Redhead Equipment By Rachele Odnokon For L-P Specialty Products

unveils new building

Redhead Equipment has always been dedicated to providing the best in customer service. That is why they are proud to unveil a new facility that enables them to better serve their customers’ needs. Until recently, Redhead Equipment had two locations in Regina: one for the construction division and one for the truck and trailer division. As Wade Sandoff, Product Support sales manager, explained, that set-up was outdated for the growing demands of their customers. “Having two separate facilities made it difficult for our customers with multiple lines of business to purchase and service their equipment with us efficiently. In addition, it created a physical separation amongst our own staff that was holding us back from creating a cohesive workforce. By adding this additional space, not only can we accommodate our customers’ service needs, but it allows for future business growth, as well,” Sandoff said. Construction on the new Redhead Equipment Regina Head Office facility began in September 2012 on the 43.4-acre fenced yard site, located between Emerald Park and Regina on Highway #1 East. The location was chosen along a major highway route, as all Redhead Equipment branches have been, to create even greater access for their customer base. The facility opened for business in September 2013, and since opening, Redhead Equipment has received numerous compliments from customers on the building and the convenience it affords. The new building features a total useable square footage of 117,000 and includes, on the main floor, a Mack Truck and Trailer shop on the west side, a center sales/showroom and parts warehouse area, and an east shop for Volvo and Case Construction. The second floor houses the head office, accounting, lunchroom, training room, customer lounge, and board and meeting rooms, plus a warehouse area. Both shops are equipped with radiant heat, make-up air units, exhaust systems and T5 lighting. The truck shop is equipped with lube pit, overhead crane, truck-lifting system and a total of 27 bays, including a wash and welding bay. The construction shop has 27 mechanical bays with a wash and welding bay that features a five- and 10-tonne overhead crane. The rear part’s shipping and receiving area also includes a ground-level sealed dock for winter use, an imperative in Saskatchewan. “The facilities are state-of-the-art with Wi-Fi for customer and staff needs, cameras, electronic gates and security system. As well, to improve flow of information, troubleshooting capabilities and customer service, all our technicians use laptops to order parts, look up bulletins, repair procedures and other administrative duties,” Sandoff said.

“I’ve worked with Redhead for 19 years. It’s been good service and good salespeople over the years. Their response to customers and their service is excellent; they just kind of drop everything when I bring my trucks in and they get it fixed and I’m out the door. They treat me good — you don’t get too many businesses like that. They were the first ones to ever sell me a truck, and it’s been a good relationship ever since.”

Redhead Equipment invites everyone to attend from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the new location, with a short ceremony taking place at 1 p.m. The event will include: a barbecue lunch; STARS helicopter landing; speeches from the Minister of Highways and Infrastructure, Reeve of RM of Edenwold and STARS VP; cheque presentation; equipment demos; office tours; door prizes; and discounts. For more information, contact Redhead Equipment toll free at 800-667-7710, or visit them online at www.redheadequipment.ca.

“It is more than the quality of the product that brings us to Redhead Equipment time after time; they have the experienced staff that is key to a successful company. The Redhead team has always conducted business with our company in a friendly and honest manner. Redhead Equipment understands the needs of the contractor — machine availability, parts in stock and repair service when required. They make the extra effort to keep our units working. “Redhead Equipment is a first-class operation, dedicated to providing sales, parts and service from a wide range of quality equipment lines throughout the province to all types of contractors, whether big or small. The company has played a significant role in the building of Saskatchewan’s infrastructure with the contractor use of their product lines. “Our relationship with Redhead Equipment spans more than 30 years, and it is a relationship we value, built on mutual respect and values. Congratulations to Gary, his family and all the sales and support staff on the opening of their new Regina facility. We are confident they will continue to provide the excellent dealer representation that the Redhead name has become synonymous with.”

