Some bold colours can be decor duds Experiment with accessories prior to committing Megan Cole The Canadian Press VICTORIA — With bold paint colour becoming increasingly popular, many homeowners and interior designers are choosing to take the plunge with bright hues. Bold feature walls and painted rooms are being seen more on the pages of magazines and design websites, and Kyla Bidgood, registered interior designer, said more of her clients are asking for the same. “I think people have commitment issues with colour, but they want to experiment a little bit, and obviously the easiest way to do that is by not using paint,” she said. “You can use accessories, pillows, throw blankets or even area rugs to get pops of colour into a space without committing to paint your space.” But if you’re looking at expanding the splash of colour onto your walls, Bidgood said it is important

Even though many people perceive white as a neutral and boring colour, it can be an important addition to a space if furnishings, accessories and artwork are bright and bold. “White really draws your eye away from the wall to other fur-
nishing, art and patterns,” said Bidgood. “Navy blue and blacks make a piece of art with a white frame really pop, especially if the art is in a bright colour.” Bidgood said many people pick their paint colours based on the chip at the store. Instead of buying all your paint based on the
chip, Bidgood said take small paint samples of several variations of the colour. “It’s really about finding the right hue, so if you have a colour in mind chances are what it looks like on the chip is going to be different than how it looks on the wall,” she said.
“Get maybe three to five variations of the colour, and paint the swatches right on the wall and have a look at it in different types of lighting. Sit with it for a few days because you might have an idea of how it will look, but after a few days you may not love it as much anymore.” A common mistake Bidgood said people make when picking a wall colour is basing it on something they would choose in a fabric or piece of clothing. “It doesn’t necessarily translate to a larger surface like a wall,” she said. “When you’re picking a colour you often need to pick a colour that is slightly less intense because it is going to be very bold when you paint a large space.” When it comes to using bright paint colours in a home, a concern is often how it might affect the resale of the property. But whether you go bold or safe and neutral, Bidgood said you’re never going to create a space that everyone loves. “Chances are if you sell and someone moves in they will want to paint it again anyways,” she said. “If I were to buy a house that was all beige, I would definitely be looking to paint it. It’s not to say the neutrals are necessarily safe either.”

When the indoor air gets polluted linked to about 16 per cent of all lung cancer deaths in Canada. That makes radon the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. But even minor symptoms like headaches, feeling unusually tired, itching or burning eyes, irritated skin, nasal congestion, a dry throat or nausea could be due to your home’s indoor air quality. If you or anyone else in your home deals with these kinds of symptoms on a regular basis, the air inside your home might be making them sick. Even the materials that we use to build a house can lead to poor indoor air quality, like VOCs (volatile organic compounds) in paint and kitchen cabinets, or the adhesives and glues in carpeting and flooring. Some granite countertops have been known to emit radon, too. It makes sense since granite comes from the ground, where there’s also uranium. The good news is that more home inspection providers are starting to offer IAQ (indoor air quality (IAQ) and radon inspections. They’ll go through your entire house and ask you questions about your habits and lifestyle, just to get an idea of what’s normal and what’s not. They can also take an air sample, have it analyzed — even get a mould spore count — and send you a report. You can add a radon or IAQ inspection to a full home inspection, or you can get it as a separate service. These types of inspections are becoming more important when it comes to making sure a home is safe and healthy. That’s why in Ontario Tarion now covers radon remediation for the full seven years of coverage. And the push is for more new-home warranty programs to

First-time home buyers can drive growth

CEO and President Canadian Home Builders’ Association – Saskatchewan The Canadian Home Builders’ Association met last week in Ottawa with government and opposition parties in the wake of the very successful Forum for Growth hosted on Parliament Hill in late May. While we continue to offer high marks for governments that commit to sustaining the economy and action plans to keep the country strong on a global scale, there are specific issues that will clearly ease the burden on young families seeking home ownership. Attention to issues such as productivity, debt-toGDP ratio and expanding markets for Canadian goods and services is without a doubt a direction for long-term nation building. It is concerning, though, when politics and perceived public opinion drive government agendas more than practical public policy considerations that benefit the Canadians that are most in need of a hand up. The residential construction industry is committed to engaging communities in economic development to benefit individuals, communities, regions and industry in Saskatchewan. It is committed to professionalism and unrelenting in its desire to ensure there is a place to call home for everyone, a job to build esteem that helps one have and keep that home, and opportunities for everyone to share the fruits of Canada and Saskatchewan. New home buyers can fuel sustainable growth for the long-term. Some have argued recently there are hardships for these buyers as a result of the Bank of Canada’s changes to mortgage amortization term limits last year. We would be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge the federal government and the Finance Department have been more than able stewards of the country’s fiscal affairs. Most recently, too, the government announced a special forum to deal with housing issues in Canada, which is most welcome by the industry. Debates and attention to issues such as affordability and homelessness abound lately, and there are real solutions to address areas of the market that are challenged by some of the policy changes. While we feel it would be wrong to abandon the fiscally prudent approach to regulations within the banking system and monetary policy overall, we also feel it is well worth considering the merit, economic benefit and potential cata-

