Wallpaper making a comeback Prints, colours popular Amanda Ash Postmedia News It was everywhere — living rooms, kitchens, stairwells, even ceilings. And then it wasn’t. Wallpaper’s past appeal had a lot to do with its durability and knack for covering up wall imperfections, says Edmonton interior designer Lori Elms. But its popularity also stemmed from being an easy, accessible do-it-yourself decor project for the average person. In the ’60s and ’70s, the layering of prints was huge. In the ’80s, mini prints began to dominate, especially those in pastel colours and slightly more discreet patterns. But when the ’90s hit, everyone looked at their walls, scratched their heads and began peeling it all off. “It kind of got overdone,

Many homeowners use wallpaper to create feature walls that add texture and interest to a room. which is probably why it totally dropped off by the ’90s, because we were sick of it,” Elms says. “It was one of those trends that was done to death.” Elms says interior decor fashions always tend to mirror what’s trending in cloth-

ing fashions. And that’s one of the reasons wallpaper has come back into style. Today, the vinyl wall coverings come in similarly bold proportions that mimic what models are wearing on the runway. “Prints are back. The pat-

terns are big and graphic. Interior design is a lot about texture now, and a lot of these wallpapers offer texture in a very visual way because they’re literally threedimensional,” Elms says. “And I think there’s a whole generation that hasn’t

seen wallpaper for 20 years, so for them it’s fresh and new.” Elms says we’re in an era where prints are being layered again. Homeowners went through a simple, more minimalist, decorating phase in the last

decade, handcuffed to neutral tones such as greys and taupes. That eventually morphed into our current obsession over colours and prints. Today, we’re seeing bigger patterns, stylized florals and geometrics. The more mainstream wallpapers tend to come in modern blacks, whites, greys or silvers with a bit of a sheen. Thankfully, we’re no longer wallpapering every inch of our homes as was typical 30 or 40 years ago, save maybe in bathrooms or powder rooms. Elms says it’s more about using wallpaper to highlight a feature wall in a living room, bedroom or an entryway. One thing that hasn’t changed over the years is the wet-and-hang application process, meaning homeowners should count on some scraping and peeling in a their not-too-distant futures. But right now, wallpaper fulfils a home-design craving, which outweighs the thoughts of having to remove it. “It’s fun again. It’s fun to work with.”

Labour requirements need strategy Alan thomarat

CEO and President Canadian Home Builders’ Association – Saskatchewan Much has been said recently about the lack of clarity in the recently announced federal Job Grants initiative and, unfortunately, it hasn’t been very positive. Building on partnerships is helpful if we are to build successful programs that foster success and real measurable outcomes in any growth strategy. I say “unfortunately” because I don’t know sometimes how governments can win when crafting policy, especially the federal government when it tries to satisfy so many provinces and regions with different needs and socio-economic environments. Much of what I have to say are statements I continually make and addressed in a recent column. The residential construction industry in Saskatchewan faces unique labour market challenges that, for the most part, require some of the foundations of human resource management be applied. Saskatchewan’s business sector consists of about 40,000 small

businesses, with many involved in the residential construction industry. There is no need to reinvent the wheel; many companies have developed strategies that can fulfil their growing labour needs, but many others still are lacking the capacity to do so.

Employee recruitment and retention Employee recruitment and retention go hand in hand. Companies need to invest in their employees and make a conscious effort to support and entice workers to stay, not only because workers are in short supply in the province, but because the recruiting costs will exceed training and development costs. It is true Saskatchewan and Saskatoon’s trading area have very low unemployment rates, but certain sectors of the population, such as the aboriginal population, face education and skills challenges and the reality of higher unemployment. In order to be competitive, communities, trainers and all businesses will need to ready their workplaces to welcome and accept the changes our demographics and growing economy will demand.

In-migration and the foreign workforce Another opportunity that will

allow our province to continue to thrive is the net in-migration of foreign workers — more particularly, skilled foreign workers. Even with a focus on immigration of skilled workers, we must be certain to effectively integrate new Canadians into the Saskatchewan economy. There are many prog rams that of fer training courses to introduce best practices to employers and workers who are new to the residential construction industry. While the ideal situation would be to have a team of skilled and experienced workers on staff, this is no longer a possibility. Training new and existing employees ensures the longevity of a business and is the first step in re-building the province’s skilled labour pool. There remains a critical need in Saskatchewan for the federal government to increase the number of skilled workers that are permitted in Saskatchewan via the immigrant nominee program.