The power of choice

After 65 years, Redhead Equipment continues to grow with its customers By Rachele Odnokon For L-P Specialty Products Redhead Equipment has been serving the province of Saskatchewan for over 65 years. Throughout that time, the company has earned a reputation for delivering only the highest-quality products and exceptional service. That’s because, as president and CEO Gary Redhead explained, the family-owned and operated business has always been committed to one thing: community. From its inception in 1948 under the name of W.F. Fuller Machinery Limited to becoming Redhead Equipment in 1968 when it was purchased by long-time employee Gordon Redhead, the business has remained dedicated to the province and to its customers. Gary Redhead has been working for the company since 1969. As Gordon’s son, Gary developed a passion for the business and bought out his father’s interest in Redhead Equipment in 1980, ensuring it would stay in the family and, more importantly, stay true to the values it had come to represent. As Gary explained, “Redhead Equipment is proud to be a Saskatchewan company that focuses on serving the businesses and people of Saskatchewan. Our equipment lines are some of the best equipment manufactured in the world today, and are backed by a dealership that is totally committed to achieving 100 per cent customer satisfaction. This is what differentiates us as a leader in the marketplace.” Originally a Champion Motor Grader Dealer, Redhead Equipment has continuously adapted and diversified its operations over the years to meet the increased demands of the industry. Since establishing their full product line in 1991, they have grown from a $20 million company to one with sales figures reaching the $450 million mark in 2014. Today they are the exclusive dealer of Case Construction Equipment, Volvo Construction Equipment, Mack Trucks and Tigercat Forestry Equipment in Saskatchewan, as well as the exclusive dealer of Case IH agriculture equipment in Saskatoon, Swift Current, Estevan and Lloydminster. “We have experienced ongoing growth thanks to the belief of our customers in our service and the equipment we offer. In the past few years, specifically, we’ve seen many new innovations that are streamlining the way our customers interact with our products. Both large-scale changes such as the creation of mDrive, an automated manual transmission for Mack Trucks and small-scale changes as in industry-first side lighting on our Case skid steer loaders to help you get more work done,” Gary said. To better serve growing business, in 2007 Redhead Equipment opened a new facility in Saskatoon, amalgamating the two former branches into one state-of-the-art facility. As Gary explained, the new facility was a game changer, allowing Redhead Equipment to provide a diversified clientele with one-stop shopping and inspiring the construction of yet another new building in Regina last fall. The newly constructed 117,000-squarefoot Regina location on Highway 1 East will be hosting its official grand opening on June 4, 2014, and Gary is looking forward to showcasing the achievement with the industry.

“We pride ourselves on being a ‘one-stop shop,’ and with the creation of this new facility, we literally have that now.”

— Gary Redhead

With locations in Regina, Saskatoon, Swift Current, Estevan and Lloydminster, Redhead Equipment has grown into one of the largest equipment dealers in Saskatchewan. A lot has been accomplished in these past 65 years, but this province’s recent success has the company brimming with optimism for the future. “It’s often overused in the media that Saskatchewan has what the world needs, but this is true. As the provincial economy continues to grow in the next 15 years and beyond, Redhead Equipment will be committed to expand alongside it. Our mission is to get our customers’ products to market, regardless of industry, so if there is a type of equipment we need to source to make that happen or a location we need to be in to meet our customers’ demand, we’ll be there,” Gary said. However, as Gary explained, it’s not just about the equipment; it’s about giving back to the communities that support you, something Redhead Equipment has demonstrated to a variety of local and national charities, aboriginal communities, and amateur sports in the province. Most notably, Redhead Equipment has made $1 million donations to both the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan and STARS Air Ambulance. As Gary explained, “Success is not measured in dollar figures alone. To know you have made a positive impact in a community pays dividends that are immeasurable.” At Redhead Equipment, being a part of your community is what they know best.

