Multi-purpose draperies Add privacy, coziness and style to room Samantha Pynn Postmedia News Q: When we first moved into our Victorian-style home, I left the windows bare in our family room. Now I feel like our house looks unfinished. I’m sure the neighbours are talking, and my friends and in-laws are continually at me over the lack of privacy. Our style is relaxed, though I’d like something that looks more dressed up. I’ve been shopping, but all the choices make me dizzy. One salesperson told me that luxury curtains always have a large puddle, which looks off to me. A: I hear your frustration and confusion. Don’t worry about your neighbours, inlaws or friends, and try to understand that they mean well. This goes for the salesperson too, because curtains

that puddle, meaning the fabric spills onto the floor, are not for everyone. Design and decor is personal. People get defensive and critical. I’ve seen people turn red with rage over what they think is right. Fortunately, the world doesn’t move to the beat of just one drum. You tried living without window treatments, but you changed your mind. That’s A-OK.

I have a particular affinity for these drapes because they’re reversible. The drapes are an aubergine velvet on one side, and on the other, a

violet sateen. Plus, I like seeing a hint of the violet fabric on the inside of the velvet. “In Canada, it’s nice to have the coziness of draperies,” says Cobi Ladner of Cobistyle (cobistyle.com). In the winter, you can bring warmth to your living room with the velvet side, and in the summer, you can switch to the sateen. The panels come in several colours and are available from 96 to 108 inches (2.4 to 2.7 metres) long, but if your ceilings are higher than nine feet, you can also order a custom size. Because your home has classic style, rod-and-ring or rod-and-pocket drapes will work best. In the photo, the header (top of the drapery panel) is a simple rodand-pocket style. Hospital tracks work best in condos or modern-styled homes. If you have a bay window and wish to hang four panels, you can connect the drapery rods with elbow joints for a seamless look. The drapery tie-back in the photo looks like a small doorknob and is a much cleaner way to hold back the panel

than with fabric ties. When it comes to length, you definitely want your curtains to touch the floor. For a clean look, install your drapery so that it is just grazing or kissing the floor. I like when curtains “break” at least one to two inches (2.5 to 5 centimetres) on the floor. As far as puddles go, anywhere between three and eight inches (7.6 and 20 cm) works well in casual rooms. I used to be a fan of a giant puddle, but these days I find that 14- to 20-inch (35.6- to 51-cm) puddles look fussy unless the room is stately or formal. And if you have pets, beware of ball-gown-esque puddles. In my old house, my cat Chocolate would curl up and make a nest in the puddle of my off-white silk drapery. Any time I tried to vacuum her brown fur from the silk, I ended up with half the panel stuck down the vacuum hose. In other words, three inches (7.6 cm, as in the photo) may just do the trick. Don’t forget the garage something called rolling codes. The newer units make it almost impossible for a burglar to use a code grabber to capture the frequency to gain entry. A code grabber is a scanner that picks up the frequency code when homeowners either enter or exit their overhead garage door with a remote-control device. What is the largest and most expensive door in your home? Here’s a clue; it averages between 10 and 20 feet in width. Yes, you guessed it, it’s your garage door. Amazingly, most homeowners don’t think of an overhead garage door as a door to their home. But, in fact, the garage door is not only the largest entry to your home but one of the most vulnerable. When I do security checks on homes and point out the importance of securing the garage, homeowners often scoff at my recommendation. I have to remind them the garage is as much a part of their house as the kitchen or bathrooms. And don’t forget window coverings for garage windows. Homeowners often spend time and money on expensive window coverings for all but the garage windows, which are usually left uncovered. Do you have an alarm system in your home? If so, I hope you didn’t forget to alarm the garage. Alarm installers often cut costs by eliminating contacts on the garage windows and doors. If there’s motion detection in the garage, you can be assured nobody will be entering your garage with the help of a stolen remote door opener or garage door entry code without the homeowners knowing about it. It’s usually recommended to have a separate alarm control for the garage; that way you can arm the system without affecting the rest of your home. If you have alarm stickers to place around your home, don’t forget to place them on the front of your overhead door as well as the

outside main door leading into the garage. And if you have windows in your overhead garage door, make sure you add a reflective security film that will make it hard for would-be burglars to see into the garage. You should also place all tools that could aid in a break-in behind lock and key. Once burglars break into your garage, they could grab your tools and work all night behind closed doors to help gain entry into the rest of your home. Most overhead garage doors today have a motorized garage-door opener. If you have an older model with dip switches at the top of the unit, you may want to replace it with the newer version that has