Meeting the challenge Many working in the trades are over age 50 and will be retiring and exiting the industry within the next 10 to 15 years. The next generation of tradespeople needs to begin training today as journeyperson programs take three to five years to complete. There are many opportunities in this industry to become a tradesperson or take over small busi-

nesses that may otherwise be lost when a generation of baby boomers retires and vibrant operations are closed. Succession planning is another key to ensuring the residential construction industry maintains its current growth pattern and builds capacity for more high quality, affordable homes in the province. A small investment today in tomorrow’s labour market is an investment in the future of our industry and the future of the province. The federal and provincial governments can redirect educational initiatives to help create and sustain an employment labour climate conducive to continued economic growth. The refreshing changes in the Saskatchewan Employment Act are clearly a signal that this province and our communities are clearing the path to welcome people and investment. The industries and employers must be creative and think outside the box to create a labour market development plan for Saskatchewan that takes into account the province’s changing demographics and the changing needs in industry. Companies can no longer maintain a status quo strategy for hiring workers — a fundamental change is required as to what companies consider the ideal worker to be. We need to appreciate the growing value of skilled workers

and take proactive action to retain our best and brightest and not lose the war for talent. Our industry believes government and industry must work together to fill the need for skilled labour. There is a high demand for skilled workers as well as a great deal of potential for career growth and self-employment within the residential construction industry and the sub-trades. All provinces should work with industry to offer proposals unique to their own needs that can satisfy the objectives of the Job Grants program. It isn’t reasonable to attack programs on the one hand that are too structured and an ill-fit for a given region, and then criticize other programs because they are too loose and lacking detail. The federal government has money on the table and the job creators, businesses and provincial ministries need to consider how to take advantage of this new opportunity. As one prominent builder in Saskatchewan always reminds me: “Do nothing, then nothing happens.” Alan Thomarat is president and CEO of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association — Saskatchewan and the Saskatoon & Region Home Builders Association. He also serves as a director on the national board of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association in Ottawa.

Cool it! Think before you buy Karen Turner Postmedia News Shawn Lewer gets a little hot under the collar when customers choose a ceiling fan simply because it’s stylish. “Don’t buy a look,” warns Lewer, owner of Northern Fan in Ottawa, who admits the selection of fan styles, sizes and colours available can be overwhelming. Where do you want to install the fan in your home is the first question she asks potential buyers. “We treat a bedroom different than a kitchen,” says Lewer, who has been selling ceiling fans for more than 20 years. She says the size of the room, the height of the ceilings and the amount of airflow you want to achieve are all important considerations. So is budget and the amount of fan noise and vibration you’re willing to put up with. And don’t be fooled by the size of the fan, she says. “Bigger isn’t always best. It’s motor strength

that determines air movement.” Motor strength is determined by the amount of cubic feet of air per minute it delivers. This number ranges from 2,200 to 8,000 for residential fans. The higher the motor strength, the lower the speed you can run the fan, which in turn, reduces the amount of electricity it uses and the noise and wobble it makes, she says. Installing a fan that is too small for the space or needs is a common mistake homeowners make, Lewer says. “It’s important to appropriately size your fan,” says the retailer, whose store has more than 80 operating fans installed for customers to test-run. Everything from basic white flush-mount fans to highperformance models suspended on rods with furniture-grade blades, ambient lighting and remote controls are on display. Typically, she says a 60-centimetre fan — measured from blade tip to blade tip — is for smaller spaces such as powder rooms, walk-in closets or kitchens where deep

cupboards prevent you from installing a larger fan. The shorter the blades, the narrower the coverage. Larger fans — anywhere from one to 1.8 metres — are better suited for larger spaces such as family rooms and bedrooms with high ceilings and are often mounted on a rod for better airflow. Traditional fans tend to have five blades, while contemporary models have three. Lewer warns against buying a fan with only one or two blades because the “breeze will be uneven.” Even if you have air conditioning, she recommends installing a ceiling fan to keep the cool air circulating. Since hot air rises and cold airdrops, a fan is an effective way to mix the air and take the pressure off your air conditioning unit. Better yet: it can save “up to 40 per cent on your energy costs,” Lewer says. And it’ll also boost your comfort level. “The wind chill effect on your skin makes you feel three to four degrees cooler,” she says.

