Where life really does make sense By Jessica Mees L-P Specialty Products or the mayor of Swift Current, the pillars of the slogan “Where life makes sense” say a lot in regards to how important safety, quality education, health care, accessibility, recreation and culture are to the community. “I always say we should strive to be a community that offers many of the amenities of larger cities, but with the safety, security and friendliness of typical Saskatchewan communities,” said mayor Jerrod Schafer. “Employment and quality of life are two major factors in where people choose to live and by doing all we can to accommodate the growth of business to supply us with jobs, the quality of life and the amenities we have here really make this a fantastic place to live.” As the hub of the Southwest, Swift Current is close to many tourism destinations in the region, such as Cypress Hills, Fort Walsh, the Great Sandhills and Grasslands National Park. There is never a dull moment in and around town. “Our community offers great bang for the tourist’s buck and gives plenty of options for things to do. There is no shortage of culture, ranging from our historic Lyric Theatre, active museum and art gallery to world class events such as Frontier Days, Windscape Kite Festival, Blenders, Long Days Night Music Festival and our weekly Market Square in the summer,” he said. “For those looking to celebrate our rich history, you can visit Doc’s Town, the Mennonite Heritage Village and Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame. Finally, visitors here feel safe and have excellent hotels, restaurants and shops to provide them with everything they’ll need.” With the population climbing, new businesses are making this growing city their home, new people are moving in each day and, of course, many new jobs are opening up. Of course, being the mayor of such a booming community, has its ups and downs. “By far, the best part of my job is the

reaction I get from kids who ‘meet the mayor.’ I’ve had many priceless moments that I wouldn’t trade for anything,” he said. “Seriously though, like anything that is rewarding, it can be a challenge, because we’re looking to the future and asking for change and, as we all know, change is never easy! We try very hard to be open and transparent and make communication a priority. Like all cities in our province, residents are demanding more in services and, for the first time in decades, not only is our province and city growing, but we are having to invest heavily in infrastructure renewal and keep up with development.” Even with the demands and rough patches, Schafer never regrets becoming the mayor. He has taken each challenge in stride, and the results are a changing community coming together to make a brighter future. While moving forward, the city also strives to keep the history alive and not take anything away from the past. “We are so fortunate to live here with the

quality of life and the quality of people that we embrace the future, strive for excellence and keep getting better,” he concluded. “When I say I don’t think there’s ever been a better time to be living in Swift Current, I hope that is something all future mayors keep saying, because I want to live in a community that keeps getting better and doesn’t stay the same.”
CONVENTIONS AND TRADE SHOWS GROWING IN SWIFT CURRENT Leader-Post Sources
Swift Current offers a full service convention centre, multiple facility rentals and supporting business services. Conventions and trade shows continue to grow and contribute to a 30 million dollar tourism industry in Swift Current. “We have been seeing increases year over year and we expect that will only continue,” notes Lee Friesen from Tourism Swift Current. “Business travel and peak summer traffic will always drive the numbers, but with the convention and trade show facilities we now have in Swift Current, we are attracting new business to our community.” The Sky Centre is a major part of this growth and has contributed to a developing tourism industry. The venue includes 575 theatre style seats which are removable to allow for conventions and trade shows. The house is raked, resulting in excellent sightlines for audiences, while stateof-the-art sound and lighting systems ensure optimal performance experiences. The facility is part of the Living Sky Casino complex and was built at a total cost of $35 million. Since opening in 2008, the Sky Centre has become a showcase for Swift Current and allows organizations and businesses to hold meetings and conventions in a facility that is competitive to any major market. “The Sky Centre offers all the amenities, and its size lets it provide personalized service,” says Catering and Events Coordinator Justina Sather. “Customer service is our priority and we offer all the amenities organizers might need.” Additional venues can be rented for events, conventions and trade shows including the historic Lyric Theatre with a capacity of 190; the Credit Union i-plex accommodates 800 people, and Kinetic Park with its multiple buildings, has capacity for groups up to 2,500. There is a growing list of local suppliers which include catering, event signage and sound support.

