Swift Current — Where life makes sense For L-P Specialty Products For 100 years, Swift Current has been a cornerstone community in southwest Saskatchewan. In recent years, the city has become a growing centre for agriculture, oil, gas, manufacturing, retail and tourism. With the recent growth, Swift Current is known as a destination of choice for many to live, work and play. According to Mayor Jerrod Schafer, Swift Current is a community that strives to be the best it can be. He feels that Swift Current is a great place to raise a family because it is safe, affordable, clean and fun. “We offer amenities and services that one would normally expect in a city much larger than ours, and we still believe we can be better,” said Schafer. “We’ve found a perfect balance between affordability and the amenities and services that we provide.” The recent growth in Saskatchewan has had a positive population, economic and business impact in Swift Current. The city now has more residents, more businesses, more amenities and a stronger economy than they have ever experienced. Schafer and his city council are embracing the growth. “In the last nine years, the total value of our building permits was almost double the total value of the 26 previous years, and 2014 is shaping up to be our third best year ever,” he said. “Council has targeted a population of 25,000 residents by the year 2025.” While Schafer and city council are committed to growth in the region, they also recognize that a balance must be struck between their growth goals and the responsibilities to Swift Current residents. “Growth must be well-managed and carefully planned,” said Schafer. “We must have the infrastructure in place to support growth, and, most of all, we must maintain the affordability our residents enjoy, which makes Swift Current such a great place to call home.”

New business is also capitalizing on the growth in the region. Schafer believes business owners are recognizing the potential Swift Current has to offer. “Whether a young entrepreneur or a long-time business owner, when you’re considering relocation, first and foremost you want to be somewhere that is growing, a city that is looking to the future,” he explained. “As a council, we consider our businesses as partners in our growth; their success is ours, and vice-versa.” Schafer understands people will invest where they can achieve a strong return, and he feels local businesses are doing exceptionally well. “We offer some of the lowest property taxes in the province, as well as incentives for both new investment and existing business expansion,” said Schafer. “We believe Swift Current is positioned well as a great partner for entrepreneurs and businesses to invest.” Tourism is also a key to any community growth, and Swift Current offers a variety of interests for both visitors to the city and residents. In addition to many attractions, the city has a thriving arts and culture scene. You will find there is almost always something happening in Swift Current, from live performances at the historic Lyric Theatre to music at the Blenders Concert Series or exhibitions at the art gallery. Sports fans can enjoy the WHL’s Swift Current Broncos, take in a WMBL baseball game with the Swift Current Indians or take a tour of the Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame. “Nature lovers can enjoy our many parks and outdoor facilities and can easily travel around the city on foot through our expansive Chinook Pathway system,” said Schafer. “We also play host to major festivals such as the Windscape Kite Festival, Frontier Days and the Long Days’ Night Music Festival.” While growth has happened under his leadership, Schafer is quick to share the credit and success that Swift Current is enjoying. “Growth isn’t about one person,” he said. “The core of our belief in our growth strategy lies in the ‘we’ ideal; we can do this together.”

Swift Current is a community that strives to be the best it can be.”

— Jerrod Schafer

Mayor of Swift Current

Schafer is incredibly proud of the unity within the city council and equally proud to be a part of a team with what he believes is a great vision. “We work exceptionally well together and we all share a common goal because we can all see a bright future for this community that means so much to each of us,” said Schafer. With all that’s happening in Swift Current, you can see why it is a city “where life makes sense.”

Current call that place “home.” Swift Current’s economy has been extremely strong for the past number of years. Marty Salberg, director of Business Development for the City of Swift Current, said the city is running on “all eight cylinders right now.” All industry sectors are growing, including agriculture, oil and gas, service and retail, tourism, and

