No matter what type of fireplace you curl up to, it’s important to know how to enjoy it safely.

When a wood-burning fireplace is in use, air is continually drawn out of the home and up the chimney. This air must be replaced to maintain the air balance flowing in and out of the home. This is essential for the safe operation of all fuel-burning appliances. This balancing act ensures adequate air for complete combustion and ventilation of the flue gases.

If the air balance is altered because of poor air supply or a blocked chimney, carbon monoxide (CO) and soot can be produced and down drafting can occur. To prevent smoke and flue gases from

entering your home, follow these precautions: When a fireplace is in use, an open damper allows the smoke and gases to exit.

Ensure an adequate fresh air supply before lighting the fire. Some fireplaces come with a combustion air duct.

If not, you must have a fresh air supply nearby (such as an open window).

Keep the fresh air supply open until the fire is completely out. After the fire is out and the ashes are cold, close the damper.

The first line of defence against carbon monoxide poisoning is the proper installation, use, maintenance and inspection of all your fuel-burning appliances. The second line of defence is a detector. Make sure the CO detector is approved to the latest standards. Look for CSA 6.19 or CSA 6.19-01 on the package.

Consider installing glass doors on your wood-burning fireplace. The doors will pre-

vent heat in your home from escaping up the chimney, saving you money on your heating bill.

Natural gas fireplaces can operate at over 60-per-cent efficiency; whereas, a typical wood-burning fireplace operates at 10 per cent. Efficiency refers to the amount of heat that is extracted from the flame and is used to heat the home.

Pellet stoves and inserts are becoming popular and are also environmentally friendly, burn cleanly and are cost effective. The pellets are made from 100-per-cent waste sawdust.

An electric fireplace is a great option if you live in an apartment and want the look and feel of a fireplace. While they are not meant to heat a large area, they do provide some comfort to a room.

Pay close attention to upcoming civic election Stu Niebergall Growth is a fundamental component of prosperity. Growth and prosperity go hand in hand.

Our Industry plays a pivotal role in the growth and prosperity of our city. We create the neighbourhoods and build the houses that define our city’s growth. We play a vital role in attracting new companies and skilled and qualified workers to our city through the provision of quality housing and choice. In turn, our industry contributes back into the economy by creating jobs and wages — wages which are spent locally, creating even more economic growth and prosperity.

The City of Regina also plays a role in Regina’s growth. The city controls and monitors land supply, infrastructure investment,

building and development fees and charges, the timing of development application and building permit approvals, and taxes — items that directly impact Regina’s growth — items that directly impact our industry.

That is why the residential construction industry is paying close attention to the upcoming civic election on Oct. 24 and one of the items that is topping the election agenda is housing affordability.

And so it should. This is an issue that impacts us all. It is an issue that pales the proposed stadium concerns by comparison. That is because the proposed stadium will not have nearly the economic impact on Regina citizens as will the issues related to housing and development.

The cost of housing relative to income is a key determining factor in quality of life and a key component in attracting the skilled workers that are so important to our economic growth.

Canada has endorsed the view that housing is a basic human right. Municipalities, including

municipal councils, policy-makers, and planners, have a unique opportunity to ensure that people’s human rights are respected in the design and delivery of policy affecting housing and development in Regina by ensuring that their decisions do not negatively impact housing affordability.

There are the two areas to watch closely. First, the area of government imposed costs. In August 2012, according to Statistics Canada’s New Housing Price Index, Regina leads only behind Toronto as having the largest year-over-year and monthly increases in new homes prices so far in 2012. The main reason for this increase? The most significant drivers of cost have been raw land (increasing in speculative value) and government fees and levies.

Further to this, a Canada West Foundation study found that when government imposes costs on new home development, not only are the prices of new homes affected, but the prices of all houses in the city also increase by that same cost.

In other words as the cost of build-

ing new homes increases, the price of all houses in the city increases, thereby impacting housing affordability right across the board.

