Our Idiot Brother Rating: R Rank: Ned (Paul Rudd) is an organic farmer who, with an idealistic attitude, seeks out the best in others and has a habit of speaking with the utmost honesty. After his lack of common sense lands him in jail, his girlfriend kicks him out of their home and he is forced to seek out the help of his family. Ned’s three sisters, Liz (Emily Mortimer), Miranda (Elizabeth Banks), and Natalie (Zooey Deschanel), take turns offering their homes as a temporary harbor. Though Ned’s unusual tendencies and idiosyncrasies disrupt his family’s day-to-day lives and create several difficult situations, his family learns that Ned’s optimism may not be the most idiotic thing after all. In ―Our Idiot Brother‖ Paul Rudd brings a new kind of comedy to the screen. The movie is certainly laugh-out-loud funny, but for reasons other than immature comments and adults acting like children. ―Our Idiot Brother‖ plays on comical aspects of human nature and family interaction. 50/50 Rating: R Rank: Adam Lerner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a 25-year-old working at a radio station, leads an average life. He has a girlfriend, Rachel (Bryce Dallas Howard), and a best friend, Kyle (Seth Rogan), who each add an interesting dynamic to his life. However, Adam’s life is turned upside-down when he decides to visit a doctor and is diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. At first, Adam is shocked that this could happen to him, as he always taken the safe route—never getting his driving license to avoid accidents and waiting to cross the street until it is designated. Adam comes to terms with his situation, presents the news to his family, and begins to undergo treatment. Along the way, Adam’s relationship with his girlfriend hits the rocks and he meets Katie (Anna Kendrick), a doctoral student who helps him cope with his treatment process. The process of fighting for his life shows Adam what is truly important and allows him to appreciate what he previously took for granted. 50/50 is a film falling into the category of a ―Dramedy.‖ Watching this film will bring a tear to your eye and a chuckle to your heart. Joseph Gordon Levitt does a fantastic job depicting a young cancer patient, battling both the illness and his inability to come to terms with what is happening. Seth Rogan adds his comedic touch to the film, creating relief in otherwise tense moments.

500 Days of Summer Rating: PG-13 Rating: An unlikely adventure, which we are constantly reminded is ―not a love story,‖ 500 Days of Summer follows the path of Tom Hansen (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) as he embarks on a, you guessed it, 500-day journey of meeting, falling in love with, and having his heart crushed by Summer Finn (Zooey Deschanel), an intriguing girl who suddenly enters his life. Gordon-Levitt and Deschanel’s chemistry is undeniable and their performances solidify their images as darlings of the Indie film industry. As the film progresses, Tom slowly builds up the pedestal on which he places Summer, first longing after her, and then obsessing over their time together. While their relationship is deteriorating around them, he exists in his own fantasy world, completely looking past obvious cues of what is to come. A blindsided Tom’s heart is eventually crushed to pieces by Summer, in a turn that would seem a heartbreaking end to this non-love story, but the subtle hilarity that ensues throughout the movie leaves the viewer feeling content. Tom’s unconventional support group, a foul-mouthed, straight-talking tweenage sister, and two friends whose clueless advice serves only to frustrate and confuse him, provide comic relief to the film (not to mention Summer’s blunt, tell-it-like-it-is demeanor). The film is entertaining. Unlike most rom-coms currently being churned out by Hollywood, with plots that are decipherable after viewing the trailer, 500 Days of Summer leaves you guessing. Tom and Summer’s story is unique, and even more original is the way it is told. The film draws the viewer in and, something rarely found in film these days, leaves you genuinely wanting more. LevittGordon and Deschanel are true stars in this film, giving life to words and script in their own unique way.

This alternative rock band uses heartfelt melodies and thoughtfully composed lyrics to relate to listeners, and does so successfully at that. The band strikes a chord with an unusual sound quality that perks up the ears. Singles like ―Use Somebody‖ and ―Sex on Fire‖ are fan favorites that showcase lead singer Caleb’s unusual voice. Artist: Mumford & Sons Album: Sigh No More Rating: On a technical level, Mumford & Sons’ debut album Sigh No More, may have not lived up to critics ratings, containing repetitive melodies and track structures, but for the listener, the album delivers ear-pleasing tracks that are both dramatic and fun. The lyrics in this freshman album pack a delightful punch, delivering a passion that isn’t often felt. And while the lyrics may not seem to make complete sense (―Little Lion Man?‖), they intrigue the listener, and surely leave one longing for more. Songs like ―Liar‖ and ―Awake My Soul‖ deliver powerful buildups of melody and beat that feel dramatic and fulfilling. Whether looking for inspiration or comfort in song, or perhaps just some fun for your ears, Mumford and Sons ―Sigh No More‖ is catchy and exciting—we recommend a listen.

