YOU’RE INVITED TO

SPECTACULAR 2014 BY JENNIFER JACOBY-SMITH OF SP CREATIVE FEATURES

There is so much to see and experience at the 49th Bridal Spectacular this year. Close to 65 exhibitors will offer the latest trends on everything you need for a stylish, spectacular wedding this season, including fashions, florists, venues, music, event design, décor, cakes, travel agencies and more! Obrodovich was quick to point out it doesn’t matter whether you’re planning a very traditional wedding or something more modern such as a destination wedding, there are plenty of vendors who will appeal to you at the Bridal Spectacular. With the increase in the number of destination weddings, there are more and more wedding services such as travel agencies and photographers who cater specifically to these types of nuptials and they will have booths set up. As always, the highlight is the fashion show. Attendees will get a glimpse of the latest in fashions for the whole bridal party. The fashion show will feature gowns by Brides N Belles and mens wear by Tux and Tails. Honeymoon wear by Klassique Design will also be on the catwalk. The fashions will be modeled by SHE Models representing all sizes of brides. “There is so much available to brides now,” says Obrodovich. “They can go with a traditional beaded type gown or something more modern looking. This year’s gowns are more beautiful than ever.” One of the latest trends showing up on many bridal runways are more coloured gowns. “And the shoes…” gushes Obrodovich. Gone are the traditional white satin shoes or sandals. There are as many options as there are brides. It’s the greatest place to make a statement – with blinged-out heels or funky flats. Obrodovich adds, brides aren’t the only ones showcasing high style on their wedding day. “The guys have so many options now. And you can even mix it up with traditional and funky looks.” The ability of a bride to uniquely customize their special day is almost limitless. Finding the right vendor, venue and products can be utterly overwhelming. The Bridal Spectacular collects all of the wedding vendors in one place so you can plan, shop, and dream all at the same time. “There’s always something new for each area of weddings. That’s why brides should come out and see what’s new and what’s available, like in room décor. Those

wedding rentals people are amazing. They have wonderful ideas,” says Obrodovich. The Bridal Spectacular goes Sept. 21 from 1 to 5 p.m. at TCU Place. Admission is $10 for brides and guests. Brides will be entered to win a deluxe bridal package worth over $9000.

There’s a battle underway that began officially three years ago. But it’s been agitating under the surface for much longer. Now it has become a full blown conflict with broader implications reaching as far as Washington. When Stephen Lang started his company Mon Cheri in1991, a leading bridal gown and wedding dress manufacturer, he never dreamt that one day a wedding dress counterfeiting racket would rise up to reach around the globe. But with fraudulent websites advertising counterfeit dresses multiplying and no one taking action, he decided enough was enough. Launched in 2011 by Lang and others in the industry, the American Bridal and Prom Industry Association (ABPIA) represents the special occasion dress industry in the US and has grown to over 400 members. Lang serves as president of the board of directors for ABPIA. He estimates Mon Cheri has lost 5 to 7 per cent of potential growth due to counterfeiting. The fake dresses are nothing like the original according to Lang. “When I make a wedding gown that retails for $2000 it’s made of silk and has 60,000 hand sewn beads on it. It’s impossible for someone to pay $129 and think they’re getting the real thing. Impossible. They see the pictures on the fraudulent website which are lifted from my website, and they think they’re getting the real thing and they’re not. Someone says I can get you a Mercedes for $10,000 right off the lot, you’ve got to believe there’s a problem,” says Lang. Mon Cheri has 10 designers and ships to 80 countries around the world. Dresses cross the US border by mail and are sent from China winter 2014 edition

as “gifts.” Anything valued under $200 attracts no notice. “We went the normal route and went to customs and everybody said, ‘Well we’re not sure how to handle it, we can’t handle the volume, we can’t check this, we can’t check everything’,” says Lang. “So as a result we formed the ABPIA, and we went the route of federal courts. What we did is we filed law suits against websites.” There are literally thousands of websites advertising counterfeit gowns. The ABPIA started with 1200 websites and are now up to about 2500. “Not one website has defended itself. They won’t come here of course, to defend themselves, so we have default judgments against them,” says Lang. “We’re working with PayPal, we have frozen many, many, many hundreds of thousands of dollars sitting in PayPal accounts that the court will eventually turn over to us. But it’s a real clear and present danger.” Local bridal shops like Brides N Belles are facing a similar situation. “What they’re doing, even on Kijiji, what you’ll see is an exact picture of a beautiful ‘Mori Lee’ wedding gown but the price is a third of the price of what this gown is,” says owner Debbie Simpson. “You send your measurements and they guarantee, they say, that they’ll make the gown to fit you, that if you’re not completely satisfied you’ll get a full refund.” Simpson says three weeks later you have a dress and it doesn’t look at all like the picture. “It isn’t a Mori Lee because you can’t buy them online. All the companies that deal with bridal shops do not sell online. If they did we couldn’t compete with those prices.” When the girls try to get a refund from China, suddenly no one speaks English anymore. Bridal satin is a common fabric used to make genuine gowns. In one example Simpson saw, a bride-to-be got a dress from a counterfeiter that was made from

