Beyond red and green Try new colours for the holidays Lisa Evans Postmedia News Red and green may be the trademark colours of the holiday season, but if you want to wow your guests, try experimenting with alternative colour combos. British design icon and television personality Debbie Travis has named berry pink the colour of the season. “This was a hot colour this year for clothes and we know home always follows fashion,” she says. This deep, cheerful pink with a hint of purple is a refreshing twist on the traditional cherry red of the holiday season. Travis chose the colour because it adds a touch of sophistication and fun and goes well with modern decor, complementing dark wood and metals such as sil-
ver and gold, which have risen in home decor popularity in the last couple of years. “I think it’s a really happy colour for the holidays and it’s got that little bit of an edge to it,” she says. Travis has teamed up with Canadian Tire, offering an exclusive line of berry pink holiday decor. She offers her top tips for holiday decorating with this (and other) hues.
1. Break decor rules “The whole point of the holidays is that it’s the one time of the year to throw all those decorating rules out the window and have some fun (with colour and combinations),” says Travis. While berry pink may not be a colour you would choose for your living room walls, she says we should forget trying to match holiday decor with our everyday themes. Ignore the idea that you need to use traditional colours if you have traditional living room furniture or contemporary ones if you have a modern living space.
“Have some fun with holiday decorating.”
2. Switch it up Change your holiday decor each year to create interest in your home, she says, since we tend to have the same people over at Christmas. While you don’t have to throw away all of your decorations and start anew each year, simply adding a new colour of the season and pairing it with holiday staples such as gold, silver and white can create a whole new look that will keep friends and family guessing what your home will look like.
3. Choose a main colour Select one colour as your main thread, then add complementary winter colours such as white or silver. Although Travis says it’s impossible to go overboard with colour during the holiday season, toning it down with a contemporary metal such as gold, silver or a neu-
tral brown tone can make the colour really pop in your space.
4. Experiment Take a twist on the traditional red-and-green colour combination and try something unique, like pairing berry pink with peppermint or lime green to give your decor a more contemporary look.
5. Get organized Before hanging decorations, Travis spreads everything out on the floor to see how ornaments look next to each other. Try incorporating a variety of textures, patterns and materials to create interest such as mixing ribbons in quilted and knitted textures with feathers and ornaments.
6. All the rest Decorating is not just about the tree. It’s important to create a unified look by adding touches of holiday colours throughout all

door or in the window above the kitchen sink — all incorporating your chosen holiday colour — help to create a cohesiveness to your holiday look.

Q: My family and I moved into a new four-bedroom house last year. Because of the initial costs, we haven’t done anything since moving in. We’ve been saving and I’m ready to get started. I’d like to start with my dining room. We love to entertain and I want a transformation. I’ve noticed a lot of high-gloss walls in decor magazines lately and think this is a look I’d like. What do you think of them and is this something you would recommend? Thank you. A: I love, love, love the shiny wall treatments you are drawn to. These walls — shiny enough for you to apply your makeup by — are referred to as lacquered. They bring drama and glamour to any room but work especially well in dining rooms where candlelight and glistening chandeliers reflect on the liquid-like surfaces. True lacquered walls are composed of resin and solvents and must be spray applied. As a fresh coat is applied over a dry one, the resin in the dry coat dissolves, creating a flawless surface with a smooth gleam. However, the setup for spraying, the multiple coats required and the extremely high solvent odour make actual lacquering difficult to commit to. The dining room wall in the photo here is not a true lacquer finish. New York designer Gideon Mendelson (mendelsongroupinc.com) achieved this reflective finish with the application of three coats of Benjamin Moore’s Advance product in a high-gloss finish. Oil-based paints are no longer available for purchase because of the hazardous fumes and limited means of disposal. Mendelson says Advance has the application and perfor-

