Bland to bold — make a vivid first impression Front door’s colour can be transforming Diana Marszalek The Associated Press When Tracy Proctor Williamson bought her house in Larchmont, N.Y., a year ago, it was “just a kind of dark and sad-looking building.” The front door and trim were a depressing “yucky cream colour,” says Williamson. The town assessor categorized the architecture of the two-story brick home simply as “old style.” Since then, Williamson has tried to bring the house back to life, most notably by boosting its mood with a sun-kissed yellow front door. “At first I was horrified because I thought the neighbours would hate me,” she

says. “But I like it. It makes me feel really good.” Painting the front door a colour that packs a punch is one of the quickest and easiest ways to change a house’s look and help it stand out from the rest. “It’s the difference between choosing classic red or something that has a little bit of fuchsia in it — something more like the colour you love,” says Kate Smith, a Newport, R.I., colour consultant. “Just that little bit of colour can give you the lift that makes everything look better.” Smith — whose job includes advising everyone from paint companies to the film industry on colour choices — says homeowners like Williamson are making the right move by making bland front doors bold. As the entryway to your home, a front door should be an attention-getter, she says. “You want it to be the focal point,” she says. Empha-

sizing the front door can “improve the look of the entire house.” Smith tells people selling their homes that if they “can’t do anything else, put some time and energy into your front door.” The trick, however, is getting it right; it can be a fine line between bold, eye-catching colour and neon that looks better on paper than on doors or walls. Smith advises choosing a front-door colour that jibes with your home’s other features, starting with the style and colour of the roof. The colours of fixed features, such as window grids, as well as trim and shutters should also be considered. So should a home’s architectural style. Derek Fielding, who oversees product development for the door manufacturer Therma-Tru, sees a trend toward colourful front doors and spiced-up entryways. “People don’t want that cookie-cutter look that

comes with having the same door that’s on everybody else’s house,” Fielding says. Besides adding colour, homeowners are opting for doors with different textures, more ornamental detail and decorative glass, he says. “It’s all about curb appeal and perceived value,” Fielding says. “If you look at a neighbourhood and every house has a six-panel door that is black, the one that is painted red is going to pop.” Smith says the most popular front-door colours this year are tropical blues, vibrant oranges, violet, mustards and plums. Those who want to perk things up but stay more subdued are choosing blues a notch brighter than navy, warm reds and classic greys, she says. Williamson worried initially that painting her door bright yellow was going to make her house “look like a bumblebee,” but that in fact “the lemon yellow is really nice,” particularly on grey days.

Like many Reginans, I’ll be home for Christmas cess moisture, which can damage your new home if not managed. It is important to use your home ventilation system to control moisture. In a typical home, over 20 litres of water are added to the indoor environment every day. That’s 7,300 litres in a year. Bathroom fans, kitchen range hoods and packaged ventilators such as heat-recovery ventilators are specifically installed in your home to help control moisture. Regular use of your ventilation system will exhaust excess airborne moisture caused by bathing, showering, doing laundry and cooking. Also, keep the relative humidity in the range of 30 to 45 per cent. Lower humidity levels may affect your health and cause things made of wood to shrink. Excess humidity can cause condensation on windows and damage the surrounding wall. Repair leaky pipes and fixtures immediately. Clean and completely dry any areas that are dampened or wet within 48 hours. Keep storage areas tidy so that air circulates freely. Purchase a hygrometer to monitor the humidity in your home. If you have added a hot tub to your home, or have a large collection of plants, consider the amount of moisture they will add and ventilate accordingly. Never vent your

Bathing in a blissful bathroom The home spa is all the rage Sheila Brady Postmedia News The emergence of the private home spa may cut into business at popular retreats, says designer Nathan Kyle of Astro Design Centre in Ottawa. Some homeowners are ready to pay for the luxury, with limestone tubs hitting $5,400 and premium, oversized steam showers costing $11,000. The ensuite, that bathroom retreat attached to the master bedroom, has become the next hot design button after the kitchen, says Ernst Hupel, co-owner of 2H Interior Design in Ottawa, who designed a wonderfully decadent bathroom for a family. “It’s all about healthy living,” he says. The ensuite features a curved, free-standing tub set into an alcove surrounded by windows, and a delicate shell-encrusted chandelier that Hupel found in Texas. There is an oversized shower, and the wall-mount-