There’s lots of work in Swift Current, just as most of Saskatchewan right now. As of today, there are close to 500 jobs in Swift Current and general area that need to be filled.” — Marty Salberg Director of Business Development
Growth continues in Swift Current
By Jessica Mees L-P Specialty Products t is no surprise that Swift Current is one of the fastest growing cities in Saskatchewan. With unique shopping, top-of-the-line health care and brand new schools, there is something for everyone. Located coveniently on the Trans-Canada highway, this smaller city is equipped with lots of green space and affordable living conditions. “We know our population has grown significantly over the past six years, which has resulted in many new homes being constructed,” said Marty Salberg, director of Business Development. “In that time period, we had in excess of 600 residential units built and 500 new immigrants join our community and that trend is something that is sure to continue.” The city has seen a lot of activity over the last
I
few years. In terms of construction, over the past six years, the value of building permits issued is more than the total of the previous 25 years combined. The year 2011 boasted the second highest value in the city’s history, while 2012 was the highest at $83 million. Unlike many Saskatchewan communities, this exciting activity isn’t solely because of the oil industry. “There’s lots of work in Swift Current, just as most of Saskatchewan right now. As of today, there are close to 500 jobs in Swift Current and general area that need to be filled. There are a lot of opportunities for people looking to gain employment,” said Salberg. “It’s pretty diverse in terms of demand, whether it be the service industry, our construction industry, the energy sector, the agriculture sector, the manufacturing sector or the tourism end of things, there’s work
in all general areas. Swift Current isn’t reliant on any one industry, and we’re very fortunate in that regard.” Of course, a city needs more than jobs to survive. Families moving for work will be happy to know of Swift Current’s extremely low crime rate, making it a fun and safe place for kids. “One of our pillars is education and, as we speak, the construction of two new elementary schools is taking place and they’re going to be open for the September 2014 school year. We have French immersion, and both separate and public schools,” he explained. The city is also the proud home of Great Plains College, which has seen a lot of expansion and growth over the past few years. Both University courses as well as trade courses, with a focus on the energy sector, are available. For those looking to retire among the tight-knit
community, there are many options for seniors as well. “I believe we have more green space for a city our size than any in Saskatchewan. We pride ourselves on this and any visitors or newcomers will be very surprised by the parks and the playgrounds and general green space, including two 18-hole golf courses. We have a really great pathway system throughout our parks for bikers and walkers to enjoy. It’s simply a really beautiful city with great people and businesses,” he said. “We are also proud of our great health care system, and recreational facilities, which are second to none. Swift Current really has it all.”

Enjoy the heart of the city this summer By Jessica Mees L-P Specialty Products he downtown area is the heart and soul of Swift Current and has been this way for quite some time. The reason for this is simple: the core of the city is always changing and making improvements. Over the course of a short period of time, the downtown core has transformed into quite the hot spot. With new businesses opening up each year and many existing businesses relocating, shopping and fun have never been easier to find in a common location. “There’s been quite the resurgence in our downtown core in the last three years. Not only will visitors be somewhat surprised, but people who do live in Swift Current who haven’t spent an awful lot of time downtown are also rediscovering a lot of new and exciting things,” said Garry Koebel, president of the Downtown Business Association. “Not only has business opened up but there have been a lot cosmetic improvements as well. Even just walking in the evenings with the twinkle lights in the trees makes for a really nice, open and inviting atmosphere.” Swift Current offers an enjoyable experience for all ages through the city’s Market Square. Going into its third year, this partnership between the City, Swift Current Tourism, the Downtown Business Association and merchants offers something for everyone and is getting bigger each year. “Market Square is located right in the heart of downtown. It consists of an outdoor market, all under a giant circus-like tent every Saturday. I think we are up to close to 50 different vendors ranging from produce to jewelry to handicrafts, you name it. There are quite a variety of vendors offering their wares,” he said. “There are also good quality entertainers and food vendors. It has the advantage of offering many things for the kids to do, in the form of wagon rides, kiddie rides and petting zoo. There is going to be a constant array of different amenities and venues that are going to be down there throughout the summer. There’s going to be something different just about every week.” Those who have never visited downtown before, or who are still curious about its history can take one of walking tours. This tour showcases the last century of buildings in Swift Current, beginning with a tour of Central Avenue.
