Easy ways to freshen up a fireplace Painting, cladding both work
Build around the chimney
JEFFREY FISHER POSTMEDIA NEWS
Q My husband and I moved into a great new home last year. It’s a charming threebedroom bungalow built in the 1960s. This fall, we want to freshen up the living room and change out the patio doors that lead off it. The living room has a large red brick fireplace (floor to ceiling), which I dislike, though it doesn’t bother my husband. I realize if we decide to paint it there’s no going back, so I waver over what to do. My husband will live with whatever I choose to do. Do you have an opinion one way or the other? A This is indeed a tough decision and I completely understand you vacillating. And without knowing your decor style, I’m not sure I want the responsibil-

A fireplace can be updated by painting the brick dark taupe, left, or installing tongue-and-groove cladding, right. ity resting on my shoulders either. Having made my disclaimer, I’m going to throw out a few ideas and see if one resonates more than another with you and your husband.
Leave the brick as is Hang a large piece of art (but not an expensive one if you’re burning wood in your fireplace). Sometimes something as simple as a distraction can make you dislike a flaw less. The key to leaving the brick unpainted is mak-
ing sure your wall colour is painted a fresh, complementary tone. If you have mid-century furniture (or touches of) you may want to keep your walls a crisp white, hang interesting art and embrace the retro feel of your home. If that’s not the case, consider a light- or mid-grey colour to complement the brick. I would avoid golden tones because, even though it may complement the brick, it’s going to date the room.
Paint the brick But don’t get tricky or fancy with the colour. The fireplace is undoubtedly the largest object in your living room so it shouldn’t be painted an experimental novelty colour. Keep to medium or dark grey, taupe or white. I would not paint your fireplace the same colour as your walls unless you go with white. I f yo u r f u r n i s h i n g s are shabby chic, cottagey,
loft-like or even transitional then white walls and a white fireplace should work well. The room pictured here by Alter Studio (alterstudio. net) features, with great success, a fireplace painted dark taupe. The rug holds the only pattern in the room and from that the accent colours of the room are derived. This room is contemporary but comfortable and could definitely provide inspiration for you.
Cover the red brick you dislike and simultaneously create a hearty mantel that is in scale with the room and the fireplace. Crisp Architects (crisparchitects.com) created a magnificent fireplace, also seen here, by cladding the chimney above the mantel in painted tongueand-groove. The mantel is detailed without being overdone, and the scale fits the size of the room (this gorgeous fireplace and seating area is in the kitchen!) perfectly. The exposed brick surround creates a more relaxed feel — but if your bricks are still a distraction to you, then paint them. Because I don’t know your design style or budget it’s hard for me (and not fair to you) to give you a definitive path to follow, but I feel that among my three suggestions there will be one (or a combination) that resonates with you.

What to expect from your home inspection

MIKE HOLMES Make it Right
THE HOLMES GROUP
A home inspection is a non-invasive assessment to identify any major problems and help reduce risk. sues. For example, in older homes issues could include: ■ Knob and tube wiring — some insurance companies might charge a higher premium or refuse to insure the house. ■ Lead water supply piping — it’s soft and can get damaged easily. Over time, the pipe will erode and can eventually rupture. Also water in the pipe can pick up the lead, which is toxic if consumed. ■ Galvanized steel piping — the pipe will rust, which can lead to rust-coloured water. The rust can also cause low water flow (pressure) or rupture the pipe.