Much ado about his loo with a whole lot of dew Samantha Pynn Postmedia News Q: The second bathroom in our condo, my husband’s bathroom, is in bad shape. The tile stops halfway up the wall, and the paint above the tiles is peeling. The fronts of our cabinet doors are also peeling. The tub, toilet and sink are off-white, but look yellow and dirty. I don’t have a lot of time or money to spend on this project. Can you just tell me what tiles to use that will look good? Can you tell me your fail-safe combinations in the bathroom? A: Love that “fail-safe combinations” makes it sound like there’s a spy mission going down in the bathroom! I absolutely have my “go-to” decorating conventions. But let’s talk about the moisture problem in your bathroom. Peeling cabinetry veneer is a sign that there has been way too much moisture in

your bathroom for a long period of time. I’m guessing there’s no bathroom window. Even if there is, who wants to open a window while showering in sub-zero weather? More than likely your bathroom fan isn’t working properly. You may want to unscrew the fan vent to see if there is some kind of obstruction. But you’ll probably need a new fan with a higher cubic-feet-per-minute (CFM) rating. The better the rating, the more air a fan will move. According to contractor Colin Hunter, “you’ll need a higher CFM if you have a longer vent run.” If your fan vents directly outside the wall of the bathroom, you have a shorter vent run. If your fan vents at the front of your home 14-feet from your bathroom, you have a longer vent run. “A rinky-dink fan won’t blow air from one end of your home to another and better quality fans make less noise,” says Hunter.

While we’re on the topic of fans, I’m a big one of tiling the whole bathroom with floor-to-ceiling subway tile. At 49 cents per tile in a small space, it’s not a big investment. Plus, you won’t have to worry about peeling walls. The photo here is of a quickie basement bathroom makeover using my triedand-true favourites. Marble hexagon tiles or penny rounds with dove-grey grout always look great on the floor and help hide dust bunnies. I like this particular hexagon from Home Depot (homedepot.ca) because it costs $10 per square foot. But I also like that in addition to the grey veining, there’s quite a bit of brown in the tile which picks up on the vanity. I’ve used dozens of Godmorgon vanities from Ikea (ikea. ca) because they look luxe at a low price point. They start at $299 for a two-drawer cabinet. I also prefer this vanity’s deep drawers to cabinet doors in small bathrooms be-

cause you can pull the drawers out to see everything at a glance instead of crawling to Narnia to find shampoo or toilet paper. If you want to keep things looking crisp and clean, stick with a truewhite tub, toilet and sink, but avoid white floors. A bright-white-tiled bathroom floor means you’ll see every spec of dust and dirt. As far as lighting goes, I like the flattering light of sconces flanking a mirror. But if your bathroom is super-tiny, the petite mid-century-modern Stella sconce ($225 US) in the photo is from Rejuventation (rejuventation.com) and provides a soft light that won’t highlight wrinkles and dark circles or send you running for shots of Botox. Winter is the most popular season for household fires. A lot of it has to do with using different heat sources, like fireplaces and space heaters, cooking more, or holiday decorations such as Christmas trees, unsafe lighting and candles. That’s why it’s especially important we make sure our smoke detectors are working and that we minimize the potential for fires around the house. Fireplaces: Annual fireplace and chimney inspections should be part of your regular home maintenance. Every working chimney’s flue must be inspected and cleaned every year — no exceptions. Creosote is extremely combustible. It’s basically tiny unburned flammable particles that build up on the inside of your chimney’s walls. All you need is a tiny spark and you can have total ignition. Cook it simple: If you have never fried a turkey before, don’t use the holidays as your test run. According to one home insurance company, there are three times more turkey fryer claims over the holidays. A lot of people get inspired to try new recipes around this season, but if it involves equipment you’ve never used and techniques you have never done, save the trial run for when you have more time and less things to worry about. T r e e s : Whether your Christmas tree is real or not, use flame-resistant materials when decorating,

Fire safety is important all year round, but especially during the holiday season when the potential for household fires increases. and make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source such as fireplaces, candles, radiators, heat vents and lights. When you go to bed or leave the house, turn off any lights or electronic decorations on the tree. If you have an artificial tree it should be fire-retardant (check the label). If you have the real thing, watch for dry needles, which pose a fire hazard. Once the needles start to drop, it’s the beginning of the end and you’re going to have to get rid of the tree soon. Check with your local community to find a proper Christmas tree recycling program. Outdoor outlets: If you don’t have outdoor outlets, keep the lights inside. Don’t run them through windows from indoor outlets. And extension cords — even the ones made for use outdoors