Restaurant: Cara Mia Location: 645 9th Avenue New York City, New York 10036 Food: Italian Price: $$ Rating:
Cara Mia creates a fantastically homey environment with delectable dishes and an accommodating wait staff. Upon being seated the waiter asks if you are attending a show that evening – the restaurant is conveniently located just a few blocks away from Broadway—and they are quite accommodating to your schedule. A tremendous list of specials is announced and you are given just the right amount of time to review the menu. After placing your order, a plate of bruschetta, a piece for each member of your party, as well as a variety of freshly baked breads, with olive oil for dipping, is presented to your table. Appetizers and entrées are served in a timely manner – a homemade pasta dish is recommended for your entrée. If you manage to save room, do not pass up the opportunity to try Cara Mia’s homemade desserts. The tiramisu, a classic Italian dessert, is light and not overly saturated with liqueur. And, of course, you can never go wrong with a trio of gelatos to end your meal. While taking in the experience at Cara Mia be prepared to sit very close to your fellow diners—while this may sound like a negative aspect, it is not uncomfortable; instead, it feels as though you are sitting around the dinner table with family during the holidays. Cara Mia is a classic Italian restaurant from the food to the décor—ciao down!

Book: One Hundred Years of Solitude Author: Gabriel Garcia Marquez Rating: A telling story of the Buendia Family, a clan that spans multiple generations. Set in the fictional village of Macondo, One Hundred Years of Solitude is a magical realism novel that demonstrates the effects of time and consequences of failure to acknowledge your mistakes. While the story deals with love and adventure, beginning with Jose Arcadio and Ursula Buendia’s relationship that later blossoms into the Buendia family, it is primarily a chronicle of characters’ lives. Marquez bends time the novel, including characters that live extraordinarily long lives and are capable of cheating death. Outrageous happenings take place in Macondo, but the characters are strangely unaffected. While the novel incorporates different themes, it emphasizes the effect of the past on the characters, and their inability to learn from it. One Hundred Years of Solitude is beautifully written and is the perfect wintertime read.

Water Gel Beads Scissors (kitchen strength) Wide Vase Ribbon (complementary color to flowers) Flowers (five kinds)
Line Flowers – These are flowers with a tall, narrow appearance. They are used to determine the arrangement’s height and width. Possible choices for line flowers include gladioli, delphiniums, freesias.
Focal Flowers – These flowers are true to their name; they are the largest flowers in the arrangement and serve as the focal point. Examples of focal flowers include roses, lilies, and hydrangeas.
17
Textured Flowers – These are flowers that are used to add visual interest. They are smaller than the focal flowers and generally have several flowers per stem. For textured flowers you could use carnations.
Filler Flowers – These flowers are used to fill in the gaps in the arrangement and add fullness. Filler flowers typically have small blossoms and grow in clusters. Flowers used for this purpose include baby’s breath, feverfew, and pompon.
Greens – These stems are also used to fill in blank space in your arrangement, but greens mostly serve the purpose of creating a background for the arrangement.
18
Prepare your vase by filling it with the water gems. Use your chosen line flowers to determine the height and width of your arrangement. Place the stem used to determine the height in the middle of the arrangement. Next, use two more stems to determine the width and place them on either side of the arrangement. The stems used to create the width should be shorter than the stem used to create the height. This will create a triangle shape.
19
Next, position your selected focal flowers around the center of the arrangement, as well as slightly lower than the center. This will give weight to your arrangement and provide balance.
20
The third step is to use your textured flowers to surround the focal flowers. This adds dimension to your arrangement.
21
Now, use the filler flowers to fill the empty spaces in the arrangement. The filler flowers can be placed anywhere; place them around the front, sides, and middle.
The last step in assembling your arrangement is to place the greens around the back side. This creates an attractive backdrop for the arrangement.
22
For the finishing touch, wrap a strand of ribbon around the vase and tie it in a bow. And, voila! You now have a beautiful, homemade, flower arrangement. Display it on your kitchen table, in your living room, or anywhere in your home to add a warm touch!