construction, which has resulted in great opportunities for new businesses and new families. “There’s a wide range [of work], so if people are looking for employment, they are sure to find it in Swift Current,” said Salberg. When you combine employment opportunities with the quality of life Swift Current has to offer, it’s not surprising the city is a great place to live. “There are many reasons why people would choose not only to invest and do business in Swift Current, but to locate as an employee and take advantage of what we have to offer,” said Salberg. “Young families can afford to own homes in our city; there are parks and playgrounds everywhere for kids to play. We already have a new hospital, and two brandnew schools will be opening in the fall. Residential construction is booming, and our real estate market is flourishing. Our population is growing because people are realizing that Swift Current is the perfect place to live, work, invest and play.” 2013 was a strong year for Swift Current, and 2014 is showing promise. Salberg said the city is on track to have one of its best years in its history. With so many reasons to move to Swift Current, the city is working diligently to accommodate the infrastructure needs of new businesses and residents. Salberg says 100 residential lots are being developed, with more on the way. In terms of commercial property, Salberg is seeing

increased demand every year, which can only mean more great things for Swift Current’s economy. There is no shortage of people to purchase available lots and fill job vacancies. Salberg said that in the last five years, Swift Current has seen 1,000 newcomers make the city their home through immigration. Because of this influx, 700 residential lots have been built in the last seven years, keeping construction at an all-time high. “We have an active Newcomer Welcome Center involved in helping newcomers participate and enjoy the community in as quick a fashion as possible,” said Salberg. Swift Current offers the full package. As Salberg said, we only live life once. People who move to Swift Current will be able to make a living, enjoy great amenities, explore education opportunities, and live in a location that’s close to international airports and larger centres. “Folks that do move here and see what Swift Current is all about generally never leave.” In regards to education, Swift Current’s college keeps on growing. More is being offered to the students, whether through academics or athletic programs. “We know the importance of a post-secondary education. The more that can be offered in Swift Current, the better,” Salberg said. “Swift Current really is a wonderful place. With real good, quality people, a positive business climate and a low crime rate, it’s a fantastic place to be.”

SWIFT CURRENT CENTENNIAL For L-P Specialty Products

end celebrations.

Community involvement has always been important to the Living Sky Casino. This year the casino will be taking an active role in Swift Current’s centennial celebrations.

“The tent will be transformed into the SIGA Centennial Pavilion,” Gerbrandt said. “On the Sunday night of the homecoming weekend — which is June 29 — we’re going to host a wrap-up concert … we are presenting classic-rock band Prism in the tent as a cabaret.” The cost of the show will be $5 at the door, which will only be open to those 19 and older.

To kick things off, the casino will be hosting its annual pow wow at Kinetic Exhibition Park June 14 and 15. “It’s going to be our first outdoor pow wow,” said Lindsay Gerbrandt, Marketing and Guest Services manager. “There’s camping spaces available for those who want to attend and participate. There’s no admission, so we invite everyone to come and experience our pow wow.” Gerbrandt explained that the pow wow has been held in February in the past, but Living Sky Casino decided to hold it in June in order to support Swift Current’s centennial. The pow wow is going to be held under the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA) event tent, which comes in at 17,500 square feet. Following the event, the tent will remain up so that it can be used as part of the Centennial Homecoming Week-