Autumn ushers in winter preparation for many homeowners. If you’re one of them, the best thing you can do is get a maintenance inspection. This way, if you find out you need to fix the roof, insulation or windows, you have time to get it done before winter arrives. I get a lot of questions about home inspections: Are they worth the money? Who should I hire? How can it help? But what people really need to understand is what is a home inspection. A home inspection is a visual, non-invasive evaluation of the home at the time of inspection — not six months later or two years after the inspection. Non-invasive means the inspectors can evaluate only the stuff they see. They can’t move things, poke behind walls and so on. They can’t even move furniture or rugs! Yes, they should have a ladder to assess the roof. Yes, they should have a flashlight so they can inspect the attic, crawl space and dark corners. But you can’t expect a home inspector to find everything that’s wrong with a house. A home has hundreds of different parts. The average home inspection lasts about 2.5 hours and some run up to 3.5 hours. A home inspector can spend only about 15 minutes on each area, whereas a specialized pro will spend at least a couple of hours on one specific part. A home inspector is like a family doctor — they’re a generalist and if they find an issue with a specific part of the house, such as the plumbing, HVAC or venting, they will recommend bringing in a pro who specializes in that area — just as a doctor would recommend a specialist. Do you skip the doctor and go straight to the specialist? No, because you need someone who can give you a general idea on the entire system. There are things you need to do as the homeowner to get the most out of the inspection. Followup is essential. The first step is to read the report. Go through it item by item, making sure you understand what everything means. If you don’t, call the inspector and ask questions. Pros love to explain and educate, especially to people who want to learn. Every good inspector I know is happy to answer questions. Next, if the report recommends a more thorough followup inspection on a specific part of the house, get a professional who specializes in that area to come in as soon as possible — especially if you’re thinking of buying the house. Results can be a deal breaker. When a home inspector recommends bringing in a specialist, it’s because they expect them to find more is-
■ Vermiculite — some vermiculite contains asbestos. ■ Asbestos — it’s not harmful if left undisturbed, but if you’re planning a renovation it must be remediated before work can start and that can increase the cost. The goal of a home inspection is risk reduction — it’s not a guarantee of no problems. I always tell homeowners to get a home inspection, especially when buying a house. Otherwise, you’re buying an illusion and asking for trouble. Watch Mike Holmes on Holmes Makes It Right on HGTV. For more information visit makeitright.ca.

Fiona Douglas, with her Bluebellgray designed pillows, bedsheets and headboard. She tries where possible to manufacture her creations in the countries where they’re sold.
Born in Scotland, made in Canada Hudson Bay sells Douglas designs LAUREN LA ROSE THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO — After handpainting the lush florals and abstract prints that adorn her designs, Fiona Douglas doesn’t have far to look beyond her Glasgow studio to see her creative vision truly take shape. The creator of Scottish textile company Bluebellgray has her original watercolours digitally printed on natural cloths that serve as the canvasses for an expansive array of home interiors — some of which are produced just beyond her doorstep. “We obviously can’t do it across every product because some product lines you just can’t simply make in the country where you want to make them,” said Douglas, whose company uses ethically approved factories for overseas production. “But from the very beginning, all of the cushions we’ve done in the U.K. market are printed in the U.K. The backing cloth comes from a little mill up the road in Scotland. We sew them in Glasgow, the cushion pads come from a guy in Glasgow. “It’s very much local, and it’s something that’s been really important to me since the beginning of setting up this business, is working with local suppliers and giving people jobs and opportunity. It’s very much part of the ethos of what we do.” Bluebellgray’s support of local producers has extended across the Atlantic as part of a new partnership with Hudson’s Bay. All of the cushions for the retailer are locally sewn, and two of the furniture pieces in the exclusive collection — a tufted headboard with bright pink pin cushions and a colourful accent chair — are also manufactured in Canada. “Everything is circular and I think it’s a great thing to do. And I love that in Canada, we’ve had the opportunity to do that, to make things here to then sell in the Canadian market,” the genial Douglas said during an interview in a downtown Toronto hotel suite awash with her cheerily coloured designs.

“IT’S SOMETHING THAT’S BEEN REALLY IMPORTANT TO ME SINCE THE BEGINNING ... IS WORKING WITH LOCAL SUPPLIERS AND GIVING PEOPLE JOBS AND OPPORTUNITY.” FIONA DOUGLAS Douglas is also commemorating the special Bluebellgray line with the retailer with two exclusive prints: the autumnal-toned Arisaig, named for a village on Scotland’s west coast and Flower Field Meadow, which boasts oversized florals and bright colours. Hudson’s Bay will also feature a selection of Bluebellgray’s other popular designs in duvet sets, piped sheeting and quilts. Douglas has eschewed following the masses or trends and remains committed to her own creative vision. “I never look at trend boards. I never look at what’s coming through because I don’t want to have

I try and keep my inspiration quite pure,” she said. “So the inspiration could be going to see a beautiful art exhibition or a lovely book that I’ve read. “I think that by keeping the focus on my ideas and keeping them natural, it means you’re not swayed by trends. And then the brand remains much more true to the heart and soul of what it’s about.” While Douglas does create abstract designs, her boldly hued florals have been a dis-
tinct brand signature. While some may associate use of blooms with warmer-weather style, Douglas said she sees the beauty of florals in their ability to be incorporated year-round. “There’s nothing better on a cold winter day (than) if you come into your home and it’s full of bright colour and florals. It’s going to make you feel good,” she said. Douglas said individuals shouldn’t shy away from mixing prints in the home — provided they work with
different scales. “You can maybe have a really lovely large-scale print on your bed and then maybe a large-scale print on your cushions as well. And then you have a smaller scale print on the rug or maybe on your wallpaper.” Painting the wall behind the bed in a deep hue can also act like a blank canvas for more colourful prints that may be showcased on bedding, she noted. “If you keep a natural colour palette r unning throughout everything, then
there will be this beautiful co-ordination that comes together,” she said. “That’s the most important thing for getting a coherent look in a room is to have the colours that all work together. “It doesn’t necessarily have to be the same colour. It doesn’t necessarily have to be all shades of blue. “You can choose things that are all in the same colour family or the opposing colour family. “As long as they’re in the same tone then they’ll work in your room.”