lingerie satin which is much thinner than bridal satin and it hung like a nightgown on the girl. It had a lace-up back which stretched endlessly when tightened. The dress had no lining, no crinoline, no boning in the bodice and was essentially shapeless. Simpson says reps from the companies she deals with have told her there’s nothing they can do. What they can do at Brides N Belles is offer prospective brides the exceptional experience of trying on wedding dresses. Alterations are provided in store, with two separate fittings. Brides do not need an appointment – they can come in and try on as many dresses as they like and take the time they need. ABPIA has taken their case to Washington where Lang is in conversations with Senator Menendez in foreign relations. Counterfeiting and fraudulent websites are not limited to the bridal industry and Washington is looking at broad measures to protect other industries. Their intervention will involve working with customs and the justice department. “The RCMP called me and said we’ve seen what you’re doing, and we want to join in. And then the American Apparel and Footwear Association which represents all the major apparel brands out of NYC and California called me and they’ve thrown their hat into the ring.” Independent retailers can feel powerless, but Lang is hoping for a galvanization effect. Hopefully brides looking to save a few dollars by buying a counterfeit dress online can begin to appreciate the broader effects of their actions that, collectively, go well beyond having to look at that cheap counterfeit wedding dress in the photos forever. Simpson reflects, “I’m never going to be rich, but I go home every day with a clear conscience.”

Invite a barista to your wedding! BY BLAIR BRAITENBACH OF SP CREATIVE FEATURES

By marrying coffee catering with wedding events, two local baristas are confident they’ve created a match made in heaven. While attending school and working in cafes, long-time friends Jordon Jeschke and Braden McFie saw an opportunity to bring something new and different to the city and area’s wedding industry. By combining their years of coffee brewing expertise, they came up with Cultura Espresso Bar Specialty Coffee Catering, which has been serving local weddings and special events for a year-and-a-half now. “It’s been a blast with the amount of people we get to meet and chat with,” exclaims Jeschke. “People are like ‘this is so awesome, how have we never had this at other weddings before?’ We’ve done pop-ups at stores and craft markets and that sort of thing, but weddings are the most fun.” Although Jeschke acknowledges the surprise of many guests upon seeing cappuccinos, espressos and lattes presented at wedding events, he perceives the pairing as a natural fusion. In addition to the quality roasts they provide with their tantalizing aromas and rich flavours, each drink is topped with a frothy design accent such as a heart or a leaf. It’s these special touches that Jeschke says inspires a fancy and whimsical element to the formal galas. “It tends to be more of an experience thing, in it’s as much about the drink as it is with the smells and sounds. People like the feeling that brings, like being in a cafe and not in some big hall,” Jeschke says, adding they make all their own syrups inhouse. He further explains the catering company can tailor any package to satisfy the bride’s and groom’s needs. Though Cultura Espresso Bar typically keeps things simple with light and medium roasts to cater to a broad audience, the wedding couple can choose from a variety of flavours they would like served, with many types of teas also available. Jeschke adds he and McFie service both wet and dry events, and are available for full wedding receptions or as an in-between ceremony and reception option. What really sets Cultura Espresso Bar apart, according to Jeschke, is the quality of their roasts. Supplied by Toronto’s page 8

Pilot Coffee Roasters, their beans are organically sourced via direct trade. Jeschke explains that direct trade is a step above fair trade in that a supplier has immediate contact with the farmer, ensuring better prices for the grower and a more codependent relationship between buyer and farmer. Pilot Coffee Roasters’ sound reputation for great product and moral business relationships was sealed with its 2014 micro roaster of the year award from Roast Magazine. The win for Pilot Coffee Roasters was also a win for Cultura Espresso Bar, says Jeschke. “People are a lot more aware and beginning to view coffee the same as other drinks like wine and beer, and realizing it matters where the product is grown,” explains Jeschke. “For instance, when it comes to wine, the type of soil and countries where grapes are grown matters and coffee is the same way. People now are wanting to know where coffee comes from, whether it’s grown ethically and if people are doing the best to brew it properly and not just covering up with sugar and whipping cream.” For more information and catering rates, e-mail Cultura Espresso Bar at culturaespresso@gmail.com or visit them on Facebook at Cultura Espresso Bar.

YOUR

A forest wedding? Why not! A destination wedding in Maui with an exciting, mock “amazing race” event? Spectacular! Your wedding day can be almost anything, but primarily needs to reflect who you are. Whatever it is, Lux Events will partner closely with you to fulfill your dream, as they did for these weddings. From that misty-eyed moment when she said “yes,” till the last guest leaves the wedding, there are some good reasons to let someone else handle all the planning. “We offer full service wedding planning. We kind of swoop in and take it all off their plates,” says Molly Lux, owner of Lux Events. “We like to see the whole process through from the very, very beginning to the very, very end. We present the couple with choices and they say “a “or “b” and we go from there and it’s very easy; it’s very painless.” Easy and painless can be very attractive to many couples. “We’re finding that we work with very busy professionals, sometimes they’re a little bit older, second marriages, not always, but they’re professionals, they have the vision, they have the budget, but they just don’t have the time or even the will to plan their wedding.” Lux Events can also save couples money. They’ve been planning weddings for nearly five years and have considerable insider knowledge on processes and vendors. Most people planning a wedding are first-timers. “We’ve done it so many times that you just get good at it. We do this for a living, every day all day, so we know where to save money and streamline processes and just make it easier on the client,” says Lux.

DREAMS

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 11

LUX Events works with professional couples as a partner in planning to create dream weddings that reflect the individuality of the couple. Owner Molly Lux and designer/coordinator Kristen Pawson bring their understanding of the couple’s lifestyle, knowledge of current trends and creative savvy to each wedding they design.