In addition to the entertainment in the SIGA tent, the Living Sky Casino will also be hosting centennial-related promotions and events. The biggest of these promotions is “100 Days of Winning.” Each night up to and including June 30, Players Club members who visit the casino between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. have the chance to win a hotseat draw. Winners of the hotseat draws have the opportunity to win prizes that value between $100 and $1000. Casino visitors can also enter to win an Aerolite Travel Trailer, which will be given away July 1. Sports bring Saskatchewan’s southwest communities together By Mike Shiplack For L-P Specialty Products hat makes sports in Swift Current so important? It’s not all about the highcalibre players brought in from the Western Hockey League (WHL) or the Western Major Baseball League (WMBL). What makes these leagues so important is how they help build community — and it’s not only Swift Current that benefits. The entire southwest region of the province is proud to wear the Broncos’ hockey jersey and curve the visor of an Indians baseball cap. How does southwest Saskatchewan rally around their favourite sports teams? With family, friends and neighbours. The Swift Current Indians are proud to have the largest amount of local players per capita out of any team in the WMBL. The players even volunteer their time to maintain the candid 500-capacity Mitchell Field. “WMBL is Canada’s premier college summer league, and that’s attractive for those coaches and university players who need more time on the field during summer before going back to college,” said Bruce Deg, president of the Swift Current Indians Baseball Club. “We’ve also been really fortunate with the coaching staff. Head coach Joe Carnahan always brings quality ballplayers to the park.” Some players to watch for this summer are infielder Justin Lee (Texas A&M Kingsville) and catcher Taylor Steen (Indiana State University). And you should always keep an eye out for local talent from Swift Current and area. The first game at Mitchell Field is May 31, and the season lasts until the end of August. For Indian fans that can’t make all 23 home games, there are packs of 23 vouchers available for only $180 ($7 a game). Vouchers aren’t game specific, and fans can use as many as they like to treat friends, family and even neighbours. For tickets, visit www.scindians.ca. Since returning to Swift Current in 1986, the Broncos have brought in countless fans from across Saskatchewan’s southwest to watch all the action in the Credit Union iPlex. During the season, the team practices in rinks at surrounding towns to help strengthen the community. “The team has always done a lot of community work, but we’re trying to showcase that more in the upcoming seasons,” said Dianne Sletten, assistant general manager, business operation. “It’s hard for people in rural communities to commit to season passes. MARKET SQUARE - THE HEARTBEAT OF SUMMER IN SWIFT CURRENT Swift Current this year is a year of celebrations. This is the year that Swift Current has turned one hundred years old yet it is shining more brightly today than ever before. Swift Current has grown into a community of active participants, and with leaders that lead with conviction and confidence. It has been this passion that led to the opening of Swift Current’s Market Square. Market Square, under the continued nurture and direction of the City’s CAO, Susan Motkaluk and with the valued contributions of the Swift Current City Council, the Swift Current and District Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Business Association, the Farmer’s Association and Title Sponsor Standard Motors, has developed into that of a destination and tourist stop. Summer Saturdays in Swift Current now mean it is time to visit the popular Market Square. Market Square has undergone much growth and many improvements to arrive at its current form but it has always had a way of making everyone feel right at home. Market Square is a cornucopia of sights and sounds, of old fashioned hospitality, earthy charm, and amazing riches. One cannot help but experience a sense of nostalgia and warm feelings while strolling through Market Square as smells of fresh baking, sizzling hot-dogs, and fresh picked vegetables waft to your nose. Encountering local merchandise, learning their origin, experiencing their taste, smell or touch, develops an appreciation for them. It makes what you experience from Market Square feel like a communal project. Market Square has become the heartbeat of the summer months here in Swift Current, providing a steady thrum that is bringing individuals to Swift Current. People from both near and far are coming to explore and to experience not only our downtown, but all facets of the City of Swift Current. Market Square is the promise of something new and is serving as a necessary function to assist in meeting the City’s goal of Twenty-five by 25. It is a diverse and vibrant space that is now part of the City’s supporting network that is facilitating and building healthy relationships between communities. Market Square is a means to strategize and collaborate with community partners to build a thriving local economy with a healthy social place where people will want celebrate Swift Current.