EBOLA OUTBREAK
Scientists trace epidemic to first patient LONDON DAILY TELEGRAPH He is called “S1” by scientists. He was two years old, born in a bush village called Meliandou, a collection of mud-walled huts tasselled with leaf frond roofs. Life in Meliandou is hard, but S1 could have been expected to play his part, growing up to work the rice fields in the annual cycle for survival. Or he might have left to try urban life. Instead, he died last December, vomiting, feverish and passing blackened stool, the first fatality in an outbreak of the disease that is already the world’s worst. This status makes him S1, or Serial 1, in the eyes of epidemiologists who published a paper on the outbreak in the New England Journal of Medicine. In line with all other Ebola outbreaks the scientists did not have to look far for S2, the boy’s three-year-old sister who died a few days later, S3, his mother, S4, his grandmother, and so on as the viral infection sped through the community claiming the village nurse, S5, and local midwife, S6, who took the disease out of the village and to her own community. The spread had begun. So far, so like other Ebola outbreaks. But the proximity of Meliandou to international borders (due south into Liberia, southwest into Sierra

Leone) and the nature of those countries — broken by war, hopelessly misgoverned and yet covered by transport routes — has given this outbreak uniquely terrifying characteristics. It is these that make it no exaggeration to say this current outbreak could lead to a
health crisis of continental, even global proportions. And this fear is going to breed like microbes in a petri dish until the special character of this outbreak is finally recognized and addressed. Horrible though that is, the positive thing about Ebola from a public health point of
view is that the virus has to date been difficult to spread. It has not been dispersed through the air, nor transferred by insect vectors such as mosquitoes, nor carried far in water. If a victim’s infected body fluids are avoided by other humans, or neutralized us-
ing agents such as chlorine, the infection chain can be broken. In crude ter ms that is what had happened since 1976 in the few dozen known eruptions of Ebola, which have all happened in and around the Congo River basin. The spread of the
disease has been stopped because either it has wiped out the entire human population, often small and in remote locations, or trained medical personnel, practising barrier nursing techniques, have treated patients safely until they have either died or recovered.
Family says U.S. patient released despite fever EMILY SCHMALL, HOLBROOK MOHR AND NOMAAN MERCHANT THE ASSOCIATED PRESS DALLAS — During his initial visit to an emergency room, the first person to die of Ebola in the United States had a temperature that spiked to 39.4 C — a fever that was flagged with an exclamation point in the hospital’s record-keeping system, his medical records show. Despite telling a nurse that he had recently been in Africa and displaying other symptoms that could indicate Ebola, Thomas Eric Duncan of Liberia underwent a battery of tests and was eventually sent home. Duncan’s family provided his medical records to The Associated Press — more than 1,400 pages in all. They encompass his time in the emergency room, his urgent return to the hospital two days later and chronicle his steep decline as his organs began to fail. Duncan carried the deadly virus with him from West
Africa, though he showed no symptoms when he left for the United States. He arrived in Dallas on Sept. 20 and fell ill several days later. When he first showed up at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, the man complained of abdominal pain, dizziness, a headache and decreased urination. He reported severe pain — rating it an eight on a scale of 10. Doctors gave him CT scans to rule out appendicitis, stroke and numerous other serious ailments. Ultimately, he was prescribed antibiotics and told to take Tylenol, then returned to the apartment where he was staying with a Dallas woman and three other people. In spite of his fever, a physician’s note dated Sept. 26 said Duncan was “negative for fever and chills.” “I have given patient instructions regarding their diagnosis, expectations for the next couple of days, and specific return precautions,” according to the emergency room physician’s note. “The condition of the patient at this time is stable.” After Duncan’s condition