Molly Lux, who does design and planning, and Kristen Pawson, designer and coordinator, are the face of Lux Events. They do weddings with 30 guests up to a couple hundred, with a team that works behind the scenes on research, set-up and take-downs. When people come with ideas they’ve seen elsewhere or in a magazine, Lux sees the vision too and dreams become possible. “Nowadays every single bride has a Pinterest board of thousands of images they’ve collected over the years before they become engaged.” Lux Events takes those images and then explores the couple’s lifestyle – what kind of artwork do they have on the wall, do they like to travel/read, do they have animals, how did he propose. A design presentation to the couple factors in this information as well as details relating to flowers, the gown, lighting, a custom layout, theme expression and more. “We’re very good at seeing exactly what they want. We’ve never had to go back and redo,” says Lux. Lux Events recently completed a stylized photo shoot reflecting trends for 2015. They’re seeing a lot of off the shoulder wedding gowns and dresses with open backs, “very loose and flowy, nothing structured.” Lux says bridesmaid dresses are returning to long and formal styles in colours, away from the trend of the generic black dress you can wear again. “The colours we’re seeing are deep berry colours – deep red, pinkish, maroony, deep purples and greens, those are the colours for 2015. We’re also seeing very simple but very polished hair and makeup so a ponytail, very clean make-up, not heavy at all. It looks like she’s just wearing lipstick but you can tell there’s more.”

page 12

Lux adds that grooms are coming into the spotlight a bit more. “What we’re seeing is more focus on the groom having a very form-fitted suit, not so much renting a tux for the day, but actually investing in a very well made suit that fits him very well. It’s not all about the bride, it’s having him look good too.” For florals, Lux says there’s more of a wild influence; not a structured bouquet, but kind of all over the place. “It looks like she went in the forest and picked a bunch of roses and had some greenery in there too. So, more wild and not so perfect.” Hiring a wedding planner is recommended if you actually want to remember your wedding. Your special day does not have to be overshadowed by worries about what happens when, or missed opportunities to greet guests. “We eliminate wedding amnesia so clients can actually enjoy their day. That’s a huge advantage. We allow them to just be in the moment,” says Lux. Lux Events wants to be the trend setters and push the envelope for the brides in Saskatoon so they can see what’s possible. HOW TO SPOT A FAKE Before purchasing a dress, do your homework. Ensure that you purchase an authentic brand name dress from an authorized retailer by following the guidelines below:

1. Pay close attention to the advertised retail price. Retail prices should be consistent across all authorized retailers. If you discover a store or website that offers a brand name dress substantially lower than others, assume that the dress is a low quality counterfeit fake. Also, be aware of words like “inspired by,” “imitation,” “fake” and “similar to” that appear on the store’s website or advertisement. 2. Visit the brand name’s “Where To Buy” webpage (or store locator). If the store, web page or retail company in question is not listed, it may be part of a counterfeit operation. 3. Challenge the authenticity of the brand name being advertised. Every authentic dress will bear a hangtag and inside garment label with the brand’s logo. If your dress is missing a tag or label, it may be a fake reproduction. Also, double check the spelling of the brand being represented. 4. Take note of the pictures displayed on the website or advertisement. If the imagery used includes a model with a blurred out or pixelated face, cropped off head or displays

any other suspicious photo-changing feature, the website or advertisement may be selling counterfeit dresses. 5. Visit the website’s Contact Us page. An address in the United States as well as a telephone should be listed, not just an email address. It is also important to double check that the telephone number isn’t being forwarded to China or another foreign country. Contributed by the American Bridal and Prom Industry Association

Wedding showers break with tradition The custom of wedding showers began in the 19th century and continues to present day, primarily in North America and Australia. Guests traditionally “shower” the bride-to-be with all the necessities (and some fun extras) that she will need after she ties the knot. These gifts will help the soon-to-be-married couple establish a home together. Bridal showers are steeped in tradition, but today’s bridal showers continue to veer off the beaten path. Nowadays, bridal showers feature fun and games much like a party having nothing to do with a wedding. The bridal website, TheKnot.com, identifies these key trends in modern bridal showers. COUPLES’ SHOWERS: Modern couples who like to be allinclusive are now planning bridal showers that cater to mixed audiences. Dubbed a “couple shower,” these parties include female and male friends and relatives. Gifts are still the main focus of the event, but they’re varied and include guy-friendly items within the mix of household goods. POWER SHOWERS: Many are familiar with the terms “man cave” and “bromance” but few may know that there are now wedding showers geared entirely around the groom. Known as “power showers”, these events focus on the groom-to-be, who is showered with a bevy of gadgets and power tools that are certain to

Brides - n - Belles Ltd.

stock his future garage. The parties are decidedly more testosteronefriendly and can include golf outings, poker nights or action movie flicks as possible themes. DESTINATION/ACTIVITY SHOWERS: Rather than having guests hang around a restaurant watching gift after gift get unwrapped, some bridal parties opt to throw an activity shower. These showers are focused around a particular activity. For example, ladies may be treated to a day at the spa. Other ideas include horseback riding at a stable or a day at the ballpark. Because hosting an activity shower for dozens of people may get expensive, these types of showers may be reserved for only your closest friends and family members. BRIDE-INVOLVED SHOWERS: The idea of walking into a room and being surprised by friends and family members is appealing to some brides-to-be but not everyone. Some brides prefer not to be surprised by a shower and actually would like to have a role in the planning of the party. However, this is delicate ground on which to tread, considering there may be differences over where the party is held and even the overall experience of the party. These type of showers should be discussed before any plans are made, and tasks should be delegated in accordance with those plans. (MNS)