Swift Current offers a full service convention centre, multiple facility rentals and supporting business services. The facilities have been a boon to the local economy, generating spin-offs to restaurants, hotels and retail trade. “Along with a choice of rental facilities, we also have 17 hotel properties and almost 1,000 rooms available,” says Jackie Moore from Tourism Swift Current. “Seven properties also have meeting rooms that can be booked for groups from 15 to 260 people.” Conventions and trade shows contribute to a $30 million tourism industry in Swift Current. “We have seen steady increases year over year, and if we deliver on expectations, that number will only grow,” notes Lee Friesen from Tourism Swift Current. “Business travel and peak summer traffic has been the driver behind those numbers, but with the facilities and properties we have in Swift Current, we’re in a good position to build on the base that has been established.” The Sky Centre is a major part of this growth and has contributed to a developing tourism industry. The venue includes 575 theatre style seats which are removable for conventions and trade shows. The house is raked, resulting in excellent sightlines for audiences, while state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems ensure optimal performance experiences. The facility is part of the Living Sky Casino complex and was built five years ago at a total cost of $35 million. Since opening, the Sky Centre has become a showcase for Swift Current, allowing for local, regional and provincial organizations to hold meetings and conventions in a facility that is competitive to any market in the province. “The Sky Centre offers all of the amenities you’d expect, and its size lets us provide personalized service,” says Catering and Events Coordinator Ashley Peterson. “Customer service is our priority and we are able to provide the supporting staff that organizers require to host an event.” Swift Current has additional facilities that can be rented. Unique venues include the historic Lyric Theatre, with a capacity of 190, and the Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame, located in the Credit Union i-plex. This multi-purpose facility offers a variety of rooms and can accommodate 800 people. Kinetic Park, with multiple buildings and ample grounds, has the capacity to host groups up to 2,500. Supporting all these facilities is a growing list of local event suppliers that include catering, event signage, sound support and media marketing support. Jackie adds, “If you’re looking to host an event, hold an annual meeting, or plan a convention, you should see us in Swift Current. We are a destination value. We’re available to assist and welcome your inquiries.” Visitor & Convention Services are open Monday to Friday and available by calling 306-778-9174.

Living Sky Casino Powwow builds community

By Judy Bird For L-P Specialty Products hough it has been held for only a few years, the Living Sky Casino Powwow is an event that the community of Swift Current has eagerly embraced. The casino, which is owned and operated by the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA), has held the event as a way to give back to the community and to help build positive cultural relations. “All the SIGA locations have a powwow. SIGA looks at sharing success, and giving back to people in our communities. This is one event that can do that,” said Trevor Marion, general manager of Living Sky Casino in Swift Current. The powwow is usually held in February, but this year organizers decided to have it coincide with Swift Current’s centennial celebrations. It is being held outdoors for the first time, and will take place June 14 and 15 in Kinetic Park. Living Sky Casino will be using the SIGA event tent so that the powwow can go on, rain or shine. The 2014 powwow is sponsored by Living Sky Casino and Nekaneet First Nation. Since the first powwow was held, Marion said, it has been an effective means for breaking down barriers in the community. “When we first held it, there was fear because nobody knew what it was, or what to expect. Now they’re well versed. We certainly have more people and more ambassadors in the community. It’s an annual event that people in the community look forward to,” said Marion. The powwow brings in approximately 2,500 people, leaving a positive economic impact for the city, but so much more for those attending. For friends and relatives, it means visiting and catching up again. For spectators, it is a chance to see a beautiful display of song and dance. For dancers, it means the chance to participate in a cultural activity and perhaps win prize money in the competitions. Unlike other SIGA powwows, Living Sky Casino’s powwow does not have competition for drum groups, but rather the drum groups are selected by the powwow committee and invited to be host drums. “We bring in 10 host drums and have a singing exhibition. We want the cream of the crop when

Swift Current’s joint schools are designed to meet students’ needs By Miranda Burski L-P Specialty Products school is more than just a place where students go to learn. It’s the building where they spend the majority of their days during the school year. As such, it needs to be a place where they feel comfortable and happy. And a truly student-first school needs to have the programming and resources needed to accommodate all of its students. The school boards behind the Swift Current’s new joint elementary schools — the Chinook School Division and the Holy Trinity Catholic School Division — took that idea to heart when they designed the École Centennial School and All Saints Catholic School. The building, which is part of a larger integrated facility, meets its resource needs by including areas that will be shared by students of both schools. “A lot of the spaces we’re looking at are highly specialized spaces that are often fairly expensive programming rooms that would only be used half time by a school,” said Liam Choo-Foo, director of education with the Chinook School Division. “By combining the two schools, hiring the same teacher and scheduling students from both schools into that same space, we maximize our efficiency.” Included in this model are areas such