So, I would stick with a lacquered appearance rather than the real thing. Doing all the prep work required for a glimmering surface is the key to its success. Your walls need to be in pristine condition to achieve the look you see in magazines. With a flashlight held parallel to the wall, comb every inch of your walls to find dents or nail holes that need to be filled. If the walls are in really rough shape, clean them up with a skim coat of drywall mud (then sand well!) to create a smooth painting surface. From your email, I assume
your house is a new-build; if so, it’s wise to wait for it to settle before attempting lacquerlike walls. In the first year after a new build, hairline cracks appear in the drywall as the house settles through seasonal fluctuations in humidity and temperature, and you do not want this happening to your beautiful new walls. As you bought your house last year, I’m hoping any imperfections have already appeared and can be repaired. To obtain the smoothest finish possible, you will ideally spray the paint on because even the finest sponge rollers will leave a slightly dimpled appearance. Lightly sand between each coat of paint (expect to do at least three coats) to smoothe out any bumps. If you’re doing this project yourself, you may choose to
use a roller and up the sanding component. And if you want even more shine, you can finish with a coat of high-gloss, water-based clear varnish. Lacquered walls look the most dramatic in dark or bold colours. I’ve seen great success with navy, red and green. Benjamin Moore’s Bella Blue is the colour used in the photo above; I’m drawn to it because it reminds me of the Caribbean ocean. I wouldn’t go to the trouble of lacquering unless you’re prepared to make a statement with colour — in my opinion, there’s no sense giving a beige wall that treatment. Even though lacquering is a lot more work than basic painting, the decorative payoff is so much greater.

who hope for opportunity and a better life. A case in point is our work on immigration, and especially our Skill Build Training Services and Bridges & Foundations Career Development Corp.’s work-based training and placement record of job creation and community building. Due in part to the program’s support, nearly 500 aboriginal participants earned good incomes rather than depending on social programs that offered little prospect for escaping poverty and poor living conditions. Given the level of participation in the economy on the part of our First Nations workforce there is clearly some room for continuous improvement. Better still, with willing partners already at the table from governments, First Nations and industry, the time couldn’t be better for industry to lead in finding real solutions to job creation. There are so many opportunities in many industries in Saskatchewan, and industry has the market intelligence to direct the training and development required to give an eager workforce the skills needed to fill the many vacant jobs in Saskatchewan. There is no single solution that will address the high level of job vacancies in Saskatchewan. Certainly we must concentrate on success among the population of new Canadians, ex-pats who have returned here and the many Canadians now coming here to share in the promise of
CEO and President Canadian Home Builders’ Association — Saskatchewan It has become clear that we might be leaving some opportunity behind as there is continued posturing over the Canada Jobs Grant initiative and pushback from some ministers in some provinces. Fortunately, the government of Saskatchewan has not, and does not, take such adversarial positions when it comes to working with partners to encourage growth and job creation in this province. It seems to be the right time to work on another “made in Saskatchewan” labour market development program to help deal with the largest number of job vacancies among the provinces. The government of Canada may have just enough flexibility in its jobs grant program for the province to address what is becoming chronic “gravel in the gears” of this otherwise robust economic engine called Saskatchewan. We need to continue to work together to assess need, identify and address priorities, and review our goals and programs so that we continue to realize the outcomes that spread benefits and raise quality of life. All of this will make a difference for those

It seems to me that needs in Saskatchewan can be met through a partnership opportunity with the government of Canada through the Canada Jobs Grant program. Saskatchewan. Our governments at all levels are working together now more than ever creating sustainable partnerships that make us better able to solve any problems or challenges we might experience from growth. We need to get good at this because this growth and this level of economic activity will not abate any time soon, and for some of us not in our lifetimes. We must not rest or become complacent, or feel we have accomplished enough to this point. Yes, we have accomplished much and we are on the right track, but we must continue to be action- and outcomesoriented. We have and must continue to lead this province to hold a position as a prominent player on the global stage for the long term. That is good for Saskatchewan, and good for Canada. Saskatchewan has wealth the world wants and this wealth of jobs and contributions to economic vitality are being shared with Canadians all across the country, as we are a “have” province with abundant opportunity to share with many. We have been encouraging gover nments to work with us on a better way for new Canadians to enjoy the quality of life in Canada, to always have an open door for our First Nations, Metis and all aboriginals to participate fully in our prosperity, and also to offer another chance for fellow Canadians who have lost jobs and hope to build

