So she went online and found a wall decal — roosting love birds on a branch. “I love them. It adds some individuality,” said Wright, who also has used decals in other parts of her home on Kiawah Island, in S.C. Wall decals have taken off as an easy, affordable a n d t e m p o r a r y w ay t o transform a room, said interior designer Darla Blake of Unique & Chic Interiors in Irvine, Calif. The flexible vinyl decals come in dozens of colours and hundreds of designs, everything from animals and music notes

Pastels pack plenty of personality Shari Kulha Postmedia News After two years of being told bold oranges, bright greens and kitschy neons are great ways to brighten our homes, the time seems ideal for a softer, easier entry into the spring and summer season. With the economy still pondering its own fate and a weary, overworked populace constantly punching cold, hard keyboards, maybe it’s time to rethink our aversion to pastels. We need our homes to be war mer, comfier landing places, and maybe brighter and cheerier than ever. These new pastel hues can help, whether they’re used in small, unexpected places in a vast mix of shades or just one colour on all the surfaces of a room. The anti-pastel faction in decor retreats from its country connotations, to which of course it’s well suited. But used creatively, the range can

“You can easily find something to reference your personality, your job or your lifestyle,” she said. Wright has used decals as an inexpensive border in a bedroom and above photos. “It’s certainly a whole lot less than hiring a painter,” she said. Price varies by size, but a decal around 63.5 cm by 127 cm would usually be less than $100. Barbara Irvine of Syracuse, N.Y., chose a verse from one her favourite hymns to decorate the space above her kitchen sink. The words, “Come ye thankful people, come,” prompt her to count her blessings, she said. She installed them herself by slowly rubbing them off their paper backing with a tool similar to a tongue depressor. “They come with very good instructions,” said Irvine, who ordered the custom phrase from Wall Words in Santa Ana, Calif. “It’s fairly easy. Pastels “are versatile, too, evolving into something more complex and edgy when teamed with other shades,” Lake writes Pastel harks back to a retro era, so mixing in some vintage furniture or accessories makes sense. Make sure they have texture, various finishes and pattern — and blend in some current items to create a lively, personal look. “By mixing pastels with contrasting tones,” Lake writes, “you can make sure that the style remains colourful without becoming sugary.” It tends to a feminine look, to be sure, but adding items with some solid bulk, line and weight can help a room keep an even keel.

This show’s Consumed with organizing messy homes Lauren La Rose THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO — Beneath the piles of discarded clothes, papers or toys which may be littered throughout a home, Consumed host Jill Pollack said there’s likely a deeper root cause to the clutter that isn’t visible amid the congestion. “We all have clutter ... but when it’s affecting your life in the way it is affecting the lives of these families on Consumed, it really is often about something else,” Pollack said in a recent interview. “Is it about power? Is it about literally building walls — emotional walls, physical walls? What is this clutter doing? Why is this stuff literally in the way? And how is it wreaking havoc on their lives?” On Consumed, the organizational expert works with families whose homes have been overrun by too many items. After removing the physical excess, they’re left with the bare essentials to survive with over a two-week period as Pollack tries to get to the heart of their emotional connection to the goods. The host also helps them to assess what to keep and what to toss. Meanwhile, handyman Darren Doyle creates organizational systems designed to help make their spaces more functional. The Season 2 premiere airing Saturday on HGTV Canada sees Pollack working with a husband and wife with four-year-old twins. Pollack recalled a client who was a former high-powered lawyer in New York. The woman had become a yoga instructor in Santa Barbara when the pair started working together. Despite having switched gears with her career, evidence of her past life lingered with the thousanddollar Armani power suits she hadn’t used in years and still had in her possession.

