Invite spring to your Easter dinner table Decorate with pastels and flowers Susan Semenak Postmedia News Think past the muck of late March and ahead a few weeks for inspiration for an Easter table setting. Create a spring theme by layering pastel colours, floral prints and bouquets of blooms. For table linens, borrow the yellow, turquoise and melon-coloured sherbet tones from this season’s fashion colours and pair them with fresh flowers and trailing vines. Bring in bunches of budding branches, such as cherry blossoms, pussy willows or yellow-blossomed forsythia and set them in a tall vase on a side table. Fill diminutive six-ounce soft-drink bottles with individual blossoms — tulips, daffodils or ranunculus, for example. Not into florals? For the

dinner table centrepiece, set a row of twiggy bird’s nests along the middle of the table and line them with green moss and an assortment of real eggs: speckled quail, sand-coloured guinea hen eggs and pale blue duck eggs. Or transplant storebought potted herbs into small clay pots and stand one at each place setting. We found beautiful white dinner and dessert plates with scalloped rims, brightly-coloured patterned Asian bowls, yellow damask-print napkins and handmade turquoise pottery coasters from Anthropologie (anthropologie.com). We layered them with turquoise embossed dinner plates, also from Anthropologie. Our yellow linen tablecloth is from Crate & Barrel (crateandbarrel.ca). So is the moss we used to line the birds’ nests, and the yellow luncheon plates. We went to Indigo (indigo. ca) for decorative birds’ nests and for green stampedglass drinking goblets and shallow Portuguese bowls in matte yellow.

A spring-themed table set for Easter features egg-filled nests, miniature soft-drink bottles with tulips and ranunculus flowers, pastel-coloured linens and patterned dinnerware.

Housing priority in Sask. budget Alan thomarat

CEO and President Canadian Home Builders’ Association – Saskatchewan The government of Saskatchewan once again demonstrated its commitment to the continued growth of our province in this week’s budget address delivered at the Legislative Building in Regina. Program funding must remain sustainable and prudence should continue to guide government decision making. The Saskatchewan government’s initiatives encourage sustainable growth and continue previous effective investments in the future of the province. Our association and our industry understand and exercise spending restraint and believe that thoughtful government investment produces lasting benefits for individuals, families, businesses and communities. The association commends the government for its demonstrated commitment to prioritizing housing availability and attainability in our province. Our association and our industry are encouraged by the collaborative efforts of the minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation through programs that seek to stimulate new housing construction in order

to accommodate our growing population and communities. The government of Saskatchewan expanded its role in assisting municipalities with plans for residential development as an essential element of healthy, sustainable community growth. Pro g rams that encourage municipal participation in housing development in partnership with private enterprise, such as the Encouraging Community Housing Options (ECHO) funding, seek to address housing issues in communities across the province. Continuing support for the Rental Construction Incentive Program and the Affordable Home Ownership Program, as well as increases to Rental Housing Supplements are a clear commitment on the part of Saskatchewan Housing Corporation to partner with the housing industry to achieve real outcomes in addressing housing affordability and supply issues. The provincial government has demonstrated a commitment to increasing our skilled workforce through incentives that encourage youth to participate in education and training and remain in Saskatchewan, such as the Graduate Retention Program or the Tuition Tax Credit. We must align our postsecondary curriculum focus with the pressing demands in the Saskatchewan labour market. We note the increase in apprenticeship seats, which is in line with the persistent

demand for skilled trades. Efforts to address waiting lists for Adult Basic Education programs are also timely so that we can better prepare the under-employed for the high-quality jobs that need to be filled, and continued investment in Immigrant Settlement Support is vital to ensuring that the experiences of new Canadians, particularly in Saskatchewan, are positive ones. The association supports programs such as the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program and recommends it be continued and expanded to encourage businesses to recruit from the international skilled labour pool, while also attracting Canadians from other provinces who are seeking employment opportunities. The government can also direct funding toward initiatives that expand the number of skilled workers that participate in the province’s economy and we support the premier and the minister of the Economy in their efforts at the federal level to increase the cap on nominees for Saskatchewan. Regional collaboration will allow many urban and rural municipalities to combine resources to make planning and development more efficient and economically sustainable. Currently, Saskatchewan has 786 municipalities, which reduces the economic benefits of population density and critical mass. Reorganizing the existing municipal model