A few object lessons in heritage restorations Key is to respond to unexpected Megan Cole The Canadian Press VICTORIA — As new skyscrapers are erected in cities across Canada, a number of building owners and developers are working to maintain heritage buildings that have stood for centuries. Victoria architect Christine Lintott has been involved with heritage restoration since 1992 when she worked on the refurbishment of St. Ann’s Academy in Victoria. Despite the costs of restoring heritage buildings, Lintott said there is a lot of value of place in the community that fuels the incentive to maintain them. “Communities place a lot of value on these spaces,” said Lintott. “It’s community memory and memory of place, and these buildings have a lot of value in the eyes of the community.” Communities are often included in the progress of the development and construction of the buildings and, according to Lintott, if there is a heritage aspect, residents will often be vocal and advocate for some kind of adaptive reuse or at least

The importance of Victoria’s heritage is also recognized by the city, and to help offset the costs of re-

furbishing the buildings it has set up a tax incentive program. “In the city of Victoria there is a huge incentive particularly in Old Town to refurbish old buildings,” said Lintott. “Economically there is very little value in retaining an old structure, particularly when you’re trying to meet current seismic codes. The economics don’t

work unless you incentivize it, and the city of Victoria recognizes that and recognizes the value of their community.” Even though heritage buildings are important to the cities they are found in, Victoria architect Peter de Hoog said there are significant challenges. De Hoog’s firm is working on the restoration of the New England building on

downtown Victoria’s Government Street. Despite being built in 1894 as a hotel, de Hoog said the New England was in relatively good condition. But despite its state, de Hoog said there were several challenges. “It is kind of interesting inside because all the floor levels are at different heights,” said de Hoog about the New England.

“It’s also a building that has one side that faces on to Government Street and the other side faces on to an alley. “The other two sides are property lines with no options for windows. What we’ve done is make it into a little apartment building, and getting a plan working where each apartment can get a window is a challenge.” In addition to these difficulties, de Hoog said there are a lot of unknowns involved in restoring a heritage building. Even though architects and contractors come up with plans for their projects, de Hoog said there are a lot of decisions made at the last minute because of surprises that can emerge in stripping the building’s interior. “It is really important when you’re working on one of these buildings that you are working with a team of highly specialized contractors and subcontractors who are keen to go in and do this work,” he said. “You have to be able to respond to the unexpected at any time. We are sort of through that now, but at the beginning there seemed to be surprises every time we opened a wall. You need to be very flexible and responsive,” he said. “They are fun projects and it is wonderful when they are all refinished.”

Use wood filler to smoothe scratches on coffee table Reena Nerbas For Postmedia News Q: I own a large coffee table made of wood. The table is full of scratches and I can’t afford to purchase a new table. Is there any way to hold onto my table without dishing out a wad of cash? A: Option number 1: Fill in the scratches with a wood filler pencil or crayon — which are specifically designed to hide scratches — colour-matched to your table. Option number 2: Wipe a rag with matching stain over the wood to hide scratches. Have a piece of smoked glass cut and smoothed to fit the wood. Glass cutters often include rubber feet for each corner so the glass can’t slide out of position. The glass will hide the scratches. Option number 3: Have a piece of wood cut to fit the size of the table, cover the wood with fabric, securing it with a staple gun, and place it over the table. Option number 4: Sand and re-stain the table. Q: I have an old 1930s cabinet that is highly polished. My husband put a bottle of

rum on top of it and it left a stain (it looks like some of the finish was eaten away). I’ve tried furniture polish and it didn’t help. I don’t want to risk refinishing it as it would be a massive job and I think it’s veneer on top. Can you help? A: The good news is you might be able to hide the damage with a dab of matching crayon, paint or stain (depending on the wood). The not-so-good news is that it sounds as though the alcohol stripped the finish and therefore the stain cannot be removed unless you sand and refinish. Q: I have a side-by-side fridge/freezer. While I was cleaning it out I took off the tempered glass on the top crisper drawer, and on turning it over, noticed it was very stained — mostly light brown spots, but also some black. How do I get rid of the stain? I was washing the glass in warm water and dish soap; tried a bit of borax and then soaked a paper towel with vinegar and laid it on for a few minutes, all with minimal results. Using significant elbow grease, I did manage to

three pieces inside of the last pillow case and fold it in half. Now you have a neat bundle that stays together. When you want that set of linens, just pull down one pillow case and they are all inside waiting for use. Or, lay sheets between the box spring and the mattress, or put them in an empty suitcase. Another option is to fold sheets over a hanger and hang them in the closet.

