Smart storage keeps kitchen tidy Organize space before moving in MEGAN COLE THE CANADIAN PRESS VICTORIA — Kitchen cupboards and drawers contain pieces that make a kitchen work, but they also help homeowners hide disorganization and clutter. Creating a functional and efficient kitchen is something it’s best for homeowners to do as soon as they move into their house. “It is an overwhelming task to organize a kitchen,” says Angela Robinson, a Vancouver interior designer. “There is a lot to sort and put away. If you don’t get organized from the day you move in it is hard to empty out your kitchen and

start from scratch. “The kitchen is essentially a room full of hiding places like drawers and cupboards you can close and hide clutter. It is a place people neglect to organize because they can close the doors, and it looks like a clean space.” Even though cupboard doors can hide mess, Robinson says they can help homeowners organize by creating vertical space to hang things like pot lids and frying pans. Stacking is a common way to store items in a kitchen, but Robinson says in her home hanging items makes her space more efficient. “What I’ve done is I have stacked my pots and pans, and for the lids I put up screws in the backs of the cupboard doors where I hang all my lids,” she explains. “My frying pans are also hung within my cupboards

too. I can access all of them easily because they aren’t stacked. We don’t use the vertical space in our kitchens, particularly in cupboards, enough and they are a great way to organize.” Homeowners are including walls of peg board, commonly used in retail displays to organize product, to hang everything from pans to wooden spoons and graters. Maximizing space for efficient storage is important when creating an organized kitchen, and Robinson says investing in square, stackable storage containers can reduce clutter and also reduce spending at the grocery store. “It’s hard to differentiate things when they are all in bags,” she says. “If things are visible and organized, you can find them quickly, which means you don’t spend as much money.

Storage Square containers are efficient Continued from D1 “I don’t know how many times I’ve bought something that I already have eight of because I wasn’t able to easily locate it and see how much I have.” Using square containers rather than round jars or canisters allows homeowners to use the maximum space of their cupboards and drawers for storage. Modern houses can include a variety of efficient storage options like pullout shelves, but older kitchens aren’t built to accommodate the larger and bulkier appliances home cooks use today.

“a lazy Susan in a corner or sliding shelves create efficient and functional stor age.” Taryn Bradshaw “We have a lot more stuff than people ever did, and a lot of times older houses aren’t equipped to handle storage of some of the stuff we use more regularly like larger mixers, food processors and blenders,” says Taryn Bradshaw of DIY Cabinet Warehouse in Edmonton. Homeowners are also struggling to accommodate municipal policies relating to recycling and composting. “The new regulations around waste reduction mean homeowners have to sort the recycling and compost, increasing the need for more bins for sorting and storage,” says Bradshaw. Instead of just putting a garbage bin under the sink, Bradshaw says there are pullout shelves that al-

Q I use felt pads that stick to the

bottom of chairs. Before putting fresh felt pads on I spend time cleaning the grit and glue off using Goo Gone and sandpaper, but they keep coming off. I have even tried gluing the pads using a glue gun and still they come off. I have a new tile floor in the kitchen and new laminate flooring in the dining room and don’t want them scratched. A Forget the glue. It doesn’t hold because it is being absorbed into the felt pads, so the glue’s strength won’t make a difference. Purchase either a plastic or wooden leg protector and nail kit (the nail is hammered directly into the chair foot). Or purchase properly fitted, rubber chair protectors that slide onto chair feet. Another option is Flexi-Felt (flexifelt.com), which its creators tout as an alternative to sticky felt pads that don’t last. It comes with a smart install tool to adjust to fit any chair leg shape.

Q&A

MAKE IT RIGHT

Time to pull plug on your tub?

There are spaces you shouldn’t reno

JEFFREY FISHER FOR POSTMEDIA NEWS

Q:

I purchased my two-bedroom condo five years ago and the building is now 15 years old. Needless to say, my unit needs freshening up. I want to renovate my master bathroom and replace the bathtub that I never use with a decentsize shower. Friends have advised against this because of resale. I’d like to know your thoughts and if you have any design ideas. A: Your question is a good one and certainly not the first time I’ve heard it. In fact, I’ve toyed with the idea myself but have never carried through with it because there are about three times a year that I like to have a nice long soak in my bathtub. I’ve always speculated that there must be others who share my infrequent fondness for Epsom salts and so I continue to put off my bathroom reno. You don’t mention whether you have a second bathroom that also has a tub. If you do, then for resale purposes you have the tub box already ticked, in which case I encourage you to do what pleases you with your master bathroom. And because your friends cautioned you against your conversion idea, I have to guess your second bathroom has only a shower or this probably wouldn’t be a question at all. I’m no realtor (and perhaps you should seek one’s opinion before you decide), but I assume that having a bathtub in a two-bedroom, two-bathroom unit casts a wider net for potential sales opportunities than no tub and two showers. Having said that, should you decide to proceed with your renovation, take inspiration from the two photos here. Both bathrooms are designed by DKOR Interiors (dkorinteriors.com) and make a strong design argument for saying goodbye to a bathtub. Note how the designer has kept the tiling, fixtures and details clean-lined and minimum. Each bathroom maintains a modern-yettimeless feel that gives the illusion of being more spacious than they actually are. Sometimes simple is simply the best way to go.