Curvy Bride

STYLE FOR THE BY JEANNIE ARMSTRONG SP CREATIVE FEATURES EDITOR

Every bride, of every size, deserves to be her most beautiful on her wedding day! With that philosophy in mind, seven months ago, the sister team of Kimberley and Kayla Camboia opened W Bridals Curvy Couture in downtown Saskatoon — a bridal shop that caters to plus-size, curvy and hard-to-fit women. W Bridals doesn’t even display wedding gowns by size. Instead, gowns are grouped by style category. “We’ve taken the sizes off the dresses and grouped them as: ‘Glamourous, Fabulous, Timeless and Vivacious’,” says Kimberley Camboia. In a society that continues to idolize skinny celebrities, ‘Size 0’ has become the figure type to aspire to. However, according to the Association for Canadian Studies, the average Canadian woman weighs 155 pounds, has a 33-inch waist, and wears clothing in sizes 12 to 14. “Formal wear fits about one to two sizes smaller than your street clothes, and that’s a little unfair. If you normally wear a size 10 or 12, when you start shopping for bridalwear, you discover you’re a size 14 or 16. According to industry standards, that’s a plus-size,” explains Camboia. “When you start shopping for a wedding dress, you might go from being a traditional size eight in street clothes to being in the ‘double digits’ gasp! or from a regular size 16 to a ‘size 20’! Those numbers put incredible stress on us as women. We decided to not abide by the rules,” says Camboia. “At W Bridals, the bride gets the opportunity to shop by the dresses that she thinks are pretty and that she’d like to try on, instead of shopping by size. You’re not limited by a number or

page 16

size. You get to shop the whole store!” The spacious store features every style of gown imaginable. “We have everything from mermaids and fit-n-flares to ballgowns and A-lines. There are straps and strapless; low back and high back,” says Camboia. W Bridals Curvy Couture has brought in plus-size specific gown collections by outstanding design houses such as Callista. “We’re also bringing in gowns from designers like Mori Lee and Kenneth Winston, who typically are displayed in sizes four, six, eight and 10, and we’re ordered them in sizes 16 to 28,” says Camboia. This range of gowns allows W Bridals the flexibility to fit every figure type beautifully. “Plus-size specific lines have a different measurement structure. There’s about a one-inch difference between the bust, waist and hip measurements,” she explains. “The gowns we are ordering in from Mori Lee and Kenneth Winston have a three- to four-inch difference between measurements, so those gowns are a great fit for really curvy women.” On-site seamstress, Eddie Camboia, (Kimberley and Kayla’s mom), ensures every wedding and bridesmaid gown is a perfect fit, utilizing her 15 years of experience in bridal alterations. What style of gown is most flattering to the curvy bride? “A curvy woman can wear everything and anything. They’re not limited by the fact that they’re curvy. If anything, they make the dresses look better because their figures highlight the true shape of the gown and the details that are on it,” says Camboia.

At W Bridals Curvy Couture, wedding gowns aren’t grouped by size. They’re displayed by style category: “Glamourous, Fabulous, Timeless and Vivacious.” Supplied photo

“The big thing that makes that possible is their confidence. We try through the dresses and through the experience we offer, to get them to see themselves through our eyes, through their fiancé’s eyes or their mother’s eyes – to see that they’re beautiful. They don’t need to change. The person that they’re marrying loves them exactly how they are – not 50 pounds lighter from now,” she says. “We want them to feel confident and beautiful in who they are in their skin, as they are here today. When you get them to feel confident, it’s amazing how the common perception of beauty really changes.” With 11 years of experience in the bridal industry, Camboia knew this was a sector of the business that was being underserved. The reaction to the opening of W Bridals Curvy Couture has proven that the Camboia sisters’ instincts were correct. “The reception has been far more positive than we ever expected. It’s absolutely wonderful,” says Camboia. Brides-to-be are arriving at W Bridals from across and

outside of the province. “One bride lives eight hours away, in Canoe Lake. We’ve had brides from Manitoba and Alberta. We’re getting some buzz in other parts of the country as well,” says Camboia. “There isn’t another single boutique in all of Canada that does what we do specifically.” The sisters’ novel business idea earned them the 2014 SABEX Award for New Business Venture, just four months after opening their doors. “We were also a finalist in the New Product/ and or Service category. Now we’ve been nominated in the same category for an Abex Award,” says Camboia. She says the awards serve as “a bit of validation that other people recognize the importance of a business like ours.” What is Camboia’s advice to curvy and plus-size brides who often put off shopping for their gowns ? “Don’t be scared. We’ll take care of you!” she says. “Not only are they in a place that’s safe, they’re shopping with other women who have the same concerns. The woman who is on the pedestal next to you is having the same thoughts go through her head.”

