Melissa Rayworth The Associated Press The arrival of spring means that flea markets are reopening for business around the country. Shoppers will hunt for treasures amid acres of used goods. A few will come home with just the right vintage art or quirky piece of furniture to make their home more beautiful. Jaime Rummerfield, cofounder of Woodson & Rummerfield’s House of Design in Los Angeles, sometimes mixes flea-market finds with high-end new furnishings to decorate the homes of her celebrity clients. “The beauty of flea markets,” she says, “is you never know what you will find. There’s nothing like being outdoors or in a place off the beaten path rummaging through old treasures.”

Flynn recommends ignoring existing upholstery and focusing solely on the lines of each piece. Los Angeles-based interior designer Brian Patrick Flynn, creator of the FlynnsideOut design blog, also hunts for vintage pieces: “I
shop second-hand regardless of my project’s budget or client’s level of taste,” he says. “Vintage and thrift is the best way to add one-of-a-
kind flair to a space without insanely high cost.” There is luck involved, but skill also plays a role. As you browse crowded tables of
used things this spring, how can you find the treasures that will give your home an infusion of style while avoiding decorating disasters?
Winter and early spring are perfect for flea-market shopping, says Flynn. “Since ‘thrifting’ and ‘antiquing’ are often associated with gorgeous weather and weekend shenanigans, m a ny p e o p l e s hy aw ay from hunting for their vintage finds when it’s cold or gloomy,” he notes, so go now and go early. “I usually show up just as the flea market opens to ensure I see every new item as it’s put out on display,” he says. “When you wait until the end of a flea market’s run to check out its stuff, you’re likely to find mostly leftovers, things priced too highly which others passed over, or things that are just way too taste specific for most people to make offers on.”

Time travel Rummerfield occasionally finds signed artwork and ceramics by noteworthy artists at flea markets and antique malls. “It is amazing to see what people cast away,” she says. “I personally hunt for Sasha Brastoff ceramics because of his unique California heritage as a set decorator and artist.” She has also found vintage Billy Haines chairs and Gio Ponti lighting at flea markets. So read up on the designers and artists from your favourite periods, and then hunt for their work or impressive knock-offs. A single flea market might offer goods from every decade of the 20th century. Can you put a lamp from the 1970s on a table from 1950? Yes, if the shapes and colours work well together, Kleinhelter says. If your home has contemporary decor, Rummerfield says it can be powerful to add one statement piece — a side table, say, or a light fixture — from a previous era. But “a little bit goes a long way. Use vintage in moderation with contemporary spaces,” Rummerfield says. “It will highlight the uniqueness of the vintage item. You don’t necessarily want to live in a time capsule.”

Designer Brian Patrick Flynn of Flynnside Out Blog says just adding one or two vintage touches, like this 1970s chrome rocker, to a space can instantly add a sense of history to a room. “This way, they can actually lower their prices since you’re guaranteeing them more sales, which in turn also makes their packing up and leaving much easier.” You should bargain, but don’t go so low that you’ll insult the seller. “If something is marked $185, it’s probably not ideal to offer $50,” Flynn says. One option is to negotiate for a 25-per-cent to 35-percent discount. And do bring cash. “Mom and pop dealers don’t have the luxury of taking credit cards due to the charges acquired,” Flynn says. “If you bring enough cash with you, you’re more likely to be able to negotiate successfully.”
Fixer-uppers You may assume that old upholstered furniture should be avoided, especially if the fabric looks dirty or damaged. But these designers say it’s actually a great thing to hunt for: “Hands down, upholstery is the best deal to walk away with at flea markets. Just make sure you train your eye to pay no attention to the existing fabrics,” Flynn says. “Zero in on the lines of the frames instead.” Kleinhelter agrees: “I usually gravitate toward the bones and frames of vintage pieces, and I make them my own by adding fun fabric or lacquering the base.” The same goes for lighting. Buy it if you love it, but get the wiring updated by a professional. Flynn usually estimates an extra $50 to $75 per fixture for updating the wiring, so keep that cost in mind as you bargain.
Mix and match Be on the lookout for pieces you can use together. “You don’t need multiples of the same chair or sofa to make a room work,” Flynn says. “Stick with those which have similar scale and proportion,

Above all, choose items that delight you. “I never focus on eras or hunt for specific designers,” Kleinhelter says. “Pick what you like.” And be open to serendipity. “When I’m looking for furniture, I always stumble across a good vintage jewelry or clothing vendor and end up with a fun bauble of a bracelet or necklace,” Rummerfield says. “Prices are usually so reasonable, you come away with a good amount of loot. It is always a day well spent.”

I had company and decided to barbecue chicken breast. It was horrible. Tasteless and dry are the best words to describe that embarrassing disaster. I barbecued the meat for only seven minutes on each side. Where did I go wrong? A: Here’s my favourite trick for barbecued chicken. Begin by marinating a chicken breast for at least a few hours in Italian salad dressing, salt and pepper. While still in marinade, bake chicken in the oven at 350 F (175 C) for 30 minutes. Next, barbecue chicken on medium heat for about four minutes per side. Cut through the thickest part of the meat to ensure no pink remains. Delicious!