to a regional governance model can increase planning and funding efficiencies for municipalities, which results in real cost savings for individuals and families living in these communities. In the near term, however, this government has acknowledged the need to encourage municipal collaboration and is putting resources in place to support this. Further, the association applauds the position of the government, as well as the Ministry of Government Relations, to intervene where poor relations are actually causing barriers to growth and are at cross purposes with the Saskatchewan Plan For Growth. Adopting Regional Planning Authorities will serve where necessary local, rural and regional interests, but moreover they will enhance provincewide efforts to grow the New Saskatchewan. The Canadian Home Builders’ Association — Saskatchewan is encouraged by the government’s commitment to fiscal responsibility, and we look forward to the continued and sustainable growth of our communities and our province. We are not looking back.

Kohler has harvested the best hands-free technology for Sensate, its most advanced faucet, designed to streamline activities in the kitchen, where hands are often messy or full. milliseconds. The zone extends to back of the spout allowing for intuitive filling without awkward gestures. “The Sensate faucet brings a new level of convenience to the kitchen,” S a r a h F i t z s i m m o n s, product manager for Kohler faucets, said in a statement. “It allows you to flow through tasks … without pausing to turn the faucet handle on and off and without worrying about spreading the mess and germs.”

make it right

’Tis the season for home maintenance MIKE HOLMES Make it Right

JCPenney Photo

In a new partnership with Pantone, JCPenney launches a bedding and bath collection that includes emerald green, Pantone’s Color of the Year.

Can a bold colour of the year find a home in home decor? Kim Cook The Associated Press When Pantone LLC announced that emerald green was its Colour of the Year for 2013, reaction among designers and interior consultants was mixed. The company, which creates and matches colours for the home and fashion industries, picks a top hue each year based on current use and expected continued popularity. For New York colour consultant Debra Kling, emerald green’s boldness means it should be used only as an accent. “Emerald might be one of those polarizing colours like purple — you either love it or hate it, and certainly could get tired of it fast,” she says. Other shelter style arbiters, however, such as Elle Decor, heralded the colour by featuring luxe goods in emerald green, including fabrics from Scalamandre, Schumacher and Phillip Jef-

fries, and Baccarat water glasses. Greens have been strong for a while because of interest in nature, said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of Pantone’s research arm known as the Pantone Color Institute. She calls green “a colour of growth, renewal, healing, unity and regeneration.” So can you decorate with emerald green without becoming overwhelmed by it? New York designer Elaine Griffin thinks you can, as long as you’re careful. “T here’s no g etting around it, emerald is flat out dramatic. Which means it’s best used in small doses, as accessories,” she says. Fo r t h o s e l i k i n g t h e colour enough to consider paint, Griffin has a suggestion. “True emerald should go in tiny spaces like foyers or powder rooms, and then dining rooms, which always benefit from a theatrical touch. But it’s too harsh a colour for rooms in which you linger.”

Consider malachite accessories. “Malachite is emerald at its best, so take your inspiration from there. Malachite boxes, printed fabrics like Tony Duquette’s for Jim Thompson, bedecked plates and table lamps are all fab,” Griffin says. Some colours pair well with emerald, and can give a visual pop to a room. Griffin likes yellow and brown, “like a sun-dappled forest.” As preppy go-withs, try raspberry, peacock, Prussian blue, pale rhubarb and turquoise. And Kling notes that emerald pairs well with other greens: “In contrast to any other colour family, the human eye perceives that no two greens clash ... we’re accustomed to seeing every variant of green coexisting harmoniously in nature.” Where shouldn’t you use the hue? “Avoid upholstering a longterm piece like a sofa in emerald — I promise the visual thrill will be gone in a matter of months,” Griffin says.