T
“
The Lyric Theatre, just one of the many stops on the tour, was built in 1912 as a vaudeville theatre. It was later converted to a movie theatre and then a night club during the 1980s. Upon the closure of the last night club in 2003, the theatre sat empty for two years. In 2005, a group of Swift Current residents saw the worth of the historic building, and decided to save it. The location is now a place for people to gather and share music, drama, art and social interaction. “The Lyric Theatre is one of the oldest theatres in Saskatchewan and is currently undergoing a very extensive renovation. A variety of different venues are hosted there — one would be what’s called the Chautauqua Festival, another would be the Improv Nights and Blenders, which bring in a wide variety of high quality entertainment. It’s just a great venue; we always seem to receive a lot of praise from performers.” Another attraction on the tour is the Imperial Hotel, or Big I, which was built in 1903 and is the longest-running business in the city. After all this adventure and discovery, many find themselves looking to grab a bite to eat. Luckily, downtown is home to great locally owned cuisine ranging from ethnic foods to Canadian, a few even having outdoor patios. Whether enjoying an evening of performances, learning about the city’s history, or grabbing a meal with friends, the downtown area is ready to cater to your every need.

celebrates 75 years
By Jessica Mees L-P Specialty Products s festival season begins, Swift Current is finalizing preparations for the 75th annual Frontier Days celebration. This event was created not only for locals, but also for tourists from around the world. The highlight event of each summer in Swift Current, Frontier Days is slated to run June 27 to June 30. Frontier Days spokesperson Tracey Stevenson said that there will be many extra events planned for the special anniversary. “We’re celebrating our past, and we’re celebrating our future. We have top-notch entertainment, some history displays set up, and we’d like to see lots of people coming out. There will be CCA rodeo, a zoo with animal acrobatics and livestock, as well as light horse shows, plus a variety of other things,” Stevenson said. A pancake breakfast will kick Frontier Days off with full stomachs. This year’s opening day breakfast is sponsored by W.W. Smith Insurance, who is celebrating their centennial. “We’re also celebrating the 100th anniversary of 4-H. We’ll be doing a salute to 28 entries of 4-H families that have three to four generations on Sunday. It will be a special celebration where certificates are offered and the generations are celebrated, as well as the 100th year of 4-H, and it’s being held right before our 4-H steer sale.” The entertainment this year is full of big- name treats. Opening up the Grandstand events will be Florida Georgia Line on Friday night. If they purchase tickets ahead of time, music lovers can save $15.00 off gate admission. The Saturday night concert will include country music star Paul Brandt alongside one of Canada’s greatest country bands, High Valley. Robertson Implements will be the presenting sponsor for the High Valley/Paul Brandt show, with 100 per cent of the proceeds from the show going to charity. The money will be dispersed among Joe’s Place in Moose Jaw, Rock Solid Refuge in Shaunavon and the youth centre in Swift Current, as well as Swift Current Ag & Ex Livestock Barns Upgrades. Swift Current
offers unique shopping opportunities By Jessica Mees L-P Specialty Products t may surprise you to find out that Swift Current has a wide variety of shopping available. With a mix of well-known international chains and unique locally owned businesses, nothing compares to this small-city shopping experience. As the premier shopping centre for southwest Saskatchewan, the Swift Current Mall offers everything from shops and services, to one-ofa-kind specialty boutiques, to national chain and department stores. Tim Bugera, property manager of the Swift Current Mall, was proud to discuss what the city as a whole and the mall have to offer. “Tourism is big for us; people should visit the mall because of the shopping experience with all the various stores, but we also have ample parking. If someone has a motor home or trailer, they’ve got plenty of space to park,” he said. “People passing through Swift Current will be pleasantly surprised how good the shopping is.” The Swift Current Mall itself is home to 26 stores, with many businesses surrounding the premises. “What makes it unique is that we have unique stores and merchants. The experience of shopping at Swift Current Mall is you get everything under one roof,” Burgera said. “We have a Saskatchewan Liquor store on the property; we’ve got a WalMart on the property, as well as a Boston Pizza and Burger King.” With the addition of the Farmer’s Market, local flavour is easy to find. Situated in the common area at the east end of the mall, tables are set up every Thursday and Saturday with a variety of food and hand-crafted items.