MIKE HOLMES Make it Right

PHOTOS: ALEXIA FODERE

A large shower now sits where a bathtub originally was in this bathroom. The glass shower doors open up the space and let light filter through while the horizontal tiles makes the room look larger. Notice that both bathrooms have a feature wall of tiles. By tiling a wall from floor to ceiling, the room appears taller. I especially like how the brown horizontal tiles (made to resemble wood) carry through into the shower. This makes the room appear wider than it is, with only the glass separating the shower space. I have friends who eliminated the bathtub with their master bathroom renovation and created a walk-in shower for two with a hand-held shower kit at one end and a stationary fixture at the other. I have to admit at the time I wondered if they were overdesigning their limited space, but after house-sitting for them and using the shower, I understood the appeal. As with any good design project, it’s all in the details. If you decide to go ahead with the conversion, I think the key to resale lies in the design of the space and the selections you make. Potential buyers may well overlook the fact that there is no bath-

A bathroom designed by DKOR Interiors features clean lines and a tiled wall leading the eye up. tub if there’s a wow factor to the room itself. And really, in the end, what matters most is whether or not the bathroom suits your needs and makes you happy. Good luck with it. Send your decor question to askjeffreyfisher@gmail.com.

The purpose of most renovations is to increase livable space. But sometimes you shouldn’t do it because you could risk your investment and your home’s structural integrity and safety. For example, when people buy a newly constructed home, they usually want to finish the basement right away. But the general rule of thumb is to wait at least a year. I’d wait at least two, let it go through a couple of freezing-and-thawing cycles to see if any leaks or cracks show up. The last thing you want is to spend $30,000 to $50,000 only to rip out the work to fix a problem. Also, you don’t turn a utility room into a livable space with finished walls and flooring because you need to have direct access to the systems there. Makes sense. But the big one people always ask me about is the attic. Attics aren’t meant to be living spaces, so turning them into one requires a lot of money, work, permits and engineering. It can also lead to problems. An attic’s job is to help insulate the house, prevent heat from escaping and deter condensation that can cause mould and/or rot. Turning it into a living space means changing the roof, electrical, HVAC and, most importantly, the structure. And what about heating? Can your furnace handle heating that additional space? Not to mention the extra ductwork, heat registers and adding a cold-air return. I would avoid it altogether and use your attic for what it’s built to do: Protect your home. Another area people are tempted to finish is the crawl space. A crawl space is basically a partial foundation that’s about four to five feet deep — just deep enough to get be-

low the frost line. It’s usually cold, dark and damp — it might even have a dirt floor. Most people want to finish them for storage purposes or to help keep the living spaces above warm and reduce heating bills — never a bad idea. There are two basic ways of dealing with a crawl space: Turning it into a warm zone or making it a proper cold zone. Converting it to a warm zone means closing off the venting, insulating the foundation walls, laying down vapour barrier, gravel and rigid foam board on the floor and then adding a heating duct and cold-air return. If you close off the vents and don’t add heating and a cold-air return you will get moisture. Now, you could do all this work and still have the floor above the crawl space cold. (I’ve never been in a room above a crawl space where the floor isn’t cold.) So the other option is making it a proper cold zone by insulating the floor above and sealing it with vapour barrier, then making sure there’s enough ventilation. Some people say vapour barrier can trap moisture against the floor joists and cause them to rot, but if you properly insulate the floor above you shouldn’t have warm air meeting cold. Then there are homeowners who want to turn the crawl space into a full basement, which involves excavation and underpinning or bench pinning. It’s a massive job and doing it wrong leads to major structural damage that can affect the entire home. I wouldn’t recommend it unless you are 150 per cent sure it will be done right and you have a very, very big budget. No matter what renovation you take on, your top priority is your home’s health and safety. Sometimes it’s best to not renovate at all, which is strange advice coming from a contractor. There’s an art to placing art in the home, says Edmonton decor specialist and home stager Brenda Acheson. While a bare wall can leave a home feeling bereft, indiscriminately chosen art “will give you no pleasure, and poorly placed art will disturb the visual balance of a room.” What we select and how we display it tell a great deal about who we are, Acheson says. “Our art weaves a narrative of where we’ve been and what our tastes and interests are.” We sought Acheson’s advice on how to be the curator of your own home gallery.

purpose? Art can actually solve design issues. An image with depth, such as a landscape, will make a small room seem bigger, while an abstract image with no depth will create a visual barrier that lends greater intimacy to a large space.

