the resources to:
• address the care and needs of our Loretto Sisters; • maintain, renovate and improve our “Old Kentucky Home,” and other facilities we occupy; • support our varied ministries and community projects; • upgrade our technology to keep us “in touch” with our families, friends, community activities and all our sisters and brothers with whom we share our “Earth Home”? You are the inspiration of our prayers of gratitude to God by your generous “gifting of Loretto.” We rely on both God’s Providence and your generosity to enable us to be “faithful disciples” in today’s world. My greatest blessing during 2016 was the privilege of accompanying Sisters Pearl McGivney and Vicki Schwartz to Rome and be present for the audience with Pope Francis! When Pope Francis extended his special blessing to the audience, he invited us "to hold all those whom we love and cherish in our hearts, those living and deceased," as he blessed the silent throng of faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square. You were embraced in my heart for this blessing. This annual publication is our way of publicly acknowledging and thanking YOU for your generous response to our congregational and ministerial needs. Loretto's Wider Mission
Loretto Co-member Rox Monterastelli, also a member of the Loretto Latin America/Caribbean Committee, joined with the Task Force of the Americas delegation in summer 2016 to study hunger and urban farming in Venezuela. Their studies took them to vegetable gardens in unexpected urban places, including neighborhood corners and high-rise rooftops. Women are directing the new Venezuelan Urban Agricultural Ministry by starting seed-saver collectives and organizing cooperatives to process and distribute food equitably.

St. Joseph Church, the spiritual heart of Loretto Academy, El Paso, Texas, underwent major renovations in 2016, according to Buffy Boesen SL, Loretto Academy President. In its 88 years, only one renovation was undertaken in the 1950s, and at the close of 2015, repairs were sorely needed. During a whirlwind four-month project, the leaky roof was repaired, intricate rafters restored, original pews sanded and stained, sound and lighting fully upgraded, new wiring properly installed, confessionals remodeled, chandeliers polished, the old communion rail removed, and the altar extended toward the congregation to reflect liturgical reforms. The pipe organ was restored and expanded with 608 additional pipes. Finally, the cupola and sanctuary walls were carefully repainted to give a new lightness to the space.

In 2016, Loretto Motherhouse witnessed major improvements in communications technology to bring the physical equipment, computer and TV networks, digital telephone and overall functioning current with systems available in any metropolis. The original computer networks were installed in the 1950s (upper right). Now everything is new from the basic cable lines into the Nerinx, Ky., property to the fiberoptic wiring (opposite).

Loretto residents, staff and friends from the local community bid a fond and emotional farewell to the St. Louis Loretto Center in closing ceremonies Dec. 8. The Center has been sold to Nerinx Hall High School, which is adjacent to the property. Residents have relocated to the Motherhouse in Kentucky and staff members to other office space in St. Louis.

The Sisters of Loretto leadership were invited along with several other religious communities to confer with the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life (CICLSAL). Sisters Pearl McGivney, Vicki Schwartz and Denise Ann Clifford found time to visit some of the significant historical landmarks in that ancient city.