When to Go: Located in Williamsburg, Virginia, on America’s east coast, the town experiences all four seasons. Your trip becomes unique depending on when you go, ranging from less expensive travel to a popular tourist season, but the overall experiences enjoyed will remain the same. Winter: Temperatures may be chilly and shorter daylight hours will mean less time to spend in the historic buildings, but a trip to the colonial town during this time can be unexpectedly delightful. Cold weather will inspire you to snuggle up by the fire and wind down. Locals are enjoying the holiday season and enjoying down time before the temperature rises for spring. Travel and lodging costs will also be down during this time. Warm up with hearty colonial foods and spend quality time relaxing with the family and enjoying company in an old world setting. Spring: A perfect time to take a journey to the past, as the weather becomes warmer and the historic sites offer fresh experiences for a new season. While prices of travel and lodging begin to creep up, the atmosphere is buzzing and inviting. Seasonal treats are available as warmer weather approaches too give your stay an unforgettable touch. Summer: Warm weather creates an inviting environment with days filled with adventure and discovery from morning to night. Strolling through the colonial town can be an enjoyable event all its own. Don’t miss out on the events offered through the summer months, such as extended tours and visits. While travel costs may peak during this season, the experience offered is priceless. Fall: As travel costs begin to dip during this time, visit to enjoy a colonial atmosphere as the town prepares for the holiday season. From Halloween haunts in the beginning of the season to delicious Thanksgiving and holiday treats, visiting in fall can provide the most unique and unusual experience of all.
Additional Ideas: Don’t miss Busch Gardens Europe, just a few minutes drive from Colonial Williamsburg. Spend a day traveling from country to country in one of America’s most beautiful theme parks. The park offers six quality, high thrill rollercoasters ranging from a racing ride that drops at a 90° drop to a suspended car coaster that swings around turns with a whip. Food is delicious and abundant, inspired by different locations and cultures all over the world. Not the type for thrills? Busch Gardens offers shows, entertainment, activities and even an animal sanctuary and aviary. Boat rides along the man-made river running through the park and lush gardens make this destination one of the most beautiful in the country. Be sure to stop by during some down time from the colonial world and enjoy some unforgettable, worldly entertainment.

As technology expands in today’s society, people have taken to the Internet to share their ideas with whomever is willing to take the time to read them. Blogs have become one of the most likely places for people to share about their individual topics of interest. Bloggers, those who write the posts for blogs, use the forum of the Internet to dispense their style secrets, recipes, home furnishing advice, and more. These websites allow viewers to see inside the life of another person; how they do things, what they enjoy, and their advice are only some of the topics covered by bloggers on their sites. As blogs become more popular in today’s computer driven world, more and more sites are created, and more topics are covered. In the past few years, blogs have become a fantastic resource when searching for inspiration. Keeping in line with The Nest, the following blogs, Cupcakes and Cashmere and Apartment 34, are lifestyle blogs highlighting a range of topics with great advice and inspiration.
TN: What do you do for a living? Emily: I work full-time on my blog, which includes several partnerships, design collaborations and web consulting. Right now I’m in the process of writing my first book, which comes out in August 2012.
Cupcakes and Cashmere, maintained by Emily Schuman, is a blog covering everything from fashion, to home décor, to recipes. The twentysomething, Los Angeles, California resident, has an inspiring design aesthetic and shares her views with her followers in a creative, fun, and personal manner. Her daily posts offer fun tidbits of information and advice.
TN: What advice do you have for someone aspiring to work in the fashion industry? Emily: How should I go about pursuing a career in fashion? Get as much experience as you can; whether it involves working in retail, landing an internship at a magazine or even writing (and maintaining) your own blog. Work hard, research things incessantly, be persistent, and find out answers on your own. Knowing that you want to work in fashion is a start, but try to narrow your focus so that you have a better idea of which jobs to pursue and why you’re the perfect candidate. The more knowledge and experience you bring to the table, the more likely you are to get hired.
TN: How did you get your start? Emily: I knew that I wanted to work in fashion my senior year in college and interviewed at Condé Nast several times throughout the year. I eventually landed a job at Teen Vogue and Domino magazines the day after I graduated and have been hooked ever since! I started my blog as a way to document the things I loved and over time was able to turn it into my career. TN: Where did you go to college and what did you study? Emily: I went to Scripps College and studied sociology and media studies.