We’ve set our clocks one hour ahead. St. Patrick’s Day mayhem has wrapped. And Easter is about a week away. I’d say all signs point to spring. This week marked the beginning of spring. And when most people think of spring they think April showers, the birds and bees, maybe a barbecue or two. I think of home maintenance … and my boat (but that’s another column). Spring is that special time of year when we give our homes the once over to see how well they’ve made it through the winter. What are we looking for? The first thing I would do is check for water stains in the attic, especially around the rafters. I’ll say it again: the roof is your home’s first line of defence. The attic can tell you if it’s holding up. With the extra precipitation and melting snow that’s typical of spring, it’s also important to check for water pooling on your property. Puddles in your backyard, front yard or along your fence could signal a grading issue. You will need to call in a professional landscaper to regrade the property or it will get worse every year. A grading issue can lead to costly problems like water coming into the basement. Also, check for cracks or holes in your home’s exterior walls and foundation. Holes usually can be filled

The Holmes Group

A thorough assessment of your home’s exterior during spring can flag important issues that should be corrected. in with expanding foam if they aren’t major. Not all foundation cracks are serious, but some might need extra attention. If you find any cracks — either outside or in an unfinished basement — mark them with tape and check them again after a few months. If they do not change, fill them in with an epoxy injection; but if they do get worse, call a structural engineer. Look for pellet-shaped droppings or shed wings along the perimeter of your home; they could mean termites. Get rid of any leaves and debris along your exterior walls where animals can nest. Also clean out the gutters and check if they’ve corroded or disconnected. If there are any shingle granules, get your roof checked. Check the mortar in between bricks. If it’s been eaten away, it will need repointing. If you have a stone path that was dry set (instead of set in mortar), brush stone dust or sand in the joints. This locks the pavers and prevents weeds from growing in between the stones. Spring is also a good time to check the air conditioner.

Disconnect the electric power and clear away leaves and debris on the unit. Vacuum the grille and register inside and change the furnace filter. Plug it back in and turn it on to see how it works. Also, consider getting a home maintenance inspection, which can point out any issues in your home and let you know which ones need to be addressed first. After winter, problems in your home should be more visible, which is why home maintenance inspections are popular in the spring. But be careful. Not all home inspectors are created equal. Hire a qualified, licensed inspector who knows what they’re doing. How do you know if they’re qualified? Ask a lot of questions, and check out the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation fact sheet, Hiring a Home Inspector. Catch Mike Holmes in his new series, Holmes Makes It Right Tuesdays on HGTV. Family cave is ‘hub’ for TV star Morrow Postmedia News What do you do get when you mix a busy television career with four children under the age of 10? You get an actor who cherishes his family and his home and who, in the way that doting fathers do, builds his house around his children. Which means that Joshua Morrow, who plays the handsome young scion Nicholas Newman in the toprated daytime soap The Young and The Restless, has turned his man cave into a family cave. Morrow was happy to chat during a recent interview in Vancouver about what makes his house a home. Firstly, he laughs, it’s “the heathens” — his three sons Cooper, 10, seven-year-old Crew and four-yearold Cash — along with the most recent addition, his four-monthold daughter Charlie, who keep Morrow and his wife Tobe on their toes, adding up to a chaotic houseful in the Los Angeles home they recently bought, renovated and are set to move into later this month. They took the house down to the studs, he says, and are converting what would be the main living room into a man-cave-cum-family room. Morrow says he doesn’t like rooms in houses that have “no purpose,” such as formal living rooms. This will be the couple’s fifth house, and the previous one saw them convert the dining room into the man/family cave, complete

with big comfy couches and three big-screen televisions. One of the flat screens was used by his sons for movies and games, while the other was for dad to watch sports (on mute, so as not to disturb the boys). The family cave also doubles as Morrow’s office. The renos, says Morrow, include a bedroom for each Joshua of the four chilMorrow dren, although he says his youngest and oldest sons still want to share. As for Charlie, well, “she will be the queen of the castle.” We had some other domestic questions for Morrow. What style is your house? “Traditional.” Who does the cooking? “My wife. I don’t cook anything. But I always do the dishes.” What is the one toy that the family couldn’t live without? “Balls.” Theirs is an active family, he adds, and always on the go, whether they’re spending an afternoon in the backyard pool and Jacuzzi or playing favourite sports like baseball, basketball, soccer and football. Where does everyone in the house gather? “The hub,” which is what Morrow calls that purpose-built family cave and which clearly is the heart of their home.

