Winter can inspire indoors year-round Cool shades, shimmering textures Melissa Rayworth THE ASSOCIATED PRESS It’s cold out there. In much of the country, now’s the time when home serves as a cosy refuge from the ice and snow. We light our fireplaces and wish for springtime. But what if we took the opposite approach, using the inspiration of frosty winter colours and shimmering, icy textures to create rooms that look gorgeous year-round? A winter-inspired room can celebrate the beauty of this season, and also provide a cooling refuge perfect for the spring and summer ahead. “My clients usually think I’ve lost my mind when I suggest using winter as a source of inspiration for a cosy bedroom,” says de-

Brian Patrick Flynn

Brian Patrick Flynn suggests mixing shades of white along with blue-greys to achieve a well-balanced, wintry look. Burnham Design

A bedroom designed by Betsy Burnham, with walls of pure white and frosty blue complemented by a fluffy snow-white flokati rug. signer Brian Patrick Flynn, founder of decordemon. com. But, the designer says, “when done right, a combination of layered whites, blue-greys and touches of metallic can add a wintry look that’s chic, inviting,

surprisingly warm and totally timeless.” Here, Flynn and two other interior designers — Betsy Burnham of Los Angeles’ Burnham Design and Kyle Schuneman of Live Well Designs — offer advice on using winter as a decorat-

ing inspiration.

Get Reflective Start with the reflective sheen of ice as your main inspiration, says Flynn. “Use a plethora of reflective surfaces and metallic

touches,” he says, including mirrored accent tables and nightstands, as well as mirrored lamps. Flynn and Schuneman both recommend metallic wallpaper. “One bedroom I designed in California was completely inspired by Candice Olsen’s birch bark wallpaper from York Wallcovering,” Flynn says. “The paper is made from

white-toned birch bark, and has a metallic backing which just screams ‘winter chic.’” If you’d prefer painted walls, Schuneman suggests choosing a shade of pale grey or icy blue and buying it in two different finishes — one with a high sheen that almost looks metallic and the other matte.

Can’t step away until job is done; this one’s not over MIKE HOLMES Make it Right

People are always asking me: “Mike, aren’t you tired of dealing with the same problems over and over again?” You know what I say? I might be tired of seeing the same problems. But I’m not tired of trying to make things right. That’s what pushes me every day. It’s what pushes all the good guys. Why do I still care after 10 years on the job? Because I know that the work I do, my crew does, and

everyone else who pulls through for desperate families — job after job — makes a real difference to the people we help. Home is where the heart is. That’s not just a saying. Your home is supposed to be the safest place in the world — for you and your family. And when I see homes that are anything but safe it’s hard for me to walk away. It’s a battle every time. How do I help everyone? I’m just one guy. So I try to focus on the bigger picture — the things that if I help change will make the biggest impact on the most people. Look at First Nations housing. This is an area that can have huge implications for how we build sustainably and efficiently — in response to different environments and living conditions.

Researching new “green” products and energy-efficient technologies is another way we’re building a better future in housing. We’re seeing what works, getting rid of what doesn’t, and bringing in the right people to do something that will change the industry for the better. Let’s look at improving code and regulations, and also into changing the rules so a contractor can’t legally walk away from a job and screw a family over. Good contractors don’t walk away from a job and leave homeowners helpless. We have a work ethic that doesn’t let us do that. We care. Why? Because we don’t see what we do as a job. We see it as a skill, a duty. And every time a contractor doesn’t do what they say they’re going to do, they’re not just disrespecting the

homeowner. They’re disrespecting their work and the industry. What can you do as a homeowner? Care about your home and the people it affects, including the neighbours. Do your research. Ask the right questions. If you have a leak, get a professional to come in, find the source and fix it. Don’t hire anyone that doesn’t have the right certifications and credentials to do the job you’re hiring them to do. Don’t accept cash jobs. Every time you do you’re putting yourself and your family in a vulnerable position. You need to be smart. If there’s pooling on your property it’s a grading issue. Get a landscaper to look at it. If you’re losing heaps of heat, find out why and address the problem. Invest in a proper roof; it’s your home’s first line

of defence. And make sure the air your family breathes inside your home is safe and clean. That means looking into low-VOC products and materials and better air filters. Get a professional to do a mould test if you think mould might be an issue. Remember: You get what you give every single time. If anyone told me I would still be doing this after 10 years I wouldn’t have believed them. I figured after two years I’d be done and go back to being a regular contractor. But things didn’t turn out that way. Why not? Because I can’t step away from a job until it’s done — and this job is far from over. It seems to get bigger every day. But when your heart’s in the right place, it’s easy to do what’s right. And I can’t imagine doing anything else.

