In addition to their chosen subjects, all 6th Formers attend an Enrichment Lecture Programme covering a wide range of topics from current affairs, political issues to GAP Year opportunities. GCSE RETAKES The retaking of GCSEs in English and Mathematics can be arranged and this is done on an individual basis during one or two lessons per week.

LWC 6th Form has a fantastic range of opportunities and activities on offer which make your time here so much more rewarding and fulfilling.

We are all encouraged to lead activities and get involved in as much as possible which has really helped me grow in confidence. My personal highlights have been completing the Gold DofE, the Devizes to Westminster 125 mile canoe challenge and a volunteering trip to Ghana.

Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

ARTiculation

WHAT IS THE EXTENDED PROJECT? The EPQ comprises a single piece of original work, (either a 5,000 word essay or a product) of the student’s choosing, that shows evidence of planning, preparation and research, reflecting 90 hours of independent study and 30 hours of taught research skills. It was developed with the intention of strengthening the programmes of study by testing a wider range of skills and to provide a ‘tool kit’ of expertise that better prepares students for higher education and employment. Oxbridge candidates are expected to take the EPQ.

WHAT SKILLS WILL YOU LEARN? •H ow to identify, design, plan and complete an individual project. •T o apply organisational skills and strategies. •T o research and select information from a range of sources and analyse data. •T o demonstrate an understanding of connections and complexities of a topic.

WILL IT HELP YOUR UNIVERSITY APPLICATION? The EPQ constitutes half an A Level at A2 standard (70 UCAS points maximum) and is graded A*-E. Universities greatly value the EPQ, as it is evidence of higher level academic skills. It can be a differentiator when being offered a university place, particularly for competitive courses.

Propelling Art A level students towards a broader skill base, ARTiculation is a nationally acclaimed public speaking competition set up by The Roche Court Trust. ARTiculation is designed to stimulate students’ interest and understanding of art while developing individual thinking, observation, research and presentation skills. The Trust invites 6th Form students to give a ten minute speech based on a work of art, artefact or image of their choice. The competition was recently recognised in the national media when it was made the subject of the BBC’s Culture Show. Fully supporting this inclusive, exciting way to learn about art and gain public speaking skills, LWC’s art school hosted a preliminary round of ARTiculation, involving 11 local participating schools. Staff, parents, friends and fellow students who attended this event were thoroughly inspired by the imparted imagery and ideas. LWC Artists are proud to have twice achieved prizes at regional level and the winners of the regional round go forward to the National finals held at Clare College, Cambridge.

•H ow to use technology to solve problems. •T o think critically, creatively and flexibly. •H ow to evaluate your own learning and performance. •A range of communication skills to present your conclusions.

CAMBRIDGE PRE-U

AQA

Art A Level offers opportunities for creative exploration, development and innovation in one or more of a wide range of techniques and media.

This is a two-year course with three written papers at the end of the Upper 6th year.

Assessment is three units - Unit 1 portfolio work, Unit 2 an illustrated essay and Unit 3 Project set by exam board. All these reflect and develop the research and analytical skills that are expected in higher education and encourages students to become more articulate about the contexts that are shaping their own visual ideas. Students are encouraged to engage, enjoy and work hard in their investigations in a lively but serious manner very much like they would at University or in the workplace.

#FUTURE Art and Design Foundation at Oxford Brookes followed by Graphic Design BA Hons

Paper 1 – topics 1-4 (Lower 6th work) Paper 2 – topics 5-8 (Upper 6th work) Paper 3 – topics 1-8 (including a 25 mark essay) There is no practical assessment, but students are required to have completed 12 set practicals to demonstrate core scientific skills. This new examination also includes some maths/statistics and essay writing skills, each worth 10% of the total marks available. The topics covered over the two year course include: biological molecules, cells, DNA and protein synthesis, the immune system, digestion and absorption, mass transport in animals and plants, muscles and movement, genes, alleles and inheritance, gene cloning, evolution, ecology and energy transfer.

LWC is a great community and offers a fantastic atmosphere to learn in. In the 6th Form you have much more one-to-one support from your teachers.

Your tutor offers a huge amount of help and advice in personal statement writing and University applications as does the Head of Careers. Leadership is greatly promoted, providing you with opportunities to lead activities and departments. I think the combination of own study time and lessons is great and allows you to take more responsibility for your work, a key skill needed for study at University.

A Level Business Studies is a linear A Level with three two hour exam papers at the end of the second year.

Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London

The course is designed to allow students to access business in a variety of contexts (e.g. large/small, UK focused/global, service/ manufacturer). The thread throughout the course is based upon strategic decision with risk being considered at all functional levels. The course is delivered through topical case study material which encourages debate. Guest speakers are invited to classes and visits to companies are also arranged. This enables students to be exposed to the subject and to make informed and analytical decisions.