— are definitely fire hazards if they’re pinched by something like closed windows. The pinching breaks the wires inside, which then overheat, melting the rubber cord insulation and potentially starting a fire. For the long run, invest in getting proper weather-rated GFCI-protected outdoor outlets installed by a licensed professional. Extension cords: Extension cords are temporary solutions at best. I would avoid using them altogether, but if you do use them, make sure they’re compatible with your lights or whatever other device you plan on using it for. Also, if you’re going to use an extension cord outside, make sure the outside jacket of the extension cord is rated for exterior use and the wire gauge is rated for what you plan on plugging

into the extension cord. I’d go with one that is at least 14-gauge outdoor rated. Lights. Holiday lights are a big fire hazard. Replace any lights with frayed or damaged cords, and choose LEDs whenever possible. They’re brighter, more energy-efficient, don’t overheat as much and cause fewer fuses to burn out than traditional bulbs. You can safely connect more strings of LED lights together than you can those with traditional bulbs, usually a maximum of five strings of lights as opposed to three. However, always read instructions and warning labels. If the lights are going outside, plug them into a GFCI-protected outlet only, so if moisture gets in it will trip the circuit. When the holidays are over, take the lights down. Outdoor holiday lights aren’t meant to be outside all year round — two months max. They will wear out faster, plus the cold weather causes the wiring in string lights to become brittle, making them vulnerable to damage. Damaged wiring is a fire risk, so don’t set yourself up for disaster next year. Too many homeowners put too much pressure on themselves to make the holidays perfect — the perfect gifts, meal, decorations and lighting. Unfortunately, that kind of pressure can also lead to mistakes, shortcuts and safety mishaps. To me, the perfect holiday season is a safe one. How to host the holidays in a condo Marilyn Wilson For Postmedia News Though you may not think your Christmas traditions will change with condo life, the configuration of condo living may alter some aspects of the celebration. For instance, the limited storage space in a condo unit will influence the way you decorate. And, while a condo Christmas party is a delightful way to celebrate the holidays, there are certain logistical details to consider when hosting an event in this space.

The trees Many families have a Christmas tradition of picking out a tree together and hauling it home. This becomes somewhat more difficult when you are not going from garage to living room, but rather from parking garage to elevator to condo unit. This is why it’s important to plan the time you pick out your tree around when the service elevator will be free. You may also consider a

This service enables you to have a real tree delivered, then picked up after the holiday, thereby saving you time, energy and exasperation. If you don’t mind swapping out a real fir for a fake one, easier self-transport is guaranteed, as the artificial version can be disassembled. Despite the fact that it’s cleaner, an artificial tree requires storage the rest of the year, which may be a disadvantage for owners of units. However, it’s also more environmentally friendly than the alternative. Whichever you opt for, be sure to take measures for proper fire safety. This means keeping real trees watered rather than dried out, keeping candles far from trees and ensuring other decorations — such as stockings — are far from your fireplace.

Life has a funny way of changing. When I bought my first house, I was a single professional. It was my own little private oasis. A home I thought I’d own forever. But about five years in, I fell in love, my boyfriend moved in and I acquired a charming new stepson and the need for more space. . So I decided to sell. In doing so, I fully anticipated the stress of moving (rated the third-most stressful life event) — but not the stress of selling. If you are contemplating listing your home, heed these tips:

They constructed a structural “biohome” to simulate a man-made space bubble. Built entirely of synthetic materials, at first it was so flooded with toxins that visitors quickly complained of sore eyes and breathing problems. After adding 15 air-cleaning houseplants, however, within days the toxins cleared enough that visitors no longer showed any symptoms of exposure. Airbor ne toxins aren’t just NASA’s problem. Alarmingly, the materials we live with every day infuse our household air with a cocktail of toxins. Ubiquitous nasties such as formaldehyde are found in pressed wood, paint, carpets and drapes to name just a few. New homes are particularity affected as toxins tend to emit less gas over time. NASA recommends two average-size air-cleaning plants per 100 square feet of home, and more if you’re doing renovations involving particle board or paint. Here are a few of their top toxin removers: Boston fern: The oldest houseplant in the world is also one of the most efficient toxin and mould filters. Ferns’ high transpiration rate makes them virtuosos at devouring formaldehyde as they increase relative humidity around them. Boston ferns have been popular since the Victorian era and thrive in moderately lit rooms. Peace lily: This lowlight plant gobbles up the carcinogen benzene as it off-gases from fabrics and paint, so it’s a good one to have around during renovations. Put one near your entertainment centre so it can suck up the acetone that electronics emit. Bamboo palm: Also called reed

1. Declutter well in advance. Even before your Realtor sets an eye on your home — and at least a month prior to listing — confront your basement and open your closets. Take off the filtered glasses that prevent you from seeing the clutter you’ve accumulated over the years. Toss out, recycle and donate. 4. Expect tears Selling is an emotional experience, regardless of why you’re selling — and especially if it’s your first home. So if the tears start flowing, take a moment to honour the happy memories you have of living in your home. And then embrace all the possibilities that lie ahead.