“We pride ourselves on being a ‘one-stop shop,’ and with the creation of this new facility, we literally have that now. Redhead Equipment is one brand, one building and one team. Since moving all of our offerings under one roof, our customers continue to comment on the ease of doing business with us now,” Gary said. The development of these buildings also speaks to the company’s slogan “The power of choice,” Gary explained. “We wanted our customers to be aware of the fact we sell agricultural, construction and forestry equipment, as well as trucks and trailers. Though the reference to power speaks to the equipment itself, it also describes empowerment of a customer who can buy his agricultural machinery from us, as well as a truck to haul grain and a skid steer for his yard,” Gary said. Despite changes over the years, Redhead Equipment has continued to offer the same quality service to their ever-growing customer base. As Gary explained, the changes reflect that continued dedication to ensure customers’ diverse and evolving needs are met. “Though our provincial footprint and product lines have evolved over time, more importantly, our values have remained the same. We’re in the business of relationships, which means getting to know our customers is our number one focus. By truly caring about their needs, we’re able to provide exceptional customer service that contributes to their success,” Gary said. This exceptional customer service is thanks in large part to Redhead Equipment’s dedication to providing a safe, fulfilling and positive work environment. Employing over 425 staff in five locations and a management team with over 300 years of combined experience, Redhead Equipment prides itself in its ability to attract and retain great people. As Gary explained, the management and staff have been integral to the company’s success. “Our continued growth is supported by investing in both our facilities and our staff. Although the needs of our employees have changed over the years, we have always kept our team members’ well-being as top priority. We provide the most up-to-date training through an annual service training budget of well over $1 million. Our focus on safety is also second to none, thanks to initiatives such as having a health and safety advisor on staff and pre-site access requirements for our service area. These initiatives for staff retention not only ease training costs, but create valuable relationships with our customers, as they can have the same contact at Redhead Equipment throughout the life of their equipment,” Gary said.

Your one-stop shop

From sales to service, Redhead Equipment offers you only the best By Rachele Odnokon For L-P Specialty Products One province. One company. One contact. For multi-line businesses that deal within the agriculture, construction and transportation industries, Redhead Equipment is the only heavy-equipment dealer in Saskatchewan that is your one-stop shop for all your equipment needs. Redhead Equipment is a company focused on keeping customers on the move. By providing the highest-quality truck and trailer products, with the most comprehensive warranty backed by dealerships across Saskatchewan, Redhead Equipment truly stands out above all other competition. As Ron Duda, Truck Sales manager, explained, nothing demonstrates this more than Redhead Equipment’s heavy-duty truck offering, Mack Trucks. “We are very proud to be the exclusive Mack Truck dealer in Saskatchewan. All Mack Trucks feature unprecedented low-end torque power and best-in-class fuel economy. Used extensively for hauling all types of trailers, you’ll find them everywhere from construction sites to the oil patch,” Duda said. In addition to Mack Trucks, Redhead Equipment also carries a select line of trailers that have been hand-picked in order to deliver the right hauling equipment for Redhead Equipment’s diverse customer needs. The trailers they carry include BWS EZ-2-Load, Dakota and NeuStar, and cover a variety of needs from equipment trailers, to forestry, construction and tagalong trailers, to aluminum grain trailers and end-dump gravel trailers. When asked what he feels truly sets Redhead Equipment apart from other dealers, Duda explained that it is the unbelievable effort his staff puts forward in keeping customers running. “We strive to help all our customers achieve the best up-time possible, meaning their truck is up and running, on time, every time,” Duda said. Redhead Equipment has a special relationship with the community and the industry. “We stay very active through our industry associations to make sure we are in touch with the industry and our customers’ needs. We are involved in all the industry trade groups, from the STA [Saskatchewan Trucking Association] to the SHCA [Saskatchewan Heavy Construction Association], SRMC [Saskatchewan Ready Mix Concrete Association] and more,” Duda said.

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations REDHEAD EQUIPMENT on your new building!

