Welcome
Welcome to the 2022 Showcase Concert evening presented by Loreto Mandeville Hall Toorak.
This evening, you will hear performances from our exceptionally talented musicians. Students from Years 7-12 will present music of the highest calibre, skilfully supported by our fine piano and harpsichord accompanists, Mandeville String Orchestra and Loreto Symphony Orchestra. We are grateful to the performers’ instrumental teachers, accompanists, and orchestral conductors for the role they play in facilitating such excellence and passion in our students.
Students have selected repertoire which explores a range of stylistic horizons, genres, and atmospheres that exemplify the strength and breadth of their talent. With skills honed over multiple hours of practice and a musical maturity far beyond their years, these performers will thrive in their return to the stage in 2022.
We are continually grateful that our students have the opportunity to perform in such world-class venues. We thank Ms Angela O’Dwyer and the Leadership Team at Loreto Toorak, as well as the staff at the Melbourne Recital Centre for their facilitation of an evening of fine music. Our warmest thanks to each of you for your ongoing support of the students and staff; it is with great pride and pleasure that we present to you these incredible students and invite you to enjoy the highly anticipated Showcase Concert for 2022.

Siena Fodera Year 11 Voice
Music has always been a part of Siena’s life. She is greatly influenced by the late Donny Hathaway - as an individual who grew up surrounded by church and gospel music, she resonates with this shared sense of religious faith, and music as a form of spirituality.
Loreto Toorak has provided Siena with many musical opportunities, and the Year 6 musical production of Beauty and the Beast stands out as the most inclusive performance she has experienced. At 13 years of age, Siena participated in Channel 9’s The Voice, and she has performed with ‘Cirque du soleil’ at the Crown Palladium raising money for the Royal Children’s Hospital. Most recently, Siena organised and performed at an event to raise money and promote a GoFundMe page, to help save the ‘Lentil as Anything’ establishment.
Melissa Gu Year 7 Piano
In 2021, Melissa passed her Certificate of Performance on Piano with Distinction and Grade 5 Theory of Music with Honours. She recently placed 1st in the Under 14 Piano competition at the Ringwood Eisteddfod and 3rd place - Under 18 at the Musical Society of Victoria awards. Beginning piano lessons at the age of four and half and cello aged eight, Melissa likes to express her feelings through music and share the same love for music with others.
Melissa’s favourite composer is Bach and she enjoys playing many of his amazing compositions on both piano and cello. Melissa will never forget performing at her first Annual Music Concert - she was excited to be playing in an orchestra in Hamer Hall for the first time; it was an amazing experience for her.
Emma Guthrie Year 11 Violin
Since coming to Loreto Toorak, music has played a significant role in Emma’s life.
During her first Annual Music Concert, the Year 2 students danced to Stage Band’s performance and since that time, Emma has met many incredible young musicians. Emma’s music journey - from not being able to read a single note in Muirhead Strings, to performing in tonight’s Showcase Concert – fills her with pride.
Her favourite violinist is Anne-Sophie Mutter, whom she saw perform live in 2018; it was at this moment she became enamoured by Mutter’s ability to make the strings cry with both joy and agony, and Emma aspires to convey the same depth of emotion in her music.
Isabella Jao, AMusA Year 11 Clarinet
Isabella enjoys every minute of performing music. She learnt classical music growing up and her favourite composer is Chopin. Since learning jazz music however, she has begun to appreciate big band artists such as Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, and Artie Shaw.
Isabella’s favourite Loreto Toorak music memory was performing in her first Oak Parlour Recital in Year 5. With no concept of what the environment was like, when she walked up to play and saw Dr Stevens and Ms O’Driscoll in the first row, she realised that she ought to have practised more!
For Isabella, her proudest musical achievement is passing her AMusA, after playing piano for 12 years.
Yoshie Koh, AMusA Year 10 Piano
Yoshie began piano lessons aged five, and violin lessons three years later. Since commencing Year 4 at Loreto Toorak, she has embraced the Music programs and is grateful for the countless opportunities it provides; currently she participates in Mandeville Strings, Loreto Symphony Orchestra and Madeleine String Quartet.
In 2021, Yoshie completed her AMusA on both Piano and Violin, and earlier this year, competed in the aged 15-17 Steinway Youth Piano Competition Australia, placing 3rd overall.
Elizabeth Negline Year 12 Cello
Elizabeth’s musical journey began in 2013 with the Year 3 Strings Program at Loreto Toorak; later she focused on the cello in Muirhead Strings, Rathfarnham choirs and Rathfarnham Quartet. In 2017, Elizabeth was fortunate to attend the School’s European Music Tour.
Elizabeth has attended MYO’s Summer and Ensemble Programs and State Music Camps and is grateful to share her love of music through performing in tonight’s Showcase Concert. Elizabeth is thankful for the mentorship provided by Ms Daniel, Mr Woinarski, the Music Department and Leadership Team.
