking part in the event since 1998. Training starts for the LWC students in September. From the first time in a boat to being ready to take on the challenge is a greater journey than the race itself. Last year’s race was cancelled four weeks before the event due to the pandemic and this year’s has now followed suit. The crews are now training towards a new challenge, starting at Lechlade, paddling the length of the navigable River Thames to Teddington (total distance of 125 miles, with 44 locks, run over 4 days). SCHOOL HYMN He who would valiant be ‘gainst all disaster, Let him in constancy Follow the Master. There’s no discouragement shall make him once relent His first avowed intent To be a pilgrim.
Who so beset him round with dismal stories, do but themselves confound – his strength the more is. No foes shall stay his might, though he with giants fight: He will make good his right To be a pilgrim.
Since, Lord thou dost defend us with thy Spirit, We know we at the end shall life inherit. Then fancies flee away! I’ll fear not what men say, I’ll labour night and day To be a pilgrim.
Pearcy Dearmer after John Bunyan

LORD WANDSWORTH FOUNDATION
The Lord Wandsworth Foundation offers awards to young people, like me, who have lost the support of one or more parents through death, divorce or separation. At home, many children might be put into difficult positions where they have to take care of others. LWC provides the opportunity for students to feel safe and cared for in a supportive environment, where they can put themselves first and focus on their futures. I was honoured to be appointed as Head of Gosden House and as Foundation Prefect this year. My focus was to emphasise the idea of community and family, both in house and across the school. I have been at LWC for 7 years and have made lifelong friendships and connections. None of it would not have been possible without the tremendous support of the Foundation. Alisha Thomas
We are grateful to all our donors: parents, Sternians and various charitable organisations. It has been wonderful to see increasing numbers of our community supporting the Foundation this year by making one off donations, signing up as a regular donor via our Give the Gift of an LWC Education campaign or becoming a member of our 1912 Society for those choosing to leave a gift in their will. Thank you - your support means the world to our Foundationers and their families. We need to build on this support and continue to increase philanthropic income to ensure our tradition of Foundationers is sustainable for future generations. If you agree that enriching the lives of children during such a formative and vulnerable period in their life is a good thing, please contact the Development Office to discuss how you can help. Together we can make a real difference. For more information, please contact: Samantha Corfield, Development Director 01256 860243 or development@lordwandsworth.org 25