T
“The Farmer’s Market is important because it is part of the community, and the mall of course promotes community,” said Burgera. “We promote working together, and the Farmer’s Market also allows a person to come in and get fresh fruit and vegetables; that is quite the draw.” Of course the mall isn’t the only shopping hot spot in town. In his role as president of the Downtown Business Association, Garry Koebel has witnessed the growth and expansion of the downtown core and has many suggestions for eager shoppers. “Market Square is located right in the heart of downtown. It consists of an outdoor market, all under a giant circus-like tent, every Saturday,” said Koebel. “I think we are up to close to 50 different vendors ranging from produce to jewelry to handicrafts, you name it. There’s quite a variety of vendors offering their wares.” Koebel also offers advice on where to take the kids to shop. As owner and operator of The Sputtergotch Toy Company, he knows firsthand what kids are looking for these days and offers over 3,000 products at any given time. “We have everything ranging from toddler and babies right up to toys for big kids,” he explained. “We also have a nostalgic candy section with quite a variety, like American chocolate bars, vintage candy from the ’30s and some key sweets from growing up in the ’70s and ’80s as well.” Who wouldn’t want to shop in a store featured in Today’s Parent magazine as one of the Best Toy Stores in the Country? Shopping in Swift Current has really started to expand and takes into consideration the needs and wants of modern Saskatchewanians. Visitors will receive wonderful surprises when entering one of the many shops available.

A sports lovers’ paradise By Jessica Mees L-P Specialty Products s the population grows of Swift Current, so does the number of Bronco and Indians fans. For those who aren’t hockey fans, The Swift Current Indians offer a unique baseball experience. Although they have been around for quite some time, the Swift Current Indians became part of the Western Major Baseball League (WMBL) in 2001. The league change was made to reflect its expansion into Alberta. The Indians have since won four WMBL championships. On days when you’d rather participate in sporting events or recreation, many facilities are available for public use. along the Swift Current Creek all the way to the Chinook Golf Course. During the summer months, visitors and locals can take in an afternoon of golf surrounded by beautiful green landscapes. Of course, if you’ve already played this course one too many times, Swift Current is also home to Elmwood Golf and Country Club, which is reported to be one of the best 18-hole layouts in Western Canada. Once you work up a sweat, why not take a dip? The combination of the indoor aquatic centre and outdoor Fairview swimming pool make it possible for swimmers and divers to practice all year long. Through the long, cold winter months, sport enthusiasts may be looking for alternatives to their outdoor routines. The Credit Union iplex is a 3,239-seat, multi-purpose arena. It was built in 1967 as a Canadian Centennial project and originally named the Centennial Civic Centre. In 2007, city council approved a huge $14,000,000 expansion and construction of the hockey/curling complex was completed in the fall. This arena is currently home to the Swift Current Broncos, Home Hardware AAA Midget Legionnaires and Swift Current Rampage lacrosse team. It also hosted the 2010 World Women’s Curling Championship. Visitors can now take up a game of curling on the six sheets of curling ice, rent a pair of skates for public skate or rent the facility for special events. Overall, the sports and recreation world is booming in Swift Current. It would be surprising if any athlete searching for a spot to get physical couldn’t find it in this sports-loving city.