A:

Selecting a warm wall colour will help to set off paintings arranged in salon style.

Q:

What advice do you have for choosing art? A: Listen to your heart, and surround yourself with what you love. The art in your home should give you joy. Find the best art you can afford, going for quality over quantity, and collect over time. To build value, choose originals over reproductions, and limited-edition prints over copies that are mass produced. Be open to different media. Plates, masques or weavings can add texture and dimension to your collection.

Q: What are the biggest mistakes

people make in hanging art? Choosing pieces too small for the space at hand and hanging them too high. Art should be enjoyed from both a standing and seated position without having to crane your neck.

A:

Q:

How do you place art for the best effect? A: When using art to create a focal point, go big or group a number of smaller pieces (see Salon Style sidebar). Define a block of wall space, such as the area directly above your sofa, and fill two-thirds of it, either with one large piece or a grouping.

Paintings by Joyce McRory are arranged salon style in the artist’s home. The grouping works especially well as the frames are similar in style and colour.

SALON STYLE Hanging art in arranged groupings is called “salon style,” unlike “museum style,” where pieces are displayed along a horizontal plane, at roughly the same height. Salon style originated in Paris at a time when democratic values were emerging. Don’t clutter very large artwork by surrounding it with other, smaller pieces. Left alone, a larger piece will have more impact. The centre of a painting should be about 150 centimetres from the floor. The bottom edge of a painting or group of paintings should be 13 to 18 centimetres above the sofa.

The intention was to bring more art to the masses. Today, it has become a chic way to display art in the home. For an excellent video by New York gallery owner Bill Powers on how to hang art salon style, visit Bit.ly/XMRw2C. Shelves, mounted ledges and picture rails are great ways to display collections. You get the effect of the gallery wall without all the nail holes, and you have the flexibility to move things around. Consistent mats and framing are key to creating a unified, uncluttered look for groupings.

Shake, muddle and stir like a Mad Man at home MEGAN COLE THE CANADIAN PRESS VICTORIA — As cocktail culture becomes trendy in lounges and bars across Canada, there’s increasing interest in bringing a piece of it home. The desire to shake, muddle and stir vintage cocktails has no doubt also been fuelled by popular television shows like Boardwalk Empire and Mad Men, along with the prevalence of food and cooking shows. “With the Internet (and) Food Network ... everyone wants to be Jamie Oliver and be bartenders at home now,” says Shawn Soole, bartender, general manager and proprietor of Little Jumbo Restaurant and Bar in Victoria B.C., and author of Cocktail Culture: Recipes & Techniques from Behind the Bar (Touchwood Editions). As cocktail making becomes a popular hobby, Soole warns it can be an expensive

one and says many of his customers at Little Jumbo, and Clive’s Cocktail Lounge in Victoria (where he used to work), buy equipment that is more expensive than what he uses at the restaurant. “Once you start entertaining and that sort of thing it goes from being what you do at a house party to something more serious,” he says. “Our customers will buy the top-of-the-line mixing glasses from Japan and gold-plated spoons. They start travelling and buying products in the U.S. and bringing them back, so it can get out of hand as an expensive little hobby.” Even though there are a lot of high-end cocktail tools on the market, Soole says there are only four essential pieces needed to make great drinks. “I always say you need a two-piece Boston shaker, and the reason why is, they are a bit more finicky and hard to get used to as an amateur cocktail maker but they can be used in a lot more ways,”

he says. A Boston shaker can be used to stir, shake and muddle (mash up spices and herbs) for a wide range of cocktails. He says a bartender also needs an ergonomically designed bar spoon, a Hawthorne strainer and a jigger. While the tools and ingredients are important for making great drinks, homeowners are also trying to enhance the overall homecocktail bar experience. “The trend is definitely there,” says Tamara Bowman, owner and lead designer at Metric Design Centre in Saskatoon. “It is all a part of entertaining and it is such a big part of people’s lifestyles now. We have very few hours at home. We want to enjoy them with friends or family, and entertaining is a big part of that.” Unlike the dated bars of the past, Bowman says homeowners are including feature lighting to highlight wine displays, wine coolers and also backsplashes with stone.