Removing wax crayon from dryer easier than you think Reena Nerbas For Postmedia News Q: Having my grandson in the house makes for a busy home — and now the inside of my dryer is very colourful. Do you know how to get melted crayon off the inside of my dryer? I’m guessing he’d left crayons in his pocket. Thank-you. A: All you need is some good old-fashioned white Colgate toothpaste. Scrub the dryer with a water-dampened toothbrush and Colgate. Rinse and wipe. Q: I wonder what I can use for a solution to dampen my dust cloths, instead of buying a spray. I find a

Rejuvenating your kitchen cabinets and hardware can create a big design impact, without blowing your budget.

Restored cabinets enhance homes Shell Busey For Postmedia News Cabinets are a focal point of the kitchen that will age a home if worn or dated. Rejuvenating wood cabinets will make a big impact with little cost. To refresh older oak cabinets, one product I often recommend is Briwax. To clean away dark, sticky buildup, nicks, scratches and watermarks using Briwax, first remove the cabinet doors and wipe them down with contact cement solvent to remove any grease and grime buildup. Do this in a wellventilated space.

Next, apply Briwax in the appropriate colour, using a white nylon scrubber pad or #0000 oilfree steel wool, to a small area, let dry and buff with a clean lint-free cloth.

grades to update the kitchen, such as adding crown moulding and replacing worn or dated hardware, kitchen faucets and light fixtures.

HIRING A PROFESSIONAL

Another option is to replace the cabinet doors fronts. To begin, contact a cabinet refacing service to give you an in-home estimate and to find out what type of finishes are available. The process involves removing the old doors and drawer fronts. The cabinet frames, door and drawer fronts are resurfaced with the new finish and new hardware is installed.

There are companies that specialize in reviving the existing wood cabinet doors to the original condition. Make sure the contractor has proper insurance, proper accreditations and solid references.

dry cloth just doesn’t work as well as one that is sprayed with furniture polish. Can I make my own at home? A: For regular dusting use either the dust attachment on your vacuum or water on a soft microfibre cloth. Each fibre of a good quality microfibre cloth is 100 times finer than human hair, and is the best at picking up dust particles. You can also make your own dust repellent by combining one part liquid fabric softener with four parts water, then spray and wipe. Another favourite solution; put olive oil onto a soft cloth and wipe wood. You can add lemon essential oils to olive oil for a fresh, lemon scent.

Pendant lighting adds sparkle to eating areas Alykhan Velji For Postmedia News Pendant lighting is most commonly used above a kitchen island. It frees up space to work at a counter, casts great light on what you’re doing and adds a bit of sparkle to the room. Pendants are also being installed everywhere from staircases and bedsides to even above vanities in the bathrooms. They are versatile and work in many different areas of the home and manufacturers are having a lot of fun with their designs. Pendant lights are really becoming the “it” products in design at the moment. For me, I like the bold statement of grouping pendants en masse above a dining table to create a focal point that is different than a chandelier and more interesting than using pot lights. They’re versatile in size and design. Here are my top picks for the lighting that will be the exclamation point in your space. 1. Glint Pendant (Crate and Barrel): The teardrop shape and smoked glass give this pendant a rustic vibe. The brass hardware gives it an antique feeling but not so far to take it off trend. Place this above a small table or in a nook, or as a group over an island to add a traditional element. 2. Metal Bell Pendant (Pottery Barn): This gorgeous pendant comes in a variety of colours, but the coral has to be my favourite. A simple shape and not overly dramatic, this would be perfect for an all-white modern kitchen to give it some punch. 3. Wesco Cord Hung Pendant (Barn Light Electric) $99: The price could not be better on this stunning pendant. Clean lines and simple in its form, the yellow highgloss metal finish makes a fabulous statement. This fixture can be customized to have a wire cage on the under side to give it a vintage appeal, making it perfect for a farmhouse style space.

The Bronze Copper Shade is a highly reflective shade with a warm metallic glow. (Tom Dixon, $550.)