flooring
Engineered hardwood won’t shrink or expand MIKE HOLMES Make it Right
When it comes to hardwood flooring, there’s solid hardwood and engineered hardwood. People are always asking me which one is better, but both have their pros and cons. Solid hardwood floors are just that — they’re made from solid wood. Each board of solid hardwood flooring is made from a single piece of hardwood that’s about ¾ inch thick. Because it’s so thick it can be sanded down and refinished for however long the flooring is in the house. But the main problem with solid hardwood is that it shrinks and expands depending on the humidity
in your home. In the winter when it’s drier, hardwood floors will shrink. When there’s more moisture in the air, like in the spring or summer, hardwood expands. Whoever installs solid hardwood floors must have enough experience to leave the right amount of space for hardwood’s natural expansion and contraction. The individual boards can’t be too tight or too loose. If they’re too tight your floor will buckle. If it’s too loose the gaps between the boards will get too wide in the winter. Then there’s engineered hardwood flooring. It’s made of layers of wood, bonded together with adhesives under intense heat and pressure. Because of this process, engineered hardwood flooring isn’t affected by humidity as much as hardwood. It doesn’t shrink or expand, which makes it resistant to warping and cupping. And for that same reason it’s considered very strong and
stable. It can also be sanded and refinished — not as much as hardwood, but a few times over a couple decades is fine, depending on the quality. But another reason why people love engineered hardwood is its application. Unlike solid hardwood, engineered hardwood can go over concrete under the right conditions, like in a condo. And some people say it can also be installed below grade too, like in a basement. But there is some debate about that. H a rdwo o d a n d w at e r don’t mix. If they do there is the potential for mould and water damage. What does that mean for you? Possibly ripping up your new floors and replacing them. That’s why we never put hardwood in areas where the potential for moisture is high, such as in bathrooms, laundry rooms, kitchens and even basements. Should we follow the same
guidelines for engineered hardwood? It depends on how much you’re willing to risk. I would never install it in a bathroom or laundry room, but when we talk about kitchens and basements things aren’t so black and white. I’ve spoken to a lot of professionals and many of them say that engineered hardwood in the kitchen is fine. As far as wear and tear goes, it can get scratched or dented by falling objects or utensils. But if we’re talking about potential water damage and mould, as long as you wipe up any spills quickly you don’t need to worry. They also say that engineered hardwood can handle moisture levels found on most basement concrete floors, usually no more than four per cent. Some engineered hardwood boards allow for air movement between the flooring and the foundation, so if there is
any moisture it can dry out. But the basement must be watertight. Bottom line: if enough water gets into the boards you will run into the same issues you have with solid hardwood. That’s why you never wet mop engineered hardwood floors — or any hardwood floor for that matter. Can engineered hardwood be installed in kitchens and basements? Yes. Many pros do this. But for most people, engineered hardwood flooring is expensive — it can be more expensive than hardwood. Then there’s the issue of off-gassing. All engineered and manufactured wood products are made with adhesives and resins, and most of those will off-gas, including plywood, OSB (oriented strand board), laminated beams, MDF (medium-density fibreboard) and particleboard. But when it comes to off-
gassing and engineered hardwood floors, the issue isn’t the adhesives mixed into the wood — it’s the toxins in the stains and topcoat. Some manufacturers do a really good job of making sure their engineered hardwood does not off-gas, including the topcoat and finish. But homeowners should make sure for themselves. Contact the manufacturer and ask about their green policies. I love engineered hardwood, but as with everything else, you need to do your homework. Talk to the pros, ask the right questions and always follow manufacturers’ instructions on proper installation and maintenance. Catch Mike Holmes on Holmes Makes It Right, Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on HGTV. Evergreen boughs add winter colour Rob Sproule For Postmedia News As Canadians cloister together in our centrally heated homes through winter, our thoughts drift to the warming sunlight and thawing breezes of May. We do adore our gardens, but at this time of year it can seem that the season for container gardening will never return. Have no fear. You can make a container garden that stays green through the snow, and cheat winter in the process.
In the past decade, evergreen boughs have sprang u p a ro u n d f ro n t d o o r s across North America, replacing the darling buds of May. It’s an ideal way to use your summer containers for another season. Many of us already get two “turns” by replacing spring pansies and marigolds with fall mums and kale. Fresh greens have exploded in winter popularity, offering cold-climate gardeners an outdoor creative outlet over the holidays. Large garden centres
offer dozens of varieties of boughs, not to mention branches, cones and countless accessories to stoke your imagination. Look to cedar, pine and fir as the foundation of your outdoor creation. Western red cedar — playful, fragrant with a smooth texture — is one of my favourites. Silver fir is also excellent; the undersides of the needles have a subtle silver tinge that glimmers under porch lights. A parade of coloured accents will add visual pizzazz. Ilex, or winterberry, boasts stems of clustered
red berries that catch the eye. Avoid Ilex with shrivelled berries or if a considerable amount of berries fall off when you handle the stem. Stems such as curly willow, dogwood or even birch add a bold vertical appeal. Curly willow is my favourite, as the twisted stems bring a jester’s twist to the overall silhouette. Choose dogwood or birch if you prefer straight lines. A great outdoor container starts with healthy ingredients. Evergreen boughs are essentially cut flowers, so get them fresh.
Megan Hahn/Postmedia News
Curly willow playfully rises up from between long cedar fronds and cones. A wide red ribbon and berry clusters set off the arrangement.