Though Redhead Equipment is an active contributor to the community through donations and sponsorship funding, as Duda explained, something most people do not often consider is how the trucking industry impacts the community and the economy as a whole. “Everything you consume, whether it’s the groceries you’re eating to the lumber materials used to fix your house, anything you buy from a store at some point has been hauled in a truck. The trucking industry affects everyone on a daily basis, and Redhead Equipment is an integral part of the process by providing support to trucking companies, ensuring all of those products get delivered. The

trucking industry is a vital part of our economy, so that has a huge effect on the community,” Duda said. Redhead Equipment also boasts an industry-leading Construction Division that serves contractors of all sizes, as well as the government sector. Redhead Equipment is proud to be the exclusive Case Construction Equipment and Volvo Construction Equipment dealer in Saskatchewan. As Craig Slobodian, Corporate CE sales manager, explained, Case and Volvo are innovators that have a long history of revolutionizing the construction industry. “Case Construction shows their strength through their products and leading-edge technology. Their advanced engines improve your bottom line by increasing your efficiency and productivity. Volvo Construction is the global leader in Articulated haulers, have some of the most respected mining equipment in the industry, and their excavators and wheel loaders feature fuel economy that’s second to none. We’ve also seen success with Volvo’s subsidiaries, including selling the first SDLG wheel loader in North America,” he said. As Slobodian explained, Redhead Equipment owes its success not only to the unique product lines they feature, but also to the care and support they offer throughout the lifetime of their equipment. “An old adage in the industry is ‘Sales sells the first one and Parts and Service sell the second.’ Redhead Equipment is known for its exceptional product support. We have strategic locations in the province, huge state-of-the-art facilities and the people to get the job done,” Slobodian said. Not only does Redhead Equipment employ 75 staff within the Regina branch’s Parts and Service department alone, but they also have the most service trucks in the province, manned by factory-trained technicians. They also offer Techline, an in-house call centre that provides province-wide, on-call service for all areas of the business, available free of charge on all new equipment purchases. Redhead Equipment is very appreciative to the communities of Saskatchewan for supporting it for all these years, Slobodian explained. “It wasn’t always the case, but Saskatchewan is the place to be. The province and its communities have seen record growth in recent years. Thanks to our customers, Redhead Equipment, too, has seen record growth. Partnered with these customers, we have been able to contribute directly to this growth in areas like building roads, houses, new infrastructure, mining megaprojects, and we have brought many new employees to the province. We thank the people of Saskatchewan for their support and for allowing us to grow and succeed with them,” Slobodian said.

Redhead Equipment employees are experts in uptime By Mike Shiplack For L-P Specialty Products Competition in the agriculture, truck and construction industries is fierce. As Saskatchewan’s economy continues to grow, demand for a reliable, well-built machine is critical to success. But having the right machine for the job is not as important as one might think. The reality is that the performance and dependability of a machine are based on the people who stand behind it. And at Redhead Equipment, that is what makes all the difference. Whether it’s a Mack semi truck, a Case skid steer or a Volvo Grader, what makes the difference are the mechanics who are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the parts department manager who delivers direct to the farm at 10 p.m. at night, and the young kid who scrubs every square inch of that 35-foot dump truck. Redhead Equipment never cuts any corners when it comes to using the right tool for the job, and that includes always hiring the right team. The results speak for themselves. Customers who trust Redhead Equipment avoid the most feared word in construction, agriculture and trucking: downtime. “Every piece of equipment and every truck that we sell to our customers means that we are responsible to help keep them running. This isn’t just a breakdown; we’re talking about people’s livelihoods,” explained Ron Duda, Redhead Equipment’s Corporate Sales manager for Mack Trucks. “If someone’s truck is down, they’re not generating revenue. It’s also a double whammy because there’s also a shop bill that comes along with it — unless it’s under warranty. This affects the service our customer is giving their customers because now other people are waiting on us to get that truck or machine back up and running.” That’s why employees of Redhead Equipment are experts in uptime. It’s the key to exceptional customer service in all three industries (construction, agriculture and trucking). Uptime for Redhead Equipment is delivered in a variety of ways. There are new success stories every month of a technician driving late at night just to help get something like a wheel loader up and running. Redhead’s customers work 24 hours a day, and so does Redhead. If a machine goes down, it affects everyone.

