Rework the home office for play Portable tech makes new use of space Ellen Gibson The Associated Press The home office, it seems, is going the way of the fax machine. Interior designers say families are finding more inventive uses for their homes’ extra little rooms — optimistically called “bonus rooms” by real estate agents. With the spread of wireless Internet and portable devices such as tablets, it’s common now to send spreadsheets and emails from any room in the house, not to mention the nearest coffee shop. In fact, among major home-renovation projects, home-office improvements provide the puniest return on the investment when a home is resold, according to Remodeling magazine’s 2013 “cost vs. value” report.

So instead of that dustcollecting desk, many families are seeking creative ways to customize these alcoves as game rooms, dressing rooms, small theatres and more. “I get this question a lot,” says Elizabeth Cb Marsh, an associate interior designer at Jenkins Baer Associates in Baltimore. “Especially in large, new-construction homes, there are these bonus rooms that are just there.” When her clients make over a pre-existing office, she usually recommends trying to preserve any builtin features, such as shelving or cabinetry. If the space is large enough, she says, one option is to create a billiards room. Find a small (2.1-metre) pool table to place in the centre of the room. If there’s a wood counter, retrofit the top with a waterproof material such as stone for an elegant wet bar, and if you have the budget, install plumbing for a small sink. Make sure the 21st century belongs to Saskatchewan

Don’t water down that whisky, chill it

Alan thomarat

CEO and President Canadian Home Builders’ Association – Saskatchewan “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road’ll take you there.” —George Harrison Or, as one often hears the cliche in business circles: People don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan. For the naysayers who don’t feel Saskatchewan will continue to grow, stay tuned. In fact, we sent many of our best and brightest young minds and our entrepreneurial people to our sister province of Alberta. Many have said Alberta wouldn’t be the province it is now without all the help we sent from Saskatchewan. The reasons that so much human and financial capital made Alberta stronger are the same reasons that Saskatchewan had been held back for the last half of the 20th century. They had the people and we didn’t. I had said some months a go that “lessons from Alberta and their ascend a n cy a s a n e c o n o m i c powerhouse, their recent slowdown post 2008, and the renaissance that province recently enjoys may

assist with implementing proactive sustainable development plans that offer solutions that enhance our province’s long-term growth strategy.” It shouldn’t be forgotten that it was the visionary Alberta premier Peter Lougheed who was determined to build a strong province, and he would make Alberta the oil and energy capital of not only Canada but of North America. Through all this economic expansion, though, he never forgot that to drive the economy and sustain the province Alberta needed more people and they needed to stay in Alberta to raise their families. This was a critical component of long-term planning: Securing population growth and stability so that future generations would thus secure the social, economic and community foundations of the province. So maybe there are a few visionaries in Saskatchewan. I think so. The Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce some years ago through its own Action Saskatchewan initiative and its growth strategy set out to change minds and a defeatist mindset, and put the first line in the sand in this century calling for 1.5 million people by 2030. The chamber has worked with our industry to ensure that the housing and development plans are aligned such that any deterrents

to growth are removed. We all must remain vigilant on this issue. Before the Saskatchewan Party government came to power, it laid out plans to build a framework for investment and growth that appreciated the importance of population growth as the underpinning and critical element required for sustainable economic development. Premier Brad Wall, last year, certainly made it clear that he had no intention of heading down a dark road and challenged that we should set our sights nearer term and make sure there were at least 1.2 million people here by 2020. I also put forth this past year that: “Saskatchewan’s business climate continues to improve, but we remain challenged not only by a lack of capacity in fiscal and labour market supply, government regulations and red tape, but also in that we fail to accept that we alone determine whether we can reach our population targets for growth. We alone, collectively, have a hand in putting plans in place, servicing the land and getting ahead of the demand for serviced land and we, alone, control our own future.” All of us are benefiting from the new momentum in the province and those of us who believe in continuous improvement to sustain this momentum all need to make sure there

is nothing we are doing to slow the process. We cannot have one foot on the gas and the other on the brake. There is clearly a small-p provincial mindset prevailing in some communities and re gions that seems bent on adversarial posturing rather than strengthening Team Saskatchewan working on win-win initiatives. This catches the eyes of the interested investors and migrants alike, and in the competitive global environment we can’t take the chance that we would unknowingly act to deter anyone or any business from choosing to make Saskatchewan and our communities and regions the place to work, live and invest. And I have clearly heard the voices of the past, calling the planners and councils delusional or crazy or dreamers. Come on, man! Remember, we are not going back. This is the right direction and every region in the province needs to follow suit. Let’s plan for a great 50 years. Better yet, let’s make sure the 21st century belongs to Saskatchewan. Let’s plan for that.