Class sizes are small and the one-to-one sessions in the 6th Form have really strengthened my learning. The freedom to use all the fantastic facilities has enabled me to carry out extensive experiments and gain greater insight into my chosen subjects.

Chemistry AQA Chemistry is the science of matter. Anything that can be touched, tasted, smelt, seen or felt is made of chemicals. Chemists are the people who transform the everyday materials around us into amazing things. Some chemists work on cures for cancer while others discover new materials to make our homes warmer in the winter, or new textiles to be used in the latest fashions. The knowledge gained through the study of chemistry opens many career pathways.

www.lordwandsworth.org/6th-form

We follow the new reformed syllabus which will test students’ understanding of experimentation more so than the previous syllabus. All A Level students at LWC are given the opportunity during their course to design, conduct and evaluate the results from a wide range of experiments. Practical work brings science to life, helping students make sense of the universe around them through investigation and uncover the important links between their personal observations and scientific ideas.

A great honour for me was being made Deputy Head of House, Maths Prefect, and International Pupil Supporter, all of which have enhanced my communication skills and ability to collaborate.

Courses A-Z Classical Civilisation AQA The OCR Classical Civilisation A Level is divided into four units. Two are studied in the Lower 6th year, currently the Invention of the Barbarian and Homer’s Odyssey. Then two more are studied in the Upper 6th year, and all four are tested by the A Level examinations at the end of the U6th. All four units make up the final A Level grade. The course contains a broad range of literary texts which are read and analysed. The students are taught to discuss the literature not as isolated texts, but in their contemporary context. They learn about both the Greek and Roman Worlds, their history, culture, customs, religious and political life. There is a great deal to be learnt about our own 21st Century world from the drama, epic poetry and politics of the ancient Greeks and Romans that we explore in the A Level.

Computing OCR On the course, you will learn to code in Java, a powerful and adaptable language. You will also learn about databases, program design and various techniques to build effective programs quickly. On the theory side of the course, we look at design principles, security, Computing Maths and networking. There is also a coursework

www.lordwandsworth.org/6th-form

section where you will build your coursework for a person or organisation; you will be responsible for designing and building a piece of software to their requirements. To study A Level Computing you will need either a B or above, in GCSE Computing, or if your current school does not offer GCSE Computing, an interest in computing and knowledge of an object orientated programming language (Python, Java, C++) will suffice.

Design and Technology Edexcel The A Level Edexcel Product Design Resistant Materials course comprises of using creativity and imagination when applying interactive design processes to develop and modify designs, and to design and make prototypes that solve real world problems, considering their own and others’ needs, wants, aspirations and values. Pupils will sit a 2 1/2 hour exam, which tests the pupil’s knowledge of industrial and commercial practices. In the second year of the course, students are given the opportunity to apply the skills they have acquired and developed to design and make a product of their choice that has a client focus. Pupils will also produce a substantial design, make and evaluate project, which consists of a portfolio and a prototype. There are four parts to the assessment covering the identification of a design problem, developing the design, making the prototype and evaluating both the design and the final product.

This subject combines well with Maths, Art, and Physics or as a creative subject to enrich any combination. Students must have achieved at least a C grade at GCSE in Resistant Materials to embark on the A Level course.

Drama and Theatre Studies Edexcel The Edexcel Theatre Studies A Level is designed to engage students through encouraging creativity, focusing on practical work which reflects 21st century theatre practice and forming opinions through the honing of analytical and evaluative skills. This course will support progression to the further study of Drama and Theatre Studies and a wide range of other subjects. The course has a straightforward structure with three components, one that focuses on devising (40%), another that focuses on performing or designing skills (20%) and finally practical exploration of texts to interpret them for performance (40%). This third component is a written exam. Students will develop a multitude of essential skills, including collaboration, communication and an understanding of how to amend and refine written and practical work in order to make a smooth transition to their next level of study or employment.

www.lordwandsworth.org/6th-form

27

28

Courses A-Z EAL (English as an Additional Language) AQA All pupils for whom English is an additional language will spend time with the EAL Department during their time in the 6th Form, unless they arrive with a very high level of academic English. EAL lessons can either be one-to-one or in small groups for conversation and pronunciation focused work. IELTS is taught in order to satisfy UK University English language entry requirements. The test can be taken worldwide and as many times as is required. TOEFL is also offered for those pupils wishing to study at University in America. If a pupil is intending to study at University in their home country, EAL lessons can still be arranged in order to support the curriculum and improve language skills.