Cypress Health Region leading the province in minimal wait times
By Jessica Mees L-P Specialty Features n keeping up with the rest of Saskatchewan, the Cypress Health Region’s number one priority is reducing wait time for patients in need of surgical procedures. The main goal for the next few years is to the reduce wait times across the board to three months. Fortunately the majority of the facilities in the Cypress Health Region are already almost at that point. “We are currently leading the province in cutting down on wait time,” said Brad Boutilier, Corporate Relations Coordinator. “We have a year to hit that goal, but we are predicting we will hit it within the next little while.” After an increase in funding was announced,
I
staff at the Cypress Regional Hospital were also able to announce another big change. Additional dialysis patients will now be able to receive service. This increase in funding can be expected to double the number of patients that can be accommodated in Swift Current. The hospital currently offers 12 treatments per day, on a three days per week basis. With the new funding, dialysis will be offered on a six day a week schedule thus potentially eliminating the current three patient waiting lists. As one of only eight satellite dialysis locations in Saskatchewan including with Tisdale, Prince Albert, Lloydminster, North Battleford, Moose Jaw, Yorkton and Estevan, this announcement may be one of the most important ones health
wise across the province this year. While the main dialysis centres in Regina and Saskatoon provide three-quarters of dialysis treatments in Saskatchewan, the satellite locations allow patients this service closer to home, taking away much of the unneeded added stress. The third point that Boutilier wants to point out is the LEAN initiative. For those who have never heard of this idea before, LEAN is a clientfocused approach to evaluating service delivery in a workplace to improve processes and procedures. According to a year-long research program by the Ministry of Health, LEAN is one of the best methods of eliminating workplace waste, variation and work imbalance. “There’s a huge commitment there, with getting
our staff and our leadership trained in that area,” he said. “To be able to makes strides to save the health system some dollars and to work a little bit smarter. Not having to tie up people’s time with wasteful activities is what LEAN is all about.” As for the future of health care in Swift Current and the remainder of the Cypress Health region, Boutilier says patients can expect continuous upgrades and additions of new health care professionals to the area. “I think that we’re going to have an exciting event obviously when the Maple Creek facility opens up,” he concluded. “That is a project that we have been working on for close to two years now. We are all really excited about this; it will be opening in early 2014.”
Education takes priority
H
istory was made on Oct. 18 as construction began on Swift Current’s brand-new joint school. Although the two individual schools are run by separate school boards, they will share practical and applied arts space, band rooms and a childcare facility. The Holy Trinity Catholic School Division and Chinook have been working on this project for a number of years. As some older schools became safety hazards, it became important to find a solution. After many years of talking and negotiations, the 21st century learning facility had a final plan. The new facility, which is the first new school in Swift Current in 40 years, will hold 1,000 Pre-K to Grade 8 students, 500 from each school. As for developments in continued education,
Great Plains College is offering a variety of new trades and university-style programs. An Office Administration program will be introduced at the Warman Campus in September, and Third Class Power Engineering will be offered at Kindersley for the first time in Spring 2014, to coincide with the completion of the campus’s existing Fourth Class Power Engineering program. The college is also exploring partnership options to run at least two Heavy Equipment Operator cohorts in 2014. Locations for these programs have yet to be determined. Although many of the new programs will be offered at other campuses, Swift Current still remains full of a diverse selection. From practical nursing, to welding, to business, there is something offered for everyone. REG26203322_1_1

The Cypress Health Region continues to build on its vision of being a leader in rural health excellence by offering coveted education and training opportunities within the southwest corner of Saskatchewan.