Secondly, studies show that one of the most pervasive factors impacting the cost of housing in general, which also falls under municipal government jurisdiction, is the practice of urban containment through the restriction of Greenfield development (the development of new land on the urban fringe). This is a solution that is offered to combat “urban sprawl” — restricting growth on the city’s urban fringe and concentrating on infill development.

However, if land use policies were to restrict the development of land during this period of economic prosperity, in-migration to our city, and increased demand for housing, this would have the disastrous consequence of driving up the price of housing.

When government imposed costs and restrictive land use policies have negative impacts on housing affordability this decreases the quality of life that makes our city

an attractive place to live — qualities that are essential in attracting the skilled labour that is an essential part of our continued growth.

As such, if we are to remain well poised to continue to grow and prosper in the long run the cost of housing relative to income must remain affordable.

The Residential Construction Industry is positioned to work closely with policy and decision makers to ensure that housing affordability is an underlying consideration in all decisions related to housing and development in Regina. By supporting a growth agenda, City of Regina citizens can support the issue of housing affordability as well.

Ultimately, the decisions of city council impact not only our industry, and those purchasing newly built homes, but by impacting housing affordability right across the board, the city’s housing and development decisions impact us all. By voting for those candidates who support a growth agenda, we all will benefit. On Oct. 24, get out and vote for the continued growth and prosperity of our city.

Reena Nerbas For Postmedia News Q: I have your books but am unable to locate this solution. Recently a drop of crazy glue landed on my laminated flooring and I tried to clean it with a face tissue.

I now have a white mark of tissue and glue.

Would appreciate your advice on removing this mark.

A: This is one of those cases where WD-40 comes in handy. Test on an inconspicuous area first, then spray the area and leave for 10 minutes. Scrub with an abrasive (not steel wool) cloth. After glue is gone, wipe area with dish soap and water. Some people use acetone to remove super glue but chances are good it will discolour the laminate.

There are some areas in southern Ontario (including Toronto), Winnipeg, southern Alberta and southern British Columbia — including Vancouver — that have been known to have termites. But you need to do your research. Every area is different.

I always say never ignore your environment. If you’re building in an area that’s known to have termites there are construction measures you can take.

Signs of damage caused by termites in your home include discarded wings, hollow sounding wood and termite droppings, otherwise known as frass. homes is a direct result of their eating habits. The products we use to build homes just happen to be on their menu. But homeowners rarely see the damage happening because termites eat wood from the inside out.

For example, if you find wood in your home that sounds hollow when you tap it there’s a pretty good chance it is hollow. Termites make wood look like Swiss cheese on the inside until there’s nothing left but dust — or at least what you think is dust. Termite poop actually looks like sawdust — go figure.

By the way, the technical term is

Termites love moisture. So call a professional to repair anything that’s leaking, including faucets, water pipes and A/C units. Keep your gutters and downspouts clean. Keep your vents clear and open — adding screens to outside vents is also a good idea. Remove plant materials around your home that could attract these critters.

Your next job is finding a qualified contractor who has plenty of experience dealing with these kinds of pests. They’ll block access routes by sealing up cracks where bugs might enter. They will make sure water is diverted away from your foundation. And any structure they need to fix should be done with materials that can stand up to nature’s demo team.

Q: My new kitchen chairs have very small vinyl tipped feet. I have not found a way to make the felt pads I usually use stay on. I have used them: As they are, self-adhesive pads and I have used Gorilla Glue but nothing will remain on the feet of the chairs. Any suggestions?

A: Forget the glue. The challenge of the glue not holding is a result of glue being absorbed into the felt pads; therefore strength of the glue won’t make a difference.

Either purchase a plastic or wooden leg protector and nail kit (the nail is hammered directly into the chair foot).

Or purchase properly fitted rubber chair protectors that slide onto chair feet.