Give them a few hours of sun and warmer temperatures, and happiness results; we start looking for ways to freshen our wardrobes and our homes. There’s a number of cheery items coming to Crate and Barrel’s CB2 (cb2.com), where shelves are always stocked with upbeat stuff. Fishie vases are available in two sizes
Should eggs be in or out of the shell when bringing them to room temperature? I think that out of the shell would help them warm faster. Also, what is the difference between evaporated and condensed milk? I figure they aren’t interchangeable and wonder what purposes they serve. A: Years ago I must have wasted a dozen eggs trying to create meringue, the egg whites would not whip. I later realized the problem was the egg whites weren’t at room temperature. Bring eggs to room temperature by setting them on the counter 30 minutes prior to use. Typically people do so by keeping them in the shell during this process, unless the egg requires separation (separating eggs is easier when they are cold). To quickly bring eggs to room temperature, place them (in shell) in a bowl of warm water for 10 minutes. The difference between evaporated and condensed milk is the sugar content: one is sweetened, one is not. Both begin as whole milk. Evap-
orated milk is made by heating whole milk until approximately 60 per cent of the water is evaporated. Condensed milk is made by first blending whole milk with sugar. It is then heated until about 60 per cent of the water is evaporated. Condensed and evaporated milk differ in flavour and thickness, and that makes a difference when substituting one for another in recipes.

With spring here, many of you will starting to take on home projects. My advice: Leave the bigger, more complicated jobs to the professionals, because you could do more damage than good. Planning minor projects around the house — such as painting, drywall repairs, finishes, trim work or even gardening? You might think a small job isn’t dangerous, but no job is safe without the right protection and protocols. Follow these tips to stay safe: ■■ Wear safety gear: If you’re sawing, sanding or drilling you’ll need protective eyewear and a respirator, especially if there’s d e b r i s a n d d u s t fly i n g around. There are different respirators for different jobs — make sure you wear the right one. Also, if you’re using loud tools you’ll need ear plugs or earmuffs (not the kind you wear in winter.) Don’t wait to lose your hearing to start protecting it! ■■ Don’t use gas-powered tools in enclosed areas: You need plenty of ventilation, and opening a window or door isn’t going to cut it. No amount of carbon monoxide (CO) is safe. People have suffered serious neurological damage because they didn’t know better. ■■ B e w a r e h a z a r d o u s fumes: Some people think because a label has “green” on it the product is safe. Not the case. Look at paints. The label might say it’s low-VOCs (volatile organic compounds) or VOC-free, but the pigment added to it could contain

Most DIY projects around the home require a combination of safety gear, including work gloves, protective eyewear, respirators, earplugs and proper workwear. VOCs. Also, a VOC-free label doesn’t mean you can paint with the doors closed. Always make sure you have enough ventilation and always use the right respirator, no matter how small the job or the type of paint you use. ■■ Consider asbestos: Considering doing repairs to plaster or stucco in a home built before 1980? Be careful; it could contain asbestos. If it does, don’t disturb it — that means no sanding, no chipping, no chiselling, nothing. Disturbing asbestos releases tiny asbestos fibres into the air. If you breathe them in they get lodged in your lungs. We stopped using asbestos in the late 1970s, but it can be
found in many homes built or renovated before then. It can be in attic insulation (vermiculite), ceilings tiles, drywall, plaster, textured paints, vinyl tiles — including the adhesives used to install them — and insulation around pipes, ducts and hot water tanks. If you’re not sure if your home has asbestos, call in a professional testing and abatement company. ■■ Wear proper clothing: No shorts and sandals. Wear steel-toe work boots when doing landscaping or moving heavy stones. Too many broken or injured feet could have been avoided. Wear proper clothing made from thick material, like duck canvas, because even while
doing simple jobs you can walk by something sharp. Use knee pads — you’ll appreciate it when you’re older. And keep your hair tied back — guys too — especially when using power tools. Make sure you can see what you’re doing and nothing is in your way. ■■ Keep it clean: One day I was helping my dad gut a room and the floor got completely covered with garbage. My dad told me to stop and clean it up, but I was almost done so I told him I’d clean up later. I needed to pull down the rest of the ceiling so I grabbed a chair. What I didn’t know was one of the legs was standing on top of debris that was cover-
ing a hole in the floor for the heat register. When I stood on the chair the leg went through the hole and I hit the ground. The first thing my dad asked was if I was OK. The second thing was, “Does that teach you anything?” Safety is a no-brainer. How long does it take to put on safety gloves, safety glasses and a respirator? Now think about how long you would have to live with the consequences of an accident, or breathing in toxic chemicals or debris? There’s no comparison. Kyla Rozman, owner of Vancouver-based In Order To Succeed Professional Organizing Inc., says people waste a lot of time hunting for items at home and work because their things don’t have a permanent spot. The organizing expert says one of the most important steps to keeping a home neat and organized is assigning a place for items, especially if the space is being shared with other people. Containers are an essential tool for creating a spot for stuff. The container, box or basket creates clear defined borders, which keeps items from being pushed into the back of a cupboard or drawer, or becoming confused with other things that may be cluttering the space. “A container is really powerful as well because it creates a limit,” she says. “The homeowner commits that once the container is full you can’t add another container beside it, and you have to get rid of something to add something.” Choosing the right container is also an essential