Winter Range of colours Continued from F1 Paint the walls with alternating stripes of each finish. This use of just a few metallic or mirrored items is a great way to bring in some icy glamour, Schuneman says, “without it becoming the ‘ice princess’ dungeon.” Mirrored and metallic items also maximize light, warming a room even in winter. “Since trees lose their leaves in the winter, the amount of light that streams in through the window can be double the amount in the spring or summer,” Flynn says. “By the time that gorgeous light hits the reflective surfaces and metallics, the room instantly warms up.” Burnham also likes mirrored items. A mirrored table “adds a dimension to a room that wood just doesn’t,” she says. But she cautions against taking the look too far. If you’re buying mirrored end tables, she says, put a ceramic lamp on top rather than a mirrored or glass lamp. Or mix mirrors and chrome with warm shades of ivory, rather than stark whites.

Use A Range of Colours “The biggest trick to doing a wintry palette right is to layer, layer, layer,” Flynn says. “I like to stick with an overall white palette, but bring in ultra-white, off-white, cream, blue-white and then add touches of blue-grey. This makes a space soothing and sophisticated, while adding depth.” Burnham’s favourite wintry wall colour right now is a shade called Silver Spoon by Dunn-Edwards. “It’s a really, really pale greyblue, and I cannot tell you how many rooms I’ve used it in,” she says. It contrasts well with white for a modern look or with warm shades of brown for a more “organic and earthy” feel. Schuneman loves mixing wintry whites, silvers and greys accented with shades of purple. Or he sometimes pairs “a grey that has blue as its base, and a blue that has grey in its base” and brings in “hard edges, like crystal lamps” for a chic, “wintry feeling.”

Burnham Design

A living room designed by Betsy Burnham contrasts icy blue walls and white accents with charcoal grey and black for winter-inspired style. “First and foremost, I let my client know that just because we’re going wintry, it doesn’t mean we’re going to pop out igloos, snowflakes and polar bears. “In other words, we completely avoid themes and cliches altogether.” Instead, he says, “we just think of different ways to use whites, greys, metallics and textures in a manner which fits their personal style and makes a room feel airy and open. That’s usually my trick to getting winter-inspired design right.”

of it as “the thing that gives a room an edge.” In Southern California or other warm locations, Burnham says, it may work best to mix winter-inspired items with something more reminiscent of the local weather. “Think of a beautiful driftwood table with something sparkly on it. That brings it back to the sand and the beach, and keeps it relatable” to your warm-weather location, but also includes a bit of icy beauty, she says.

Balance Icy With Cosy Along with shimmery, mirrored surfaces, be sure to include soft, cosy ones: Look for “beautiful cable-knit cashmere throws,” Burnham says, or “a big faux-fur coyote blanket on a bed. It’s wintry, but it’s also so luxe, so high-end hunting lodge, and that works at the beach, too.” Layers of soft fabric on furniture and floors bring a welcome feeling of warmth. If you choose a “fluffy, white flokati rug for the floor, you’re still having a kind of wintry moment,” Schuneman says, “but it’s just not hard-edged.”

Winter-inspired design can work in any climate, from a Vermont ski house to a California beach condo. “I did a bedroom in the Hollywood Hills with icy blue walls, and the headboard wall was all metal ceiling tiles,” Schuneman says. For the bedside tables, he chose pale blue glass lamps that resemble melting chunks of ice. “You can really go for it” and do a full-on winter-inspired style, Schuneman says, or use just touches

Energy efficiency in homes — a Regina success story

Search for scrap centre, or donate old Christmas lights

Stu Niebergall No one is going to be surprised to read that a newly built home is more energy efficient than an older home. When I make that claim, what may come to mind is the image of a wood home, built 80 to 100 years ago, with its drafty windows and often wood chip insulation. It is most likely not a big stretch for you to agree that there is no comparison between that old home and a new home, when it comes to energy efficiency. It does make me wonder how surprised you might be at how much more energy efficient a newly built home is today, compared to one even built less than 40 years ago. Comparing similar square footage, a new home built in 2012 would use about one-third as much energy as a home built in the mid 1970s. The energy efficiency of homes has seen significant continuous improvement for more than three decades. In 2010, there were 35 per cent more homes in Canada than in 1990, but emissions of greenhouse gases from all houses had fallen by nearly 8.5 per cent; a real achievement. In Saskatchewan, the story is even better with GHG emissions falling in the housing sector an amazing 17.3 per cent, despite the fact that we had 6.9 per cent more homes in the province. In Regina we are the leaders in the country of homes built under the Energy Star and R-2000 labels. How do energy savings translate into cost savings for homeowners? Let’s say you are in a home built in 1975 and from an energy efficiency perspective, it is still as it was when it was first built. Analysis shows that home would typi-