Exercise due diligence to avoid renovation problems Alan thomarat

With winter and the cold weather upon us, the focus tends to shift from outdoors to indoors. And if you’re considering putting some time and TLC into your home, then I need to put out a warning: If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Already builders and contractors are facing more work ahead than most of them can handle. This frenzy can make it challenging to find a builder or renovator; the best ones always seem to be booked well in advance. This isn’t just for construction, electrical or plumbing trades, but you should also be wary of the smooth pitches from unknown sources selling renovation services, alarm systems or other home services. Do your homework, avoid cash deals and check references. Call the Better Business Bureau, or the home builders’ association in your area, and above all get a contract you’re satisfied with. There are other risks you should consider when you embark on any home renovation endeavour. When you hire someone to repair or renovate your home, or even if you get involved in the building of your new home, make sure you know what

you are getting into. Homeowners who take a handson role in directing projects at home may unknowingly cross the line between being a customer and being a contractor. This is particularly relevant if you do some of the work yourself, while hiring workers to complete other parts of your project. If you act as the prime or general contractor on your project, you will be responsible for ensuring that all health and safety regulations are being followed and that

If you fail to do this, you may be financially and legally responsible in the event of an accident on your property. Laws are changing in Saskatchewan and fines are rising for safety violations. Before you start a project, do your homework. Provincial labour laws, health and safety regulations and the National Building Code set out standards that apply to all residential construction projects. Health and safety regulations apply any time workers are hired to carry out construction work. Whoever is in charge of the work (the prime or general contractor) is responsible for making sure all regulations are fol-

ten contract in place between the homeowner and those being hired. In order to avoid potential consequences, homeowners need to make sure they understand the rules in Saskatchewan and in their local municipality before any work begins. The best approach is to contact the Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety, Occupational Health and Safety, the Workers’ Compensation Board office or your municipal building standards office. Explain what you are planning and ask what you need to do to ensure you will not be held responsible in the event of a workplace accident or other incidents on your property. You also should discuss these matters with your insurance broker to be certain your

insurance remains in effect during any construction. Are you dealing with a professional? The best way to reduce the risks related to construction accidents or other liability issues is to sign a written contract with a professional builder or renovator that complies with all health and safety regulations and that provides workplace safety training for employees. Informal hiring practices, particularly handshake deals with contractors who only work for cash, can too easily end up being a financial disaster for the homeowner. Cash contractors definitely are not professionals and are most likely breaking the law. Protect your property, protect your investment and protect yourself and your family. It makes great sense to have a plan: Consult a lawyer and your insurance broker while reviewing contracts. Taking more time now may save a lifetime of financial burden and stress. We’ve said all these things before, but it seems we always read about someone else getting scammed, losing thousands of hard-earned dollars, getting a bad renovation or wondering where the elusive contractor ended up. The lesson still is: Do your due diligence ahead of the project and you will be the winner at the end, and certainly worry free and happy with the outcome. Baby-proofing means safety is paramount

Spring is the high season for babies, so a lot of parents are starting to prepare the baby’s room now. We usually remember the regular stuff, like covering electrical outlets and installing safety gates around the house. But here are a few extra points to keep in mind. Windows: Windows are a bigger job than just a fresh coat of paint. If you live in a noisy neighbourhood, in the middle of the city or if there’s construction happening on your street, noise reduction is worth looking into. Most new parents want to cut down the noise in nursery rooms so the baby — and parents — can sleep more soundly. Dif ferent glass packages — such as thicker glass and triple glazing — can make windows more soundproof. Another concern is safety. You can get internal mini blinds — windows with blinds built into them — so they won’t get dusty. Because they’re cordless — they work on magnets — there’s no choking hazard. Paint: More homeowners are pushing for no-VOC or VOC-free paint. VOC stands for volatile organic compound. But we have to be careful about these kinds of labels because sometimes it’s just clever marketing. Just because a paint has no VOCs that doesn’t necessarily make it safe. Some homeowners even think because the label indicates there are no VOCs that they can paint with kids in the room, or with the windows

closed, or without wearing safety gear. Not the case. And even if the label on the paint indicates it’s VOCfree, the pigment added to the paint can contain VOCs. Usually the darker the pigment the more VOCs there are, so lighter colours — especially white — are safer. If you’re set on getting a noVOC paint, make sure any pigment added is also VOCfree. Bottom line: when it comes to paint, use your common sense. I don’t care if the label indicates no VOC, low-VOC or 100 per cent VOC-free — follow the same precautions you would with any other paint product: Properly ventilate the room, keeping the windows open (if there are any) and use fans. Seal the area from the rest of the house, wear a disposable respirator if you are painting the room yourself, and let the paint dry for at least a week before moving the baby in. Indoor air: Everyone worries about the air outside, but the air inside your home can be two to five times more polluted — sometimes even 100 times more polluted! Babies and small children are especially vulnerable to indoor pollutants, such as dust, mould and bacteria. In addition to a regular furnace filter — which you should be changing every month during winter — I also recommend installing a HEPA, or high-efficiency particulate air, filter that’s installed next to your furnace. There are so many shapes and sizes; I am not sure how to pick the perfect rug for our family room. Do we get one that just goes under the coffee table? Or should it cover the area under all the furniture? A: Aside from your personal preference, your rug size should be determined by your furniture placement. There are a few functional tips to consider: Area rugs naturally seem to pro-

vide boundaries for a room. If you have an open-concept home and your furniture items are not against a wall, an area rug defines the space as if there were imaginary walls. The smallest area carpet — strictly for esthetic purposes — would highlight the coffee table alone. The rug would frame the table like a matte board frames a picture. In this case, the sofa and chairs should be placed on the wood floor around the rug. This not only visually appealing but also provides a functional consideration. Furniture that does not sit completely on a rug tends to feel imbalanced, and this leads us to the second rugsize option.

