Dr. Karl James Lorenzen

I am a Mesoamerican Archaeologist trained at the University of California, earning my B.S., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in Anthropological Archaeology with a specialization in Mesoamerican Archaeology. I am also an alum of the Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collections, serving as a pre-doctoral Fellow from 1999 - 2000 in Pre-Columbian Studies. From 1993 through 2001, I conducted four field seasons of archaeological field research at the ancient Maya site of El Naranjal in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. The site of El Naranjal is principally an Early Classic (ca. 300 A.D.) site that was abandoned for some 1,000 years and subsequently reoccupied during the Late Postclassic (ca. 1500 A.D.), just prior to Spanish contact. Since my Doctorate in 2003, I have been an invited Fulbright Scholar In Guatemala City, Guatemala, and have worked as an Academic Administrator at UCLA since 2005.
