Rockin’ the casbah in Moroccan style Go bold but keep theme to one room Jeffrey Fisher Postmedia News Q: Over the last year or so I have been noticing furniture and accessories with a Moroccan influence and I am really drawn to them. I would love to decorate my living room in this style, but my husband says it’s a passing trend and will look dated next year. Do you like this look and do you think an entire room decorated with a Moroccan theme is a waste of money? A: A year ago with this trend in full swing, I made the trek to Marrakesh and stayed at the iconic hotel La Mamounia. It originally opened in 1923 and has been the Marrakesh hotel for the rich and famous ever since. Not surprisingly with more than 85 years under her belt, the hotel was in need

reopening in 2009. There is no way for me to properly articulate the exotic spell that washed over me

the instant I walked through the Moorish arch of La Mamounia. The fairy tale setting, the waft of orange

blossoms and the ornate architecture was like nothing I have ever experienced. All of this sensory overload

even before visiting the snake charmers and spice vendors in the souk. I tell you this because I believe that we both share the esthetic draw of this magical country and if you have never been you must prioritize a trip to Morocco at some point in your life for the sheer mythical experience of it. (Keep in mind you’re reading design advice from a man who would hit the road and forever live from a suitcase if he could.) Now, to answer your question: If it’s your living room you’re thinking of turning into a Sultan’s tent, then I say don’t bother (chalk one up for hubby). I am, however, all for you adding a Moroccan leather pouf, a filigree metal lantern and/or an ornate coffee table to the mix. I’m of the belief — and actually live this way — that exotic items mixed in with your other furnishings make for a well-designed room that will remain timeless. Money well spent.

Beautiful wood finishes come at a price mIKE HOLMES Make it Right

I’m always telling homeowners to look beyond the lipstick and mascara — the finishes. But finishes are important to many homeowners. It’s what they see and live with every day. I get that. And I like finishes too. What I don’t like is when they’re used to hide problems or distract homeowners on the important issues. But as a contractor I’m proud of my finishes. With custom finishes you get exactly what you want as long as you hire the right professional. When you go to a big box store you’re stuck with what they have. But a custom piece for your home is personal and will fit exactly in the space it’s designed for. One of my favourite custom finishes has to be wood. Most contractors would probably agree with me (we can get excited over what most people might think is just an old piece wood. But wood finishes done right — whether it’s crown moulding, trim, cabinets or a display unit — add quality and value to any home. The other day one of my guys on the crew brought a heavy piece of Douglas fir. It was from a 140-yearold barn on his family’s property. When I saw the piece I couldn’t believe it. It was a solid piece of lumber from a massive tree. It was

Engineered wood is popular, partly because it’s much cheaper than real wood, but off-gassing is a big problem. worth a fortune. But the average homeowner probably wouldn’t have known it. Wood isn’t cheap, folks. It’s more expensive than most people think. Especially if the lumber comes from a mature tree. The bigger the tree, the stronger the wood. Remember when you were taught to count the rings in a tree to see how old it was? Well, those rings also tell you how strong it is. The more rings a tree has the more compact and solid it is. It’s hard to find lumber from older trees now, and when you do, it’s very expensive. Not everyone can afford solid lumber for an entire project. Some people will try to save money by using solid wood for the surface finish and an inferior wood on sections people won’t see. For exam-

ple, kitchen cabinet doors might be made of solid wood but the carcass (or back section of cabinet that forms a box) will be made from engineered wood. That’s why engineered woods have become so popular; solid wood costs three times more. The more common types of engineered wood include particleboard, plywood, oriented strand board (OSB) and medium-density fibreboard (MDF). These wood products are manufactured from smaller pieces of wood glued together into one piece using intense pressure and heat. Engineered woods are good because they make use of scrap lumber that can’t be used. They also help save older trees since smaller trees can be harvested to manu-

facture engineered wood. Sustainable, fast-growing trees like poplar are also good. This all makes engineered wood sound like the natural better choice. But engineered wood has its issues — and the big one is off gassing. Usually the adhesives used to bond engineered wood together contain formaldehyde, which is an irritant that can off-gas for years. If you’re exposed to high concentrations of formaldehyde, it can cause your eyes, nose or throat, or all of them, to burn. It can also trigger coughs. Long-term exposure can cause respiratory problems, especially in small kids. It’s even known to cause cancer in people regularly exposed to high doses, such as some industrial workers. Although the amount of off-gas-