The Metal Bell, available at Pottery Barn ($129), would be perfect to enliven an all-white kitchen. 4. Bronze Copper Shade (Tom Dixon): Giving off a ’60s disco/ futuristic vibe, this pendant will cause a stir in any interior. I would love to place a grouping of three above a round table. The reflective surface also makes it perfect for small spaces. 5. Sentry Pendant (Christiaan + Plank): Conceived by Calgary duo the Massie Brothers, this pendant is made of spun aluminum and is available in powder-coated gloss or matte exterior with brushed interior. I love that they can be customized from nine available options for both tops and bottoms. Something unique that would make any space shine. 6. Betina Pendant (Currey & Company): A lot of crystal in a small package, this fixture is classically styled and adds a touch of glamour. The elegant shape would make it fitting for any area where you want a touch of glamour.

consumer advice

Consider the psychology of buying a house Emotion plays bigger role than you imagine Patrick Langston Postmedia News You’d buy a sweater on impulse, but when it comes to buying a home it’s all about calm deliberation, right? You might be surprised. Price, square footage, location: “All that can be trumped by the visceral reaction of seeing a home,” says June Cotte, who teaches marketing at Western University’s Ivey Business School. “Smells, colours, sounds you can hear inside or from the outside — you might not be aware of them, but they can have an influence.” The layout may even subliminally remind you of the home of a former boyfriend, says Cotte. That can have a positive or negative emotional impact on how you perceive a house that’s for sale. In fact, a study published in the Journal of Advertising Research in 2002 said emotions can be twice as important as knowledge in consumer buying decisions. Subsequent research has determined that the role of emotion in buying situations varies by individual and circumstance, but there’s no doubt that, overall, it’s a critical factor in consumer behaviour. And while it’s important to feel an emotional tie to the place you live in (it can inspire everything from maintaining the house properly to caring about your

community), abandoning your inner Mr. Spock and his logic isn’t wise. Take aspiration, for example. We judge a potential purchase in part by whether we think it will represent what we would like to be and how we’d like to be perceived. An empty nester, however, might actually be happier staying in peaceful suburbia instead of buying a loft in a noisy downtown area just because he fancies himself a youngagain urban hipster. As well, we fall victim to confirmation bias, the pervasive tendency to cherry pick or interpret information that confirms our preconceptions. We fall in love with a house and so we dismiss the mouldy smell, saying the place just needs a little airing out. We also readily become invested psychologically in a property before we’ve reached a rational decision, according to professor Michael J. Seiler, who specializes in behavioural real estate at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. “You’re looking at a house and suddenly start thinking of the community and the neighbours and how they’ll be your friends. Expectations, fears, desire for status — a lot of stuff influences you,” he says. “So be cautious, try to be rational.” Influences are at work before you ever enter a prospective home. Billboard, newspaper and other advertising, although frequently banal, fosters expectations, says Cotte.

If a builder advertises extensively, for example, you might make the illogical assumption that because the company spends oodles of money on advertising it must be profitable so it must be good. “It’s called accessibility bias,” she says. “The most accessible brands, the ones that immediately come to mind, we value as being positive.” Urbandale — a construction company based in Ottawa — general manager Matthew Sachs says when advertising, “you hook with emotion and reel in

with intellect.” A radio ad, for example, might ask, “Remember the first time you fell in love?” It would then segue from romantic love to love of a house, tack on some factual benefits — energy efficiency for example, although Sachs says that might be couched as “comfort” or “you’ll save money” — and exit with another emotional hook. When it comes to face-to-face sales, Sachs says Urbandale has no defined strategy except to listen closely to what the prospective

buyer wants. His advice to home hunters: “Excitement is important if you’re buying a house, but do your research. Validate and verify.” Eric Manherz, a Royal LePage real estate broker who works in Ottawa, says a good agent will help clients keep emotions in check and concentrate on finding what it is they really want. That, he says, takes time and may not be what they had originally thought. He also sees peer pressure at work. “People at coffee break say, ‘You should never of fer full price.’ In some cases, you should. And m ay b e t h o s e people bought years ago, when the market was different.” Because having too many choices usually means we make no choice, Manherz suggests after a day of house hunting to scratch most of what you’ve seen off your list. That will also help control what Cotte terms “anchoring and adjustment bias”: if you’ve seen 20 crummy houses and then one decent one, you’ll assess the decent one as being better than it is. And do not — repeat, do not — feel guilty for making your real estate agent troop around for days on end. And what if, by following all this advice, you feel you missed out on the “perfect” home? Says Manherz, “There’s always another opportunity.”
