Break the bedroom rules
REG00192656_1_1
Challenge traditional design conventions MELISSA RAYWORTH THE ASSOCIATED PRESS We’re told a well-designed master bedroom should be an oasis of romantic calm. It’s also supposed to be the practical place where you store clothing and get a good night’s sleep, and it may also be where you watch television, pay bills and even set up a home office. That’s a lot to ask of a single room. On the bright side, says interior designer Brian Patrick Flynn, you have plenty of decorating freedom. “Since bedrooms are all about selfexpression and comforts,” he says, “you can break the rules as much as you want.” We’ve asked Flynn, founder of Flynnside Out Productions, and two other design experts — Betsy Burnham
of Bur nham Design and Molly Luetkemeyer of M. Design Interiors — for tips on breaking those rules with style to create the ultimate master bedroom.
Calm colours Forg et trendy shades or your favourite bright colours. Burnham advises sticking to a soothing palette of ivory and white, evoking a luxury hotel room. “You can layer colour into that if you want to,” she says. If your idea of peace and quiet involves deeper colours, Flynn suggests navy blues or black-brown tones. And if you really want bolder colour or patterns, Luetkemeyer recommends using a single pattern throughout your bedroom.

Brian Patrick Flynn replaced small windows with tall French doors which open to a deck, instantly turning what was a lacklustre space into a relaxing retreat. To capitalize on the light, Flynn painted the walls and ceiling with a faint shade of blush in an eggshell finish.