“When I started with Redhead, it was nowhere near the size it is today. We have seen tremendous growth in the last few years, and our customers have grown with us, too. I have a lot of clients who simply started off with a skid steer, and now they have rock trucks, large excavators and a whole fleet of vehicles. That’s what makes me the proudest, when a company has grown with long-term employees and its customers. There are still lots of new faces here at Redhead, but there are plenty of old faces, too,” said Wolfe. Long-term employees are another way that Redhead Equipment delivers on uptime. It’s also what sets them apart from their competitors. It might sound simple, but having employees that care is not a trait that’s easy to come by. However, the results speak for themselves. Machines are built better, the service is faster and there’s a commitment to detail that can save hundreds of hours in downtime throughout the year. “When I started here, one of the things I looked at was the longservice awards,” said Cory Hallett, Human Resources manager. “I was really impressed with the amount of people that have been here for 10, 20, 30 years or more. I think it’s the way everyone is treated here. The management teams at Redhead do the right things for the right reasons because it makes sense. They look after their people, and the community.”

Another way Redhead Equipment delivers on uptime is by having reliable expert staff on hand to best diagnose and fix any problem the minute it happens. Larrie Strecker, who has been a Mack Truck technician for 41 years — 23 of which have been with Redhead Equipment — is the perfect example. “I’m no different from the person who fixes your car, except the work is heavier,” said Strecker. “Mack has always kept up with releasing newer engines and transmissions, and there are always new training programs that keep the work interesting. Everything is computerized now — which I’m not too happy about — but I go to the new guys for information, they come to me for information, and we help each other out quite a bit. Redhead Equipment is not afraid to pay people if they know what they’re doing.”

PROUD TO BE YOUR NEW DEALER OF SDLG WHEEL LOADERS.

Between trucks and trailers, agriculture and construction, Redhead Equipment employees find plenty of opportunity to learn new skills, and even discover new careers without leaving the office. When Dean Wolfe, territory sales manager for Regina and Moose Jaw, joined the Redhead Equipment family back in 1984, he was washing and painting equipment in the service bay. He started apprenticing in the shop until he earned enough hours and experience to become a journeyman mechanic. Wolfe then moved on to shop foreman and eventually service manager, and now he’s a territory manager that oversees multi-million-dollar budgets.

Continued from page 5 By setting such a high standard on personal relationships, Redhead Equipment gives every employee first-hand experience in how customers need to be treated on a daily basis. With only three and a half years with the company, Hallett is one of the newer faces at Redhead Equipment. It’s his job to ensure the needs of 425 employees in five facilities across Saskatchewan are looked after, so every employee can then look after the uptime of every customer that depends on Redhead Equipment. “We don’t have people that are looking at the clock; we are driven by a sense of urgency for our customers and their needs. That’s the commitment we have to our customers, and that’s the way we treat our employees, as well,” said Hallett. Redhead Equipment focuses on helping their customers be successful. To do that, they work hard and go beyond the regular 9-to-5 work week. Redhead Equipment relies on their employees to find solutions, even when that solution is not the easiest answer. The result is an organization that puts the customer first, and a team of long-term employees who aren’t afraid to get the job done. That’s what makes Redhead Equipment masters of uptime.

“I’ve been working with Redhead for just about 30 years because of their excellent service and customer appreciation. I’ve dealt with a bunch of different dealers, and Redhead is the best there is. They have way better service, they address my needs far better, they’re more responsive to my requests and they’re overall just excellent. If I ever have a machine that goes down, or if I need a machine, I can go in there and get just about anything I want at the spur of the moment; they’ve always been able to fulfill our needs. And no questions asked — they look after us.”

— Emerson Koch

“I’ve been buying Mack since 1964 — I was dealing with Regina Mack before Redhead took over. And when Redhead took over, I continued to deal with them. It’s been nothing but positive. I’ve never had a problem with Redhead that wasn’t resolved; it wasn’t always 100 per cent my way, but it was always 100 per cent understood. You just couldn’t have a better relationship with a dealer than what I have with Redhead. I don’t deal with other people for trucks, but I do deal with other people for all other lines of equipment, and Redhead would be number one even there. They’re just a straightforward company, and it’s mainly because of the people. In my opinion, it couldn’t be better.”