Living on Canadian soil has its benefits, such as world-class resources, a robust economy and workforce and nature’s playground in our own backyard. Another huge benefit — especially as a contractor and homeowner — is something that our soil doesn’t have: a lot of termites.

That’s not to say we’re termitefree. But for now, termites aren’t a big issue for the majority of Canada.

First, all stumps, roots and wood debris needs to be removed to a minimum depth of 300 mm (11¾ inches) under the building.

Then, there should be a minimum clearance of 450 mm (17¾ inches) between structural wood elements and the ground below them.

If you live in an area where foundations are insulated there needs to be a metal or plastic barrier between the insulation and finished materials. This stops termites from passing through or behind insulation.

Structural wood supported by anything directly touching soil needs to be PT, or pressure-treated, with a chemical that’s toxic to termites.

Why is it important to make sure wood elements are resistant to decay? Because termites need soft wood to tunnel through to create passageways and nests.

But unlike carpenter ants, termites will actually eat the wood — and not just wood. They’ll feed on all cellulose-based material: books, boxes, furniture and drywall.

Eisner, 36, bought a Leslieville semi-detached last May and gutted the top floor, turning it into a combination kitchen-living-dining area by removing two bedrooms and installing an Ikea kitchen in the resulting open space. He turned the second floor into a self-contained one-bedroom apartment, where he lives.

Downstairs remained largely as it was, and he pays his mortgage by renting it out.

He’s pleased with the arrangement, except for one thing: The sea foam-green colour of the walls.

“I’m not happy with this paint colour,” admits Eisner, a software developer. “But the thing is, I don’t know how to pick that stuff. I picked it off a paint chip. I thought, ‘This’ll look good.’ And I came in here when it was done and went, ‘Aww, this is a little girlie.’”

Decor adviser Damon Snider says he can decorate in a manner “both dope and refined.’ barked on a new venture: an interior decoration and design side to his firm, TypeD. He’s aiming the service at single men, 25 to 45, many of whom are decorating the first home they’ve ever purchased.

A press release cited Snider’s “experience as a ‘dude’” and promised he can help men create a living space that is “both dope and refined.”

The need for such a service became evident to Snider when he witnessed how his single male friends were navigating the transition to home ownership. “You’d walk into their place and see a lot of frat-inspired decor that a typical dude would inevitably decorate their place with,” Snider says. Their homes brimmed with overflow from their university days and even earlier: handme-down furniture, bikini and Bob Marley posters, and scattered music and sports equipment.

Snider, by contrast, takes pride in the clean, contem-

porary look of his house in the Bathurst and Sheppard area of Toronto. He says he was encouraged to start his decorating enterprise after receiving positive feedback from men and women alike.

“Bringing females back, they basically saw that it was a really masculine decor; however, it was move-in ready and chick-friendly,” Snider says. He argues it’s important for single men to fight their inclination to do things on the quick and cheap, and truly invest in their environment. A well-appointed home exudes attentiveness and a sense of responsibility. These are things that women want to see, he reasons.

Men “have an idea about what they want. They just don’t know how to execute it,” he says. “If you’re just going to take your old milk crates to your new place, you may as well have stayed in your old apartment.”

An industrial crate gives a potted plant a manly touch. want, they typically have no idea where to find it, casual furniture shopping not being a favourite pastime of many single men. Snider introduces them to stores like Umbra and others that carry items that give off a manly vibe.

One of Snider’s early clients is Brandon Kaplan, who works in sales in the telecommunications sector. Kaplan, 28, heard about Snider’s business through a mutual friend.

The decorator came to Kaplan’s King West-area loft in Toronto for an initial consultation. He immediately impressed the new homeowner with a manfriendly, respectful approach to giving advice.

At first, Kaplan says, “he wasn’t telling so much as he was listening.”

And by listening to Kaplan’s interests, specifically basketball and guitar, Snider was able to come up with the idea of mounting vintage guitars and a retro basketball hoop against the condo’s brick walls. Great ideas, Kaplan thought.