Weddings Fantasy becomes reality BY BLAIR BRAITENBACH OF SP CREATIVE FEATURES

DESTINATION Imagine walking down your wedding aisle surrounded by friends and family, but the aisle is in fact a luxurious white sand beach. And instead of a large room like a church or hall, you’re outside under the warm sun amid a backdrop of shimmering blue sea. Such a fantasy has become a common realty for more and more couples as they look to make the most of their special day. According to Tamara Graae, Ixtapa Travel’s destination weddings specialist, excursions to sun-soaked countries like Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica are the perfect way to combine one of the most important days in one’s life with a gorgeous holiday enjoyed alongside friends and family. “I think people just have an idea of what they want from their wedding, and for lots of people getting married on the beach with their toes in the sand is one of them,” Graae says. “I personally attended a destination wedding and it was really nice to see everyone. You get to hang out all week on the beach, go for dinner and it’s a week-long reunion with family and friends. And of course, typically you know the weather is going to be more desirable.” With an extensive variety of locales to choose from, Graae says picking the right country for a destination wedding comes down to price point and schedule. On average, costs range between $1,500-$2,500 per person, depending on the resort and country. Due to convenience and affordability, she says most couples choose all-inclusive packages over higher-priced page 18

destinations like Costa Rica, St. Lucia and Europe. “All-inclusives (to places like Mexico and Dominican Republic) are simplified for their guests and usually provide the most bang for their buck. Those companies and tour operators push for that and often offer perks and make it easy for groups to be accommodated,” Graae explains, noting perks can consist of upgraded suites, anniversary credit and special group pricing. Graae adds that destination weddings create a relaxing and romantic atmosphere for the bride and groom, extending far beyond the actual ceremonial day itself. As such, all-inclusive resorts and spas, in particular, are experts in catering to the happy couples, she says. “In any scenario you are being taken care of, which is why so many people pick lovely all-inclusive resorts. They really do make your special day special while you’re being taken care of and pampered,” she asserts. Flexibility is key in ensuring a successful destination wedding, notes the specialist. While she encourages engaged couples to come up with wish lists, they must also be realistic in

terms of budget and schedule, not only for themselves, but to accommodate guests travelling to far-flung countries for the big event. “You want to pick a time when you know the majority friends and family will be able to make it so it’s convenient for them,” Graae explains. Regardless of where couples choose to get married, Graae stresses the importance of being properly informed on local customs and marriage requirements beforehand. For instance, in Mexico a marriage isn’t considered legal until the bride and groom have been in the country for at least three business days, Graae explains. For considerations like these and many others – such as special requests, hotel and resort expertise, event customization, off-resort excursions, travel insurance, etc. – it’s always beneficial to have an experienced and knowledgeable travel agent providing the leg work and ensuring all preparations are in order, says Graae. “We guide everyone on the process. Travel agencies and agents have relationships with suppliers, hotels and airlines, and that really helps. Because of our relationships we can help people get further than if they’re trying to book it on their own,” Graae says. This ensemble of professional musicians will perform any kind of music, anywhere, for any kind of event, with any number of players. Recent weddings have featured groomsmen arriving to music from Star Wars and couples exiting their ceremony to the music of Viva la Vida by Coldplay. THE HISTORY OF

THE TUX The origins of the modern tuxedo remains a topic for debate, but one of the more widely known tales of the tuxedo’s beginning traces this classic look to a wealthy tobacco magnate of the 19th century. Pierre Lorillard lived with his family in a residential colony called Tuxedo Park, which was roughly 40 miles northwest of New York City. The Lorillards were popular in social circles, and Pierre helped establish the area as a prime hunting and fishing destination. Lorillard also developed a social organization called the Tuxedo Club, which regularly hosted balls. At the time, men wore dinner jackets with long tails to formal events. However, Lorillard wanted something different and modern, and he commissioned a tailless black jacket to wear to the Tuxedo Club’s Autumn Ball. Lorillard got cold feet in time for the ball and did not wear the shorter jacket. However, his son, Griswold, did wear the short jacket and received much praise. Soon the style was copied and worn in various social circles across the country. The “tuxedo” was born, and soon became a timeless classic. (MNS)

While the look of a wedding cake is certainly important, cakes should not only look good, but taste good as well. Vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream frosting was once the gold standard. But today’s couples are being more adventurous with their wedding cakes and winning rave reviews from guests along the way. The vast scope of wedding cake flavour choices available to brides and grooms is astonishing. Options may range from the traditional to something adventurous and daring. Keeping in mind that couples will need to please the masses, finding a compromise between plain vanilla and a mocha-chile-coconut surprise is essential. Otherwise, they risk an unpopular flavour and a lot of wasted, expensive cake. Some couples shy away from more adventurous cakes because they fear something chocolately or not white in colour will not be well suited to a wedding reception. Such couples should keep in mind that any flavour of cake can be hidden beneath layers of pearly white fondant or royal icing. Therefore, the sky is the limit with regard to flavor combinations. Those who might want to veer from tradition can consider

these clever cake combinations. LEMON CAKE WITH VANILLA BUTTERCREAM: Lemons are tart, juicy and refreshing, helping to cleanse the palate after a rich meal. Lemon cake, with its summery feel, is tailor-made for summer weddings. The flavour is popular enough to appeal to many, but just a little different to add an unexpected zip of flavour. CHOCOLATE CAKE WITH CHOCOLATE GANACHE AND MOCHA FILLING: True chocoholics will be hard-pressed to resist such a decadent flavor profile. Chocolate can be sweet and satisfying and a welcome change from the vanilla cakes commonly served. For traditionalists, the cake can be covered with a white chocolate ganache. Or couples can ask that the cake be adorned with white sugar roses for an eye-appealing contrast. Chocolate cakes covered with autumn hued flowers go over well at fall weddings. RED VELVET CAKE WITH CREAM CHEESE FROSTING: Red velvet cake was once a regionally specific staple, but now has grown steadily in popularity across the country. Red velvet has quickly become the new classic, as its vibrant red colouring offers a shock of something different, while the flavour is mild for those who are not comfortable taking risks. The richness and creaminess of cream cheese is irresistible.