The house is surrounded by 30-acres of wilderness and overlooks a broad expanse of marshland and waterfowl habitat. Owner David Jackson excavated the large pond which attracts all kinds of birds.
Simple white slipcovers are easy to toss in the laundry, says Sophia Jackson, who loves the peaceful atmosphere, wood floors, trim and stone wall of the library, at right. like stars at night. “It has a wonderful atmosphere. He always thinks in many dimensions, and has created such a warm and welcoming space.” Jackson discovered the property one frosty Christmas Day when he took his dog for a walk. “I walked across this field and made the owners an offer … and, boom, they took it. So here we are.”
The powder room’s mossy green wall displays mementos including a letter and photo from Glenn Close, who collects David Jackson’s art.

David Jackson has been a threedimensional artist for more than three decades, so it’s no surprise that he sat down one Sunday afternoon and designed his Salt Spring Island, B.C., house in three hours. What is perhaps extraordinary, however, is that in those few hours he created an original, rustic-modern home that is so inviting, people entering it seem to shed their cares, as well as their coats at the door. “I didn’t change a thing from the original plan,” said a beaming Jackson, who grew up in Wales. “And all the wood for construction came off the property. These were the last two trees we took down,” he added, slapping a large trunk, which soars to the living room ceiling and supports one of several trusses. Huge fir floor planks, irregularly sized and up to 14-inches wide, were given a unique look when he spaced them widely apart and filled the gap with grout. “It was an experiment,” he said of the diagonal pattern. Jackson, a renowned bird and wildlife sculptor since 1978, was drawn to the pristine wilderness that surrounds the house, as well as the wetland habitat. “The water view is my inspiration. It was very dense bush when I bought the place. It took two lumberjacks and me three months to clear it by hand.” The 3,000-square-foot home’s design is simple. It has 25-foot ceilings, lots of windows, wood, beams, trusses and a big promenade deck for flowerpots in the summer. “I wanted a West Coast home,” Jackson said. “And I like vaulted ceilings, openness, volume.” There are no nail heads in the deck, because he didn’t want any marks. It was built with invisible screws from underneath and has been allowed to weather naturally. “The only trouble with that is I have to scrub it down every spring, because of moss and algae.” The roof is metal, exterior walls are covered in clear cedar shingles and a 42-foot wide stairway offers an unobstructed view from the raised kitchen, right through the living room and out to nature. “I think it’s grand but not ostentatious,” he said with a laugh, adding he made it wide so he wouldn’t need railings in front of the main room. “When I built the house, I was a bachelor, so there is just one bed-

