A message from your President...

Happy New Year! My, the time is speeding by this Rotary Year. I started the New Year by attending PrePETS in Richmond January 9 along with Rodger Schoonover, President Elect. We had a day full of meetings and learned lots of good things about Rotary. We had our first board meeting of the year on January 11 and discussed lots of things including Charity Goals, Monetary Goals and Club Goals.

From DRFC James Probsdorfer

FINISH STRONG IN 2015 - 2016 Dear Cape Henry Rotarians:

We are planning to have a Breakfast for Charities receiving grants on March 16. We will have the Public Service Awards Breakfast on March 9.

Dear Club President, Club Foundation Chair, Area Governor and Foundation Advocate, We conclude our five-part D7600 Foundation Awareness Series with our thoughts on the importance of the Paul Harris Society to the overall growth of our Rotary District. Did you know that fewer than 3% of Rotarians contribute at or above the PHS level, yet they represent over 35% of Annual Fund contributions?

We are applying for a Global Grant for our new Sister City of Olongapo in the Philippines for them to attend Fire Fighters Academy here in Virginia Beach.

All of you have been given so many gifts. And you have now been given this great gift: one year to take all your talents, all your gifts, everything that you are and can become—and Be a Gift to the World.”

—K.R. “Ravi” Ravindran

We just had the opportunity to visit with our Club Presidents at the Presidential Retreat last Saturday and, as we encourage our Rotary Clubs to ‘FINISH STRONG’ in 2015-16, let’s not forget how important it is to thank your Paul Harris Society members and ask other Rotarian to join. —DRFC Probs

Our Speakers for the month...

We have had some great speakers this year. On January 6 Karen Perkins was host Rotarian and the speakers were Lauren Cook and Pam Clendenen from Camp Gonnawannagoagain for Autistic Children. They also provide other programs for children with these special needs throughout the year. It was a great presentation.

On January 13 Buddy Redfearn hosted Dr. Scott Banks who spoke on “The World from a Cupcake Perspective” which was a fascinating talk about the dangers of diabetes due to the amount of processed food that most people eat. Very scary! On January 20 Bill Kee hosted George Lutz of Honor and Remember. His organization presents memorial flags to the families of fallen soldiers. He has a very personal reason for forming the organization as he and his wife lost a son in defense of our country. This was a very poignant and moving meeting and we learned about this great organization. George Lutz and Budd Redfearn 2

2016 - 2017

THEME UNVEILED

R

otary’s founder, Paul Harris, believed that serving humanity is “the most worthwhile thing a person can do,” RI President-elect John F. Germ said, and that being a part of Rotary is a “great opportunity” to make that happen. Germ unveiled the 2016-17 presidential theme, Rotary Serving Humanity, to incoming district governors on 18 January at the International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA.

I believe everyone recognizes the opportunity to serve Rotary for what it truly is: not a small opportunity, but a great one; an opportunity of a lifetime to change the world for the better, forever through Rotary’s service to humanity.”

Rotary members around the globe are serving humanity by providing clean water to underdeveloped communities, promoting peace in conflict areas, and strengthening communities through basic education and literacy. But none more important than our work to eradicate polio worldwide, he said. After a historic year in which transmission of the wild poliovirus was stopped in Nigeria and all of Africa, Germ said we are closer than ever to ending polio. “We are at a crossroads in Rotary,” he added. “We are looking ahead at a year that may one day be known as the greatest year in Rotary’s history: the year that sees the world’s last case of polio.” Last year’s milestones leave just two countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan, where the virus still circulates. Polio would be only the second human disease ever to be eradicated. When that moment arrives, it’s “tremendously important” that Rotary is ready for it, said Germ. “We need to be sure that we are recognized for that success, and leverage that success into more partnerships, greater growth, and even more ambitious service in the decades to come.” Germ, a member of the Rotary Club of Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA, encouraged attendees to return to their clubs and communities and spread the word about Rotary’s role in the fight for a polio-free world.

“People who want to do good will see that Rotary is a place where they can change the world. Every Rotary club needs to be ready to give them that opportunity,” Germ said. Enhancing Rotary’s image isn’t the only way to boost membership. “We need clubs that are flexible, so our service will be more attractive to younger members, recent retirees, and working people.”

He added: “We need more willing hands, more caring hearts, and more bright minds to move our work forward.”

HELP TO ENSURE EVERY CHILD CELEBRATES A BIRTHDAY

Recently, Pam Clendenen, Executive Director, and Lauren Cook, Marketing and Communication Specialist from Families of Austistic Children, FACT visited our club and shared how FACT helps children with autism. FACT is a recipient of funds from our club having been selected by the Charity committee and given funds from our Oyster Crush fundraiser.

Pam mentioned and touched some of us was how some of the children had not had a Birthday celebration due to not having friends that would understand their developmental disorders. Willie Kee, Karen Perkins and myself will be forming a committee to provide approximately 12 full sheet cakes to FACT functions to ensure there are Birthday celebrations for the kids.

We will need your help to do this and I am initially requesting money for the cakes. I will be passing a collection hat for funds to pay for future cakes and will be asking if member would like to help us deliver these cakes in the future.pm somewhere in Va. Beach. This would allow more Rotary members to see what their Oyster Crush fund raiser funds are helping to support in the area. If you would like to help and be apart of this effort please see one of us. Thanks, Gary Mah
