Bringing Downton Abbey into the home TV series inspires formal style Amy Lorentzen The Associated Press Intrigued by the drama and inspired by the sophistication of British aristocrats in Downton Abbey, some fans are plotting to bring the series’ style into their own homes, from gilded finishes to opulent upholstery to portrait paintings. “We’ve gone so casual in the last decade in terms of home decor. I think there is a desire to be a little more formal, or a little more glamorous,” says Kristie Barnett, an interior design blogger in Nashville, Tenn. “That doesn’t mean it can’t be family friendly.” Downton Abbey, in production for its fourth season, features the noble Crawley family “upstairs” and its servants “downstairs” in a sprawling country estate.
Melanie G Photography/The Decorologist
Downton Abbey-inspired decor in the home of Kristie Barnett, who publishes the blog TheDecorologist.com. Many Downton Abbey fans are plotting to bring the PBS series’ style into their homes. The characters are struggling to bring the estate and their traditional sensibilities into the 1920s, a time of social and political ferment. Ornate drawing rooms,
flowing boudoirs, vibrant gardens and crisp, clean servants’ quarters make the gorgeous backdrop for the PBS Masterpiece melodrama.
So how do you bring some of that aristocratic look into a comfortable modern home? One of the simplest ways to achieve the “upstairs”
look of Downton Abbey is to apply gold metallic paint for a gilded finish on wood furniture, picture frames, mirror edges and other decorative items, including book-
ends and lamp stands. In her living room, Barnett, who blogs at TheDecorologist.com, used gold paint to make a barley-twist coffee table appear worthy of nobility. Golden candlesticks and a crystal doorknob atop piles of books finish the look. “Gilt was all the rage during the British Edwardian Age,” says Barnett. “And it’s all the rage in my house.” Richly upholstered settees, footstools, chaise lounges and Bergere chairs can add a touch of bygone beauty, but you should allow plenty of space for more livable pieces such as a traditional sofa. If you can’t afford new furniture, consider adding silk or damask throw pillows. Tapestries and oriental rugs can be affordable and add the feel of affluence. Check out Etsy.com for Downton Abbey-style fabrics and textiles. Another easy way to achieve the upstairs style, while keeping things practical and comfortable, is to hang an ornate light fixture or chandelier.-

Universal design ensures a home is for life Stu Niebergall A growing trend when consumers are purchasing a new home is incorporating universal design. Universal design is another way to look at how the features in your home add comfort and convenience not only for today, but into the future as well. Universal design is useful and marketable to people with diverse or changing abilities. This approach ensures reach, manipulation, and use regardless of the user’s body, size, or mobility. This type of home is designed with products and environments to accommodate all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized
design. The perfect way to incorporate these design features into your life is through the building of a new home. When a home is designed in such a manner, it thoughtfully takes into consideration design ideas that benefit everyone in the home at different ages and stages of life, which is why it is considered to be universal design. Sometimes this can be misunderstood as design that accommodates disabilities. Though this is taken into consideration, it is really about achieving accessibility. Wide entrances that accommodate a wheelchair also make it a lot easier to manoeuvre a child sleeping in a stroller, through the front door. Another example of universal design is levered handles on doors. Whether you have some form of arthritis in your hands, are bringing in groceries, or are a young child with small hands, levered door handles are easier to open.
Inside the home, accessibility is enhanced when there is one level construction, with no sunken rooms or steps. Non-slip floors in the front entrance and bathrooms, combined with good lighting, and light switches and electrical outlets that are not too high or too low, are easy and inexpensive adaptations. An open-plan design minimizes hallways and doorways and therefore maximizes mobility and sight lines. If you need a hallway make sure it is wider, and in the living/ dining/family room ensure there is enough turning space for a wheelchair. Outside the home, well-lit walkways and as few steps as possible to enter the home are potential ways to improve accessibility. In our weather conditions this is safer in wet or icy conditions, easier to clear snow, ice, and leaves, and repairs are simpler and less expensive. In addition, covered entranceways and easy to oper-
ate door locks, like push pads or fingerprint identification rather than keys, should be considered. Low-maintenance vegetation and raised planters and flower beds can add outdoor style and make the yard easier to maintain years into the future. Including the option to age in place, into the initial design of your newly built home, can have significant benefits and save costs down the road. This is in part why mature home buyers are finding these design principles so attractive when moving from an older home into a new home. I am not suggesting an existing home cannot have many of the universal design principles incorporated into the home through renovations. This can be done, though it may be costly to make the changes that will accommodate your needs when you are older. However if you are thinking of building a new home and want to “future proof ”
your home, we suggest you plan ahead and talk to your builder about getting the right features and products included right from the outset. This will allow you to build a home that is retirement-ready. Building a home that is retirementready, that can accommodate mobility challenges, if necessary, can save you a considerable amount of money later on. It also adds to the comfort, convenience and safety of your home today. One thing we are anticipating is that as baby boomers continue to age, demand for more accessibility in home design will only rise. Universal design is a practical leap forward in the evolution of residential home design and home building that can accommodate this demand. Watch for style, colour and scale to avoid design blunders Sheila Brady Postmedia News Carolyn Munro still shudders at the memory. A wife’s tightly crossed ar ms and accusatory stare, while the husband in a million-dollar home showed off his renovation of the couple’s ensuite bathroom. “It was a disaster,” says the veteran designer and owner of Carolyn Munro Design in Ottawa. The amateur handyman had found a deal on a corner glass shower stall, modern grey tiles for the walls and old-fashioned Mexican tiles for the floor. “Nothing matched. The floors were cold and tiling in the shower stopped an inch short of the glass doors. “He could have saved money and time if he had talked first to experts, spending a few hundred dollars for advice, instead of several thousand dollars on a renovation that will have to be done again.” Now, the Mexican floor is being torn up, heating cables have been ordered and the hunt is on for agreeable tiles, says Munro, who was also hired to oversee their kitchen makeover. “He wanted to save the kitchen cabinets from the ’60s, but they will do better service in the basement for storage,” says the designer, who regularly sees design blunders by well-meaning homeowners. Irene Langlois managed to step in and avoid a design blunder when clients called to ask for advice on how to make more room in their small home to better handle their young family. “They wanted to finish the basement, easily spending $70,000 digging down to increase the height of ceilings,” says the interior designer, who recently gutted and renovated her own home. “We talked and they soon saw that it wasn’t a wise decision because their young children would be out of sight. “Instead, I came up with a plan to take down some walls on the main level and open up the space. The right time to finish the basement is later on when the kids are teenagers and you want them out of sight.” One of the biggest design blunders is rushing into a basement renovation on the cheap, not understanding that it is one big job, says Norm Lecuyer, owner of Just Basements in Ottawa. “It is absolutely the most economical way to do an addition to your home, but it deserves good, quality construction so it will be an equal partner with the rest of your house.” He warns that finishing a basement is not for weekend warriors learning wiring, plumbing and drywalling on the job. “There are jobs where you should hire professionals.” He estimates it costs $75 to $80 a square foot to make over a basement, compared to about $250 a square foot for a main-floor addition. When it comes to kitchen planning, it’s best to learn when to say no to an overly large island,

