Simple ways to bring summer into your home Infuse colour but keep big items neutral Lena Sin Postmedia News Summer is the time for patio parties and lazy days at home. Karen Sealy, interior designer and regular Cityline contributor, says freshening the home is a great way to greet the new season. “I always change up my home by season and I love it,” she says. Interior designers Jennifer Scott and Megan Baker, founders of A Good Chick to Know, say the impulse to bring the sunshine into our homes is natural. And it can be done with easy, budgetfriendly flourishes. Here are seven ways to channel summer into our homes.
Let summer bloom in your home by using similar colour accents in different rooms on a light and airy white base.
1. Repetition of colour
a vibrant palette of pinks, yellows and robin’s egg blue, which she carried from the front porch and into the house, including the kitchen and living room. The trick, she says, is to keep the big elements such as fur niture, walls and kitchen cabinets neutral, allowing you to change your mood over time. Colour, adds Sealy, doesn’t
One of the easiest ways to make a big impact is with colour. “The great news is there are no rules about colour anymore. The only rule I would say is repetition. Whatever you’re doing, make it look purposeful by doing it several times,” says Sealy. For one client, Sealy used
need to come in big hits for big impact. You can add colour through throw cushions, lamps, paintings, flowers and other decor accessories. “Pink and yellow is really big right now, it’s spring and a very feminine palette, and people are having a lot of fun with it,” she says. “But if you’re doing pink and yellow, you better carry it through a few rooms so it looks purposeful. You don’t have to do it in big huge hits, but you need to do it in little spurts so people know it was an intentional decision.”
2. Bright whites Summer may be all about colour, but nothing says light and fresh than airy whites. So consider the other end of the colour spectrum with a palette of white and neutrals, say Scott and Baker.

Just a few flowers can bring a room to life, while rotating your art between rooms also keeps things fresh.

Skills/Competences Canada
Mike Holmes participates in a soldering competition at Skills Canada.
We must support Skills Canada
MIKE HOLMES Make it Right
I just got back from Skills/Competences Canada in Vancouver, our country’s nationals when it comes to skilled trades. Imagine: 44 trades, 10 provinces, three territories and hundreds of young competitors from across the country giving everything they’ve got to be the best at what they do. And I’m not just talking construction. Skills Canada includes everything from baking, restaurant service and fashion technology to CNC machining, robotics, website development, aircraft maintenance and TV and video production. Winners from Skills Canada go on to compete in WorldSkills, which is like the Olympics for trades. It includes more than 60 countries and more than 1,000 competitors. It’s not just about winning the gold — it’s about being part of the event. I’ve been working with Skills Canada for eight years and with WorldSkills for six years. This year I brought my son, Mike Jr., with me to see it. I’m also taking him to WorldSkills 2013 in Leipzig, Germany, in July. Why? Because you have to see it to believe it — the passion in these young kids’ eyes, their commitment and integrity. Everybody should be watching. Unfortunately, it’s not televised. Every time I talk about Skills Canada or WorldSkills, I always hear the same thing: How come it’s not televised? Why don’t more people know about it? The truth is I’m asking the same questions. But that’s changing. And I’m telling you, it has to. Skills Canada is about building and supporting tomorrow’s trades professionals — and from what I saw last week, Canada’s in good hands. The problem is that there
Just when we thought there couldn’t possibly be another barbecue gadget, here’s Grillbot. It’s a barbecue pit master’s motorized assistant, one that beeps like R2D2 and looks like a cross between a Roomba (the iRobot vac-
uum) and Pac-Man. Turn off the fire and the automatic cleaner’s trio of circular, whirring, brass brushes make quick work of gunk on a hot or cold grill, so the cook doesn’t have to get hands dirty. Grillbot is rechargeable and has a timer that beeps. It is $99.95 at Grillbots.com. You can also see these gadgets in action at the site.