MAKE IT RIGHT
When it comes to your deck, size matters MIKE HOLMES Make it Right
The ultimate deck isn’t just about the deck itself. It’s about design, where you’re putting the deck, privacy, material and what’s going on the deck. I like a nice, low deck. Something that ties into the landscaping. Less stairs, less worries about safety — makes sense. We should definitely be using pressure-treated wood for the structure, which you can clad over with something like cedar. It’s an inexpensive way of getting the look you want, as well as using a product that lasts a long time. You have a couple of choices for the cladding. Personally, I like cedar. Unfortunately, it is very expensive. And if you use cedar you have to seal it every two years, as a minimum, to keep that wonderful cedar look and smell. Otherwise, it’s going to turn grey like any other piece of wood. You can also use composite wood, Trex, or a manmade product for the cladding, which works very well — lasts a long time. You can even buy a composite that looks like cedar. That works
THE HOLMES GROUP
Building the ultimate deck comes down to design, location, privacy, material and how it will be used. So go big or go home. And take time to plan it right. for me. Installation is going to be key. I’ve seen a lot of these products use plastic clips to screw it down — that’s an absolute no-no. The plastic tends to break. I would like to see a stainless steel clip. It will last longer. Now, do you make a small deck or do you make a big deck? We always say it: Go big or go home. There’s no sense in doing it small if you’re going to do it right the first time. Make it big. Size does matter! You can also have differ-
ent tiers. To me the ultimate is three tiers. One tier is the party/entertaining area — it’s the big area. The second area tiered-down would be the dining area. Your third area could be the relaxation area that has chairs or a couch. And plan it. I remember doing my garage and it took me three months to plan just how it was going to look — never mind what the inside was going to be. So this is your opportunity to make the ultimate deck by taking your time
and thinking about it. What do we like to do on a deck? We like to entertain. So you’ve got to have a barbecue area. And also, doesn’t that mean you should have a bar area? For the big guys out there — the men of the world — we want a bar. And this is something you can incorporate. You can get a temporary bar that you take in and out for the season. You can put it away for the winter, in the garage or shed. Or you can have a built-in bar, and
kitchen area with a barbecue — now that’s the ultimate! By adding a bar, you get a seating area with bar stools — a nice U-shape or L-shape area that has a barbecue, sink, bar and fridge. Also, you must have the relaxing area. It’s not just about the dining. It’s about … the hammock! Find a place for a hammock, because that’s the area you’re going to need after you’ve eaten and had a few drinks at the bar area. Next, think about privacy.
Having privacy walls are great but what happens if you have 20 people over and it starts to rain? Add a nice covered area. That serves a few purposes: It protects you from the rain, provides shade and privacy, and it gives you a place to install lighting, so your deck can be lit from the top down, which looks great at night. And let’s not forget some accessories. All of the lighting on my deck is LED because they don’t use a lot of energy and they last. If you want to add a fire pit it should be propane or gas. You will need to check your local building code to see whether or not you’re allowed to have a wood-burning fire pit. In most cases, you are not. And don’t forget to check whether or not you need permits for your deck. That will be based on your deck height; whether or not it’s attached to the house; the utilities you will need to run, like plumbing, gas and electricity; and how close to the property line you have to go. Cover all your bases and you will have a home run. Remember: Take your time, plan it right and build it right, so you don’t have to call me to fix it. Bedrooms Cocoon away from the world CONTINUED FROM F1 This “en suite” look involves using the same fabric for curtains and bedspread, and even covering the walls in the same pattern. “Even a busy pattern won’t feel too chaotic if you’re consistent,” in using it throughout the room, she says.
Big beds in small rooms Think your medium-size or small bedroom can’t handle a gorgeous four-poster bed? Bur nham says a bed like that can serve as “a statement piece” that brings lots of style. It actually frees up space, because you won’t need any extra, decorative pieces of furniture for pizzazz. Flynn agrees, as long as the bedroom isn’t extremely small and the nightstands are in proportion. One of his pet peeves is a large bed flanked by tiny tables, which can make the tables look like they belong in a dollhouse.
Soften everything These designers are seeing a trend toward upholstered beds and headboards, and even upholstery fabric used on walls. “It’s this idea that you’re being completely cocooned and buffered from the world,” Luetkemeyer says. For some clients, she has also upholstered the inside of armoires or other storage pieces to create a complete sense of softness. With softness in mind, Flynn suggests using more than one layer of window treatment: “I usually layer blackout shades with custom, pleated drapery panels,” he
ZEKE RUELAS/The Associated Press
Four poster beds, while beloved by many homeowners, are tricky to get right. Before falling in love with the idea, it’s imperative to first ensure there’s at least 56 inches of space left in front of the bed for proper traffic flow and a possible TV console. says. “This softens the hard edges of the room, helps with noise control and also allows the homeowner to sleep in as late as they want.” If you’re worried that all that softness will make the room too feminine, Burnham suggests adding just a few sharper, cleaner lines for balance. Choose sleek, mid-century vintage lamps to place on either side of an upholstered bed. Or opt for a dresser with simple, clean lines rather than a piece that’s ornate and curvy.
er adds, “ ‘and I want to have one place where it’s really mine.’ ” Burnham sees the beginnings of a similar trend, though for many people the habit of checking email in bed or watching TV before they go to sleep is a hard one to kick. If you have a desk in your bedroom, consider relocating it. And try plugging in your phone and other gadgets somewhere else in your home at night so you won’t be tempted to check them.
Banish electronics
Skip nightstands
It may sound radical, but Luetkemeyer hears from clients now that they’re ready to remove the TV and all gadgets from their bedrooms. “People are saying, ‘I’m in such overload all day long, and I’m reachable within an inch of myself,’ ” Luetkemey-
F lynn suggests using 30-inch-tall dressers or chests instead of traditional nightstands: “I’ll hit up flea markets and find two different chests with very similar proportions,” he says, using these less expensive pieces to flank a more expensive custom

headboard or platform bed. Luetkemeyer agrees that closed storage at bedside is a wise move for most people. It keeps necessities handy, but hides clutter to make your sleeping area look organized even when it isn’t.
Pendants and sconces instead of table lamps Chandeliers are often used in dining rooms and entryways to add glamour and drama. Flynn’s tip? They “work just as well in bedrooms.” “I often install pendant lights over nightstands instead of using table lamps,” he says, “especially if the headboard is tall and dramatic. Whenever possible, I try to use sculptural pendants which introduce interesting shapes to the room and I always, 100 per cent of the time, install them on dimmers.”