He also appreciates Snider’s teach-a-man-to-fish philosophy. “I teach them while I’m consulting,” Snider says.

“This is why you can’t paint all your walls red. This is why you can’t clump all your

furniture in one area.”

Snider also counsels men to be patient and get a feel for their new homes before rushing to fill them up. The transformation of Kaplan’s loft should take a few months.

Importantly, Kaplan says the plans have his girlfriend’s approval. Snider says that’s often a consideration for men in a relationship that hasn’t reached the move-in stage.

In all, Kaplan says hiring Type-D was money well spent. “I don’t know if every guy would actively seek this type of thing, but I can tell you with 100-per-cent certainty that every guy in my age group could greatly benefit,” he says.

Yet Eisner may be echoing the feelings of a lot of younger single men when he says, “I don’t think I’m that vain that I would need a decorator. “ ... I’m living in a bachelor pad with my stuff everywhere. It doesn’t matter if I pay a guy to design my space.

It’s always going to be a little messy.”

It infects some homeowners, too.

Barbara and Bruce Scott caught a serious case when they moved into an older home on Portage Inlet in Victoria, but cured themselves with a renovation that added several feet to almost every room.

They bought their 1958 home 10 years ago from the original owners. A twophase makeover saw them popping out walls here, there and everywhere. When they couldn’t extend a wall, they used mirrors to expand the space visually.

“The house was structurally in very good shape, but it was unappealing,” Barbara recalling of their first viewing. “There had been no yard work done. It was very outdated and the rooms felt small. We wanted to modernize it and open up the views.”

They did a quick facelift

This waterfront home in Victoria looked like a caricature from the 1950s, but the new owners came in and built on the building’s good bones. before moving in, “to bring it up to our standards so we could live there for a while” — which involved removing old panelling and carpets. They added new maple floors and renovated a bathroom.

A few years later came a major reconstruction, popping out the master-bedroom windows three feet un-

der the eaves, moving a wall several feet, pushing out the living-room windows three feet and adding a “carriage house” suite over the garage.

“We hired a contractor to do it properly, but we did a lot of the donkey work ourselves,” said Barbara, a realtor for 36 years. Her husband owned his own house-

inspection firm — it’s how they met — and they now work as team realtors.

They were married in the house, which prompted a garden transformation that wrapped up recently with the completion of an inviting outdoor room. As an added feature, they created a two-foot roof extension and covered it with glass.

With five boys between them, the duo knew all about large houses, but this time they wanted a home just for two. “It is not a large house, just 2,000 square feet, plus 600 for the carriage house,” Barbara said. “But the setting is what matters most.”

Aleppo fighting intensifies Bassem Mroue The Associated Press BEIRUT — Fighting over Syria’s largest city intensified Friday, with the most widespread battles reported there in two months as rebel forces launched a new offensive to rout President Bashar Assad’s forces from Aleppo, activists said.

Some of the heaviest fighting erupted in the predominantly Kurdish neighbourhood of Sheikh Maksoud, which was drawn into the conflict for the first time. Kurds make up Syria’s largest minority

and have been split in their loyalties. Since the uprising against Assad began 18 months ago, some Kurds have sided with the rebels while others have supported the regime. Aleppo’s Sheikh Maksoud neighbourhood is mostly under the control of a pro-government Kurdish group. There were conflicting reports on whether Kurdish gunmen took part in Friday’s fighting.

Aleppo, a city of three million that was once a bastion of support for Assad, has emerged as a key battleground in Syria’s civil war. Its fall would give the opposition a major strategic victory, with a strong-

hold in the north near the Turkish border. A rebel defeat, at the very least, would buy the regime more time. “The city is witnessing one of the most violent days. All fronts are on fire,” activist Baraa al-Halabi said. In the diplomatic arena, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was hosting representatives of the Friends of Syria group — a coalition that includes the United States, the European Union and the Arab League — on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly.