Cake

WHITE CAKE WITH CHOCOLATE MOUSSE: Couples who want a bit of chocolate but do not want to be overwhelmed can select a white cake that is filled with light and rich chocolate mousse. It’s the perfect blend of vanilla and chocolate for guests who enjoy both. VARIETY TIERS: Those who cannot settle on just one flavour can have different flavours on each tier of their cakes. This gives guests some flavourful variety and enables them to pick their favorite flavour combination. Brides- and grooms-to-be who have specific flavours in mind can ask their bakers to include two cupcakes with the wedding cake. Then the couple can enjoy their own mini cakes while the rest of the guests enjoy a more classic cake. In addition, an assortment of cupcakes in lieu of one cake can give guests the opportunity to sample several different flavours. (MNS)

TAKE THE

A wedding cake is the piece de resistance of the wedding ceremony. Guests anxiously await the unveiling of the cake near the end of the festivities. Modern cakes are showpieces grander in scale than in years past. As bakers and confectioners hone their skills with fondant, buttercream and gum paste even further, the results are often impressive, awe-inspiring cake designs.

PICTURE PERFECT

How find the right wedding photographer Long after the final toast has been made or the last couple has left the dance floor, wedding photos will help couples relive the wonderful memories of their ceremonies and receptions. Wedding photographers realize the important role photography plays in a wedding. Photos are how couples document their nuptials, and the right photographer can make all the difference. The following tips can help guarantee a successful wedding shoot and beautiful photos to recall the best moments of the day.

CONFIDENCE IS IMPORTANT. A good photographer will be able to direct photo subjects and get everyone to participate and in line. Brides and grooms likely won’t want to handle such tasks on their own, so a confident and firm yet cordial photographer can be an invaluable asset.

SEEK REFERRALS. There are scores of wedding photographers, and some are better than others. Word of mouth from other couples can help. Referrals can offer insight into a photographer’s personality and his or her abilities to work with the wedding party and guests throughout the day.

DISCUSS A BACKUP PLAN WITH THE PHOTOGRAPHER. Mishaps happen, even on the most carefully planned wedding day. Discuss what the photographer does to safeguard your digital photo files. Are they backed-up to a cloud or a secured offsite server? Does the photographer bring along a second camera in case the primary one has a malfunction? What happens if he or she is ill on the day of the wedding? How is a replacement chosen? Understanding how the photographer adapts to unforseen situations can make you feel more confident in choosing one photographer instead of another. The camera gear should also have adequate memory to store all of the photos, and a few backup batteries can’t hurt, either.

COMMUNICATION IS KEY. An important component of wedding photography actually starts well before the wedding day. The way a photographer communicates with you about your wishes and desired shots is very important, as this is when to discuss specific shots you want taken during the ceremony, such as whether the bride wants to be seen and pose with the groom prior to tying the knot. In addition, this is a great time for the photographer to get familiar with each venue’s rules regarding vendors.

page 24

PREPARE A SHOOT LIST. Meet with the photographer before the wedding and provide a list of all the shots you absolutely need to get. This way the photographer can plan for these as well as capture the candid moments throughout the day.

CONSIDER HIRING A PHOTOGRAPHER’S ASSISTANT OR SECOND SHOOTER. The photographer is less likely to miss a shot or fail to capture various perspectives of the wedding if he or she works with a partner. While one photographer is doing close-up portraits, the other may be capturing candid moments from onlookers from another angle. KNOW WHAT EACH PACKAGE INCLUDES. The photographer should clearly spell out which items and services are included as part of the contract. There should be no surprises when it’s time to pay the balance of the photographer’s fees, so go over each itemized detail to be sure the package in your contract is the one you really want. GET TO KNOW THE PHOTOGRAPHER AS A PERSON. It can be difficult to loosen up in front of the lens, particularly if you do not have a good rapport with the photographer. Do not judge the photographer on his or her body of work alone. You will likely grow more comfortable with the photographer if you get to know him or her in the months leading up to your wedding. TREND REPORT What are the hot new dress trends for Fall 2014 and Spring 2015? According to The Knot, here are the top 10 looks dominating bridal fashion runways for the upcoming season: 1. NAKED LACE Lace is in the spotlight this bridal season, in a brand new way. The industry’s leading designers are turning up the wow factor by layering romantic lace patterns over a nude underlay. 2. THE CROP TOP BRIDE The two-piece wedding dress gets a daring remake, with designers combining ballgown skirts with crop tops that show off a hint of midriff. A look that’s definitely not for every bride!

A drop-waist gown will flatter almost every figure type. Designer Zac Posen included this ivory organza Mikado gown with lace cap sleeves in his Spring 2015 collection for David’s Bridal. Photo: David’s Bridal

3. LATTICE DETAILS

7. VERTICAL BEADING

Traditional tulle gets a modern twist with the use of basketweave patterns and lattice details, large and small.

