INTRODUCTION / 简介
NALATI FOREST PARK RESORT TREES are sacred at Nalati, and it is these trees that have inspired the project. From the air and from the road, the landscape of XinYuan county is dotted with row after row of elongated white birch trees in all stages of growth. Upon arrival at the Nalati National Forest Park, spectacular evergreens form long colonnades that extend the full length of the site. It is against this magnificent backdrop that a network of unique architectural promenades are proposed that define the Nalati Forest Park Resort. From these paths the visitor can experience the trees, the landscape, the animals and the plants of Nalati in surprising and unique ways. Here architecture will serve to exhibit the landscape, where a forgotten tree is suddenly captured to become part of a secret garden, where the morning sun creates a glowing wall against which a tree’s shadow is cast, or where the distant mountaintop is framed as a living panorama. It is this experience of living in harmony and as one with the landscape, and in each season, that serves as the primary concept for the resort.

These promenades are sometimes defined by buildings or by a simple line, at times they create ribbons of threedimensional space and at others mark a contour line. These circuits seemingly gesture and overlap as they explore, at different speeds, the best qualities of the landscape, and from which the four seasons of Nalati can be enjoyed. 当长廊塑造三维空间带，此时的长廊被定义为建筑物，在长廊为地形轮廓线的标记时时，则演变成一个简单的线条。 这些线路看似交错重叠，仿佛是在以不同的速度寻找那拉提四季分别最美的景色。
Promenade #1: The Principal Promenade The spaces of the principal programs are collected into a continuous building that inscribes a sequence through the landscape and is in itself a microcosm of the entire site. Here the resort is like a museum where the circulation path takes us through a series of rooms, but instead of Rembrandts or Degas’, the ‘paintings’ exhibited here are of the trees, the setting sun, the bird that flies across the sky, the spring flower or the water that trickles in the stream. This path is carefully constructed to bend and fold as it focuses on the most beautiful moments of Nalati, and while the building itself does not move, the‘paintings’ that it frames continuously transform with the passing of time and each season. And while the building can be experienced as a continuous path, it can also be experienced as a series of individual spaces: the spa with its bathing pools and massage rooms, the restaurant of both larger and smaller dining rooms, terraces and pavilions, the library of special books and publications, the art gallery for the display of paintings and sculpture, the suite of karaoke rooms, and the entertainment space for evening music or small theater productions. Each of these spaces has its own private access and exterior space and one can choose to experience them individually or havea complete experience as one movesfrom one space to the other. Thus the principal promenade can be experienced in many different ways and is never the same. The trees of Nalati have inspired this principal promenade as a simple structure that seems to be constructed of the trunks harvested from local trees. As a delicate mirage it appears as continuous row of trees – sometimes a very thick row of older trees and at other times a very thin veil of young saplings.Nestled within this continuous row of ‘trees’ are a series of spaces that hold the various communal programs.

Promenade #2: The Villa Promenades A series of more discreet, more private, ribbon-like promenades are inscribed throughout the resort, paths that are sometimes defined by low walls that create small pockets or gardens, paths to which are attached a cluster of villas. Each villa becomes a three dimensional extension of these paths, which appear to leave the ground and transform into a system of ‘structural ribbons’ that define both the exterior and interior spaces of the villa. These three-dimensional ribbons reach out and grab a special tree, or stretch out toward a specific view, or become a wooden bookshelf, or carry a floating pool. And while the basic construction system for the villas are related, the varieties of villas are seemingly endless. Each villa is developed specifically for a precise site condition and program: next to the mountain or alongside the river, on a hill or in a valley, in a meadow or in the trees, a villa for one person or a family of generations.

There are approximately twenty-five species of endangered birds at Nalati, and so that we remember their names and pay attention to their plight, each villa is named after one of these birds. 在那拉提有二十五种濒危鸟类。每个度假别墅都以其中的一种鸟类而命名，使客人记住它们的名字并了解它们的处境。
Promenade #3: The Leisure Promenades The beauty of this magical landscape is further experienced through a series of promenades that link the most unique characteristics of Nalati. These leisure promenades can be experienced both by an individual and in smaller groups, and traverse the landscape in surprising ways, introducing the visitor to the resort’s special programs. These paths follow the contours of the site and are at times simply paved surfaces, while at others a covered walk. In some locations they are carved into the ground, but are sometimes raised and float amongst the treetops. And it is along these paths that unique follies are discovered: a steaming bath sunken into the ground, a fire pit for summer (and winter!) barbeques, a quiet ‘tree house’ from which to view the birds, a swinging hammock for an afternoon nap, a delicate tea room perched atopthe mountain, a small private café reaching out over the Ili River.

Promenade #4: The Agile Promenades The terrain at Nalati ranges from flat open meadows to steep wooded slopes and the agile promenade takes full advantage of these variations in topography. As it winds its way through the trees, the valley, by the river and up onto the southern slopes it provides access to an entire range of activities for all ages and desires. This fresh air circuit can be enjoyed in the spring, summer and fall for a leisurely Sunday afternoon stroll or an early morning run, and even more rigorously by mountain bicycle, while in the winter snowshoes might be the path’s best friend. It connects a series of exercise ‘stations’ that might include archery targets, t’ai chi spaces, exterior table tennis or Pīngpāng qiú, stretching bars, a yoga platform, even a circle of ice for a winter skate.