That’s when he was admitted and swiftly put in isolation. The documents also show
that a nurse recorded early in Duncan’s first hospital visit that he recently came to the U.S. from Africa, though he denied having been in contact with anyone sick. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had
alerted hospitals across America to take a travel history for patients with Ebolalike symptoms. According to the records, Duncan was 45. Relatives said he was 42. The discrepancy could not be immedi-
U.S. marines rush to set up treatment facility THE ASSOCIATED PRESS American marines scrambled to add Ebola treatment beds in Liberia on Friday, while the U.S. and Britain readied new disease screenings for passengers arriving at their airports from West Africa. Doctors tried out experimental drugs in a global battle against the deadly sickness. The UN said nations must all work together — and fast — or “the world will have to live with the Ebola virus forever.” The focus was on the three countries where the virus is multiplying out of control — Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. “As long as there is one case of Ebola in any one of these countries, no country is safe from the dangers posed by this deadly virus,” said Anthony Banbury, who heads the new United Nations Mission for Ebola Emergency Response. The death toll in West Africa passed 4,000 for the first time in the World Health
Organization’s count of confirmed and suspected Ebola cases. A guide to developments around the globe:
ON THE GROUND
The federal government is asking Canadians who live in three countries in West Africa where the Ebola virus is raging to consider leaving now. Health Minister Rona Ambrose said the updated travel advisory is aimed at 216 Canadians who live in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. The U.S. military is rushing to set up a 25-bed hospital in Liberia for health workers who catch the disease. Rear Adm. Scott Giberson, the acting U.S. deputy surgeon general, said the facility would be ready within weeks. In addition to the hospital, a vanguard of marines brought aircraft this week that will help ferry construction supplies for 17 treatment units with 100 beds each, to be finished by the end of November.

An Ebola burial team dons protective clothing before collecting the body of a woman in Monrovia, Liberia. The WHO says the Ebola epidemic has now killed more than 4,000 people.
AT BIG AIRPORTS
Passengers travelling to the U.S. from West Africa are to be screened using notouch thermometers. Over the next week, the screenings will expand from New York’s Kennedy Inter national to Newark Liberty, Washington Dulles, Chicago O’Hare and Hartsfield-Jackson in Atlanta. Those airports receive more than 90 per cent of passengers from the three nations. A U.S. citizen who presents
a heightened risk of disease upon arrival at the United States has a legal right to re-enter the country and be safely quarantined, said Lawrence Gostin, a public health law expert at Georgetown University. That same guarantee would not apply to non-U.S. citizens, but giving them immediate treatment might be safer than putting them on a plane back home.
HUNT FOR A CURE
Texas Presbyterian, the
Dallas hospital where Thomas Eric Duncan died, said he became the first Ebola patient to receive the investigative antiviral drug Brincidofovir. In Spain, nursing assistant Teresa Romero was to be treated with the experimental drug ZMapp, which is in extraordinarily short supply worldwide, a spokeswoman for Madrid’s regional health agency said. Meanwhile, a possible Ebola vaccine developed by the U.S. government is being tested on up to 40 medical workers in the West African nation of Mali. An experimental Ebola vaccine that Canada has donated to the WHO will be shipped to Geneva next week, the global health agency said Thursday. If Canada transfers 1,000 vials to the WHO and if 100 doses can be obtained from each vial, the Canadian donation could turn out to be 100,000 doses of vaccine. The studies may show each person will need two doses of vaccine to gain protection.
ately resolved. Hospital spokesman Wendell Watson did not offer any immediate comment but asked for questions to be sent in writing. Doctors who evaluated Duncan did not respond to a message left at their offices. The hospital has repeatedly changed its account of what the medical team knew when it released Duncan from the emergency room early on Sept. 26. A few days later, on Sept. 30, it initially said Duncan did not tell the staff he had been in Africa. On Oct. 1, it said Duncan’s nurse had been aware of the Africa connection but did not share that information with the rest of the medical team. The next day, the hospital blamed a flaw in its electronic health-records systems for not making Duncan’s travel history directly accessible to his doctor. A day later, on Oct. 3, the hospital issued a statement saying Duncan’s travel history had been available to all hospital workers, including doctors, who treated him during his initial visit.
Passenger sent back to U.S. after Ebola joke THE ASSOCIATED PRESS SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — An apparent joke about having Ebola quickly ended a U.S. man’s trip to the Dominican Republic, officials in the Caribbean country said Friday. The man, whose name was not released, was taken off a US Airways flight from Philadelphia by officials and checked for the disease at an infirmary, said Walter Zemialkowski, operations director at Punta Cana Airport. Authorities determined that the man did not have Ebola and that his passport did not show from trips to Africa. They then put him on a flight back to the U.S., Zemialkowski said. The man’s name was not released.