An easy design mistake to fix: Move furniture away from the wall and arrange seating in an L shape for easier conversation.
Finishing a basement is not for weekend warriors learning wiring, plumbing and drywall on the job, says Norm Lecuyer of Just Basements. says Kimberly Silcox, a designer at Laurysen Kitchens in Ottawa. Large islands are popular, but you need enough space to manoeuvre between counters. There should be at least 36 inches (about one metre) between an island and side counter, otherwise dishwashers, fridges and stoves may not be able to easily open. There are also smaller, more cosmetic design blunders that shriek “amateur at work”, according to an informal poll of designers: Get a game plan: Often people have no real concept of what they

Just get rid of it: There comes a time when a room is too cluttered, says Munro. “You don’t have to keep a piece just because your mother gave it to you. Give it away, move on, she says. Hem please: The days of heavy drapes puddling onto the floor are long gone, says Courdin.

are doing and they believe every piece they buy will go together in one room, says interior designer Luc Crawford of Luc Crawford Design in Ottawa. “There is a way to put an eclectic look together.” If you collect rocks, put them together on a table, he says. Don’t scatter them around; it looks cluttered. A successful eclectic look requires a connecting thread, a common colour, shape or texture. Too much brown: The eye needs stimulation and contrast, says Yvonne Potter, a designer, furniture maker and partner with the
CKY Design Group. “It’s all about light hitting the retina and creating interest.” She tells of having an “aha” moment in a third-year psychology course when the professor explained how Ger man forces tortured prisoners by keeping them in a grey cell. “It drove them insane, partly because they had no visual stimulation.” A peacetime variation would be to have too much wood of one colour or too much brown in a room. “It’s deadly boring,” says Potter, who blogs at ckydesigngroup.ca. Away from the wall: It’s ugly and dangerous to your health to line up furniture in a straight line, says Potter. “You get a crick in your neck, having to turn to talk to friends.” It’s much better to pull furniture away from the wall and create L-shaped seating areas, where people can see and talk to each other. All about scale: Don’t go cramming big sofas next to teeny, tiny chairs, says Crawford. The pieces have to complement each other. A blunder variation is cramming oversized furniture pieces into small spaces, warns veteran designer Michael Courdin.