Warranty on your biggest investment is vital Alan thomarat

CEO and President Canadian Home Builders’ Association – Saskatchewan Most Canadians west of the New Brunswick are already protected by third-party warranty or will be very soon, but purchasers of new homes in Saskatchewan are not entitled to the same protection that would be offered through a mandatory new home warranty program. Since 1994, the Canadian Home Builders’ Association — Saskatchewan, along with its affiliates in the Saskatoon and Regina regions, have lobbied the government of Saskatchewan to establish legislation requiring all home builders to be licensed and for all new homes to be covered by a third-party warranty. Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia have had a mandatory third-party warranty for many years, and after the leaky condo issue in B.C., that government had to put more teeth into its legislation. Just last week, Manitoba announced the introduction of warranty legislation and, in October, Alberta stepped up and introduced its own new home warranty act and regulations. Apparently, for 90 per cent of Canadians, their gover nments have seen the obvious value in this consumer protection initiative but also the value in the cross benefits in terms of building code adherence, tax compliance, tackling the underground economy, skilled trades training and professional-

ism, as well as stewardship in environmental responsibility. We think Saskatchewan should do the same. Being registered with a third-party warranty provider is a requirement of all builder members of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association in Saskatchewan. Some municipalities have worked with us, particularly the City of Saskatoon, that legislated that warranty is mandatory for all approved contractors. However, if you purchase a lot yourself, or if your home is outside city limits, or on privately developed land, this protection is not guaranteed. Until third-party warranty is mandatory on all homes in Saskatchewan, home buyers must make sure to ask their builders about home warranty before signing a purchase agreement and they should also do their homework when selecting a builder. When buying a new home, one assumes that if problems arise the builder will take care of them. However, the warranty offered by a builder is highly dependent upon the service the builder is willing to provide and may be null and void if the company goes out of business. It’s isn’t good enough for your builder to say, “Don’t worry I guarantee my work.” What if something bad happens and he’s not there. Trust me, it happens. Having third-party warranty ensures that your warranty does not disappear with the company. In addition, many lenders require warranty for mortgage approval. If they are going to give you a mortgage for a new home, a thirdparty warranty that there will be protection for your down payment and lenders helps monitor progress before they release payments to contractors.

Any disputes with your builder may be resolved through a mediation or conciliation process if you have a warranty. Should issues with your builder arise and you are unable to reach a mutually satisfactory agreement, the third-party warranty provider is available to help assist the parties resolve outstanding issues. While there are similarities between most programs, warranties do vary among providers. A basic warranty provides a one-year total warranty, after possession a twoyear building envelope warranty against water penetration and a five-year guarantee of structural components. Not all warranties are the same, so new home buyers should compare the programs and policies carefully. Consumers need to be aware of the benefits that third-party warranty provides. The third-party warranty carried by your builder may include any or all of the following components: • Deposit protection • Workmanship and materials, often one year • Water penetration and building envelope protection • Major structural defects: Five to 10 years • Additional living expenses, if required Ask different warranty providers what’s covered. Currently, there are four in the Saskatchewan market. Consumer products, from the smallest appliances to larger items such as stoves and automobiles, are currently sold with warranty in Saskatchewan. That’s right, you can get a warranty on a toaster, so shouldn’t you also be able to get a warranty on the biggest invest-

Moroccan Rich reds and wood tones Continued from F1 However, if you want to tile the walls, upholster your furniture pomegranate red and install carved arch doorways, I would personally save that riad feel (a riad is a traditional Moroccan house) for your master bedroom. Full-on theme rooms need to be creatively expressed in either guest rooms or for your own bedroom,

because it’s your personal space and you’ll decorate it however you and your husband want! (Though I’m not sure hubby will want to rock the casbah in his bedroom.) As soon as I walked into my hotel suite in Morocco, I wanted the complete look in my own home. But