as the resource centre, band room, arts area and student services. That doesn’t mean that the schools will be completely integrated, however. Being each a public school and a Catholic school means that they will have slightly different curriculums, although both will teach students from prekindergarten to Grade 8. For example, the École Centennial School is a French immersion and English school, while the All Saints Catholic School is English-based with a curriculum permeated by the Catholic faith. In order to be sure that both schools were built in a way that would more fully benefit students, the school boards included students, parents and teachers in the design process. “There was a lot of consultation that has occurred over a number of years,” said Choo-Foo. “Our architects have been very open to listening to our school communities, as well as our broader community, in putting this design together.” “We can use finite resources in a way that shows good stewardship so that what we are creating is not just be for the children, but for all of the community. Because schools really do belong to the community, and so they should be a reflection of the community,” said Celeste York, director of education with the Holy Trinity Catholic School Division. While work on the joint schools began about four years ago, the process of getting to that point began over 10 years ago, when an application for a new public school was submitted. Eventually the Holy Trinity Catholic School Division found that they were in need of a new school, as well, and the idea of combining forces was considered. “Over time, it became apparent that, with the criteria for getting approval, we would stand a better chance if we made a joint application,” said Choo-Foo. “We recognized that both school divisions had a need for new facilities and that, because the boards had had such a good working relationship, we really felt that it was an opportunity for us to take that relationship to another level and to do some more purposeful collaboration,” added York. It was during the time of the joint application process that discussion regarding a larger integrated facility began. At that time, Swift Current’s Kiwanis Club had a mandate to bring together all of the major public service providers in Swift Current to brainstorm what possibilities lay in the city’s future. During that process, they found that the City of Swift Current, the local community college and the health region all had similar facility needs that required addressing. From there, the idea of an integrated facility

— including the joint schools — began to take shape. This integrated facility, which is still in the works, is likely to include the Cypress Regional Hospital, École Centennial School, All Saints Catholic School, a long-term care facility, other health region services and a variety of City services — such as a pool, field house or art gallery. “Once the buildings are all interconnected, it will make it easier for students of the schools and for seniors in the long-term care facility to enter each other’s areas of the facility without having to go outside. This will allow for easier service learning for students,” said York. “Or, if we’re going to be talking about career exploration and mentorships, a student in Grade 7 or 8 who may be exploring the health sciences would actually be able to job shadow a professional for part of the day without having to leave their own school setting.”

By combining the two schools, hiring the same teacher and scheduling students from both schools into that same space, we maximize our efficiency.”

Saddling up for Frontier Days

By Blair Braitenbach For L-P Specialty Products hen it comes to Swift Current’s annual Frontier Days, some things never change — and that’s exactly the way people like it. Celebrating 76 years of western-themed entertainment in Saskatchewan’s southwest corner, Frontier Days is steeped in tradition and history. Taking place from June 26 to June 29, this year’s event — themed “Saddle Up for the Ride of a Century” — is partnered with Swift Current’s Centennial Homecoming 2014 festivities. Celebrating Swift Current’s centennial

By Blair Braitenbach For L-P Specialty Products wift Current’s centennial is a time to reflect on the city’s rich history while looking forward to the future — but for four days, the city’s Centennial Homecoming festivities are going to mean one rompin’, stompin’ good time. Take a stroll through “Speedy Creek’s” downtown core and you’ll discover countless historic landmarks dating back to its earliest beginnings. Century-old buildings such as the Lyric Theatre, Central School, the local railway station, and the York and Imperial hotels, to name a few, represent the southwestern city’s early “boomtown” era. While Swift Current has evolved over the passing decades — and recently as a proponent in Saskatchewan’s economic growth — the community has stayed tied to its roots, preserving much of its historic legacies and significantly retaining its western and farming culture. Centennial Homecoming 2014 — coinciding with the city’s annual Frontier Days — runs from June 26 to June 29. Dave Spencer, Centennial Celebrations Committee co-chair, said this will be an opportunity to socialize with family and friends, reflect on Swift Current’s past, celebrate the present and look forward to the future. “What that involves is recognizing the people who have participated in Swift Current’s legacy,” Spencer said. “Really that goes back to the First Nations who lived in the area, and subsequent to that all the immigrant groups who came, and in its more recent history the individuals and families who came for work to make Swift Current their home. This is a way to celebrate what we consider a great Saskatchewan city.” By partnering with the annual Frontier Days, the celebrations are going to be bigger and better with a significant downtown component, according to Erin Gehl, projects coordinator with the City of Swift Current. She explained that in addition to partnering with the Agriculture and Exhibition Association, the