Vacation-proof your home MIKE HOLMES Make it Right

There’s nothing better than a vacation, and summer’s the time most people seem to take them. But to really relax it’s important to make sure your home is protected while you’re gone. What’s the best way? Look like you’re at home when you’re away from home. There are plenty of things you can do to protect your home against break-ins. Most people will tell you to install timers on your lights, have your neighbour pick up the mail and let someone park in the driveway while you’re gone. Then there are the things you need to do to protect your home from potential damage. For instance, if you’re leaving in winter you should shut off the water and insulate any pipes that pass through cold zones, such as the attic and crawl space, so the pipes don’t freeze and burst. Or, so you’re not wasting energy you should unplug appliances, set the water heater to low and turn down the thermostat (27 C in the summer, 55 in the winter), and install a surge protector to protect against power surges. This is all standard stuff to protect your home. But you can do better than standard to secure it properly. Everyone always says to put your lights on a timer. It’s a good idea. But take it one step further. You can use a cellphone app to control when the lights come on in your home.

The Holmes Group

You can have the best lock, but if it can be kicked in it’s useless. Make sure your doors are strong, secure and installed properly by the professionals. This lets you switch up the times, which is important. All it takes is watching your home for a couple of nights for someone to notice the lights always come on at seven and turn off at ten — so the lights are on, but no one’s home. And you can’t forget about maintenance, especially on your home’s exterior. It can be a dead giveaway that you’re not home. If the lawn looks overgrown or branches haven’t been cleaned up after a storm, people will notice. You might consider hiring a landscaper or neighbour to mow your lawn or clear snow while you’re gone. Ask them to do a quick scan of the exterior after any major storms, to make sure noth-

ing is broken and any debris gets cleaned up. As a precaution, trim trees that can damage your home during high winds. Also, remember to lock your garage especially if it’s attached to your house because it can be an easy entry point if not secured properly. If your garage has a side door, use a deadbolt to lock it from the inside. And if the door has a window, make sure you can’t unlock the deadbolt by breaking the window. Laminated glass, although expensive, is a good option for extra security; it’s strong and heavy, so it offers better protection. Some home security systems will set of f an alarm if a window breaks

or a door gets busted, and they’ll notify you on your cellphone, no matter where you are. If you have a sliding door in your home, you can put a metal bar or a piece of wood on the track. That stops anyone from sliding the door open if they pick the lock. You can do the same for windows too. But a better option is installing multi-point lock windows and doors. The multi-point lock windows I’ve used have three locks on the inside that you can’t see or pick. One last thing about garages: If you have a garage door opener, make sure the door closes completely before you leave. Most garage door openers have a sensor, so if anything passes underneath the door while it’s closing it automatically goes back up. But sometimes even just some debris on the floor won’t let it close. Make sure it’s fully closed before you leave, or you’ll leave behind an entry point. Last but not least, don’t go broadcasting that you’re leaving — and I do mean broadcasting. Social media is fun, but it has risks. It’s amazing how much information people share nowadays. You can literally track a person just by looking at what they’re posting. Remember: It’s not just your friends that see this. Going on vacation is supposed to be fun. But you also need to be prepared. When it comes to protecting your home, it’s always better (and cheaper) to be safe than sorry. Catch Mike Holmes in his new series, Holmes Makes It Right Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on HGTV. For more information, visit hgtv.ca. For more information on home renovations, visit makeitright.ca.

Vassiliki Koutsothanasi/stock.xchng

Storing a swimsuit that’s still damp can cause a stubborn mildew odour. To deodorize the swimsuit, soak it in hot water and borax.