Christmas tree conundrum Samantha Pynn Postmedia News Q: I can’t decide whether I should get an artificial tree or a real one this year. Also, do you have any tips for Christmas decorating trends this year? A: I’m using an artificial one. When it comes to artificial trees versus real ones, “real trees are as popular as ever,” says Hank DeJong of Sheridan Nurseries in Toronto. The cost of a real tree that has been cut and had all the dead needles shaken away is approximately $100. Artificial trees cost about $400. As far as trends go, I like a tree dressed in a maximum of one to two colours. Or just one type of ornament in different colours. don’t worry about trends. Pick something you love — candy canes, creamcolour ponies, ballet slippers, or even canaries — and load the tree down in multiples of your favourite things. You won’t go wrong. ment you will make, your home? You should remember, too, that when you purchase a warrantied home and then decide to sell it, the remaining warranty is transferable and is a feature that can help in the sale of your home. As said, since 1994 through to the spring of 2007, we appealed to the former Saskatchewan government to adopt homeowner protection legislation and help us foster professionalism, a culture of safety and more compliance with permits, bylaws and health and safety regulations. We even delivered a prepared draft act and regulations to the Committees on Human Services and the Economy. We tried and tried and tried! The Canadian Home Builders’ Association — Saskatchewan believes emphatically in consumer protection, safe workplaces and a professional industry. Maybe with the new excitement and activity, the New West Partnership considerations and a renewed concern for the public interest we can reopen this worthwhile debate. It’s definitely worth having the debate.

sing from engineered wood might be minimal, you must take the proper precautions. Especially if you’re going with MDF — it can have two to four times as much formaldehyde as other types of engineered woods like particleboard. If you’re going to use MDF you must seal it to prevent off-gassing. If it’s properly sealed, off-gassing should be minimal, if not zero. I’ve used MDF on a few recent custom projects and I’m very happy with the final results. Not only does MDF look good, but there’s been virtually no offgassing. Given most people’s budgets MDF is going to stay a popular choice. But it’s not the best choice for environments that are exposed to water. The best way to cut costs with custom wood finishes is to hire professionals to do the job. If you hire someone like a general contractor to build a custom wood finish — such as a shelving unit, kitchen cabinets or crown moulding — they might do a great job, but it’s going to cost more. They don’t have the same advantages of buying materials in bulk as professionals such as kitchen designers or cabinetmakers do. Plus these pros do this day in and day out. They can complete the job in less time with the right tools for their trade.

Pilfer from the poshest houses in the U.K. Iris Benaroia Postmedia News Resplendent, museum-quality homes are collected in James Stourton’s 328-page Great Houses of London (published by Frances Lincoln Publishers, Ltd.), belonging to duchesses, earls and a member of Led Zeppelin. Here are a few tips on how to gild your own home. Inspiration: Small yet staggeringly sumptuous, No. 44 Berkeley Square was built by architect William Kent for Lady Isabella Finch. Its home to the greatest staircase in London and features a triumphant fusion of Rome and Palladio by architect William Kentis. No. 44 is a miniature palace, a terraced house taken to its extremity of grandeur. Tip: For maximum opulence, cover white walls with gold-trimmed damask paper and install gilded light fixtures. Inspiration: Debenham House at 8 Addison Rd. is difficult to miss: glazed iridescent turquoise tiles and riveting white arches make up the Arts & Crafts masterpiece. Built by Jewish-Portuguese architect Halsey Ricardo between 1906 and 1907 for first baronet Ernest Debenham, Ricardo’s love for the flamboyant is reflected in his 1909 Essay in Colour: “Why should we fear to clothe whole streets in London with coloured tiles?” Tip: Make a statement in a powder room or entryway with bright mosaics. Inspiration: Coventry House at No. 106 Piccadilly (formerly No. 29) was built for Sir Hugh Hunloke, who sold it in 1764 to George, sixth Earl of Coventry. The glorious coral and green set against a cream background in the ceiling of the Great Chamber was designed by Robert Adam in the 18th century. The medallions were painted by Antonio Zucchi. Tip: An engaging ceiling draws the eye upwards. Inspiration: A mustard exterior and wide palazzo appearance indicate you’ve arrived at No. 10 Milner St.

The dining room in 1970s French style at 10 Milner St. in Chelsea. No. 10’s interiors are some of the most ingenious and evocative creations of mid-century leading interior designer Michael Inchbald.