room with a loft above,” which has a secret entrance through the master closet. There is no bathtub because he is on a well and didn’t want to waste water. While excavating for the house, he also dug a huge pond below his front steps and had 75 truckloads of peat taken out and moved to the side to create a garden. The house, art studio and garden take up about an acre and the rest is wild and brambly. His wife, Sophia, has helped create a cutting garden behind a deerproof fence and other colourful beds, but most of the property has been left as bird habitat. They go through six pounds of birdseed every day in the winter, and the property is a haven for birds that swoop down for a bath in the pond. The house is filled with art. One of the most striking pieces is a massive carved mantle by Jackson for the living room. He had asked a friend at the forestry company MacMillan-Bloedel to see if he could find him a nice chunk of yellow cedar. “I thought I was getting an 18-inch-long piece, but it turned out to be a 10-by-12-inch beam that was 24 feet long,” Jackson said. It’s now carved with otters, salmon, loons, frogs and kelp. Like an artist’s canvas, the whole house is white and Jackson applies his creativity to everything he does. “I like to try a little bit of everything now. I mess around with clay, ceramics, furniture, sculpture and soapstone. I’m at an age where I am not as aggressive as I once was, where I can wander into new areas and not be embarrassed by it.” “David is incredibly talented, and has a wonderful sense of space, proportion, texture and colour,” said Sophia Jackson. “This house is so beautiful, especially the den in the evening, and the kitchen where he has put little lights in the glass ceiling that look

Cob construction makes a comeback VICTORIA — Living in a cob house isn’t something homeowners do to blend with the neighbourhood and Patrick Hennebery knows this firsthand. He lived in a cob house on Mayne Island, one of the Gulf Islands north of Victoria, for 10 years. Hennebery is the owner of Cobworks and routinely teaches workshops and internships, including a fourmonth course he’s currently conducting at Shawnigan Lake’s O.U.R. Ecovillage on Vancouver Island. “This house we’re building at the Ecovillage is, I think, my 24th home,” said Hennebery. “I’ve also built various small buildings, fireplaces, ovens, garden walls and benches.” Cob is an ancient building material that has been used in some of the oldest manmade structures. Using clay, sand, straw and water, Hennebery builds eco-friendly homes featuring other recycled and found materials, which helps keep the overall cost of construction down. “ O n a c o nv e n t i o n a l framed house the labour is about half the cost and the materials are half,” he said. “With a cob house the materials are way less, but the labour is still there. “Unlike a conventional house where you need a carpenter, with a cob house a lot of the labour can be learned by the owner in a workshop. We encourage people to bring as much to the project as they can.” Cob construction has recently increased in popularity on the West Coast, and one reason people are choosing cob is the way the walls
retain heat, helping to keep heating and insulation costs down. But elsewhere in Canada, Hennebery said those interested in building with cob would have to include natural building materials like straw bales to help with insulation. “I’m working on designing some small houses that would be good anywhere in Canada,” he said. “You get the straw bales, which are good insulation, and cob, which has thermal mass. I want to design some houses where you have straw bale with a foot (30.5 centimetres) of cob inside. That way, no matter where, you can include the heating properties of both construction materials.” Even though Hennebery suggests cob construction is best suited to the West Coast’s climate, Gena Arthur, owner of Halifax’s Eco Developments, is working on building her first cob house. Arthur founded Eco Developments in 2009 after travelling to Vancouver Island to learn about building with cob. “I started off very small building cob ovens,” said Arthur. “I went on to build the first community oven in Nova Scotia, which is the Park Avenue Community Oven which is built on the Dartmouth Commons.” But building with cob on Canada’s East Coast is different than on the West Coast, and one considerable difference is in the foundation. The seismic activity in and around British Columbia means there are specifications around the foundation that aren’t present in the building standards in Nova Scotia. “I was able to obtain a permit to do a dry stacked stone foundation because

A volunteer walks by the healing centre at O.U.R. Ecovillage in Shawnigan Lake, B.C. we don’t have any seismic activity here,” said Arthur. “That was pretty major because we did the very first permitted foundation.” The thickness of the cob walls is also much different in Nova Scotia. According to Arthur, the walls for her home will be nearly a metre thick, unlike the 46-centimetre-thick walls Hennebery builds. Arthur will be putting the walls and roof on her home in the next three weeks with the help of an apprentice from Providence, R.I., and nearly 60 interested volunteers. “The interest from the public has been phenomenal,” she said. “We have hundreds of people that are waiting to come and see our project, and we’ve just been holding off because it isn’t much right now.”