Hefty chests and dressers next to beds rather than small night stands can store more. Design-wise, they are more interesting than nightstands. Flynn suggests chests as an alternative due to their scale, especially in bedrooms with tall headboards.

Make a splash with your own backyard pool LISA EVANS POSTMEDIA NEWS Nothing is more refreshing on a hot, summer day than a dip in the pool. If having your own backyard pool appeals to you, there are a few things to consider before you dive in:
Timing Ideally, you should start looking for a company in early spring as the season for installation is very short. But while you might have to wait until next year to get yours installed, now’s a great time to think about what kind of pool you want.
Type of pool Above-ground pools are certainly cheaper, but they can detract from a home’s l a n d s c ap i n g , wh i l e i n ground pools can make your backyard feel like a resort. If you go the in-ground route, you’ll need to choose between steel and polymer. Although steel used to be the preferred material for intricate shapes, Dave McNaughton of Mermaid Pools and Hot Tubs in Ottawa, says polymer pools have evolved and can now be designed in free-form shapes. Polymers have a longer warranty than steel and a stronger structure, making them the preferred choice of many pool owners, although they cost about 10 per cent more than a steel pool.
Salt or chlorine? Saltwater pools are all the rage. “The bathing and swimming experience is f ar superior and over time you will save on costs and maintenance,” says McNaughton. You may remember from high-school chemistry that chlorine is a byproduct of
Now is a good time to plan your pool type, design and any features. Costs can be substantial — and consider the ongoing maintenance. saltwater. Although chlorine is present in a saltwater pool, the levels are low, so it won’t sting your eyes or smell the way a chlorinated pool does. Salt is also safer on skin and hair and won’t fade your swimsuit, but McNaughton points out that saltwater pools are only available in polymer, since salt causes steel to corrode. Saltwater pools can result in cost savings. The amount
of salt added depends on the amount of rain and waterloss due to splashing or draining of water, but salt never disappears from the water once it’s there, meaning despite the higher upfront cost, you’ll save in the long run.
Consider maintenance Pool maintenance is often cited as the most expensive part of pool ownership, although McNaughton says
improvements in technology have reduced the cost and time spent maintaining pools. He recommends a cartridge filtration system, that typically requires cleaning once or twice a season, rather than sand filters, which are cleaned every week or two. Remember to keep up with regular water testing as required by your pool’s warranty. “If you don’t balance your
water, you can damage pool equipment,” invalidating your manufacturer’s warranty, says McNaughton.
Cost The cost of a pool can be substantial. Design and construction makes in-ground pools more expensive to build with the cost starting at about $20,000 for a threemetre by six-metre steel pool. Above-ground pools are more economical and
can run you from $4,000 to $12,000. The type of soil in your area may also affect costs. Rocky soil may be more expensive to excavate, for example, in which case a better choice may be a semiin-ground pool to reduce excavation costs.

The Serpentine sink, 1981, created by artist Jan Axel from slip-cast vitreous china with glaze. Axel created the sink during a residency at Kohler Co. in Kohler, Wis., Artists who visited Kohler during a clay exhibition were hungry for access to the factory’s m o u l d s and other resources, and eager to learn the Jan techniques Axel used by craftsmen working there, she said. There was little interaction between the worlds of fine art and manufacturing at the time. Kohler convinced her brother, Kohler Co., chairman and CEO Herb Kohler Jr., to let two artists work at the factory for a month. “They created all these fanciful things with the plumbing products,” she recalled. “So, for example, they took a urinal, turned it on its back, added some clay wheels and filled it full of clay teeth and called it

a real hood fan to absorb smells and steam. Do you spend more time cooking or baking? Your answer could affect whether an electric or gas oven is best for you. Also, think about the size of the oven. If you like to host big turkey dinners, for instance, get an oven that will hold your bird. There are many other nifty appliances to consider if you have the space. Would a warming drawer be useful to keep food, dishes and mugs warm for company, or would you end up using it as a storage drawer? Another option is a cup-warming drawer be-