Apartment 34, a blog maintained by Erin Hiemstra from Seattle, Washington, is a sophisticated site that serves as a treasure chest filled with pieces of inspiration. Created four years ago, in the midst of searching for her own sources of inspiration, Apartment 34 has grown to encompass more issue than just home décor.
TN: What is your job? Erin: I am a corporate PR professional by day, and I share my love for style, fashion, and design by night. TN: What inspired you to create a blog? Erin: I began blogging almost by accident. After buying my first home I headed online to find interior design inspiration and voila – Apartment 34 was born! If you go back to some of my earliest posts you’ll see my pepto-pink living room… Eeek. Then, all of a sudden, I met my future husband and moved out of my home, but the blog just morphed to keep up with my current passions. TN: How has Apartment 34 evolved over the years? Erin: Life likes to keep you guessing. So when everything I planned changed, so did Apartment 34, growing into the treasure trove of daily style inspiration it is today. TN: What is the image of your blog all about? Erin: Apartment 34 celebrates curating a styled life featuring all things fabulous in fashion, decor, weddings, interiors, food, photography and whatever else happens to capture my eye.
42
TN: What is the focus of your blog? Erin: On Apartment 34 I hope to provide a daily dose of the details you need to cultivate a styled life – from fashion to décor to styling. TN: How would you describe your personal style? Erin: I would describe my style as classic with an urban twist. Think Katherine Hepburn with a dash of Olivia Palermo. As much as I love to blog about the latest trends I don’t tend to wear them myself. I love clean silhouettes – the spring Jil Sander collection is my current favorite example, and I tend to be influenced by menswear; I love crisp white shirts, blazers, a great trouser, and I’ve never met a stripe I didn’t like. You just need to throw in one strong feminine statement to keep things interesting – be it a bold necklace, skyhigh heels or a structured tote. The key is not to overdo it. TN: How have you expanded your blog and your career? Erin: After receiving regular requests from readers for style and design advice I began offering creative styling services for businesses, wedding planning and personal style. From Emily Schuman of Cupcakes and Cashmere: images of her newly redesigned LA home.

Makes 18 doughnuts + 18 doughnut holes (suggested yield for a 3-inch cutter; my larger one yielded fewer) 1 cup apple cider 3 1/2 cups flour, plus additional for the work surface 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick or 2 ounces) butter, at room temperature
1 cup granulated sugar 2 large eggs 1/2 cup buttermilk Vegetable oil or shortening (see my explanation in the post) for frying Toppings (optional): Glaze (1 cup confectioners’ sugar + 2 tablespoons apple cider) Cinnamon sugar (1 cup granulated sugar + 1 1/2 tablespoons cinnamon) Make the doughnuts: In a saucepan over medium or medium-low heat, gently reduce the apple cider to about 1/4 cup, 20 to 30 minutes. Set aside to cool. Meanwhile, in a bowl, combine the flour, baking powder and soda, cinnamon, salt and nutmeg. Set aside. Using an electric mixer on medium speed (with the paddle attachment, if using a standing mixer) beat the butter and granulated sugar until the mixture is smooth. Add the eggs, one at a time, and continue to beat until the eggs are completely incorporated. Use a spatula to scrape down the sides of the bowl occasionally. Reduce the speed to low and gradually add the reduced apple cider and the buttermilk, mixing just until combined. Add the flour mixture and continue to mix just until the dough comes together. Line two baking sheets with parchment or wax paper and sprinkle them generously with flour. Turn the dough onto one of the sheets and sprinkle the top with flour. Flatten the dough with your hands until it is about 1/2 inch thick. Use more flour if the dough is still wet. Transfer the dough to the freezer until it is slightly hardened, about 20 minutes. Pull the dough out of the freezer. Using a 3-inch or 3 1/2-inch doughnut cutter—or a 3 1/2-inch round cutter for the outer shape and a 1-inch round cutter for the hole from a set like this, as I did—cut out doughnut shapes. Place the cut doughnuts and doughnut holes onto the second sheet pan.
Refrigerate the doughnuts for 20 to 30 minutes. (You may re-roll the scraps of dough, refrigerate them briefly and cut additional doughnuts from the dough.) Add enough oil or shortening to a deep-sided pan to measure a depth of about 3 inches. Attach a candy thermometer to the side of the pan and heat over medium heat until the oil reaches 350F. Have ready a plate lined with several thicknesses of paper towels. Make your toppings (if using): While the cut doughnut shapes are in the refrigerator, make the glaze by whisking together the confectioners’ sugar and the cider until the mixture is smooth; make the cinnamon sugar by mixing the two together. Set aside. Fry and top the doughnuts: Carefully add a few doughnuts to the oil, being careful not to crowd the pan, and fry until golden brown, about 60 seconds. Turn the doughnuts over and fry until the other side is golden, 30 to 60 seconds. Drain on paper towels for a minute after the doughnuts are fried. Dip the top of the warm doughnuts into the glaze or cinnamon sugar mixture (if using) and serve immediately.
