Supporter Update Welcome to our new Donor Newsletter We appreciate the support we receive from all our donors and supporters and look forward to updating you more regularly in this way.

Your generosity enables the Foundation to remain at the heart of LWC and continue to play a vital role in the lives of many pupils at the College, and their families.

Trusts and Charities It is not just individuals of course. We have relationships with many trusts and charities who help to fund specific pupils or the Foundation as a whole. Some are long-standing partnerships and others are newly begun.

We also work with numerous charitable organisations who either refer pupils to us or help support our pupils pastorally both in school and during the holidays.

We look forward to continuing to work together for the good of our young people over the coming years.

Fundrasing Income Update

Sternians and Parents We are truly grateful to all the dedicated individuals who have continued to support us for some time.

Historically, this has predominantly come from our Sternians but it has been wonderful to watch this generosity spread across the whole LWC community with increasing numbers of parents (of current and former pupils) as well as staff and governors pledging their support.

We have been delighted to welcome many new donors this year, who have;

• joined our 1912 Society by kindly pledging to leave a legacy in their Will. All members have received their special society pin badge. We had a wonderful day out at the Royal Albert Hall last year and are looking forward to seeing our members at our event at Chawton House on 16th July.

• Donated their time and expertise by volunteering at the Careers Fair and 5th Form Mock Interviews.

Thank You!

We would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to everyone who has donated recently – either personally or via a trust or charity.

Your generosity is invaluable and means the world to our Foundation pupils and their families, as well as all the LWC staff and governors.

Foundationer Story Alvin & Melvin, Upper 6th Form Foundationers We are twins, born in the UK to Ghanaian parents. We grew up in London with our mother and our older sister.

With our mother working long and often antisocial hours and our father no longer playing a role in our lives, we had to learn to be independent at a very young age – getting ourselves ready for school in the mornings whilst mum was at work.

We thought we were average children, but our school and our church thought we were bright so encouraged us to apply for schools. LWC looked like it would be a new and exciting opportunity that would equip us for life. We were both offered Foundation Awards, and joined as 1st Formers in 2012.

Alvin: Shortly after starting, we lost several members of our family, leading me to develop a loud and boisterous character – getting myself into a fair amount of trouble. Thankfully, no one wrote me off, instead the pastoral team at LWC gathered around to support me at this difficult time. Mr Lumsden has mentored me, pushing me to be the best version of myself and my excellent tutor, Mr Turney, has helped me to develop myself academically and unlock my full potential. Week after week, they continued to support me despite sometimes letting them down. Schools that would do this are few and far between and for this, I am eternally grateful to LWC and the Foundation.

As I look back over my 7 years here, I can see just how much I have changed - the man that I have become. I have been honoured to serve as Head of Sutton House and Head of the Outreach and Charity Committee this year. I have also enjoyed representing LWC at the highest level in all sports including district athletics competitions and being a rugby captain in my U6th.

Melvin: The beginning of my journey at LWC was not easy - life in the countryside and a boarding school is very different to that of the fast-paced London life. Nevertheless, I was supported by not only my friends and the staff at LWC but also by the pastoral care at the school and the sense of community. I have been given a wealth of opportunities that have helped to make me a well-rounded man. I have performed in several plays, completed gold DofE, and achieved county cross-country as well as regional athletics.

LWC is incredibly proud of Alvin and Melvin. Not only for everything they have achieved but also for making the most of all the opportunities on offer. They have given so much back to the College during the last seven years and are true role models. Both have also developed a strong academic record since joining LWC. GCSE Results

College News Instead of Foundation Day this year, we asked our Foundationers to make the film mentioned overleaf, but we look forward to welcoming you next year.

There has been much excitement on campus this term. Pupils and staff have been enjoying delicious food together in our beautiful new dining space, Julyans, since January and it was officially opened by Sternian, Patrick Drake, co-founder and Head Chef of Hello Fresh at the end of the term.

This means we can now move on to other projects, large and small, both in the classroom and on the sports fields. All offering additional opportunities for you to get involved.

LWC has taught me that it is very important to help others who need support and to that end, I have volunteered at Pax Hill elderly home and Treloar’s school for disabled children, been a peer mentor, and helped with the Long Sutton community. I also went on a 2-week volunteering trip to my home country, Ghana, which was an unforgettable experience.

I am grateful for the things I have been able to do at LWC enabling me to hone my skills academically as well as in sport, acting and socially, which will all continue to aid me in later life.