Alan Thomarat is the president & CEO of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association — Saskatchewan and the Saskatoon & Region Home Builders’ Association and a director on the national board of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association.

If you’re a scotch connoisseur, it’s a tragedy to see ice cubes dilute an expensive single malt or a cocktail. Here’s a way to keep it chilled without losing the intensity. Trudeau, the innovative kitchenware corporation, has released Dice and Diamonds for the holiday season. The polished ceramic pieces (in the shape of dice and diamonds) can be frozen and stand in as ice cubes. “What a shame to dilute a good-quality whisky with melting ice,” said Jessica Harnois, vice-president of Out-of-town Classified Advertisers call toll-free 1-800-667-9999

the Pan American Sommelier Association. “The diamond and dice shapes work well for both men and women.” Also from Trudeau is the King Cube ice tray, which makes two-inch cubes that are perfect cubes and large enough for embedding edible garnishes before freezing. “Some ideas I’ve tried for parties include colourful fruits, edible flowers or fresh herbs. For the guys, I even put in new golf balls, which was a great hit,” Harnois said. Luxury Condos in Windsor Park. 2 bedroom and den options, 1063-1434 sq. ft., ground level garage parking.

Office Alternative spaces Continued from F1 Add bar stools, a high-top cocktail table and a pendant lamp over the pool table. A smaller office can have a second life as a luxe dressing room, according to Marsh. Whether you draw inspiration from Downton Abbey or certain Beverly Hills housewives, the first step is to install a wall of shelving for shoes and clothes. Keep the decor minimalist, she advises, with a neutral paint colour, a pair of sconces, and a tufted ottoman in the centre of the room. Add a floor mirror and a vanity, and accessorize with vintage hat boxes, a dress form or an antique trunk. If the room has windows, be sure to hang light-filtering curtains to protect your clothing. Families with children have even more options for converting an office space. These days, it is common to transform a dull study into a kids’ homework hub, says Pam Ginocchio, co-founder of the children’s design blog Project Nursery. To begin, she recommends giving each kid a workspace: a small metal desk in a fun colour with a clip-on lamp and a comfy swivel chair. Create a comfortable reading nook on the floor with beanbags. Then mount floating shelves from floor to ceiling and display books with the covers facing out to entice young readers. Appoint one wall as a place for scribbling ideas or displaying schoolwork by applying a layer of magnet paint and then chalkboard paint from floor to ceiling. Consider allowing a computer for older kids’ homework, but try to banish video games and other distractions, says Project Nursery cofounder Melissa Fluhr, who stresses the value of a quiet, contemplative space. If contemplative is not

A book wall is part of a kids’ homework hub that can include a reading nook, too. Create a comfortable reading spot on the floor with beanbags. Then mount floating shelves from floor to ceiling and display books with the covers facing out to entice young readers. your family’s speed, Fluhr suggests using the bonus room as an off-off-off-Broadway theatre. For a kid who likes to perform skits, play and choreograph dances, build a basic plywood stage in the corner of the room. Above that riser, hang a rounded shower-curtain rod and a pair of dark, tab-top curtains. Hang costumes and dress-up clothes in a cubby, and store puppets, musical instruments and other props in a toy chest. Finish by hanging a mirror at tyke height so children can watch themselves rehearse, and don’t forget to add a few comfy chairs for

the audience. If your child has another obsession, turn an undersized room into her special hangout. For example, if she is into outer space, turn it into a mini planetarium with a dark-painted ceiling and a night-sky projector. Just be prepared to update the theme in a year or two when your child’s interests inevitably leap to something else. “Having this little bonus room almost gives you the excuse to go wild,” Ginocchio says. “You don’t have to spend a ton of money or think, what’s going to be my return on investment? It’s a chance to have fun.”

Temperatures are getting dangerously close to freezing — in some cases they have already dropped below — and the last thing you want is to turn on your furnace and find it doesn’t work. Newer furnaces have light indicators on them that can tell you if there’s problem. The lights will start to flash differently, depending on the issue. On the furnace itself there should be a sticker that tells you what the different flashes mean. It might be behind a panel, so check your owner’s manual. That way you can tell your HVAC technician that there’s an issue with something specific in the system, and they can bring the right tools and parts when they come to check it out. That can save crucial waiting time in between repairs — something that will definitely matter on a cold winter night. If you haven’t already had your furnace serviced by a licensed HVAC technician, now’s the time. They’ll check all the different components of the furnace and make sure it’s up for the challenge of meeting your winter heating demands. For example, they will check the thermostat, the registers (make sure they’re clean and not blocked by anything), the flue, vents