India-Pakistan tensions defy shared Nobel Prize awarded during deadly week of fighting KARTIKAY MEHROTRA BLOOMBERG NEW DELHI — Friday morning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India’s military had shut up Pakistan’s army during the deadliest week of fighting in more than a year. A few hours later, he congratulated citizens from both countries who shared a Nobel Peace Prize. In splitting the award between Indian child rights activist Kailash Satyarthi and Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai, the Nobel committee weighed in on decades of animosity between nuclear-armed neighbours holding one-fifth of the world’s population. Analysts aren’t expecting much to change. “It’s all very well for do-gooder Scandinavian types to try to nudge them together, but it’s not going to mean much,” said Burzine Waghmar, a member of the South Asia Institute at the School of Oriental and

A Pakistani soldier monitors a border area this week, as India and Pakistan traded fire in the disputed region of Kashmir that killed at least 14 people, the deadliest week of fighting in more than a year. African Studies in London. “It’s just symbolic, with protocol gestures.” The award came during a week in which Hindu-majority India and Muslim-dominated Pakistan traded blame for tit-for-tat gunfire that killed at least 14 people, including civilians, in the disputed region of Kashmir. The countries have fought three of their four
wars since partition in 1947 over Kashmir, which is divided between them and claimed in full by both. On Friday Malala said she would like both Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Modi to attend the award ceremony for the peace prize in Oslo on Dec. 10. “We want India and Pakistan to have good relations, and the ten-
sion that is going on is really disappointing,” Yousafzai said. “It’s very important that the countries have peace. This is how they are going to progress,” she said. “The Nobel Committee regards it as an important point for a Hindu and a Muslim, an Indian and a Pakistani, to join in a common struggle for education and against
extremism,” it wrote while declaring the winners of the annual prize in Oslo, Norway. Past recipients included Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, former U.S. secretary of state Henry Kissinger and President Barack Malala Obama. Yousafzai Malala, 17, became the first teenager to win the prize, a recognition of her efforts to combat extremism after Taliban militants shot her in the face. Satyarthi, 60, is a children’s Kailash r i g h t s a c t iv i s t Satyarthi whose organization has rescued more than 80,000 children from bondage, trafficking and exploitative labour. The two countries experienced as many as one million deaths in 1947, when Hindus and Muslims were attacked while trying to cross a new border drawn in the wake of British rule.

Malala’s prize seen as slap at Taliban HAQ NAWAZ KHAN THE WASHINGTON POST MINGORA, Pakistan — No one expected the news from Oslo this time. Last year, supporters of Malala Yousafzai in her native Swat Valley defied possible backlash from Taliban-backed militants and organized events to await word on the Nobel Peace Prize, which went to an organization seeking a ban on chemical weapons. On Friday — just after the second anniversary of the gunshots by Taliban militants that changed her life — word raced through Mingora: The 17-year-old was a cowinner of the prize for her global advocacy for education for women and girls. “I am speechless on awarding Malala with the Nobel,” said Ahmad Shah, 45, an educator and close aide of her father, Ziauddin Yousafzai, who ran a public school. “I am happy that now our Swat will be known by Malala’s Nobel Peace Prize and that is more than everything.” But there is still the shadow of the Pakistani Taliban and its backers in the Swat Valley, a region of stunning beauty and bloody ideological struggles in the tribal areas along the border with Afghanistan. Years of offensives by the Pakistani military have significantly loosened the once-tight grip of the Taliban, but militants have shown some signs of resilience with attacks on political figures and other opponents. Such retaliation was carried out in October 2012 when masked gunmen shot Yousafzai in the head in apparent reprisal for her calls to keep girls’ schools open. Two other girls were wounded in the attack in Mingora. “Before militancy, Swat was known for its beauty and education,” said Shah, who runs a private school in Mingora. “And, thanks God, this award will help the revival of education in Swat. This is a huge victory for not only Swat, but Pakistan.” Shah recalled the comment by a girl student when asked what she wanted to become in future. Her reply: “I want to become Malala Yousafzai to work for education and peace,” said Shah. “This is great news for Swat,’’ added Ayub Hilal, a 35-year-old merchant. “I have been through the militancy and never fled Swat even during the military operation in May 2009,” he said. “But I see this award as a sign of smile on our faces.” Not all a g ree. In the past, some in Mingora have criticized Yousafzai’s worldwide fame, including events such as a 2013 address at the United Nations, as manipulation by the West. Threats have prevented Malala from returning home since her recovery.