lyst derived from returning to the 30-year amortization limit for at least new home buyers. Providing this incentive for access to home ownership encourages the construction industry and job creation, supports mobility in the marketplace that opens up the entry level market inventory, and facilitates the building of net worth for Canadians. All this is sound economic and social policy and improves the quality of life for many Canadians seeking better housing.
Made in Sask. policy There are many, many jobs available on saskjobs.ca, and more and more it is becoming clear there is no one approach that will address all labour market needs. Several policy changes and approaches proposed for a number of immigration programs add further to the labour market pressure felt in many communities in Western Canada. Indeed, we need to demand compliance and it is right to expect employers to respect the intentions of adaptive labour market opinions and the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. Some changes may indeed address abuses and loopholes, yet markets, regions and industries such as the construction industry that are experiencing shortages in skilled trades will pay the price because a few employers didn’t comply with the rules. It’s time to reward the majority of employers that are compliant and respectful of the workforce and that offer opportunities for Canadians to build careers in the industry. Canadians and people wanting to call Saskatchewan and Canada home for the most part do not abuse the system and neither do most employers. Let’s collaborate on an immigration strategy that address the differences in markets with flexible programs that still protect the interests of Canadians. We need to continue to work across the many regions in Canada to understand differences in both housing and labour market needs to identify and address priorities within policy considerations. Canada is so much more than a single labour market or a single housing market. In fact, there are dozens of housing markets and labour markets in urban centres and regions across Canada. Creating public policy in Canada is not easy, it is complex and diverse, and a one-size policy does not fit all regions. Support for new home buyers is key to addressing concerns on housing affordability and homelessness. The air inside your home plays a huge role in the way you and the rest of your family feel on a day-today basis. Most of us worry about the air quality outside. We have smog advisories, air quality alerts, and it seems like every day I see something in the news about pollution or gas emissions. But you want to know the hard facts? The air inside your home can be two to five times more polluted than the air outside. In some cases, it’s 100 times worse! We are constantly exposed to pollution, toxins, pesticides, gases — even radon. Most of the time, these things get diluted into the air. But they can also find their way into homes through cracks in foundation walls and floors, through unfinished floors, windows, sumps, vents or gaps around pipes and drains. The problem is that when these pollutants get into our homes and can’t escape, they start to accumulate. In high concentrations, radon and other toxins can be big health risks. Radon is a radioactive gas that comes from uranium in the ground. Uranium is everywhere, and when uranium starts to break down it creates a gas. This gas is radon. The more uranium there is, the more radon there is. So chances are there are higher radon levels in areas where uranium is mined. Health Canada says radon is