City and the Centennial Celebrations Committee have brought on board various businesses and organizations to contribute to the four-day event. “Frontier Days is also a historically important component [celebrating its 76th anniversary], so it made sense to partner with them to put on a great show,” Gehl said. “With people travelling to Swift Current, not only to visit the Kinetic Exhibition Park grounds but also our downtown, it feels like a natural partnership. “It’s been a collaborative effort to provide several different things, enabling us to offer the community an experience they’re never going to forget.” The list of centennial events and attractions is almost as long as a winding prairie road. With each day showcasing a variety of activities to partake in, Gehl said organizers are confident each attendee will find something to smile about. Events include: guided downtown walking and building tours, self-guided driving tours, a parade, historic booths and art displays, centennial exhibits, a multicultural pavilion, a centennial pavilion, multiple live music showcases, pancake breakfasts and a barbeque lunch, the CCA Rodeo, and a fireworks display. Throw in the annual Frontier Days’ midway with its variety of rides, food vendors and other attractions, and you’ve got a recipe for true family entertainment, said Gehl. While organizers welcome everyone of all walks of life to make Swift Current a destination throughout the four-day festivities, the event isn’t titled a “Homecoming” for nothing. “We’re inviting people to come back during the summer to take in all of the activities and rediscover Swift Current if they’ve moved away for a while to see how the city has grown,” Gehl said. “I love how beautiful Swift Current is — aesthetically-wise and people-wise. We have the best of everything here. We’re still a smaller centre and it doesn’t take long to get around, but we have amenities like no other with a strong cultural and recreational community.” For a more detailed listing of Swift Current’s Centennial Homecoming events, visit www.swiftcurrent100.ca.

Plenty to see and do in Swift Current’s downtown

By Michele Tyndall For L-P Specialty Products wift Current is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The city’s slogan is “Where life makes sense,” and nowhere is that more apparent than in its downtown core. “We’re very fortunate to have a vibrant downtown in Swift Current. We have a unique blend of shops, restaurants and services that cater to virtually every need. Swift Current is also known for its courteous, hospitable service, making every experience feel like a visit with old friends,” said Susan Motkaluk, chief administrative officer for the city. Swift Current’s downtown was built around the Canadian Pacific Railway operations, and it flourished from the very beginning. Today, downtown Swift Current includes a diverse mix of retail stores, restaurants, theatres, and an impressive array of service-orientated businesses like accountants, doctors and lawyers. “On top of that, our Market Square is thriving. Saturdays from June to September are literally packed with laughter and atmosphere downtown. events in conjunction with the Centennial Homecoming Celebration from June 26 to 29. The Downtown Walking Tour, guided tours organized by the Swift Current Museum during the celebration, will give walkers a nostalgic look at some of Swift Current’s most historic landmarks, including the Eagle Theatre and the Professional Building. The free tours provide a unique look at how Swift Current has grown throughout its 100-year history. “Eliminators Car Club is putting the Show and Shine on this year during our Centennial Homecoming in the zero-block downtown, adding another exciting event to an already jam-packed itinerary that weekend. Cars from a variety of decades will be on display by this great car club, mixed in with family fun, live music and entertainment. We’ve had tremendous success with the Show and Shine at Market Square in the past, so we thought it would be a perfect addition to this year’s Centennial lineup,” said Motkaluk. Combining great events with natural beauty, a sense of history and contemporary amenities makes Swift Current’s downtown experience exciting for residents and visitors alike. “What stands out about our downtown is its beauty. We’ve put a lot of energy into downtown revitalization in the past few years to add to its appeal,” said Motkaluk. The last 100 years has seen continued growth and improvement in the downtown core, and the commitment of businesses and downtown organizations, along with the support of residents and visitors alike, makes it clear that the next 100 years for Swift Current’s downtown will be a century of success and evolution.