aren’t enough of these pros. It’s estimated that, by 2016, there will be 1.5 million skilled job vacancies, and 2.6 million by 2021. Not to mention that Canada will be short at least one million tradespeople by 2020. This competition doesn’t just inspire the right kids to get into the right trades — it inspires everybody who watches them. Every year, I’m inspired by the non-stop push and determination of these kids. They leave everything on the competition floor. And they love it. For me it’s really important we have competitions like Skills Canada that entice busloads of kids. They’re realizing it’s cool to be in the trades. You walk around the competition and it’s not about, “I don’t want to be here.” It’s all about, “I love being here.” Skills Canada is being recognized more and more every year. This year was the biggest yet, but we need to do better. And we all need to get behind this competition and support our trades. We’ve built so much crap in the last 30 years that we need to fix, so we’ll need to have the right people doing the right jobs. There’s a female welder that just recently kicked everyone’s butt at Skills Canada. And she’s got her eyes set on WorldSkills 2015 in Brazil. I love that determination. That’s the kind of people we need in the trades. Next year, Skills Canada will be celebrating its 20th anniversary. I want to see it televised. I want to see organizations and governments show their support and make it the biggest Skills Canada competition in history. I want to see top Canadian talent get involved, starting with the competitors themselves. I want Skills Canada and WorldSkills to be recognized like the Olympics. They’re that big.

Strong employment policy has benefits beyond just jobs Alan Thomarat
CEO and President Canadian Home Builders’ Association — Saskatchewan It has become clear that we need to clear some policy fields, deal with irritants and do more to foster the momentum driving this economy. We must not rest or become complacent or feel we have accomplished much to this point. We are on the right track, but we must continue to be action- and outcomes-oriented. We can and must lead this province to a position of prominent player on the global stage for the very long term. That is good for Saskatchewan and good for Canada. As we’ve repeated many times Employment Insurance is a valuable program in Canada and in times of declining employment in some regions, the EI system can be a key tool that supports families. This support serves to mitigate the hardship of job losses and assist workers and families to appreciate that we are all Canadians and we are free to seek employment and quality of life from coast to coast to coast. The government of Canada has been taking bold and innovative steps to improve the employment insurance program to help Canadians retain their families’ quality of life and not spiral into dependency, personal bankruptcy and hardship. Saskatchewan has wealth the world wants and this wealth in jobs and contributions to economic vitality is being shared with Canada, as we are a have province with opportunity for many. We have been encouraging governments to work with us on a better way for new Canadians,
an open door for our proud First Nations, Metis and aboriginals, a new chance for fellow Canadians who have lost jobs and hope. We are solutions driven and we are problem solvers committed to the goals and needs of a housing industry required to foster our economic development. It will take the current moder nization of labour laws, immigration policy and best practices in safety and industry-led education to mitigate the threats of impending labour shortages now before us and thus sustain the momentum of this new Saskatchewan. We need to continue to work together to assess need, identify and address priorities and review our goals and programs so that we continue to realize the outcomes that spread benefits and raise the quality of life. All of this will make a difference for those who hope for opportunity and a better life. Case in point is our work on immigration and especially our Bridges and Foundations Career Development Corporation’s work-based training and placement record of job creation and life building. Due in part to the program’s support in the last year alone, nearly 500 aboriginal Canadians now earn good incomes rather than depending on social programs that offer little prospect for escaping poverty and poor living conditions. Not withstanding all of the foregoing we tend at times to act in cross purposes with our own goals and objectives. Why can’t we show as much commitment to eliminating injuries and fatalities on work sites regardless of the industry, as we have shown in curbing distracted driving and cellphone use. We could lessen the need to press for temporary workers and other skilled immigrants and ease the burden on our labour market supply if we enforce the Occupational Health and Safety Act, implement summary offence ticketing and stop rewarding bad behaviour by giving rebates to
employers that don’t have a good safety record. Currently, Saskatchewan has the second worst safety record in Canada, a record number of workers were killed on the job last year and we lose more than 2,300 full-time workers from our labour force due to injuries every year. At the same time we seek increases in the Immigrant Nominee Pro g ram limits, which I wholly support. We are grateful to the federal minister responsible for immigration for the recent increases but agree with Saskatchewan Minister of the Economy Bill Boyd in that they don’t meet the unique Saskatchewan needs. In the meantime and at all times we need to be more attentive to keeping all our workers safe. This is good for workers, families, business and communities. It is timely that Saskatchewan is now seeking to lead the world in employment policy development that will foster a modern approach to workforce practices that foster long-term economic development. This approach should offer flexibility for families, and foster a framework to address the needs for skills training and a culture of safety that truly keeps a focus on a balance between work and family and maintaining the Saskatchewan advantage. Innovation and leadership in developing modern approaches to labour laws will enhance the Saskatchewan advantage and it’s about time. Enforcement and leadership in training and professionalism of the Occupational Health and Safety Act should lead to safer work sites so everyone can go home safe at night. Alan Thomarat is the president and CEO of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association — Saskatchewan and the Saskatoon & Region Home Builders’ Association. He also serves as a director on the national board of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association in Ottawa.

