‘The house that Google built’ Classic architecture, bright colours ALEXANDRA ZABJEK POSTMEDIA NEWS EDMONTON — At nine months pregnant, Christina Dennis was sewing floor-length drapes, coating bar stools with homemade turquoise chalk paint and staging her kitchen for photographs worthy of a home decor contest. Her determination exemplifies how the mother of three young girls doesn’t let a tight schedule or tight budget interfere with creating a beautiful space for her family. (The effort paid off for her in other ways, too: Christina’s photos made her a finalist in the Home Decor Showdown, an interior design competition. As a reward, she and three other finalists met with HGTV star Sarah Richardson when the designer at-

tended the Edmonton Home & Garden Show.) The story behind the Dennis home is almost as striking as the house itself, in which perfectly chosen pops of bright colour play against classic architecture. One impressive part of the tale is that Christina and her husband Sean did most of the work on the house themselves. That included heavy-duty tasks such as framing the structure and sawing wood for the interior trim; timeconsuming work such as laying laminate flooring; and nitty-gritty, why-would-youtake-this-on work such as mixing their own batches of chalk paint to inexpensively update their kitchen table and bar stools. If hearing all that doesn’t make you tired, don’t forget that much of this work was done while Christina was pregnant with her third child. “There were lots of times when we were frustrated … it’s almost like being pregnant,” Christina says. “It’s lots of hard work and frus-

seven years in an 800-squarefoot converted garage on the property. Christina had always wanted to buy an early 20th-century home to renovate. Sean thought that was a terrible idea. Their compromise was to build

this house, which is based on a four-square design and maintains classic elements, such as a grand staircase at the entrance and a mainfloor serving nook that is used as a coffee corner. Carefully chosen acces-

sories make every room hip and modern, but comfortable and accessible. The eightfoot-long patterned kitchen drapes in turquoise add drama to a functional room. The bursts of yellow in the baby’s nursery play perfectly off soothing grey walls. And the turquoise-painted Ikea kitchen cart fits in seamlessly as a side table in the living room. Christina has a graphic design certificate but also describes herself as “momtaught.” She grew up the oldest of five children, so her parents often took on projects themselves to keep on budget. Her mother was a keen seamstress and decorator, constantly changing drapes and re-arranging furniture. “Saving money is half of it,” she says. “I love being unique and having unique stuff, and I wanted this house to be unique. And I like the challenge of being able to create something unique and beautiful on a budget.”