Tip: Create a luxury office with a built-in flush bookcase, framed glass case and cornice shelf. Inspiration: An art collector, Sir John Soane’s Museum House in Lincoln’s Inn Fields is filled with thrilling moments, such as a glorious picture room. Tip: A custom skylight and ornate paintings hung gallery-style have a stately presence. Inspiration: Architect William Billy Burges’s Tower House on Melbury Road is a mastery of medieval architecture. Today, Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page owns it. Tip: Build in deep window alcoves to make new-build construction look old and sturdy.

Solutions & Substitutions

Clean your water cooler regularly Reena Nerbas For Postmedia News Q: I own a water cooler that is about 10 years old. I have misplaced the directions for cleaning the inside of my cooler. I seem to remember using a bleach solution to clean the reservoir. Can you give me suggestions please? A: Health Canada recommends that you clean your cooler system after every

bottle change. Begin by disconnecting the unit from the wall. Remove the bottle from the cooler unit. Drain the water through the blue faucet into a bucket. Disconnect any removable parts from the unit. Wash parts thoroughly with dish soap and water. Rinse. If you have a hot and cold dispenser, plug the hot dispenser off using a cork or plug. Doing this prevents sanitizer from getting into the hot tank.

Combine one gallon water and one tablespoon vinegar. With this solution, clean all the interior surfaces of the reservoir. Wait about seven minutes. Fill reservoir full of fresh bottle water and drain the water through the cold faucet. Repeat three times. Remove cork from the hot tank and replace all parts. Plug unit into wall. downsizing

Brownstone living at its modern best Home boasts chic New York vibe Grania Litwin Victoria Times Colonist VICTORIA — Moving six times in eight years is not something Brooke and Joshua Johner would necessarily recommend for any other young couple. But the two executives — both in their mid 30s with careers in banking — managed to do extremely well with their strategy, and today they own a classic townhouse near Cook Street Village in Victoria where they plan to stay. Built by Abstract Developments, their home is part of a six-unit strata complex that includes a basement garage, two middle floors and a spacious loft. “We benefited well from a market rise and made equity gains almost every step of the way,” said Brooke, adding philosophically: “We made money on some homes and broke even on others, but that’s the real world.” Their current home on Chester Avenue in Fairfield (a neighbourhood of Victoria) has a chic, New York vibe with brownstone facade, open-concept main floor, patios and balconies facing both east and west, large skylights and common areas requiring little or no maintenance. There is no lawn to mow or beds to weed. There is also no yard for their threeyear-old Peyton to play in, but this young family has found creative solutions to help her burn off excess energy when not at nearby parks. The open loft has a play area on one side for Peyton, and a three-person lounger and big-screen television on the other for the adults. Peyton has her own small TV for kiddie shows, and two white pleather armchairs on her side of the room, so the family can spend harmonious evenings or rainy Saturdays in the same space. “It’s a bit silly having had six homes already, because you pay Realtor fees and transfer tax every time you buy and sell,” said Brooke, who is a manager at the Royal Bank of Canada. “I wouldn’t necessarily advise people to do this, but it worked for us. We were lucky with the timing.” They stepped onto the first rung of the property ladder soon after they married in 2004. “We bought a condo and sold it a year later, to the day, so we didn’t have to repay our first-time homeowner grant,” said Brooke. “We wanted a single family home, and it was achievable at that point.” They lived in their first house for four years and sold it. On being transferred to Vancouver they took a condo, but after six months had a chance to move back to the Island, where they bought a place on Bear Mountain, but soon decided to build their own home in Royal Bay, Victoria. They managed not

Moving to Cook Street Village was driven by their desire to minimize debt and free up lifestyle opportunities. They wanted to enjoy more family time and fewer chores, and to send their