Designers like Jenny Packham and Peter Langner embellished their slim-fitting mermaid gowns with rows of vertical beading. While turning up the dazzle, column beadwork also has a slimming effect by elongating the bride’s figure.

4. FLOATING SKIRTS Ethereal layers of tulle and silk add sheer volume to the classic skirt this season. Bridal design houses including Christos, Marchesa and Reem Acra embraced this light-as-air look. 5. CAPES The strapless gown gets a fashionable cover-up, perfect for walking down the aisle, or chilly outdoor photos. More bolero than batgirl, the capelets are often fashioned from sheer tulle or delicate lace. 6. SILVERY GREY GOWNS Metallics are a hot trend in ready-to-wear fashions this season. Now bridal designers are turning to silvery metallic and painterly pastels for the bride who wants to stand out from the sea of white.

This satin sheath gown from the Truly Zac Posen Collection is totally on trend, with its sheer chiffon capelet. Photo: David’s Bridal

8. DROP-WAIST GOWNS Zac Posen and Kelly Faetanini are among the top designers who lowered waistlines on their bridal gowns this season. A structured bodice with a drop-waist skirt flatters almost every type of figure. 9. EMBELLISHED BACKS We all know how much attention Pippa Middleton received when walking down the aisle. Now designers are drawing attention to the bride’s back as well, with the use of romantic lace appliques and embroidery embellishments. 10. PLUNGING NECKLINES Here’s a sexy option to strapless: the plunging V-neck design that made the cut in collections by Carolina Herrera and Ines Di Santo. For more details, visit www.theknot.com

CHECKING IN

Things to consider when choosing a hotel for your guests Couples must make a host of decisions when they decide to tie the knot. For those couples having a more traditional wedding, the choice of accommodations for guests is one of the bigger decisions to make, especially if many of your guests will be coming from out of town. On the surface, finding a hotel for your guests might seem as simple as locating a place that offers the most competitive rate. But while price is important, there are many additional factors couples must consider when choosing a hotel to ensure their guests’ stay is as accommodating as possible. LOCATION Location is perhaps the foremost factor for couples to consider when finding a hotel for their wedding guests. Though cost is important, the location of the hotel should be weighed more heavily than the nightly rate. A more affordable hotel in the middle of nowhere is far less convenient for guests than spending a few extra dollars per night on a room. That’s especially true for a wedding with many out-of-town guests who may or may not be renting a vehicle while they are in town. The hotel should be within reasonable proximity to the site of the ceremony and the reception venue. TRANSPORTATION Getting guests to and from your wedding and reception is another factor to consider when choosing accommodations for your guests. A hotel that provides shuttle service to and from the ceremony and reception can be very convenient for guests and the couple, who won’t have to worry about how their guests who won’t be driving will get from the hotel to the venue. Many hotels even provide shuttle service to nearby airports for their guests, which can save guests money on cab fare when the time comes for them to head back home. PROXIMITY TO NIGHTLIFE Weddings have a way of turning into reunions, both for families and friends, and that often makes the night before the wedding just as fun as the wedding reception. When comparing accommodations for your guests, look for a hotel that has nightlife within walking distance. This can range from a hotel with several restaurants nearby to a hotel in the heart of a bustling city home to both restaurants and nightclubs or bars. Many couples tend to spend the night before their wedding enjoying a rehearsal dinner with their parents and members of the bridal party, so finding a hotel that allows guests to enjoy a night on the town without venturing too far from the hotel is a thoughtful gesture your guests are sure to appreciate.

page 28

PROXIMITY TO OTHER HOTELS Some hotels will only block off so many rooms per wedding party. So couples with larger guest lists might want to look for a hotel that’s close to other hotels and establish smaller blocks at various hotels rather than one large block at just one hotel. This gives guests options with regard to their accommodations, and when the hotels are close to one another, it’s still easy for guests to get in touch with friends or family members who are also attending the wedding but might be staying at another hotel. COST Though cost should not be the deciding factor when arranging for lodging for your guests, it definitely merits substantial consideration. That’s even more true if many of your guests will be coming from out of town. Out-of-town guests will have to pay to travel to your wedding, so you should look for a hotel with a reasonable rate to mitigate the costs of that travel. (MNS)

HERE’S TO THE PERFECT TOAST

It’s the time of year when happy couples walk down the aisle in front of their families and friends and begin their lives together. Wedding season is also a time when people close to the couple are expected to give a meaningful toast to celebrate the occasion. 8. LIMIT ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION. You’ll want to be in top form when delivering the toast.

Toastmasters International, the global organization devoted to communication and leadership skills development, offers proven tips for delivering a memorable toast with confidence and finesse. Below are Toastmasters’ 10 best practices for honoring the newlyweds: 1. IDENTIFY YOURSELF. Open with a brief explanation of your relationship to the couple before beginning the toast. 2. BE PREPARED. The best toasts include an opening, a body AND CONCLUSION. 3. STAY ON TOPIC. Although you may be nervous, stay focused on the couple and their special day. 4. GET PERSONAL. A toast should be original, heartfelt and customized for the occasion. 5. USE HUMOR, but avoid telling potentially embarrassing stories and using offensive language. 6. BE CREATIVE. Avoid cliches and consider using a relevant quote to illustrate your words. 7. BE BRIEF. A toast should last no longer than three minutes.