The group is seeking better cooperation among the groups that oppose Assad.

Obama, Netanyahu confer on Iran Margaret Talev and Julie Hirschfeld Davis Bloomberg News U.S. President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are in “full agreement” on the goal of preventing Iran from getting a nuclear weapon, the White House said as Republican candidate Mitt Romney renewed his attacks on the administration’s handling of the Middle East.

Obama had a 20-minute call with Netanyahu Friday, the president’s only publicly announced one-onone discussion with a foreign leader this week, following weeks of tensions between the leaders over how aggressively to confront Iran’s nuclear development program.

It also had implications for U.S. domestic politics, Barack coming 39 days Obama before the presidential election.

Romney spoke by phone with Netanyahu within hours of Obama’s conversation.

Romney has sought to use signs of differences between Obama and Netanyahu over Iran to raise doubts with American Jewish voters about the president’s commitment to Israel and his ability to manage turmoil in the Middle East and North Africa. The Obama administration, in Friday’s statement, said the U.S. alliance with Israel is “unshakable.”

“The prime minister welcomed President Obama’s commitment before the United Nations General Assembly to do what we must to achieve” the goal of preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, the White House said in its statement.

Netanyahu has been pushing the U.S. and western nations to set a “red line” at which point Iran’s nuclear development would warrant a military response.

Obama, while urging more time for negotiations and for economic sanctions to pressure Iran, has said the U.S. won’t allow the Islamic Republic to build a nuclear weapon.

In his speech Thursday to the UN General Assembly, Netanyahu held up a cartoon-style drawing of a bomb as a prop to get international attention for his call for the U.S. to issue a more direct warning to Iran.

“By next spring, at most next summer, at current enrichment rates, they will have finished the medium enrichment and moved on to the final stage,” Netanyahu said.

Obama and Netanyahu both attended the UN session in New York this week, though not at the same time. Israeli media reported earlier this month that the U.S. president rebuffed Netanyahu’s request for a meeting, which Obama aides denied. The reports were published on the same day Netanyahu told reporters in Jerusalem that nations that “refuse to put a red line before Iran don’t have the moral right to place a red light before Israel.”

Romney, who has repeatedly criticized Obama for not meeting with Netanyahu while the prime minister is in the U.S., told reporters after speaking with Netanyahu that while he hoped diplomacy can resolve the standoff, military action must not be ruled out. “We spoke about his assessment of where the red line ought to be drawn, and my own views with regards to Iran,” Romney said of the conversation.

U.S. man fatally shoots masked son The Associated Press NEW FAIRFIELD, Conn. — A fifth-grade teacher fatally shot a masked teenager in self-defence outside his neighbour’s house during what he thought was an attempted burglary, only to discover it was his son, state police said.

The killing of 15-year-old Tyler Giuliano shortly after midnight Thursday left his quiet Connecticut town of New Fairfield reeling in confusion and grief. The teen’s father, Jeffrey Giuliano, is a popular fifth-grade teacher in the community, where there is very little violent crime.

The neighbour, who is the teen’s aunt, was alone in her house and believed someone was breaking in.

She called the teenager’s father, who lives next door. He grabbed a gun, went outside, confronted someone wearing a black ski mask and black clothing and fired when the person went at him with a shiny weapon in his hand, police said.

ROSEVILLE, Mich. — Authorities drilled through concrete and removed two samples of wet soil and clay in a modest Detroit-area neighbourhood Friday in the latest effort to find the remains of Teamsters boss Jimmy Hoffa, who disappeared in 1975.

There was no visible sign of human remains, but test results could be ready by Monday, Roseville Police Chief James Berlin said.

“We’re not sure if anything is down there. That’s what this is all about,” Berlin said.

They drilled the concrete floor of a shed adjacent to a driveway where a recent radar test revealed a shift in the soil. The latest investigation was launched after a man told police that he saw a body being buried under the driveway 35 years ago and “thinks it may have been Jimmy.”