Economics AQA Economics is a social science concerned with the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services, and as such studies the organisation of society around us. Students will learn the basics of economic analysis, covering both micro and macro economics and are assessed by three exams at the end of the second year, one on each area and a third paper on unseen issues and topics within the subject. The exams include multiple choice questions, as well as both short written questions and several long essays. Successful students will develop strong numerical and data skills and the ability to communicate their ideas effectively in written form.

English Literature CIE The CIE (Cambridge International Examinations) Pre-U specification is a fully linear course and leads to examinations and coursework in the summer of the Upper 6th year. The qualification is equivalent to an A Level in English Literature. A range of prose, poetry and drama is studied such as Jane Eyre, The Great Gatsby, Revolutionary Road, Othello, A Streetcar Named Desire, Waiting for Godot, the poetry of W.H. Auden, Judith Wright and Edward Thomas - as well as a wide variety of

www.lordwandsworth.org/6th-form

extracts across the literary canon. Students must have achieved at least a B or 6 grade in IGCSE English Language and/or IGCSE English Literature to embark on the course. Naturally, you should also enjoy reading. Being open-minded and imaginative can be an advantage when analysing literature. Generally, though, if you enjoy talking about ideas and exchanging views with others then you are likely to enjoy Pre-U English.

Film Studies

Geography

WJEC

CIE

This AS/A Level specification is designed to deepen students’ understanding, of film, not only as the major art form of the last century, but as an agent of influence, documentation and political activism.

Geography is recommended by the Russell Group universities as a facilitating subject and is a popular course here at the College.

Students will engage with a wide range of different kinds of films, developing observation, critical analysis and personal reflection skills, as well as honing their creativity and practical abilities in audiovisual and written form. The specification explores the relationship between the film and the individual by examining how films create a variety of meanings and produce both intellectual and emotional responses. The interaction between film and spectator is emphasised as integral to this study. Consideration of a range of critical approaches appropriate to this level helps students appreciate the unique role of moving imagery within our world. A range of historic and thematic topics relating to British cinema are studied, as well as critical analysis of a number of powerful and challenging foreign language films.

www.lordwandsworth.org/6th-form

The Department follows the Cambridge International Examination syllabus. The A Level is a 2-year linear course and is split between Human and Physical Geography. Lower 6th study the human elements of population, migration and settlement dynamics and the physical elements of hydrology and fluvial Geomorphology, atmosphere and weather, and rocks and weathering. Upper 6th study the human options of global interdependence and economic transition and physical options of tropical and coastal environments. All of the above units build on the content delivered in the Cambridge International Examination IGCSE taught in Key Stage 4. There is a residential field study that supports the curriculum and incurs a cost of around ÂŁ190. There are four written exams based on the content listed above. There is no coursework or skills paper.

29

Courses A-Z History AQA The AQA History A Level, is broken into two modules and a 3,500 word piece of coursework. The first module on British History covers the rise of the Tudors from the victory of Henry VII at the Battle of Bosworth to the death of Elizabeth I. The second module on World History evaluates the origins, the conflict and the aftermath of the American Civil War. The coursework piece, completed alongside the modules in the Upper 6th year, is on a topic of Historical interest of the pupils’ choice but must range across a period of c.100 years. To study History A Level, a C/B-A* GCSE in the subject would be useful, but it is not essential to have studied History GCSE if you show enthusiasm for the subject matter.

Latin OCR Latin A Level provides students with the opportunity to study texts covering a range of disciplines such as history, philosophy, literature, religion and politics. Students read a broad range of literature, both prose and verse, in the original language, which is designed to give them a deeper understanding of the life and culture of the ancient world. We are currently reading one of Cicero’s legal cases, Virgil’s Aeneid, Seneca’s Letters and Ovid’s stories of the

www.lordwandsworth.org/6th-form

Heroes. The OCR exam course develops the language skills which have been learnt at GCSE enabling students to become more skilled and confident at dealing with the variety of styles of language that they are likely to meet. The course also encourages students to read widely, both in Latin and in English, so that they are in a position to discuss the texts in their literary and political context.

Mathematics Edexcel We follow the Edexcel Mathematics programme which consists of two Pure Mathematics modules and one Applied Mathematics module (which covers Mechanics and Statistics).

must choose this A Level but it is increasingly relevant for courses in Engineering, Physics, Economics or Statistics. Further Mathematics is a fast, challenging course and students are expected to have an A* at IGCSE before embarking on the course.

Modern Foreign Languages French, German, Spanish AQA French, German and Spanish follow the AQA syllabus at A Level which allows students to develop a greater understanding of the history, culture and society of the relevant country.

Further Mathematics may be selected as an additional A Level and is studied alongside A Level Mathematics. It is studied as an accelerated programme.