9. STAND; lift your glass by the stem and say, “I’d like to propose a toast.” Pause to allow guests to shift their attention toward you and give them time to lift their glasses. When you start speaking, lower your glass to about waist height. 10. PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT. Rehearse your message in advance in front of a group of friends. “Whether it’s the best man, maid of honor, father of the bride or another speaker chosen to honor the newly married couple, what they say will be remembered,” says George Yen, Toastmasters 2013-14 International President, whose daughter, Keli is getting married in October. “A toast sets the tone for the wedding reception, so it’s important that the person speaking is prepared, poised and confident.” In addition to toasting advice, Toastmasters offers many speech tips for special occasions. To practice your toasts or speeches, find a Toastmasters club near you by visiting www.toastmasters.org/findaclub.

CHOOSE A WEDDING DATE WISELY Many couples find themselves bombarded with questions the moment they become engaged, and perhaps no questions is more common than, “When is the wedding?” Although a number of couples would prefer to bask in the excitement of their engagement, some couples feel pressured to rush into picking a wedding date. Choosing a wedding date without giving it much consideration may make things more difficult down the road. Rather than jumping head first into any decisions, couples should give thought to any and all dates and decide if there are certain times of the year they want to tie the knot or avoid. SEASON When thinking about potential wedding dates, it helps to have a place to start. Some couples find it helpful to start with a particular season and then narrow it down from there. Decide if you prefer the lush greenery of summer or the amazing colour spectrum of an autumn afternoon. Perhaps you envision arriving at the ceremony with a snow-packed landscape amid twinkling holiday lights? Think about the season when you feel most happy and then determine if that time of year is doable. MONTH Certain months may seem perfect, but not for busy professionals or those with limited vacation time at their disposal. For example, early spring may not be good for accountants tallying year-end numbers. Teachers may feel most comfortable tying the knot in the summer when they already have days off. If you run a pool business or a lawn maintenance company, then the summer might not be so good. Keep these factors in mind. HOLIDAYS Some people would like to tie their wedding day to a particular holiday. Valentine’s Day is popular for weddings thanks to the romantic sentiments synonymous with the holiday, while some couples prefer Halloween or Christmas weddings. Holiday weddings can be exciting, but they also produce significant obstacles that couples who choose to get married during other times of year don’t have to worry about. Guests may not want to travel or spend time away from their families to attend a holiday wedding. Having a wedding during a holiday may mean competing for vendors and reception spaces. Prices on everything from food to flowers to airline tickets could be higher as vendors cash in on customer demand.

page 30

Valentine’s Day can be popular for weddings, but couples can expect stiff competition for venues due to that popularity. DAY OF THE WEEK It’s less expensive for couples to get married on Fridays and Sundays than Saturday afternoons or evenings. Couples may think that the money saved will be well worth it, but they also should think about how this decision may affect their guests. A Friday wedding requires people to take off from work or school. Sunday weddings may be slightly more convenient, but those who have to get back to work on Monday may be tired from late-night festivities. Couples should anticipate some guests not making it to their weddings when those weddings are not on Saturdays. RELIGIOUS CONSTRAINTS Couples having religious ceremonies should consult with their houses of worship as to which dates are acceptable. Some will not have weddings on days of religious observation. It is wise to consult with a church, synagogue or mosque before booking any other components of the wedding so that you are certain your chosen day is acceptable. ANY AVAILABLE DATES Your wedding date may be dictated by your caterer or wedding hall. If you have a particular venue in mind, you may be limited by their availability. This is a concession you will need to make if your heart is set on this particular location. Planning a wedding can be exciting. But the ball cannot get rolling until couples choose the day they will tie the knot. (MNS)

CANADIANS ARE FRUGAL WEDDING GUESTS Canadians are a thrifty bunch when it comes to wedding gifts, with most spending only $100 or less per person whether giving cash or a gift, according to the latest consumer trends survey from digital offers website RetailMeNot.ca. Almost a third of respondents (32 per cent) spend $51 to $100, while 17 per cent fork out a mere $50 or less. Wedding planners and the newly engaged take note: 20 per cent of respondents will spend less on a gift if there is no open bar, but two-thirds (66 per cent) say a more lavish wedding will not coax them to increase their gift. Overall, 54 per cent say that weddings are a financial burden for guests, and 18 per cent have declined an invite because they could not afford it. Ten per cent admit to regifting a present for a wedding. But before heading to Las Vegas to elope, brides and grooms should know that almost 6 in 10 surveyed (59 per cent) do enjoy attending weddings, and 10 per cent spend at least $200 per person for a gift, led by Ontarians at 16 per cent. British Columbians trail all regions with only 5 per cent willing to break the $200 threshold. Considering Canadians’ frugality when it comes to buying wedding gifts, it’s surprising that only 11 per cent of those surveyed use coupons or discount codes when purchasing wedding registry gifts. However, 54 per cent of those surveyed admit to buying wedding gifts on sale, so they are finding other ways to save. “The costs during wedding season can certainly strain

budgets, especially if you’re attending multiple events,” says Christy Rabil, director of public relations for RetailMeNot, Inc. “A simple step to ease the stress is to start shopping and planning well ahead of time. While there are plenty of deals to be had, our research shows that nearly half of Canadians pay full price for wedding gifts. To avoid busting budgets, guests should consider shopping weeks in advance so there is plenty of opportunity to find the latest deals, order gifts online and save with free standard shipping.”
