A message from your president... Dear Cape Henry Rotarians:

It’s that time of year again. Can’t believe the time has sped by so quickly. We have had a busy December beginning with a wonderful Christmas Party at Chick’s Oyster Bar. We had Oysters, Steamed Shrimp, Barbeque, Smoked Fish Spread, Crab Dip, Chicken Wings, Veggies and much more. It was lots of fun! Don’t miss the pictures on pages 3 & 4. Sadly, it was the last time we saw our long time friend and fellow Rotarian, Bill Joseph, whom we lost on December 7. We also have a new member this month, Bob Lougen who is a Financial Services Executive. We welcome Bob to our club.

Cape Henry has again donated to Senior Wish List, which provides gifts for the elderly. Formerly this was known as Angel Tree for the Elderly.

Here’s wishing each and every one of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy 2016. Please enjoy your holiday with friends and family.

Best to you all, Judy

All of you have been given so many gifts. And you have now been given this great gift: one year to take all your talents, all your gifts, everything that you are and can become—and Be a Gift to the World.” —K.R. “Ravi” Ravindran

WILLIAM (BILL) JOSEPH May 8, 1937 - December 7, 2015

A Celebration of Life We lost our long time friend and fellow Rotarian, Bill Joseph on December 7. Bill was a founding member and very active in our club. He had 32 years perfect attendance and served as our prayer captain every Wednesday morning. Attending his Celebration of Life & Memorial Service on December 12, we collected money and sent a huge arrangement in Rotary Colors. To honor Bill as a dedicated Rotarian, and his 40 years at Virginia Wesleyan, the club voted for an annual $1000 scholarship in his namesake. Memorial gifts may be made to the Bill Joseph Book Fund (that he created and supported during his lifetime) at Virginia Wesleyan’s Hofheimer Library. The Joseph family will be notified of gifts received in his memory. For additional information, please contact Suzanne Savage at ext. 8736 or ssavage@vwc.edu. Bill was born on 05.08.37 to Alfred and Katherine Joseph of Delaware. Bill served in the army before completing his education at ECU. It was there he met and married his wife, Norma Fay Bright on 06.07.64. They settled in the Virginia Beach area, and he took a job as the comptroller in the business office with Virginia Wesleyan College, then started a family. He completed his master’s degree in business and spent many years as the Vice President of Finance at Wesleyan. Bill was very active in the Cape Henry Rotary Club, his church and VWC. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Faye Joseph; his children Mark Joseph (Sarah) and Michelle Brown; grandchildren, Liam Joseph, Rainy & Chantal Miles; brother Alfred Jr. (Caddie); and loving nieces & nephews.

In all things we think, say and do...The Four Way Test:

1.  Is it the TRUTH  2.  Is it FAIR to All Concerned  3.  Will it BUILD GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS  4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to All Concerned

ROTARY WOMEN FOR THEIR HUMANITARIAN SERVICE Judy Cocherell, Bob Lougen & Liz McEwen, Rotarian Sponsor

Senior Rotary leaders gathered Tuesday at the White House to honor 10 women for their service projects, an event attended by members of U.S. President Barack Obama’s senior staff. The Rotary members presented their projects, in the hopes of creating new inroads for government partnerships and support.

“This is recognition of the great work that they do but also serves as a great vehicle to inspire others to do similar kinds of things,” said Rotary General Secretary John Hewko.

“One of the things we’re doing a better job of is sharing our story to the non-Rotary world.” The honorees were selected by Rotary senior leaders and endorsed by the White House from clubs around the U.S. but their projects touch lives across the globe. Find out more at...

Rotary in Ostuno, Italy Barbara Moore

In June of 2010, I took at trip to Ostuni, Italy to teach fundamental English through Global Volunteers with my sister and a friend. While we were there, I wanted to visit local Italian Rotary clubs. I researched to see what club would be near where I was staying and found one really close. It was the Ostuni Rotary Club.

I shared this information with Jane Sullivan about my trip, and she thought it would be great to send English speaking children’s books to the Ostuni Club as an International Service activity. The club was very welcoming and invited us to the Presidents home for lunch. They presented me with their local art as an appreciation of the books. It was a great trip, and a memory I will always treasure. (look at my photo album for Ostuni on my FB page..it has pictures of my trip.)

ROTARY CLUB OF CAPE HENRY

Celebrations + a Special Tribute Starting holiday celebrations early in the month, we enjoyed fun and fellowship at Chick’s Oyster Bar for our annual Christmas party with one of Santa’s special elves’ spreading lots of smiles. Santa even brought his helper to one of our early morning meetings.

We welcomed our newest member to the club, Bob Lougen. Dave Zobel hosted a very special guest, Caron E. Crouse, CPA who shared great information on nonprofit charities and their legal structure within IRS tax guides.

You’re in great company as a

PAUL HARRIS FELLOW

T

The number of Paul Harris Fellows reached the one million mark in 2006.

he Paul Harris Fellow recognition acknowledges individuals who contribute, or who have contributions made in their name, of US$1,000 to The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.

It was established in 1957 to show appreciation for and encourage substantial contributions to what was then the Foundation’s only program, Rotary Foundation Fellowships for Advanced Study, the precursor to Ambassadorial Scholarships. The first Paul Harris Fellows include 1937-38 RI Director Allison G. Brush and longtime RI Treasurer Rufus F. Chapin, both for donations made in 1946. Mrs. Adan Vargas was the first woman to receive the recognition, for a gift made in 1953. Mrs. Harry L. Jones was the second, and one of only five people recognized for contributions made in 1957. Early Paul Harris Fellows received a certificate of recognition. In 1969, the Foundation unveiled the first Paul Harris Fellow

medallion at the RI Convention in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA. Japanese metal artist Fiju Tsuda created the piece under the direction of then-past Foundation Trustee Kyozo Yuasa. Today, Paul Harris Fellows receive a certificate and pin. They are also eligible to purchase a Paul Harris Fellow medallion.

Rotarians have a tradition of supporting the Foundation by honoring others. Ida LeTulle Taylor became a Paul Harris Fellow in 1978 when her husband, then-District Governor Vann Taylor, made a donation in her name in honor of their 34th wedding anniversary. The gift also made her the 25,000th Paul Harris Fellow. At the International Assembly in 1979, then-RI President-elect James Bomar challenged each Rotary club to make one non-Rotarian a Paul Harris Fellow. The Rotary Club of Pikesville, Maryland, USA, responded by making a donation in the name of Mother Teresa in 1980. The entertainer Pearl Bailey also became a Paul Harris Fellow through a joint effort of the Rotary clubs in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Many other notable figures have been named as Paul Harris Fellows, including U.S. President Jimmy Carter, Russian President Boris Yeltsin, U.S. astronaut James Lovell, UN Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar, and Jonas Salk.
