In 1932-33, millions of Ukrainians were purposely starved to death by the Soviet regime led by Joseph Stalin. To break the back of “nationalist” resistance to Soviet power, an ancient nation was condemned to death by artificial famine. All grain and foodstuffs were forcibly seized. The territory of Soviet Ukraine and the predominantly Ukrainian-populated Kuban region of the Northern Caucasus (Soviet Russia) were isolated by armed units, so that people could not go in search of food to the neighbouring regions where it was more readily available. In little more than a year, one-quarter of the population of Soviet Ukraine perished. The result was the Ukrainian genocide of 1932-33, known in Ukrainian as the Holodomor, (from “holod” meaning famine, and “moryty” meaning to kill). In November of each year, people worldwide honour the victims of this crime against humanity.

Wheat, the symbol of life, prosperity and spiritual wealth, is the grain that, for centuries, has been associated with the livelihood of many nati nations. During the Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (Holodomor) of 1932-33, however, it became a weapon of genocide orchestrated to destroy the very fabric of tthe Ukrainian nation.

On Aug. 7, 1932, Joseph Stalin and his Communist regime authored a law that sentenced to death or 10 years’ imprisonment anyone accused of the misappropriation of collective farm property. This law led to mass arrests and executions as hungry Ukrainians searched for the smallest scraps s of food. Even children caught picking handfuls of grain from fields were convicted. The law became known as the “Law of Five Ears of Grain.” international logo for The Ukrainian World Congress has adopted this logo as the inter Famine and Genocide the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Ukrainian Fami (Holodomor), 1932-33. depicting five stalks of Its design symbolizes the law of “Five Ears of Grain” by depict wheat delicately bound with a black ribbon. The logo will serve as a reminder of the devastation characterized by the law, as well as the Ukrainian nation’s determination to live and prosper.

• The Soviet regime dumped 1.7 million tons of grain on the Western markets at the height of the Holodomor.

Censuses • In late 1932 — precisely when the famine struck — the Central Statistical Bureau in Moscow ceased to publish demographic data.

• On Stalin’s orders, those who conducted the 1937 census, which revealed a sharp decrease in the Ukrainian population as a result of the Holodomor, were shot, while the census results were suppressed.

On May 7, 2008, Saskatchewan became the first province in Canada to recognize the Holodomor as an act of genocide through the passage of Bill 40: An Act to Recognize the Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (Holodomor).

Introduced by Deputy Premier Ken Krawetz, with the unanimous support of MLA’s from both the Government and Official Opposition, Bill 40 has enshrined the fourth Saturday in November in each year is as “Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (Holodomor) Memorial Day” for the purposes of recognizing the Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (Holodomor) of 1932-33 and for the reflection on the lessons to be learned from that event.

Wheat, the symbol of life, prosperity and spiritual wealth, is the grain that, for centuries, has been associated with the livelihood of many nations. During the Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (Holodomor) of 1932-33, however, it became a weapon of genocide orchestrated to destroy the very fabric of the Ukrainian nation.

On Aug. 7, 1932, Joseph Stalin and his Communist regime authored a law that sentenced to death or 10 years’ imprisonment anyone accused of the misappropriation of collective farm property. This law led to mass arrests and executions as hungry Ukrainians searched for the smallest scraps of food. Even children caught picking handfuls of grain from fields were convicted. The law became known as the “Law of Five Ears of Grain.”

The Ukrainian World Congress has adopted this logo as the international logo for the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (Holodomor), 1932-33.

Its design symbolizes the law of “Five Ears of Grain” by depicting five stalks of wheat delicately bound with a black ribbon. The logo will serve as a reminder of the devastation characterized by the law, as well as the Ukrainian nation’s determination to live and prosper.

The logo was designed by Ukrainian Canadian artist Oleh Lesiuk.

Для багатьох народів зерно пшениці протягом століть асоціювалося із символом життя, процвітання, духовного багатства. Однак, у 1932-33 рокax Голодомору-Геноциду в Україні - воно стало зброєю геноциду, призначеного знищити основи української нації.