and fan. And if your furnace is gas, they will check the igniter. Sometimes sediment or dust can accumulate on the igniter, which stops it from working. Some homeowners think they need to replace the whole system when all it needed was a little clean up. A pro will also check the ducts to make sure they’re properly sealed and that there are no air leaks. HVAC pros or an energy auditor can tell you how much air your system is losing, which could be up to 20 per cent. If the ducts are accessible, like in an unfinished basement, they can be sealed with heat-resistant caulking, aluminum or metal foil tape — not duct tape — or the original mechanical seal can be rebuilt. But stopping an air leak isn’t always easy. And often finding it is a challenge. If it’s in the ductwork that’s behind a wall or in the ceiling, the drywall will need to come down. Then it becomes a matter of stopping the air leak and making it look like the repair never happened, which means replacing, repairing and repainting the drywall. Then you keep your furnace in good shape by replacing the air filter. At least once every three months is standard, but every month is better — every two weeks if you’re renovating. You especially want to replace it every month in the cold season because your furnace works harder during these months. It pushes and filters more air, which means the filter gets clogged faster. A clogged filter doesn’t work, and it can

wear out your furnace prematurely. Gas is still king when it comes to forced-air heating systems. But it has its safety issues, like gas leaks. Every level in your home should have a carbon monoxide (CO) detector — there should be one directly outside bedrooms — and you should test them every month. Plus, testing is easy. Every CO detector has a test button. To test the system, hold the test button down for two to five seconds. You should hear a loud beep. If it sounds weak it’s time to change the batteries. Regardless, the batteries need to be changed twice a year. A good time to do it is when we change the clocks back and forward. Some newer homes have CO detectors and smoke alarms that are hardwired directly into the home’s electrical system. But they must have a battery back up, no exceptions. That’s why you need to test your alarms, hardwired or not. Is hiring a pro to check your fur nace worth the time, effort and money? Absolutely. If you don’t have hundreds of dollars just lying around, you might not see it that way, and I get it. But if you think about the money you could be losing every month because of an air leak or because your system is too old or inefficient — or worse, risk a very cold winter — it might help put things in perspective, and make them right. Much like that found in Roman apartments, heated, travertine flooring graces the expansive upstairs living area.

A double-side fireplace on the second level of the Palladino home serves to separate the living area from the curved, open staircase.

The lower-level kitchen is where the Palladino family gathers for meals, reserving the upstairs kitchen for bigger celebrations. shared roots they decided to have something built in their new home that would honour the connection between their families. The glass panel in the basement is found over the bright red stove and reflects the scene outside the windows, where wild grasses growing around the lake sway in the breeze. Other Italian touches, such as toilets suspended from the walls instead of on pedestals, are situated throughout the home. The living room furniture comes from Italy, but was purchased in

The upstairs example adorns the door of the pantry and is infused with meaning. It features a tall, rustic tower that is the signature structure in the central Italian town of Campobasso, where Valeria’s mother and her husband’s parents, were born. Having a single slab of gleaming wood forming the tabletop was important to Valeria. “To me, the table was about unity,” she says. “To me, it’s where we come together.” Extra guests at dinner can be seated at the long, creamand-taupe quartz island, where five comfortable, lowslung Italian bar stools are lined up. If the heart of the home is in the kitchen, the Palladino family enjoys a double dose of love. That’s because they have not one, but two, kitchens, each of which uses bright colours and custom touches to cheerfully beckon friends and family. Two kitchens — one upstairs and one downstairs — is a tradition for many Italians living in Canada, along with front-yard gardens and huge weddings. Although homeowner Valeria Palladino was born in a Rome apartment with a single kitchen, when she and her Edmonton-bor n husband, Nick (whose parents were Italian immigrants) decided to build their dream home, they knew it would feature double dishwashers, stoves and all. “The stuff upstairs lasts longer if you don’t use it,” says Valeria Palladino with a giggle, echoing what Italian-Canadian families have been saying for generations. Both kitchens (and the home’s bathrooms) have a style of their own. The upstairs kitchen is sleek and modern, with custombuilt, apple-g reen glass backsplashes. This kitchen is where the Palladino family entertains, often feeding 20 people or more and seating at least half of them at a handcrafted maple table. The basement is where the nuclear family, including two teenage boys, eats day-to-day. It has a smaller table perfect for four people, and features fire-engine-red Viking appliances and a great view of the outdoors. The Palladino home overlooks Patricia Lake, where bulrushes sway and golden trees reflect the change of season from summer to autumn. Bright and airy, the main floor has threemetre ceilings, covers 195 square metres and is made fo r e n t e r t a i n i n g . O n c e again reflecting a Roman perspective, the floors are cream-coloured travertine, heated in the kitchen and dining areas. “ To u s, i t s p e a k s o f home,” Palladino says of the travertine. “You will find it in any apartment in Rome.” The custom-built maple dining table dominates the main-floor space.