Summer Think light and airy and floral Continued from F1 The most dramatic impact is to start with all white walls. Otherwise, think white linens, tea towels, throw cushions or even sheer, white window treatments. If it’s in your budget, custom sofa slipcovers might also be an option.
3. Add a sisal rug Something as simple as switching heavy fabrics for lighter ones can herald a fresh start. Sealy, for example, is planning to trade her wool rug for a sisal one in the living room. “You can buy (sisals) at all the big-box stores and they’re really inexpensive,” says Sealy. “This year I’m going to use it in my living room, next year I might throw it in my bedroom and the year after that I might throw it onto my deck.”
4. Open bar Be ready for happy hour at the drop of a hat with a bar stocked with all your cocktail needs. It’s all about spur-of-the moment entertaining. So get your glasses, pitchers, paper umbrellas and liquor out of the cabinet and display them on an open shelf, sideboard or perhaps even a vintage bar cart. Your open bar will encourage you to get on the phone for impromptu gatherings, Scott says. “Summer food is always more finger food, too, so it’s nice if you have those cute little bamboo plates rather than paper plates or pretty napkins,” adds Baker.
5. Fresh flowers Baker and Scott love to indulge in flowers. Just a few stems will bring a room to life after a long winter. Choose long-lasting flowers with strong stems (so they’ll hold up in a variety of vases) such as sunflowers, gerbera daisies, dahlias or even bamboo. The designers suggest either an all-white palette or bold, saturated
Tracey Ayton
Keep an open bar stocked for instant entertaining. colours for the greatest impact. “Hunt around for the cheapest deal,” says Scott. “It’s definitely a matter of doing something that’s sustainable because you don’t want to spend a ton of money (on a big bouquet) that yes, you get a beautiful arrangement for a week and then for the rest of the summer you’ve blown the budget. ”
6. Rotate art Each season, Sealy rotates the art in her home. It’s a simple trick to make the old feel new again. If you can’t afford original art, try buying postcards and art prints rather than mass-produced art from big-box stores, she suggests.
7. Consider second-hand patio furniture Patio furniture can be pricey, so if you’re not ready to invest in a dining set, for example, do it slowly. Perhaps invest in a set of chairs you love, and buy a second-hand table for now. All it needs is an appropriate coat of paint to withstand outdoor wear and you’re ready to go. “You might go to a flea market or consignment store and buy yourself a wooden table for $50. It may need a bit of TLC, you may need to sand it down and then varnish it with an outdoor varnish.