Shoppers welcome in Swift Current

By Andrew Livingstone For L-P Specialty Products or essential items and exceptional finds, shoppers need only stop into Swift Current, where world-class outlets mingle with local businesses for a shopping opportunity unlike any other. On any day of the week, downtown Swift Current is an excellent place to browse for the most stylish clothes and accessories, toys and games, vehicles and automotive parts, and even the tastiest flavours. “There’s quite a unique blend of shops, restaurants and coffee houses,” said Susan Motkaluk, chief administrative officer for the City of Swift Current. “It’s quite a wonderful atmosphere.” The merchandise ranges from the very old to the very new. “We just got an antique shop called Fresh Vintage Decor, and it’s fantastic,” Motkaluk said. “For kids and all of the young-at-heart, there’s just a fabulous toy store downtown, and it’s called Sputtergotch. It’s a new shop in that it’s only three years old, but they have thousands of products there, and the shopping experience is fantastic for anyone who’s got kids because they really promote the idea of playing with and experiencing the toys, so it’s one of those shops where you can touch and feel it and see if you like it.” Visitors can stride out of the city in the finest footwear, regardless of their tastes. “Swift Shoe Repair has fantastic shoes — when you drive by, you think it’s just a repair shop, but they also sell shoes and they’ve got a fantastic variety,” said Motkaluk. “We also have a Cowtown downtown, and they sell cowboy boots, shirts and paraphernalia.” Walking, of course, can only take shoppers so far, but the city has a selection of car dealerships to provide the right vehicle for the right price. “Downtown, we have Standard Motors and Knight Dodge, and, on our service road, there’s

The Farmer’s Market folks bring in local, farm-fresh products — honey, vegetables — and they also bring in a lot of arts and crafts. They provide some wonderful products that you can’t regularly get.”

Shoppers welcome in Swift Current

Continued from Page E10 a number of auto dealers, like Honda, Nissan and Cypress Motors,” Motkaluk said. “I know that the auto dealers in Swift Current have been very creative with their marketing, and also creative with their pricing, so I think it’s worth a trip to explore and test drive.” As enjoyable as shopping in downtown Swift Current can be throughout the week, the Market Square experience comes alive every Saturday from June to September. “We do music every Saturday — local entertainment and even entertainment that’s travelling through on the TransCanada Highway,” said Motkaluk. “Also, we’ve got kids’ activities, pony rides, bouncy castles, face painting — it’s got a bit of a carnival theme.” Meanwhile, the Farmer’s Market provides a selection of artisanal foods and decorations for the discerning buyer. “The Farmer’s Market folks bring in local, farm-fresh products — honey, vegetables — and they also bring in a lot of arts and crafts,” Motkaluk said. “They provide some wonderful products that you can’t regularly get.” Three themed Saturdays — “agriculture” in June, “planes, trains and spaceships” (and a popular costume contest) in July or August, and an expansive automotive “show and shine” in September — provide extra incentive for shoppers of all ages to plan to converge on Swift Current’s Market Square on the weekend. Although Swift Current’s downtown is thriving, shoppers can find much to enjoy

throughout the city, and several stores have recently renovated or expanded. “Canadian Tire just recently did a big renovation, and I think this Canadian Tire shop is just fantastic for its variety of products,” said Motkaluk. She added that the variety is only enhanced by the new, attached Mark’s Work Wearhouse. “Our local department store, the Pioneer Co-Op, also just recently completed renovations, and they’ve got a wonderful variety of family clothing — women’s, men’s, children’s clothes

and shoes. That’s really a nice shopping experience because they’ve got a lot of the name brands that you can’t always get.” And, as always, the two shopping centres, Wheatland Mall and Swift Current Mall, provide a full complement of standard shopping opportunities alongside local flavours. Whether buying for a beloved person, to celebrate a special occasion or simply to meet one’s everyday needs, Swift Current is the place to shop.