She was a PAF Choral Captain for Ward in 2021, and this year, achieved the Certificate of Performance in Cello.
Amelia Pastore Year 12 Voice
Amelia started lessons at the age of 6 and was soon involved in regular group and solo performances.
In her early teens, Amelia began experimenting with more contemporary styles, which led to writing original songs and learning guitar and piano to selfaccompany. A few key memories from this time include her performances of original compositions at The Jazzlab as part of the Loreto Unplugged program. For Amelia, being a musician is a means of selfexpression that enables her to use her creative ability to tell stories.
In the future, she hopes to take her music endeavours to the next level with bigger performances and recording and distributing her original songs.
Cara Sullivan Year 12 Voice
Cara has been singing for as long as she can remember, but it was after commencing singing lessons at Loreto Toorak in 2015 that she discovered her love for it.
She has explored her contemporary voice through opportunities provided in the Loreto Unplugged Program, sung jazz in the highly anticipated Jazzlab performances, and, since 2018, has been focused on classical voice and opera due to her being part of the Victorian Opera’s Youth Choral Ensemble.
Singing alongside her peers in the School choirs and Vocal Ensemble are memories Cara will always cherish as she continues to pursue music in the years to come.
Angela Sun Year 7 Cello
Angela sat her AMEB Grade 8 Cello Examination having learnt for less than five years and recently achieved a Distinction for the ARSM diploma with the ABRSM on Piano.
Angela wishes to spread the feeling of joy by performing and sharing music with other people. One of her favourite composers is Debussy, as his music sounds quite magical and a bit like water to her, which she finds comforting and relaxing. Angela will always cherish the memory of her first Annual Music Concert in 2015 as a Prep student; she distinctly remembers standing on the stage at Hamer Hall and looking out into the sea of people and feeling excited to perform. Angela is extremely grateful for the opportunity to perform in the Melbourne Recital Centre as a soloist for Showcase.
Caroline Vellas
Year 10 Viola
For Caroline, music has become a means for creative expression. She has thoroughly enjoyed playing in various ensembles and the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of musical styles through the Year 10 classroom elective.
Caroline particularly loves works created and popularised during the Romantic period, due to the large orchestras, lyrical melodies and complex harmonies, specifically those written by Tchaikovsky.
One of her many music highlights was her first viola lesson. It was exciting to immerse herself into a different, yet still familiar, environment and appreciate the richness of the viola. Caroline is exceptionally proud to have completed her AMEB Grade 8 examination on viola and has been working on pieces for her AMusA diploma.
Georgia Vellas
Year 10 Violin
Music was not something Georgia was ‘born into’, but rather was signed up for lessons by her mother in Preparatory. This decision is one which she will forever be thankful for given the way music has shaped her perception of the world.
Music is a way for Georgia to connect with herself, her sister, and peers, as well as the audience. Throughout school, Georgia has strived to push the bounds of her musical capacity and test the ways musicians can manipulate written music. For Georgia, completing her AMEB Grade 8 examination on violin recognised the effort and determination involved in learning an instrument.
Music will forever be part of Georgia’s life and she looks forward to a future where she can continue to foster her ability.
Emma Wang, LMusA Year 11 Piano
Music has played a significant role in Emma’s life, and she has always loved sharing artistic interpretations of different pieces with friends and family.
Loreto Toorak has provided her with countless music memories, but a favourite would be Celebration of the Piano in 2018, where she played an arrangement of Holst’s “Jupiter” for five pianos with four other students, all of whom have now graduated.
Though Emma has enjoyed all musical performance opportunities at School, her best memories are time spent with fellow musicians and teachers, whether they are informal chats about music in Mandeville Hall, or at rehearsal for ensembles such as Loreto Symphony Orchestra, Mandeville Strings and Vocal Ensemble.
Eleanor Yip Year 9 Violin
As a child, Eleanor first took an interest in music when she saw a boy playing the violin at a gathering. She begged her parents to let her have lessons and they didn’t give in until two years later. She also started learning the piano because she thought it looked cool when people played it. Since commencing at Loreto Toorak in Year 5, Eleanor has had many memorable moments, her favourite being her first Annual Music Concert; she had never been in such a big performance venue before.
Eleanor is extremely grateful for that opportunity and for the opportunity to perform at Showcase tonight.
Giorgie Zafiropoulos Year 10 Flute
Music has strengthened Giorgie’s connections with friends, such as feeling loved when the Flute Ensemble played ‘Happy Birthday’ to her last year. She is proud to have learnt to play the piccolo within a year and worked hard on the training exercises with her teacher, Mrs Hardy, to develop her skills and tone. Her favourite composer is Chopin; she admires his elegant pieces which illustrate deeper meanings.
Giorgie will always remember playing outside for the first rehearsal for Loreto Symphony Orchestra in 2022 - the weather was perfect until 3:15pm when there was a huge gust of wind and all the sheets went flying in the air, scattering all across St Michael’s Green.