Salute World Plumbing Day
Continued from F1 Affordable plaster or stencil medallions placed around light fixtures can be another eye-catching element. Or one can use candlelight, which will bounce off mirrors, glass and crystal, creating the sort of warm glow that makes the Crawleys’ multi-course dinners look so enticing. The return to detail and decoration includes opulent upholstery, drapes and wall coverings, says Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan, founder of ApartmentTherapy.com. “People seem to be ready for more and more luxe materials and dramatic finishes,” he says. “Even wallpaper, which was trending modern, is back to classic floral patterns and English traditionalism, but often with a bit of a twist.” Painted walls are darker, with a gloss finish. You can create the upper-crust feel with bold jewel tones, including emerald and sapphire. Also in the traditional Downton Abbey palette are refreshing pastels and creams, says Mary Lawlor, manager of colour marketing for Kelly-Moore Paints. One of the mansion’s expansive drawing rooms, for example, features a pale green wallpaper further softened with richly upholstered furniture in a mix of rose and classic ivory. The British nobility takes its heritage seriously, and there are painted portraits and landscapes throughout the show’s castle. If you’re at a rummage sale or consignment shop, pick up similar art and create a small grouping on one wall. You don’t have to be descended from these subjects to bring their sophistication home. While many elements of Downton Abbey style have a feminine appeal, there’s no
MIKE HOLMES Make it Right
Kristie Barnett/ The Decorologist
Downton Abbey-inspired living room decor with vintage portraits and gold finishes. The style holds appeal to those trying to inject formality and glamour into home decor. mistaking the bold, masculine feel of Lord Grantham’s library. Add jewel-toned leather furniture or leather throw pillows to reading areas for a twist to the muted espresso brown that has been popular in recent years. Consider turning a littleused dining room into a study, using the table as a hearty desk fit for the lords and ladies of your home. “People are wanting to do something different in their dining rooms, so a lot of dining rooms are being filled with bookcases,” Barnett says. She advises painting bookcases the same shade as walls, but in a gloss or lacquer finish. Contrasting with the rich decor of the show’s upstairs rooms is the subdued, neutral palette and texture of the downstairs staff ’s living
and working quarters. “Think natural materials like linen, cotton, raw wood, and a simplistic farmhousetype esthetic that is influencing DIY projects,” says Becki Speakman, trend and design director for Michaels Stores. One way to fashion the look is to use washed and softened painter’s drop cloths for inexpensive curtains and slipcovers. Lawlor recommends grounded greys and varnished ivory. Creating flourishes of Downton Abbey style throughout a home can add interest and refinement. But give just a nod to the era — don’t try to replicate it. “The idea is to incorporate some of the glamour of that time in our modernday setting,” Barnett says, “without creating a museum in our homes.”
St. Patrick’s Day seems to be the main event in March. But how many people know ab o u t Wo rl d P l u m b i n g Day? It’s in March too — on March 11 every year. But it always seems to go under the radar. Why? For one, not many people know about it. And two, not many people care. If you don’t care you should, because imagine: how fun would St. Patrick’s Day be if the toilets stopped working? Plumbing is one of those things that people don’t appreciate until it’s gone. When the plumbing stops working it disrupts your entire life. Anyone who has ever had the water shut off in their building or in their neighbourhood knows exactly what I’m talking about. You can’t flush the toilet, wash your hands, wash your clothes, do the dishes, take a shower, cook ... I can go on all day. Or how many times has a broken water main paralyzed an entire section of a city? The headlines say it all. When you notice these things you start to understand how important plumbing is just to keep everyday life going. And when natural disasters — like a flood or earthquake — compromise the plumbing system, we quickly learn just how important plumbing really is. Just look at Haiti and Japan. The 2010 earthquake in Haiti left different areas in the country in complete ru-
ins. The 2011 tsunami caused much of the same destruction in Japan. In both cases, people wanted to rebuild immediately. But before any of that can start, plumbing and sanitation systems need to be restored. Plumbing does two things: provides access to clean water and supports a proper sanitation system. These are two basic functions that are fundamental to modern day living. And if the plumbing fails, we lose both. Most of the problems in Haiti that people continue to face today are a direct result of not having proper plumbing. That includes water-related diseases and problems that stem from not having a functioning sanitation system. Millions of people die every year all over the world from water-related diseases. According to the World Health Organization, 3.1 million children die each year from water-related diseases. That’s one child every 15 seconds! What’s worse is that a lot of these diseases are preventable if people only had access to clean water and proper sanitation systems, essentially, basic plumbing. Construction can’t start until a sanitation system is in place and is working. Otherwise, you risk the health of any workers and trades. Plus, what good is a house or building if people are getting sick and dying because of a poor plumbing system in the area? That’s why plumbing comes first and building comes second. World Plumbing Day is about paying our respects to a trade that plays a big part in our lives. Because the truth is plumbing is about more than just fixing leaks and low water pressure. Don’t get me wrong, it’s
about that too. But more importantly, World Plumbing Day reminds us that the work of a good plumber is essential to public health and the environment. We should be saluting these heroes. In the spirit of World Plumbing Day, there are a few things you can do: • Call in a licensed plumber to test your water pressure and check your plumbing. The average home can lose 7,500 to 75,000 litres of water due to leaks. • When you can, use a broom to clean your driveway. Using a garden hose can waste up to 50 litres of water every minute. • Install low-flow bathroom fixtures, including toilets and shower heads. • Use a hose nozzle when you wash your car. This can save close to 380 litres of water every time you wash your car. • Practise g rey water recycling for your home. Grey water is ‘used’ water that comes from sinks and drains, as well as reclaimed rainwater. The water is then treated and filtered. You can use grey water to flush toilets, water the lawn, wash the car and do laundry. But it can’t be used for drinking, showering or bathing. Check out Worldplumbingday.org to learn more about World Plumbing Day and what you can do to make it right. And don’t forget to raise your glass in salute of all good plumbers everywhere before you drink your first pint of green beer this weekend.