In the Lower 6th, students study a range of topics such as the changing nature of the family, the ‘cyber-society’, the place of voluntary work, artistic culture, contemporary music and cinema. In the Upper 6th, students develop further the ideas and knowledge gained in their first year and areas such as literature, film and social issues are studied in more depth. The students also develop a theme of their choice as an independent study piece, which allows for research in areas of particular interest. A brief outline such as this, however, cannot convey the richness and diversity of experience offered in all three languages. Each language follows the same course outline but the cultural aspects are of course very different, as well as the linguistic knowledge and skills gained.

An additional four modules are required for Further Mathematics. Students who are aiming to study Mathematics at top Universities

In order to study languages at A Level a minimum requirement of an A at GCSE is advisable.

An A grade or above in GCSE or IGCSE Mathematics is an expected minimum. In addition, an aptitude for algebraic topics is an important prerequisite for success. A Level Mathematics is considered a facilitating subject and consequently is a requirement for many University courses.

Courses A-Z Music Edexcel The Edexcel Music A Level is designed to inspire the students in forming meaningful relationships with music through the development of musical knowledge, understanding and skills. Students will be encouraged to engage critically and creatively with a wide range of music and musical contexts, develop an understanding of music in different cultures, and reflect on how music is used in the expression of personal and collective identities. Pupils take three units; Performing, Composing, and Appraising. Students must perform for a minimum of 8 minutes and submit one composition and two technical studies. There is one 2hr exam at the end of the course which assesses listening and appraising skills through set areas of study with works ranging from Bach to Stravinsky, Courtney Pine to The Beatles, John Cage to Kate Bush, and Batman Begins to Psycho. The teaching of musical elements, contexts and

musical language is supported by a diverse curriculum, spanning centuries. Students are encouraged to apply listening and appraising skills to unfamiliar music, resulting in an in-depth understanding and appreciation of a variety of different genres. The course is relevant and interesting, ensuring students learn to perform, compose and appreciate different types of music, developing critical and creative thinking, and cultural, aesthetic and emotional awareness. Requirements: A minimum of Grade 5 in main instrument/voice, plus Grade 5 Theory.

Physical Education (PE) OCR This is a new specification aimed at developing a theoretical knowledge and understanding of factors that underpin physical activity and sport and use of this knowledge to improve performance. It includes understanding of physiological and psychological states that affect performance, sociocultural factors that influence involvement in sport. A new addition to the course is a much larger section on Biomechanics and the understanding of force, fluid mechanics, linear, angular and projectile motion. Knowledge of the benefits of physical activity combined with an understanding of the contribution made to health and fitness of the individual are also examined. Assessment is two 75 minute papers worth 35% of the overall course and 30% practical non-exam assessment which is moderated at LWC.

Physics OCR A Physics is the exploration of the Universe: all that is in it and how it works! Looking at the beauty and complexity of the world around us, that might appear pretty difficult. But in fact it is elegantly simple. Those who study Physics will learn how to find similarly elegant solutions to apparently complex problems; skills much valued in the real world. At A Level you will study in greater depth topics from GCSE: mechanics, electricity and waves, and also some new topics such as quantum and nuclear physics, cosmology and the principles of applications such as imaging techniques used in medicine. At its core, Physics involves solving problems; collecting evidence, making models, seeking relationships and testing hypotheses. Ohm’s law is the easy bit; it is these underlying principles that make Physics the most useful A level subject to study. We follow the OCR Spec A.

Politics Edexcel Politics A Level consists of three externally examined papers: UK Politics UK Government Comparative Politics There will be an opportunity to focus study either on the government and politics of the USA or to consider broad political themes from a global perspective.

Students will be expected to engage in issues affecting the modern world by reading contemporary political journalism, engaging with online political blogs and taking advantage of top class broadcasting from the BBC, CNN and other international media. The ability to write clearly, to think critically and to understand complex ideas will also be a requirement. Politics A Level provides an excellent introduction to this fascinating subject and will prepare students to take the subject further at University. Above all, it provides an opportunity to discuss, debate and engage with some of the biggest questions facing humankind today.

Psychology Edexcel (9PS0) The Edexcel Psychology course is a two year linear science qualification, which explores the foundations of psychology through consideration of four approaches (social, cognitive, biological and learning) in Year 1. A scientific approach is taken to study the brain and behaviour, based on theories, research methods and evidence. Clinical psychology and Criminal psychology are studied in the second year, whilst continuing to further students’ knowledge and understanding of research methods and issues and debates (for example, naturenurture; ethics of socially sensitive research; reductionism). Mathematical skills are required to analyse data and conduct statistical tests throughout the course.