neath your coffee maker. Frequent hosts may also like the idea of a wine fridge or a second dishwasher. No room for two dishwashers? Maybe there is enough for a half dishwasher instead. A trend I have started noticing is below-counter microwaves to save counter space and streamline the overall look, as well as microwave drawers. Though new and popular, remember that these drawers have to be pushed closed, creating a potential for spills. Whatever appliances you choose, make sure they represent your living needs. Purchasing appliances for resale or to please others will mean you live with wasted space in limited square footage.
“WHAT WILL MAKE YOUR KITCHEN MORE FUNCTIONAL, USER-FRIENDLY AND ENJOYABLE?”

MILWAUKEE — The Kohler sink in your bathroom may be more of a work of art than you realize. The company known for kitchen and bathroom fixtures has opened its factory floor to artists for the past 40 years, allowing them to share ideas and techniques with factory workers so that both can be inspired. Three artists have created pieces produced by Kohler Co., and many more have gone on to design for other companies. The program, celebrating its 40th anniversary, is notable for its longevity and impact on the arts world, said Larry Bush, a ceramics professor at the R h o d e Island School of Design. Molly Kohler is Hatch unique in letting artists work on the factory floor with employees and providing equipment to create work on a massive scale, he said. “The sort of thing that people can do at the Kohler factory has inspired a lot of work beyond the Kohler factory,” Bush said. Ruth DeYoung Kohler — a print maker, former teacher and granddaughter of Kohler Co., founder John Michael Kohler — created the Arts/Industry program at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center soon after taking over as director in 1972.
the Tooth Fairy Wagon. And then they took two toilets and put them back to back ... and they turned it into a rocket ship.” The project so captivated Kohler workers that the artists were invited back for another month in late 1974. Since then, more than 400 artists have completed residencies lasting up to six months. A retrospective of their work is on display through Aug. 31 at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, about an hour north of Milwaukee. Jan Axel, who completed two residencies at Kohler in 1979 and 1981, created a sink carved with undulating lines, and the company later produced it commercially. Axel went on to create a program that brought artists to Kohler to embellish plumbing fixtures for sale. Such collaboration was radical at the time. “It was sort of ‘not done’ because people wanted to be considered artists. They didn’t want to be designers,” said Axel, of South Salem, N.Y., who went on to do product and landscape design. Molly Hatch, a ceramics artist from Northampton, Mass., said her 2009 residency gave her a new career designing tableware for Anthropologie, and stationery and fabrics for other companies. Hatch said that learning to use liquid clay and moulds at Kohler allowed her to create pieces with a consistency she couldn’t achieve by hand. At the same time, she was struck by the amount of handcrafting done at Kohler, and she now creates products that combine mass production and a personal touch.

Ever hear the saying the devil is in the details? When it comes to your new condo, that’s certainly true. And if you can properly accessorize, the excitement, rather than the devil, can occupy your details. Many condo buyers want to make their lives easier. Those who have been renters until now may be happy with whatever appliances are included. Downsizers may also be just as happy with these appliances, as they are new and will mean a fresh start. But don’t fall into the trap of just assuming that whatever appliances are included will be sufficient. Instead, comb over the model suites with care and consider upgrading appliances that you will use often or get more joy out of using. Whether you are an aspiring gourmet chef or merely combine cereal and milk in the morning, you likely spend considerable time in your kitchen. So, what will make your kitchen more functional, user-friendly and enjoyable? Here are a few appliances worthy of consideration, depending on your personal use of the kitchen. If you’re a chef, you will want several key appliances. The first is a good hood fan, something that will keep your condo smoke-free but will not be too loud, given that noise is more concentrated over smaller floor plans. Be wary of the microwave-hood fan that sits over your stove and is often featured in model suites. This combo is fine if you don’t cook much but, if you do, you’ll find you will need
