The original, dark fir flooring of this 100-year-old room has been freed of its oppressive shag cover. The refinished, auburn floor was neither the beginning nor the final project of this beautiful nursery that Jenna Pryor, of Plum Home + Design, envisioned when she learned she was pregnant. The room’s renovation began with the removal of thousands of pounds of lathe, plaster and sawdust, and continued through the course of her pregnancy. Two weeks before her son Harrison was born, Pryor found herself “nesting” — high on a ladder with a laser level, she applied silver star decals to the top quarter of the room.

“I didn’t know what gender I was having,” says Pryor. With its white, cream and gold colour scheme it screams neither girlish nor boyish. In fact, if you didn’t spot the crib, you’d need to look more closely at the diaper-change pad and framed antique rattle to realize the room’s status as a nursery. “When I chose the colour scheme, I didn’t want to do ‘baby.’ I spend a lot of time in this room, so I designed a room that I could love as much as he does,” Pryor says, “Besides, these colours will allow the room to grow with him. We can always add blue and green.” As Pryor’s due date came and went, she hung photos, filled the bookcase and added Beatrix Potter plates (preserved from both her and her husband Peter’s childhood) to the nursery shelves. When her son arrived (two weeks late), his room was a space filled with beautiful things, each infused with the values and stories of his family, and placed there with love.

CHANGE TABLE “We go to England for all of our antiques to sell at the store. I brought this sideboard back for the store, lacquered it, then fell in love with it. The great thing about sideboards is they are taller than change tables and perfect for my husband, who is a tall piece of timber. Also, they are a lot more affordable, with great storage. When Harrison gets older, it can still stay in the room — or I can use it somewhere else in the house.”

CHAIR “This was my splurge. It is the most comfortable chair ever. I can put my head back, the arms are good for nursing, and it’s a swivel rocker. It was custom made by an Ontario family who has been doing this for 30 years. They do all the Sarah Richardson furniture and, honestly, the price point for their pieces is the same as Crate and Barrel. I ordered the ottoman to match (the top comes off for storage) because my mom-friends said I needed it. That, and an iPad!”

CRIB “So, where I splurged on the chair, I saved on the crib. You can’t spend everywhere. For instance, my lamp is from Target. There are always trade-offs and I have this high-low thing throughout.”

FRAMED SIGNS “Justine Mah is an amazing printmaker from Edmonton and she made the gold prints for me.

Printmaker Justine Mah created framed gold prints. She knew my colour scheme, and she just did something beautiful for me. We are both new moms, so we’ve started texting each other at 3 a.m.”

BUNNY RATTLE “This rattle is another antique I bought in England, which I just put in a shadow frame. I think I was drawn to it because when I was a little girl I loved bunnies. My mom put bunnies throughout my room, one of which I still have.”

ANIMAL PRINTS “These are by one of my favourite artists. She does beautiful photos of baby animals. I had to get a bunny, of course, and my husband is Australian so he had to be represented with the kangaroo.”

GREY DRAPES “The drapes I had custom-made with fabric that is wipeable, washable, and won’t fade. And they’re not ‘baby,’ which is great. I had the rings sewn directly to the drapery so they don’t constantly pop off. I have an amazing seamstress who I’ve worked with for many years. She made the drapes as well as the pillow on my chair.”

Q:

My girlfriend and I recently bought a condo. It’s a two bedroom in an older building, with fairly large rooms and windows. We don’t consider it our forever address, but we will be here for at least five years. That said, we need advice on our window coverings. Neither of us are really drapery type girls, but we do require privacy from neighbouring buildings. My girlfriend has an attachment to California shutters, but I find them dated and heavy looking. I prefer roller blinds, but she thinks they’re too utilitarian. Any ideas? A: I’m not expecting to score points with your girlfriend when I say I side with you when it comes to California (plantation) shutters. I think they have a place (a beach house or in a bathroom) but I’m personally not a fan of these shutters from a decorative perspective. I realize you and I are in the minority; plantation shutters are loved by many because they’re an easy way to cover every window of a house without the effort or expense of draperies. I like the simplicity of roller blinds, but, at the same time, I understand your girlfriend’s concern regarding the utilitarian look. If they are intended to be the primary window covering (as I assume they are in your condo), then I think they look best with simple, uncluttered furnishings. They can be the perfect fix for lofts or condos, but if your tastes lean toward traditional decor, they’re probably not going to be decorative enough on the windows. For a more layered look, I’ve used roller blinds in addition to linen sheers and decorative side panels. I like them mounted on the inside frame of the window be-

hind a four-inch (10.16 cm) wooden valance (valance height will vary depending on the size of the window and blind) that is painted the same colour as the window trim. You wouldn’ t even realiz e they’re there until they’re rolled down at night for privacy. Depending on how close your windows are to the windows of the neighbouring building, you may need to have the blinds down during the day and in this case, I like the roller shades pictured here by Delia Shades (deliashades.com). Ten years ago, industrial designer Delia Heilig felt the same way as your girlfriend about roller shades, so she set out to change that. After perfecting the screen-printing process, Delia started designing and producing roller shades patterned after traditional window coverings from around the world. When you view her website, you see Moroccan arches, French wrought iron work and Indian jali patterns, to name but a few. Delia stocks three weights of roller shade mesh and can line them with blackout lining if total light blocking or privacy is required. Every shade is made to order with window measurements you provide. Pricing is about $25 a square foot (0.1 square metre). You may not want to use these in every room, but I think they’re perfect for principal rooms in which you’re looking to make a statement. And for the other rooms, investigate options at such stores as Blinds to Go or Home Depot. Check the rules of your condo board when it comes to window coverings, because with any luck, your building doesn’t allow plantation shutters and you and I won’t have to take the blame for poohpoohing them in the first place.

Most homeowners just assume that a new set of stairs is going to be safe. Whether they’re building new or retrofitting, I never really hear a homeowner ask for safe stairs. But small shortcuts during construction can compromise their safety, and the consequences from a trip or fall could last a lifetime. Every step in a staircase should be well-spaced and built right. That means the total length of each stair, drywall to drywall — or what the pros like to call, stringer to stringer — must be a minimum of 86.4 centimetres (34 inches). The rise or the total height of each step can be no more than 20 cm (7 ⅞ inches), and the run a minimum of 21 cm (8 ¼ inches) with a 23.5-cm (9¼-inch) tread. The tread is the part on the step where you place your foot.) You’ll also need a handrail for two treads or more. In most cases, a handrail should be installed between 86.4 and 96.5 cm (34 and 38 inches) above the stair treads. But for small kids who can’t reach that high, you can also get secondary

But if you’re looking to spend a bit more you can also get custom-built stairs, which can make a big impact on your home, sometimes being a great centrepiece. You will need to research the custom-stairs builder — do a reference and background check, which includes taking a look at their work and speaking to past clients. Make no mistake, safety is a big factor in the stairs in your home. Stairs built years ago might have been considered “safe” back then, but not according to today’s building codes and standards. If you’re thinking of buying an older home or currently living in one, always check with local building authorities to make sure the stairs meet current code requirements and that they are built right. Keep an eye out for loose handrails, worn treads, and uneven steps, rises or runs. If you think the stairs in your home could be a hazard call in a pro for an assessment. The repairs you make now could save you or someone you love from a bad fall.

But let’s say you want to move the location of the staircase. That will most likely involve re-engineering the upstairs floor supports, which not only means a permit, but also more labour, materials and money. Homeowners should know what they can and can’t do when it comes to stairs. For example, a spiral staircase can’t be a home’s main staircase — you’ll always need another one.