TREATING EMPLOYEES like family leads to SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS For L-P Specialty Products

The Home Inn and Suites in Swift Current has always created a welcome and supportive environment for its guests. So it shouldn’t come as any surprise that the hotel’s staff are treated in much the same way. “We value our employees,” said Tracy Melle, general manager of the Home Inn and Suites — Swift Current. “Our employees are part of the team and part of the D3H family.” Melle explained that D3H, which owns the Home Inn and Suites in Swift Current, makes it a point to include their staff in the running of their hotels as much as possible. This involves everything from seeking input from employees of every level, to giving employees the first opportunity to accept new positions as they become available. In this way, the company builds a network of staff who are not only dedicated to their jobs, but also to the idea of supporting each other. “We very much foster the idea of teamwork,” said Melle. “I have phenomenal employees; they’re fantastic. And it is very much a family-type culture inside of the building.” And that family mindset doesn’t go unnoticed by guests. According to Melle, the Home Inn and Suite’s team of employees is one of the hotel’s biggest draws. In particular, the hotel’s spa has recently gained a lot of local attention due, in part, to its employees. “We were just voted the No. 1 spa in Swift Current, as well, from all of the wonderful work the team in the spa has done,” said Melle. In addition, guests are attracted to the hotel’s amenities, such as the hot complimentary hot breakfast, poll, waterslide, whirlpool and it location in Swift Current; it was built just off of the Trans-Canada Highway, and is in close proximity to the Living Sky Casino and several of Swift Current’s shopping options. The building itself, said Melle, has also been known to bring in guests. “The hotel has a beautiful ambiance; it was very well appointed for a limited-service hotel,” Melle explained. More information about the Home Inn and Suites, including booking information, can be found at homeinnswiftcurrent.ca.

10TH Anniversary With this year marking Windscape Kite Festival's tenth anniversary, festival organizers are planning an even more exciting event for June 21 & 22, 2014. Featuring a number of award-winning kite artists and performers, including a team of stunt flyers from Illinois, kite artists coming all the way from the UK and a kite team from Holland, Windscape 2014 promises to entertain the entire family. “What makes this kite festival special for me is that the whole weekend is designed for kids,” explained Ron Bohart, a kite builder from Oregon who attended last year's festival. “There wasn't an unhappy kid face anywhere.” A wide variety of activities are available for kids of any age, for a very nominal fee. With a straw bale maze, mystery sand pile full of prizes, splatter mural wall, bubble station, kite building, face painting, coloring contests, kite lessons, candy drops, temporary tattoos, helium balloons, paper airplanes, balloon sculpting, kids can stay busy for the entire weekend. Last year's festival saw the introduction of a brand-new station where kids can learn to juggle, spin plates, and balance feathers, which was a huge hit – especially with older participants. “It's our goal to make this festival accessible to everyone,” noted festival organizer Shann Gowan. “We try to get a well-rounded group of entertainers so there really is a huge variety of stuff going on throughout the weekend. It's a great way for the entire family to come out and enjoy the beautiful

Saskatchewan skies.” The festival relies heavily on support from the 350+ dedicated volunteers, staff members, and sponsors, who all contribute to ensure the event's success. With their help, Windscape Kite Festival has become one of Canada's largest kite festivals, bringing in artists and performers from across the globe to perform in Swift Current, Saskatchewan.

“It was a pleasure performing at this event,” added Vancouver's talented Tristan Underwood, who performed at Windscape 2013. “It's truly one of the best festivals I've ever attended.” In addition to some great kites, performances, and activities going on throughout the day, Windscape Kite Festival runs in conjunction with Long Day's Night music festival – so festival goers have the chance to come out in the evening for even more entertainment. With award-winning Canadian performers such as Corb Lund and the Hurtin' Albertans, The Standfields, The Dudes and Library Voices, the festival offers a great way to enjoy fantastic music during the longest nights of the year. “Some people travel each year to attend our festival, and we try to make sure that each year brings something new and exciting for them to enjoy,” explained Gowan. “We see more and more people attending as our festival grows, and it's important to us to continue to provide a bigger and better event.”