7 серпня 1932 , Йосип Сталін та його комуністичний режим створили закон, який засуджував кожну людину, звинувачену в розкраданні колгоспної власності, до смертної кари або 10 років позбавлення волі. Цей закон призвів до масових арештів і розстрілів голодуючих українців, що, намагаючись вижити, шукали найменші залишки їжі. Навіть дітей, пійманих із жменею підібраного на полі зерна, було засуджено. Цей закон став відомим під назвою “Закону про п’ять колосків”. • The 1931 harvest was 18.3 million tons of grain.

• The 1932 harvest was 14.6 million tons of grain.

• The 1933 harvest was 22.3 million tons of grain.

• The Soviet regime dumped 1.7 million tons of grain on the Western markets at the height of the Holodomor.

Censuses • In late 1932 — precisely when the famine struck — the Central Statistical Bureau in Moscow ceased to publish demographic data.

• On Stalin’s orders, those who conducted the 1937 census, which revealed a sharp decrease in the Ukrainian population as a result of the Holodomor, were shot, while the census results were suppressed.

У 1932-33 роках мільйони українців було навмисно замучено голодом радянською владою на чолі зі Сталіним. Щоб зламати хребет “націоналістичного” опору радянській владі, прадавній народ був засуджений до смертної кари через штучний голод. Усе зерно та продукти харчування було силоміць вилучено. Територія Радянської України і Кубані, переважно українських поселень на Північному Кавказі (радянська Росія), були ізольовані збройними формуваннями. Людей не пускали до сусідніх регіонів на пошуки продовольства, де харчі були доступними. Протягом трохи більше року чверть населення радянської України було знищено. Наслідком такої політики став геноцид 1932-33 років, відомий в Україні як Голодомор. Щороку, в листопаді місяці, люди всього світу вшановують пам’ять жертв цього злочину проти людства.

On May 7, 2008, Saskatchewan became the first province in Canada to recognize the Holodomor as an act of genocide through the passage of Bill 40: An Act to Recognize the Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (Holodomor).

Introduced by Deputy Premier Ken Krawetz, with the unanimous support of MLA’s from both the Government and Official Opposition, Bill 40 has enshrined the fourth Saturday in November in each year is as “Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (Holodomor) Memorial Day” for the purposes of recognizing the Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (Holodomor) of 1932-33 and for the reflection on the lessons to be learned from that event.

Keeping the Flame Alive In Ukraine and abroad

The Parliament of Ukraine, the Verkhovna Rada, called for international recognition of the Holodomor as genocide in three resolutions adopted during 2002-03. Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada voted on Nov. 28, 2006, to recognize the Ukrainian famine of 1932-33 as an act of genocide by enacting legislation the Закон України «Про Голодомор 1932–1933 років в Україні» “Act on the 1932-33 Holodomor in Ukraine.” Following Ukraine’s lead, supported by the wealth of information available, nations around the world have joined in recognizing the “Holodomor.”

In Canada

The Senate of Canada adopted unanimously on June 19, 2003, a resolution calling upon the Government of Canada: • to recognize the Ukrainian Famine/Genocide of 1932-33 and to condemn any attempt to deny or distort this historical truth as being anything less than genocide; • to designate the fourth Saturday in November of every year throughout Canada as a day of remembrance of the more than seven million Ukrainians who fell victim to the Ukrainian Famine/Genocide of 1932-33; and • to call on all Canadians, particularly historians, educators and parliamentarians, to include the true facts of the Ukrainian Famine/ Genocide of 1932-33 in the records of Canada and in future educational material.

The Government of Canada recognized the Holodomor in May 2008 with an Act declaring the famine an act of genocide and establishing a national Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (Holodomor) Memorial Day.

UCC Saskatchewan seeks Holodomor Survivors or Family Members

The Holodomor Awareness Committee of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress — Saskatchewan Provincial Council (UCC SPC) is seeking the names of Saskatchewan survivors or family members of the 1932-33 Ukrainian famine genocide known as the “Holodomor.” Their stories and living testimonies are important in the building of provincial, national and global understanding and acceptance of this man-made atrocity, which took between seven and 10 million lives.

If you know of such a person or are in possession of family/personal archives, please contact the UCC SPC office at 1-888-652-5850 or email UCC SPC Holodomor Awareness Committee member Robert Wuschenny at r.wuschenny@sasktel.net. May their names and stories live on.

These 80 stories, as told by survivors living around the world, are representative of the stories of so many who experienced the wrath of a genocidal policy deliberately implemented with the goal of destroying a nation.