cally consume 7,498 m3 of natural gas. The 2012 version of the same home would require just 1,695 m3 of natural gas. Although results may vary due to fluctuations in gas rates, the annual savings to the homeowner just on natural gas is approximately $1,390. That just applies to a home built to today’s building code. A home built under Energy Star or R-2000 specifications would see a significantly better return. How have these results occurred? This remarkable success came about in a distinctly Canadian way. New Home Builders and Professional Renovators have for over 30 years, brought a host of innovations to their customers, saving energy and providing a healthier, more comfortable living environment. In part, the home building industry has been able to innovate because the federal government has invested in, and supported, housing research and development suited to Canada’s unique climate. Through the efforts of Natural Resources Canada, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and Canada’s National Research Council, our nation is recognized as a world leader in housing R&D. One example of success is how much progress we have made in dealing with the issue of air leakage in homes. Air leakage through a home’s exterior can be a major source of energy and heat loss. Let’s go back to a typical home that was built in 1975. If all of the holes, cracks and seams in the typical home built in 1975 were brought together, they would add up to 350 square inches in diameter. In the same home built to our current building code, the air leakage would be reduced by more than two thirds. How much should the average new homebuyer invest in the energy efficiency of their new home over and above the cost of build-

ing to the building code? That is a difficult question to answer and my response to that question will invoke lots of opinions on this; but I will tell you what research in the U.S. market has suggested. Five per cent of the cost of the new home should be spent on improving energy efficiency above standard features that just meet the building code. Five per cent of the price of the home represents the apex of where there is a midterm return on your investment to upgrade the efficiency of that home. If you are thinking of purchasing a new home and want some expert advice on the energy efficiency of a newly built home, go to www.reginahomebuilders.com and under the online Member Finder, browse by category ‘Energy Star Builders’. As I mentioned earlier, Regina is the leader in Energy Star new home building in Canada. Stu Niebergall is president and CEO of the Regina & Region Home Builders’ Association. s.niebergall @reginahomebuilders.com

Reena Nerbas For Leader-Post Q: I have some old (dead) Christmas lights that I would like to recycle. I know that the copper wire is valuable, but if there isn’t a place that will pay for them, I would just like to find a place that will recycle them as I don’t just want to put them in the garbage. A: Search online or in the Yellow Pages for places that buy and sell copper in your area, such as scrap metal yards or metal recycling centres. Depending on the type of lights you own, you can take a small work knife or an old paring knife and carefully strip the plastic from the wire so the wire’s ready to be sold or recycled. Another option is to donate your Christmas lights (intact) just as you would old clothes. Home Depot, for instance, runs a recycling program for Christmas lighting. Also, some provinces run light recycling programs. Look for them through a Google search. Q: I have burnt a pot very badly. I cannot remove the black from the bottom. How do I clean it? A: Soak the pan with dishwash-

er detergent and hot water for a couple of hours, scrub with a steel wool pad. Or (and this is what I like to do), into your pot pour baking soda, dish soap and enough water to cover the bottom. Boil the contents for five minutes. Let sit just until cool enough to handle and scrub with an abrasive soap pad. Some people use oven cleaner for this purpose and leave it overnight, but I prefer baking soda. Q: How I can get mould off the white rubber seal around our fridge door? I am not sure if someone tried to remove the mould before, so I don’t know if any cleaning products have been used. A: Sounds like you need to begin by checking to see if the seal needs replacing. You should not be able to slide a piece of paper between the rubber seal and the wall of the refrigerator (or freezer). If the piece of paper slips between the seal and the wall, the seal is not tight enough and the gasket requires replacement. To clean the seal, combine five drops tea tree oil, and white vinegar. Spray and scrub. I enjoy your questions and tips, keep them coming. Follow me on Twitter or website reena.ca.