“They were outdated and didn’t fit and whatever all else, but she wept when we got rid of them,” Pollack recalled. “Even though she had chosen not to be that lawyer anymore, here was this passing of this chapter in her life.” Pollack said she always tells clients organizing their lives involves “taking inventory of the past, looking at your present and talking about where you want to go in the future.” “We hold onto these things as talismans for what we were, what we should have been, what we still want to be, whatever that is. “Letting go of them ... I think it’s freeing because we can say: ‘Who am I now and who do I want to be? And let me surround myself with those kinds of optics.” Whether it’s an old cheerleading skirt or a yearbook, Pollack acknowledged there are select sentimental items which are good to keep and

fun to peruse through. But she said there should still be limits on what to safeguard and what to discard. That means dedicating one bin to memorabilia and discarding clothes from your closet that no longer fit or are outdated, she noted. “It’s really thinking about where you are and where you’re going and cherrypicking important things about your past.” Pollack said the thought of tackling clutter can be overwhelming. But for many people, issues with organization may stem from their inability to assign designated spaces for their belongings. “If you don’t know where to put something, then it just lives in and among you and the tables and the chairs and the furniture,” she said. “We all knows where our toothbrush goes.... But for so many of our other items that we supposedly use and need and want, we don’t have a place for it.”

Pollack says thinking and worrying about cleaning up a cluttered space takes a lot more energy than actually doing it. “So many people think that putting time away to actually organize is time that they don’t want to spend,” she said. “They say: ‘I’d rather play with my kids, I’d rather cook, I’d rather read a book.’ But the fact is, all of this stuff is truly weighing on your mind subconsciously. You’re playing with your kid, but you know you have something (to do).” Pollack recommended dedicating an allocated time — be it a few weekend sessions or an afternoon — to the work. Taking a bite-sized approach — such as just tackling the closet or the drawers — can help make the process more manageable and less intimidating, she noted. Maintaining consistency with managing the home can be accomplished by incorporating simple habits as part of your existing routines. 2. Out with (most of) the old. Deciding which items to ditch versus those to keep can be difficult, particularly those which carry a strong

sentimental attachment. “If it’s something very special from your past and you really want to keep the physical object, then dedicate ... let’s say ... a large plastic bin, and put those objects in there,” said Pollack. “If you’re overflowing with three, four, five bins, you’re probably keeping too much. Taking a photo of an old object bound for the trash as a keepsake is another way to preserve the memory, but could create new clutter in the process. Pollack said ill-fitting or outdated clothes should be tossed out, but not all unwanted items have to be put by the curb. Consider finding a specific place — like a charity — where such goods can be donated, she noted. Q: I work from home in a tiny two-bedroom condo where I live with my two girls. We’re in between houses for the next year or so. Our dining room table doubles as my messy desk and our place to eat. I remember you gave a tip on how to make a dining table work as a desk on television, but I can’t remember the fix. Is there a special type of storage cabinet I can buy? Can you help so our temporary home has a little panache? A: One perk of living in in-between houses is that you have less space to clean. On the other hand, smallspace living forces you to be extra organized and tidy. I know this because I’ve been living this way for five years. But that’s another story. The TV se gment that you’re thinking of is called The Switch, an HGTV web series. The series was about living in tight quarters with multipurpose fur niture, such as a TV console that

in a jiffy. I store my trays on the console’s bottom shelf to keep my work out of sight in the evening. You have to look closely to see the tray on my dining table. Since my early magazine styling days, I’ve been obsessed with clear acrylic trays. The one you see in the photo is a garage-sale find, but you can find similar ones at CB2.com. Clear trays are understated; whereas multiple wooden ones can feel clunky, and cheap plastic floral ones should be reserved for backyard barbecues and cafeterias. Back to your space: You don’t want your dining room to look like an office. Avoid filing cabinets, chairs with wheels and phones that light up with multiple lines. Instead, choose stylish accessory-like office equipment that will fade into your dining room’s scenery. All the best during this in-between stage.

It seems obvious to have trays for glasses and plates to help you move things with ease from the kitchen to the dining table, but I use a tray for all my desk accessories and files.