“Our new townhouse is 1,000 square feet smaller and we don’t miss the space at all.” Joshua Johner daughter to private school. “Our last house was 2,700 square feet, with four bedrooms and a movie theatre, but our daughter didn’t want to hang out in the dark watching football,” said Joshua, a RBC regional manager of residential mortgages for South Vancouver Island. “Our new townhouse is 1,000 square feet smaller and we don’t miss the space at all. Even though they didn’t build this townhouse, it is

very much to their taste and, coincidentally, even the wall colours are the same as in the home they built. “It is a smaller home, but we love the high-end details, which give us a little bit of luxury,” explained Brooke. They appreciate the deluxe stainless-steel appliances, built-in wine fridge, quartz counter tops, soft-touch drawer closures, roughedin alarm, zone-controlled stereo and central vacuum. Other features include an

ethanol burning fireplace with quartz and stainless surround, ensuite washer and dryer, and oversized skylights. “We wanted something we didn’t have to worry about … we have peace of mind here,” she concluded. Joshua explained what attracted them to Fairfield was work-life balance. “Being young professionals, both working full time, with a young daughter. we didn’t want a big yard or a big commute. Yard work at our previous home was taking away from the things we enjoyed doing … and we wanted Peyton spending less time in the back seat of a car.” He believes there are great

opportunities for young people today. “My wife and I have been able to capitalize on that, and found a high-value home at a reasonable price, in one of Victoria’s most desirable neighbourhoods. “Instead of mowing lawns and raking leaves, we walk to our ‘backyard’ in Beacon Hill Park, located along the south shore of Victoria. I think people have to look beyond what they see on CNN or on the front pages of newspapers, and find out what’s happening in their local market.” He urges young families to build up equity and invest within their means. “Run a budget before purchasing a home. Find out what your mortgage might be … put the extra money into a savings account for a few months, find out if it’s comfortable. “Rates right now are at historic lows but although sales are down, prices are still relatively stable. So align yourself with a good Realtor and mortgage expert, sit down and make an educated decision.” Favourite things about his new home include being able to walk to Starbucks, run along the Dallas Road waterfront every morning, or step out for a quart of milk. “We can lock the door and go on vacation without any worries, and there is little or no maintenance. We have family passes to the Y and the Royal B.C. Museum — and we spend much more time with our daughter now.” Mike Miller, of custom home builders Abstract Developments, said the home combines highly efficient living with green elements, quality design and a “fabulous” location. He believes that’s why the brownstones sold out in three months for $599,000 to $639,000. “The property was zoned for apartment building, a high-density zone, but we have found residential single family dwelling townhouses are being well received right now. The idea here was to build fairly narrow, tall, linear row houses with a New York look.” He was also inspired by the “very, very elegant, timeless and simple interiors at the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel in downtown Vancouver.” Miller noted many people today don’t want cars. They want to walk or bike to work, be close to amenities, and not bother with big gardens. “It’s about affordability and lifestyle.” Casey Edge, executive officer at the Canadian Home Builders’ Association of Victoria said in these “challenging times there are a lot more custom homes and renovations happening than spec homes.” “What’s driving housingstart numbers is multi family units, low interest and labour rates — not consumer demand. “Whatever’s going up now is very focused: It has to be in the right location at the right price point. Baby boomers want smaller units and other people are adapting to the economy, adjusting their living environments to accommodate their lifestyle or financial situation.”

uprising

Protesters vow to stop draft constitution President rushes approval BAya Batrawy and Maggie Michael The Associated Press CAIRO — Giant crowds of protesters packed Cairo’s Tahrir Square and marched in other cities Friday vowing to stop a draft constitution that Islamist allies of President Mohammed Morsi approved hours earlier in a rushed, all-night session without the participation of liberals and Christians. A n g e r at M o r s i eve n spilled over into a mosque where the Islamist president joined weekly Friday prayers. In his sermon, the mosque’s preacher compared Morsi to Islam’s Prophet Muhammad, saying the prophet had enjoyed vast powers as leader, giving a precedent for the same to happen now. “No to tyranny!” congregants chanted, interrupting the cleric. Morsi took to the podium and told the worshippers that he too objected to the language of the sheik and that one-man rule contradicts Islam. Crowds of protesters marched from several locations in Cairo, converging in central Tahrir Square for the opposition’s second mass rally in a week against Morsi. They chanted, “Constitu-