Dignitaries stand next to ‘HAL’, one of three lifelike mannequins, at the grand opening of the new Simulation Lab at the Cypress Regional Hospital
Serving a population area of 44,000 residents, many of which are in energetic towns and villages that offer a relaxed lifestyle, the Region has recognized that providing high levels of education and training is one of the best ways to recruit and retain skilled healthcare professionals. Take, for example, the Saskatchewan Collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program (SCBScN). In late 2012 the Cypress Health Region and local Great Plains College (GPC) announced an innovative partnership with the University of Regina and Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology (SIAST) that would see the Swift Current GPC campus offering the four-year degree program locally. The partnership puts Swift Current in the
position of being one of just three cities in Saskatchewan offering the SCBScN program, and the only one with a population below 200,000. The SCBScN program is a collaborative approach to meeting the growing desire for education to be offered in smaller, non-University settings. Coupled by the Cypress Regional Hospital’s new Lee/ Irwin Simulation Centre and Cenovus Energy Inc. Control Room, the Health Region offers a desirable combination of education and training that is on par with larger, more populated centres in Canada. The new simlab opened in Spring 2013 and offers mannequin-based training to create life-like situations where students can determine how to care for a patient’s needs without risk. The $135,000 simlab is a true demonstration of the Region’s emphasis on investing in the education and training needs of its staff. Safety is the Cypress Health Region’s highest value. The Cypress Health Region has exciting career opportunities for trained healthcare professionals and for individuals looking to get their foot in the door of this exciting and rewarding industry. If you are interested in learning about current career opportunities available in the Cypress Health Region please visit us at www.cypresshealth.ca or contact us any time at 1-306-778-5256. Swift Current is located in the heart of the southwest Saskatchewan and is surrounded by five destination areas: Big Muddy, Cypress Hills, Grasslands, Great Sandhills and Lake Diefenbaker. Lake Diefenbaker Constructed in 1967 and located 30 minutes north of Swift Current, Lake Diefenbaker took eight years to build and, when it was done, was the world’s largest earth-filled dam. It features expansive waterways and 800 kilometres of shoreline. Saskatchewan’s “great lake” is wellknown for its excellent golfing, boating and fishing. The surrounding area is also home to three major parks – Sask Landing, Danielson Provincial Park and Douglas Provincial Park.
Cypress Hills Located 90 minutes west of Swift Current, the Cypress Hills are the highest point of land in Canada between the Rocky Mountains and Labrador. The park is home to rare wild flowers, towering stands of lodgepole pine and 200 species of birds and mammals. A giant plateau once surrounded by glaciers, Cypress Hills attracts 250,000 people each year.
Grasslands Drive 90 minutes south of Swift Current and you’ll find Grasslands National Park. As the name suggests, this is a natural paradise with weathered badlands, untouched native prairie, and grassland flora and fauna. Home to plains bison, Grasslands is the only one of the country’s 39 national parks that represents Prairie Grasslands. Not only is it the only place in Canada where colonies of blacktailed prairie dogs still exist, it’s also the new home of the black footed ferret, once thought to be extinct.
Great Sandhills one of the largest and most impressive sets of active sand dunes in Canada, the Great Sandhills draws visitors from across the country and is a veritable paradise for photographers, hikers and bird watchers. The hills rise 50 feet above the ground and cover 1,900 square kilometres. Native prairie grass helps to bind the sand together. Subjected to strong winds, the dunes are always moving, creating an ever-changing landscape for photographers, visitors and natural wildlife.
Big Muddy Located two hours southeast of Swift Current, the Big Muddy Badlands are an incredible display of nature’s architecture. In the heart of the badlands is Castle Butte, a relic from the ice age. This free-standing structure – with a circumference of 0.5 km and an elevation of 60 meters – was used as a landmark by First Nations people, the NWMP and early Canadian settlers. Evidence of early civilization can be found in the Big Muddy area in the form of stone effigies, ceremonial circles and ancient buffalo jumps.