do the same. Radon remediation can cost anywhere between $500 and $3,000. Sometimes installing a cap on sump pumps, boosting up the ventilation in your home with something like a heat recovery ventilator (HRV), or sealing foundation cracks and around pipes and drains is enough. But other times, it’s not. The most effective way to get rid of radon is a process called sub slab depressurization. That’s when a hole is drilled through the basement floor (concrete slab) and then a pipe is installed with a fan. What this does is draw radon gas from the ground and expel it through a vent, usually in the roof. If you need radon remediation, make sure you hire a contractor who has a lot of experience dealing with it — someone certified by the Canadian National Radon Proficiency Program (C-NRPP). When I uncover the mess I find behind walls, below floors and above ceilings I can see the problems. But what you don’t see can put you and your family at risk. And when it comes to poor indoor air and radon, they only way to know for sure is to test for it. Winter is the best time for testing because we keep our windows and doors shut, for the most part. This lets any toxins build up, which gives us a good reading on indoor air quality and radon levels. Now that the cold weather is approaching, make sure you can breathe easy in your home. Whimsical touches transform bungalow Architect kept busy with renos Nancy Rempel Postmedia News EDMONTON — When Norbert Lemermeyer’s 10-yearold grandson Yuri comes to visit, the first thing he does is check from room to room to see what grandpa has been up to. Lemermeyer is a retired architect, and his passion for playful experimentation with design, colour and style is evident long before you enter his Edmonton home. Along the sidewalk in front of his 1950s bungalow are four tall black square columns supporting citruscoloured, wedge-shaped flags, an unusual feature that regularly causes passersby to take a second look. A pair of large concrete spheres straddle the pavingstone path which draws a visitor’s eyes to the home’s front doorway that’s covered by an A-shaped, glass canopy. “When you walk up to a door, it should have a shelter where you aren’t in the weather,” Lemermeyer says. He adds that using groups of columns, like those that form the flag gate, is one of his favourite design tools for defining smaller spaces within a large area. In the front entry, what he calls “horrid” walls have been torn down and the former living room has been transformed into a large dining area. The home’s evolution has been ongoing since Lemermeyer bought it just prior to marrying his wife Kristine almost 20 years ago. The pair has tackled one project each year, and Kristine has even accepted Norbert’s “no curtains” policy — everywhere but the master bedroom. “There are a lot of little vignettes,” Lemer meyer says, referring to the eclectic array of architectural styles throughout the home. An archway that provides access to the central hallway frames an enlarged, “realistically abstract” sketching by Lemer meyer’s favou-

Like many of the home’s visual displays, it has been printed onto several sections of lightweight foam board, and then hooked together by wire paper clips. The main wall that runs like a spine down the middle
of the home is painted in a startling combination of alternating horizontal lines of brick red and soft lime, each about 20 centimetres wide. Lemermeyer says the creation of the kitchen’s small dining nook was an experiment. Design tricks he used include subtle curves and a
twist on the traditional bay window. Two large pieces of glass create a triangle-shaped lookout that extends outside by roughly a metre to provide a panorama of the front and back yards. This bay overlooks a garden filled with tall yellow cone flowers and the backyard’s white, wavelike wooden fence that has been crowned with alucobond, a flexible aluminum. Tall potted cacti stretch to the ceiling from the window’s triangle-shaped ledge. A small, round table is covered in red and white polka-dots and the seating is on Czechoslovakian-style bentwood chairs. The flooring is the home’s original, stained oak, and blends beautifully with the muted Middle Eastern carpets Kristine brought to their union. One leads to the main-
floor washroom, which she says is now a favourite space. The outside wall has been extended and replaced by glass blocks. The wooden cupboards were updated with white paint and modern chrome handles. The patterned, tiled walls were inspired by architect Michael Graves, whose post-modern designs have either evoked admiration or disdain. The large, square, navy and robin’s-egg blue tiling is tied together by the white Brazilian marble countertop. To connect the home to its studio addition, a bedroom was divided to become Kristine’s walk-in closet, and to create a passageway into the large, open space that houses the studio and its loft. Numerous windows overlook a 60-year-old elm that erupts through the adjoining wooden porch to create a dazzling golden canopy on an autumn day. The couple enjoys spending time on the deck year-round, protected from the north winds by the strategically placed addition. In this partial courtyard, more groupings of columns — this time thick, round, poured-in-place concrete pillars and others composed of mesh-encased, polished field stones — create distinctive divisions of space. A large, round concretetopped table on wheels doubles as a sundial. The view reveals another whimsical creation — a tall, wooden “idiotic” tower he built for Yuri to play in. Asked if he would change anything, Lemermeyer laments not tearing down the original house to begin with. Otherwise, he says, this house has provided years of fun as a framework to build on and experiment with. Best of all, it still puts a smile on his face every day.

Now, it looks as though CIL agrees, sort of, while Benjamin Moore is going in a cooler direction. CIL announced Wednesday that it predicts a mellow yellow — a softer version than Sico’s choice — will take the spotlight in interior decor. “Next year’s standout colour can best be described as a butter
cream yellow, a war m pastel shade that has a fullness to it, but is still light enough to act as a neutral,” spokeswoman Alison Goldman says in a release naming CIL’s Creamy (50YY 77/285) as the brand’s 2014 colour of the year. “It’s a soft, buttery colour that emits a feeling of calm, tranquillity and renewal.” She says that as we continue to try to retreat from our busy lives, “it’s a very easy-to-live-with colour, continuously delivering a ray of warmth no matter what the weather outside.”