Authorities have already said they don’t think the timeline adds up and that it’s unlikely Hoffa’s body is there. He was last seen July 30, 1975, outside a restaurant in Oakland County, about 50 kilometres to the west.

“I don’t believe it’s Mr. Hoffa. I don’t know what it is,” said Berlin, who was contacted last month by the man who said he witnessed a

body being buried there.

“We received credible information that a crime may have occurred. We’re not doing anything we wouldn’t have done on any other case.”

The homeowner, Patricia Szpunar, 72, has lived there since 1988.

She said her son uses the shed to store two workbenches and his motorcycle. Police detectives appeared two weeks ago and said they may need to search her yard for a body.

“I laughed at them,” Szpunar said Friday. “I looked at them and said, ‘What? Do you think Jimmy Hoffa is buried in my backyard?’ ... They just looked at me, and asked why I said Jimmy Hoffa.”

Jef frey Giuliano hadn’t returned a message seeking comment on what happened. No one responded to knocks on the front door at his home or his sister’s.

No charges have been filed.

John Hodge, the top elected official of the town of nearly 14,000 people about 80 kilometres from New York City, doesn’t recall another killing in his eight years on the job. “You certainly don’t expect it to happen in your own small hometown where there’s very little crime.”

The Giuliano home has a threecar garage, with a long, circular driveway near the end of a street.

Recently we welcomed students to the College Quarter undergraduate residences (September 2011). They were the first of 800 students who now call the new residences home.

Graduate House, our next new residence, will open in 2013.

We announced our ninth president, Ilene Busch-Vishniac (December 2011). Ilene succeeded Peter MacKinnon, who had held the position since 1999.

The International Vaccine Centre (InterVac) opened (September 2011) alongside the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO). VIDOInterVac researchers are using the cutting-edge facility to address cattle disease and food security in Kenya, among other issues.

U of S researchers, working with the Geological Survey of Canada, discovered a massive crater in the Arctic that could date back as much as 350 million years (July 2012).

At 82, Walter Martin received his Bachelor of Science honours degree in land use and environmental studies. A father and grandfather, he completed his degree over nine years (June 2012).

To enhance our students’ experience, we announced our commitment to the Gordon Oakes-Red Bear Student Centre and unveiled the design

by Douglas Cardinal (October 2011).

The annual Graduation Powwow was held in the Bowl (May 2012), bringing this event back to the heart of the campus.

Graduates from the U of S and Saskatchewan high schools joined dancers and performers for the celebration.

A new campus in Regina gives nursing students the option to study at the U of S closer to home (August 2012). This is the latest location in our history of providing programs across the province. Nursing students can also study at the U of S in La Ronge, Ile-a-le-Crosse and Prince Albert.

Huskies star Ben Hennan was selected as the first overall draft pick in the Canadian Football League. The Saskatchewan Roughriders made the announcement at the annual Dogs’ Breakfast in Saskatoon (May 2012).

With a generous donation from Leslie and Irene Dubé (September 2011), past government contributions and a move-in date for D-wing steadily approaching, the Health Sciences project made significant progress.

Troy Harkness, U of S researcher, is leading a project exploring ways to fight drug-resistant cancer. This research could help people with various forms of cancer (December 2011).

The Molecular Design Research Group, a team from a number of disciplines across campus, is fighting drug-resistant, lifethreatening bacteria using the Canadian Light Source synchrotron and facilities at the Saskatchewan Structural Science Centre (October 2011).

Building on our history of bringing programming to and creating connections with First Nations and Métis communities, we opened the Office of Aboriginal Initiatives at the English River First Nation urban reserve (May 2011).

College of Arts and Science student Anne Kelly was named a Rhodes Scholar, one of only 11 Canadian students to receive the honour (November 2011). She plans to complete her master’s in medieval studies at Oxford before continuing on to doctoral studies.