The Associated Press

Liberal and secular protesters gather in Tahrir Square Friday against Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi’s latest decrees granting himself almost complete powers and allowing a rushed constitution to be presented for a vote. tion: Void!” and “The people want to bring down the regime” as fireworks went off. The crowd appeared comparable in size to the more than 200,000 anti-Morsi protesters who thronged Tahrir Tuesday. Tens of thousands more marched Friday in Alexandria and other cities. In contrast to the largely leaderless uprising by youth activists against autocrat Hosni Mubarak last year, a more energized, cohesive leadership has started to emerge in the new campaign

against Morsi, Egypt’s first freely elected president. It is made up of a number of prominent liberal, secular and moderate Islamist politicians, notably reform advocate Mohamed ElBaradei. “We are determined to continue with all peaceful means, whatever it takes to defend our legitimate rights,” ElBaradei told the Tahrir crowd, saying the draft constitution must be voided. His ally, senior opposition leader Hamdeen Sabbahi,

vowed protests would go on until “we topple the constitution.” “The revolution is back ... We shall be victorious,” said Sabbahi, a liberal politician who came in a surprisingly close third in last summer’s presidential election. “We are united against the oppressive regime.” The protests were sparked by the president’s decrees a week ago granting himself sweeping powers and neutralizing the judiciary, the last check on his authority.

The edicts tapped into a feeling among many Egyptians that Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood, from which he hails, are using their election victories to monopolize power and set up a new oneparty state, nearly two years after the fall of autocrat Hosni Mubarak. But the sudden adoption of a draft constitution by the Islamist-dominated assembly tasked with producing the document throws the confrontation into a new phase.

The draft must now be put to a nationwide referendum for public approval, likely to be held in mid-December. Morsi is expected on Saturday to announce the date. He says his new powers are in effect until the referendum passes. The opposition appeared deter mined to launch a street campaign aimed at blocking the document from coming to a referendum. They are also counting on a revolt by the judiciary, where opposition to Morsi’s edicts runs strong. The Supreme constitutional Court is to rule on Sunday whether to dissolve the constitutional assembly. If it does so, the effect on the draft already adopted by the assembly is unclear. In part it may be a question of whose legitimacy is stronger and whose public support is larger. If the charter does come to a referendum, the opposition is faced with the choice of boycotting in protest or trying to rally the public to vote to reject the draft. In every scenario, Egypt’s most polarizing and volatile crisis since Mubarak’s ouster is likely to deepen. The past week, clashes between Morsi’s supporters and opponents left two dead and hundreds wounded and raised fears of further chaos. The Brotherhood and other Islamists plan their own massive rally backing Morsi on Saturday. Already on Friday, Brotherhood activists were passing out flyers calling for the public to come out and “support Islamic law.”

But the family, who returned to Egypt from Montreal 10 years ago, could not bear to stay at home after an Islamist-dominated constitutional assembly hastily passed a new constitution late Thursday that among things requires that the government reflect “the true nature” of Egyptian society. That is why the family was in the thick of it in Tahrir Square Friday with about 100,000 other secularist protesters demanding that Mohammed Morsi give up the presidency he narrowly won exactly five months ago, ending six decades of military dictatorship. The problem with references such as “the true nature” of Egyptian society is that they underline the ruling Muslim Brotherhood’s conservative Islamic philosophy and bring to the surface long-standing cultural and religious fissures in the most populous Arab country. Egypt is a country where, for example, many women cover themselves in black garb from their heads to their toes while many others dress as women in Europe or North America do. Although both the old and new constitutions state that Egypt must be governed by “Islamist principles,” this means one thing to Islamic fundamentalists and something else to secularists. Another clause that is open to interpretation states that women, but not men, must balance their duties between home and work. A third declares that clerics at a respected Sunni mosque in Cairo must be consulted on legislation concerning Islamic sharia. It is a debate being played out across the Middle East since the Arab Spring convulsed the region in the win-

More than 100,000 Egyptians attended a demonstration in Tahrir Square in Cairo on Friday. ter of 2011. But nowhere is the difference of opinion between Islamists and secularists more obvious or sharpedged than in Egypt, where the two camps are almost equally split in popular support. “We are at a crossroads and we will not let Egypt be dominated by Islamist fascists,” said Moussa, who is a pharmacist. “We will not let them destroy our country. That will happen over our dead bodies. If we back down now, we go back to the Dark Ages.” With Egypt deeply divided, a national strike called by secularists for next Tuesday and competing demonstrations in prospect for the foreseeable future, there is a real possibility that if there is a miscalculation by either side the standoff could, in a flash, become violent. “There are people who fear this, but we have to do what we are doing,” said Ali, who was educated as a teacher. Also standing angrily Friday in the same drab, crowded roundabout that has already been the scene of so much high drama during Egypt’s sometimes bloody struggle to overthrow Hosni