What was old is new. Porchscape is a traditionally styled neighbourhood in Harbour Landing. The urban design includes, attractive street-trees, post-top street lights, and sidewalks separated from the street by boulevards. sound check
New techniques, products make it quieter Kim Cook The Associated Press Homeowner Christine Igot knows one thing for sure. “I will not have a fridge in my kitchen ever again,” she says firmly. In the new house she’s building, in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, the 51-year-old is putting the refrigerator in a pantry off the kitchen and will doubleinsulate the walls. Why? All that noise, noise, noise. Her current house has an open plan, and the sound of the fridge drives her crazy. “I tried to get used to it. I had an appliance man come to see if it was running properly.” It was — it just emitted a high-pitched whine. Roxanne Went uses her car as “a cone of silence” to escape the noise of leaf blowers outside her suburban West Chester, Pa., home and of family members’ blaring music inside. For baby boomers, noise matters. “Decreased tolerance for loud sounds is a fairly common symptom of age-related hearing loss, as the range of comfortable listening levels seems to shrink,” says Ted Madison, an audiologist in St. Paul, Minn., and a representative of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Beyond creating stress and annoyance, loud noises can be deafening. The National Institute for Occupa-
Bio Ionic
The iDry Whisper Light hair dryer was one of the first global products to receive the Quiet Mark designation.
LG Electronics
The TrueSteam Dishwasher from LG uses a Direct Drive motor, which makes it less noisy than many dishwashers on the market. tional Safety and Health in the U.S. reckons that noise over 85 decibels may cause hearing loss. So what are the loud products we live with at home? According to ASHA, based in Rockville, Md., the “very loud” range includes blenders, blow dryers, vacuum cleaners and alarm clocks, all in the 80- to 90-decibel range. “Extremely loud”
— in the 100- to 110-decibel range — are snow blowers, gas lawn mowers and some MP3 players. In West Sussex, England, a Noise Abatement Society fields complaints from citizens about annoyances ranging from neighbours’ power tools to barking dogs and wind chimes. Managing director Poppy Elliot says her team decided to chan-

nel the collective angst over unwanted noise into Quiet Mark, a seal of approval they give to products designed to be quieter. So far more than 35 products have received the designation, from hair dryers to commercial tools, and Elliot said the organization is expanding globally. “The ultimate aim is to encourage industry across
the board to put a high priority on factoring in low noise at the design stage. Investment in acoustic design and sound quality of a product should be just as important as energy efficiency or visual design,” Elliot says. Manufacturers are responding to concerns about noise with new, quieter products. LG has several — including the TrueSteam dishwasher — that use a Direct Drive motor, an alternative to the noisier belt-and-pulley system of traditional motors. Swiss-based Liebherr uses low-sound dual air compressors and cooling circuits in their high-end fridges. And Samsung’s dishwasher has extra insulation, which cuts the sound. Range hood fans can often be noisy. Italian firm Falmec makes a line that uses a perimeter extraction method rather than one single vacuum vent; the air is drawn evenly into the hood’s edges
more quietly than being sucked straight up. Jerek Bowman, a chef in Toronto, recommends sous vide cooking, using a thermal circulator and heating the food in water, as a quieter way to go. “There’s simply no noise. You can use it the same way you would for roasting, stewing or braising,” he says. A side benefit? With the equivalent of only a light bulb to heat the water, there’s some energy savings as well. Food processing pioneer Magimix has a new, all-inone, multi-tasking mixer that chops, slices, whisks, grates, kneads and mixes — and does it quietly with an induction motor. Without needing to use stiff brushes to transfer electricity, induction motors mean a weightier but quieter appliance. Rowenta’s noise-reducing inventions include the Turbo Silence home fan and the Silence Form Extreme vacuum cleaner, which emits a decidedly timid 65 decibels. Electrolux’s Ultra Silencer canister vacuum comes in at 68 decibels. As for hair dryers, the Centrix Q Zone and Bio Ionic iDry Whisper Light are two low-noise options; the latter was one of the first products to receive the Quiet Mark designation. And Stihl has a line of lithium-ion battery yard gear — including a leaf blower, mower and trimmer — that are much quieter than gas-powered equipment.

by embracing the summer By Robyn Tocker For L-P Specialty Products Summer is here, and for most people that means getting out and enjoying the sun.