Removing mildew smell from clothing Reena Nerbas For Postmedia News Q: I read your column on a regular basis and love your solutions. Now I need some help. I packed a wet bathing suit coming home from a Hawaiian vacation a couple of winters ago, and even though I unpacked it and washed it right away, it has a mildew smell. I rewashed it, hung it up to dry, tried special bathing suit soap and washed it in vinegar with no luck. Couldn’t part with it, so I put it in a cupboard with my two other bathing suits. When I pulled them out recently, all three had a mildew smell. What is the best thing to do? Thanks. A: Before washing your bathing suits in the washing machine, soak them in hot water and borax, which doesn’t contains phosphates or bleach but is wonderful at zapping hard-to-remove odours. If you cannot find b o r a x , u s e a g e n e ro u s amount of Oxy Clean or tea tree oil and vinegar or baking soda. Q: When the felt floor protectors on furniture fall off they leave a sticky residue on my laminate floor. I have

tried Goo Gone, dish soap with a microfibre cloth, even scraping with a scraper tool. Nothing gets the residue off. A: Using a hair dryer, heat the area to loosen the glue. Next smear the area with smooth peanut butter and then lift the adhesive off the floor with the help of a plastic putty knife so the floor does not become scratched.

Feedback from Reader Who Cares Just thought I would offer my thoughts on a couple of things: Pouring melted ground beef fat down the drain could be costly in future as that fat will surely cool and solidify in the drain pipes. Re g arding the cloudy shower stall glass, I wonder if the stuff used to take the cloudiness off vehicle headlights would work. For cleaning four-sided graters, I have found a vegetable brush with a handle (rather than the block type) works wonders and takes no time at all. It’s larger than a toothbrush so that makes the job quicker and easier. A: Thank you for your kind feedback and excellent suggestions. I agree with you about my advice for reducing grease in beef.

furniture

Modern sofas are a good fit in your cabin fy sofa, then its depth will be a minimum of 36 inches (91.4 centimetres), although 40 inches (101.6 cm) is better. Sink-in sofas usually have down-wrapped cushions. Be choosy when it comes to fabric: Your legs will stick to vinyl and some polyesters; and, your behind will leave an imprint in microfibre. Ask for a detailed drawing from your upholsterer or hire a designer to draw one to reduce any dimension or style surprises. And last, if you can, find an upholsterer who has a showroom where you can test drive different sofas, and then make any necessary adjustments. Whether you go the custom route or splurge on the sofa you like in the showroom, be sure to measure the space where you plan to put the sofa, as well as any doorways and staircases through which the sofa will be delivered. Happy decorating! Send your small-space question to asksampynn@ gmail.com.

Q: I have a two-part question about sofas. One, can I use a modern sofa in a cabin? I’d like to move the ones in our living room at home to the cabin. Our sofa and loveseat are done in a taupe microfibre with square arms. Two, I’d like to replace our sofas at home with a sectional. I saw a designer one in a Toronto showroom and found the same one online, but it was very expensive. I’d like to have an upholsterer make a similar sectional for me. Will this be more cost effective? Love your summer home show. A: You can and should use your mod sofas at the cabin — although mediocre, handme-down furniture that has already moved from the living room to the basement should not find a final resting place at the cabin. If you like your sofas, however, then it’s easy to integrate them into your summer

will be upset every time you look at your sofa. Trust me, I’ve spoken with many stylish homeowners and even designers who are disappointed because a custom sofa turned out to be larger, smaller or stiffer than expected. One designer told me that she never sleeps the night before custom upholstery is delivered to a client. There are many things to consider with a sofa, such as the lean of the back, the feet, the type of springs and its arm width. So, when you’re spending $3,000 to $6,000 (or much more) plus the cost of fabric, you want to get it right. Designers have sofas custom made all the time, but the details get discussed with an upholsterer ad nauseam and there is usually a detailed drawing to accompany the discussion. I’m not trying to deter you from having a custom sofa made, but there are a few things you need to keep in mind. If you want a slouchy, com-

home. As an aside, I receive many letters about how cabins shouldn’t have textiles or surfaces that will show dirt. Brown sofas and dark wood tables may be more practical, but for Pinterest and magazine junkies who dream of bright, airy and sunshinefilled cabins, know that you may need to spot clean your sofa; or, cover and protect it from becoming grungy with a blanket or throw. The clean-lined sofas in this photo from my Summer Home show on HGTV were moved from a young couple’s city’s home. The couple wanted colour. So, to jazz up the space, we reupholstered their grandma’s hand-medown chairs in navy and had a custom ottoman made in Kelly green. My first custom sofa cost more than the car I was driving. I still have the sofa, but the car is long gone. That said, depending on the details of your sectional, custom upholstery can be less money. However, if you don’t get the dimensions right, then you