Mubarak and his military regime in 2011, was Hanna Abdel-Fahah, who works as an administrator. “The Islamist’s view is that they have already compromised on the constitution, but that is not how others see it,” Abdel-Fahah said. “The new constitution still gives Morsi sweeping powers. So we must try to limit his authority.” As for the prospect of violence, she dismissed that by saying “we are not barbarians. If there has not been violence until now there won’t be.” Phar macy student Mohamad Gaber warned that “if Morsi does not change, we will change him.” But he said the Morsi gover nment had already blinked by transferring a planned rally of its supporters Saturday away from Tahrir Square. He took this as a sign that “people will not allow this to reach a violent stage.” However, that is not how Cairo felt Thursday when mobs of young men hurled stones and caused panic to pedestrians and drivers on a Nile River embankment near Tahrir Square in an apparent attempt to goad the

police into attacking them. Some western commentators have wondered whether Morsi had been emboldened to issue a decree increasing his powers after receiving praise last week for arranging a ceasefire between Israel and Palestinians over Gaza. However, few Cairenes saw any connection. They said the goal of Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood for some time had been to give greater powers to the president. The increasing polarization of Egyptian politics and the severe effect the political upheaval had had on the Egyptian economy had Ali thinking it might be for the best for her family to resume their lives in Quebec. But her husband, Moussa was strongly opposed to this idea. “We don’t want to run,” he said. “To face fascists takes courage. We want to change Egypt with our hands and our hearts. We still have many cards to play without resorting to violence such as strikes. “I love my country but I love Canada, too, because it has social equality. I want what Canada has to be copied here.”

JERUSALEM — Israel approved the construction of 3,000 homes in Jewish settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, a government official said Friday, in what appeared to be a defiant response to the Palestinians’ successful United Nations recognition bid. The Palestinians strongly condemned the announcement and repeated their refusal to start peace negotiations while building continued. With Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu apparently poised for re-election and insisting that any negotiations begin without preconditions, prospects for peace appear to be going into deep freeze. The unusually large building plan came a day after the United Nations voted overwhelmingly to accept “Palestine” in the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem as a non-member observer state, setting off

jubilant celebrations among Palestinians. Israel fiercely objected to the UN upgrade, saying peace could only come from direct negotiations and unilateral moves would harm that prospect. The Palestinians said the UN recognition of a Palestinian state in the territories captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war was an attempt to salvage a possible peace deal and could bolster talks. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has refused to negotiate with Israeli while settlement construction continues in occupied territories, saying Israel’s settlement expansion on war-won land was making a partition deal increasingly difficult. Prior to word of the Israeli decision, Abbas spokesman Nabil Abu Rdeneh insisted that position hadn’t changed, saying settlement building “is not just illegal, it’s against the resolution.” More than 500,000 Israelis have moved to the West Bank and East Jerusalem since Israel captured those territories and Gaza in 1967.

Canadian aid to Palestinians may be axed after UN vote OTTAWA (The Canadian Press) — The federal government will not cut diplomatic relations with the Palestinians in response to their newly won recognition from the United Nations, but future aid funding could be on the chopping block. Canada’s $300 million in aid spending to the Palestinians is under review, as Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird readies himself for meetings in Ottawa next week with his senior diplomats from Israel, the West Bank and the UN missions in New York and Geneva. The Palestinian aid money goes toward strengthening its justice system, private sector economic development, and health and education assistance. The Harper government has made it clear, both pri-

vately and publicly, that the Palestinians would face repercussions for their pursuit of statehood. The two most obvious options are severing diplomatic ties and suspending aid contributions to the Palestinian Authority. “Canada is deeply disappointed but not surprised by yesterday’s result at the United Nations General Assembly,” Baird said in a statement. “Canada will now review the full range of its bilateral relationship with the Palestinian Authority.” Despite Friday’s diplomatic recall, sources say Baird isn’t planning to tell the Palestinian delegation in Ottawa to abandon its mission. The Harper government has a track record using both diplomatic tools.