Chimney repointing pointers Shell Busey For Postmedia News There are a few key things homeowners need to think about when preparing to repair their brick or cinderblock chimneys. Chimneys are being converted to the metal-insulated type of chimneys, rather than the old flue-liner type with solid brick/block chimney chases. The reason is the devices used in chimneys are also changing. I am seeing fewer traditional wood-burning fireplaces and more controlled-burning appliances in fireplaces, such as heatilators, wood-pellet fireplaces or natural gas or propane fireplaces, which require a different type of insert to properly exhaust gases created when fuel is burned. The change in how we use fireplaces is also affecting
how they age. Let’s deal with a home that has a brick or cinder-block chimney. You will notice a line between the bricks or cinderblocks; this is the mortar line. Brick mortar lines can deteriorate over time as they are exposed to the elements. If the mortar lines deteriorate, they will allow in moisture. This can freeze during winter and cause further damage to the chimney. The repair for this is called repointing. Before repointing the exterior of your chimney, you must first make an effort to remove as much of the loose mortar as possible using a small pointed trowel. Once you have removed the loose mortar, wash the mortar lines with an all-purpose cleaner. This will give you a clean surface to work with. Any dirt, algae or other residue can interfere with the bonding process. Purchase a multi-purpose
adhesive such as Weldbond or a pre-mixed concrete adhesive. Brush the adhesive into the mortar lines you are going to repoint, meaning where you are going to put new mortar to replace the old mortar you have scraped out. The adhesive will act as a bonding agent for the new mortar to adhere to. Once you’ve properly prepared the surface, get a bag of mortar mix or mortar pre-mixed cement. You have already added the adhesive where the loose material was scraped away. There is no requirement to add any more adhesive to the mortar mix. If you feel better having adhesive in the mortar mix as well, you can add more of the adhesive to the mortar mix before mixing. Add a 1/2 cup (125 mL) of adhesive to two shovels of mortar mix. The consistency should be such that when you grab a handful of this mix,
you are able to squeeze it and it will come out between your fingers. Now you’re ready to place the mortar. Do not do this in the direct sunlight or heat. You will place the mortar using a pointing tool. This tool looks like a Z and has two sides to it: one side is 3/8 inch (9.5 mm) and the other side is 1/2 inch (1.2 mm). Using a piece of plywood, put a small quantity of mortar on the plywood and push the mortar off of the plywood using the pointing tool into the grove where the mortar is to go. Once you’ve done the repairs, wait a month to seal the surface. Seal using a spray bottle filled with an acrylic concrete sealer. Start sealing the brick/cinder block and mortar surfaces at the bottom, working your way to the top of the chimney. For more home-improvement information, go to AskShell.com

Q: Our great room is two storeys high and open to the third floor, and the kitchen area has 10-foot ceilings. From the great room looking up above the kitchen is a wall that’s approximately nine feet high. What can we do with this massive white wall above the kitchen that soars to the third floor? My partner says we should hang artwork but I say art hung that high will look ridiculous. What say you? A: I’m sorry to disappoint you, but I actually think hanging artwork on this high plane is what you should do. The photo I am providing
here to demonstrate the point is from Miami interior design firm DKOR Interiors (dkorinteriors.com). To break up the massive white wall and make the space more visually interesting, the designer chose a modern triptych, Blue Movement by Antillion. For you to achieve this goal, remember scale and proportion. It’s hard to find a single piece of art to properly fill a wall this size so use either a diptych or triptych. The canvases shown above each measure 48-by-48 inches, and hang so that the bottom of each lines up with the floor level beside (to the right in the picture). Just remember whatever you hang must not look minuscule or it will get lost on the wall.
Often oversized paintings tend to be modern in theme, so if this goes against your decorating style you may wish to hang a large tapestry, quilt or rug, or perhaps a collection of decorative masks from your travels could fill the wall? Recently I’ve noticed beautiful woven baskets at various stores, which, hung properly, could look like a curated collection from around the world. Your Decorator’s White walls really are the perfect paint colour to showcase art of any kind. Your art has to be large enough to be identifiable from the living room. You don’t want your guests requesting binoculars to get a close-up Send your design question to askjeffreyfisher@gmail.com.