If you are inclined to select a large rug, try to ensure that all furnishings sit comfortably on the entire carpet surface. The size of the rug will be dictated by the dimension of the coffee table and the overall floor space of the seating arrangement. The shape of the carpet can vary; there are no rules that dictate what shape is best. If you have a sectional, you may find rectangular, square, oval and free-form designs all have merit. Seek mellow metallics Kim Cook The Associated Press Never been a heavy metal fan? The new look of brass, copper, bronze and nickel in home decor might change your mind. The finishes are warm, without the kitschy clash of some previous go-rounds. You’ll see these softer, richer-looking metals — joining gold and silver on the decor stage — as accents on accessories, as furniture embellishment and as a brushed finish on textiles. It’s a classic look that can work in both traditional and contemporary spaces. A simple bronze, steel or iron table is one of the season’s hot accent pieces. Nate Berkus has done a side table for Target in brass with an antiqued mirror top, and Pottery Barn’s got a collection of blackened iron ones with a polished industrial vibe. West Elm’s Element iron coffee table has an acidwashed, sandblasted trim. At the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York earlier this year, bronze tables made by Nick Davis in his foundry studio in Bedfordshire, England, drew crowds. Season’s second most famous plant a miracle Poinsettia’s bold colours make splash

well, technically speaking at least. The true flowers on a poinsettia plant are the somewhat inconspicuous yellow-coloured structures in the middle of modified leaves called bracts. And it is these bracts that are often referred to as the poinsettia’s flowers.

Jim Hole For Postmedia News Does the poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) really need an introduction? I mean, the only plant that is more famous than the poinsettia, during the Christmas season, is the iconic Christmas tree itself. But for the benefit of the few who have not heard of or seen a poinsettia, it is a very easy plant to identify. Essentially, if you’re looking at a plant that has several clusters of exceptionally large, brightly coloured flowers, the odds are pretty good that it’s a poinsettia. Poinsettias are indigenous to Central America and Mexico where they can easily grow three to four metres tall. They develop large, showy, red flowers specifically designed to catch the eye of hummingbirds, which find the poinsettia’s sugar-rich nectar irresistible. As the birds hunt for nectar, they inadvertently spread pollen from poinsettia to poinsettia — a win for both bird and plant.

Bright history The poinsettia acquired its common name from Joel Poinsett, the United States ambassador to Mexico who, during the mid 1800s, fell in love with the “flame-leaf ” flower and brought one back to the U.S. In the early 1900s, wild poinsettias were sold strict-

However, it didn’t take long for plant breeders to see the potential in this new, gangly, yet colourful shrub and they set to work transfor ming it into the compact plants that we recognize today. But breeders being breeders weren’t satisfied to stop there and eventually developed varieties in a range of colours and patterns including white, pink, speckled and marbled types. There was even a yellow flowered poinsettia that we grew a number of years ago, but it failed to capture the Christmas spirit of many poinsettia buyers. And, to be completely honest, I was one of those people who just couldn’t get excited about lemon-coloured poinsettias. They looked rather pretty but always seemed so very un-Christmas-like.

Best features Most would say that the poinsettia’s bright, colourful flowers are its best feature, but they’d be wrong —

High-quality poinsettias are tough to grow from cuttings. We start our poinsettias in the greenhouse in July and it takes a lot of tweaking and cajoling to get them to look just right for Christmas. B u t o n c e t h e y h av e reached maturity, they are a snap to maintain in the home. Just remember two things: Sunlight and water. If you place a poinsettia in a bright to sunny spot during the day, it will have all the light that it needs. Watering is very simple as well. Stick your index finger into the soil and up to the first knuckle. If the soil feels moist, leave the poinsettia alone, but if the soil feels dry, give the pot a thorough drenching of water. Beyond adequate water and sunlight, all that is left to do is enjoy the show.

How perfect is it? Any plant that can undergo a miraculous transformation from green leaves to a multitude of boldly coloured bracts just in time for the Christmas season is darn near perfect in my opinion. And I’m sure that if Joel Poinsett were around today he would wholeheartedly agree.

CHEDDAR BISCUITS

Ingredients:

• 2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting • 1 teaspoon salt • 4 teaspoons baking powder • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
