ippa Toledo had designed the interior of one floor of a duplex at Tigne Point in a Chinese-inspired style. So when the owner came back to her with another commission - he had bought the apartment beneath his duplex and wanted to turn it into a triplex – she was pleased to hear that this time he wanted another eastern look and was looking for some Indian inspiration. Once the practical aspects of sorting out the structural link between the apartments were concluded – a bespoke staircase was designed for that purpose – the real work could begin. There is no kitchen or dining-room because this is not an independent flat but an additional floor, and there are a kitchen “I was given and dining-room already on the floor above. quite a free The space freed up by that has been used for hand on a comfortably-sized gym and Jacuzzi, and this project, more freedom in the floor-plan all round. and I loved There are two large bedrooms, one of working on which has been decorated in vivid Indian it,” Pippa says. pinks and burnished golds. The upper floors of this triplex already contain a kitchen and dining-room, so there was no need for either in this additional floor. A simple breakfast area in white-painted wood and cool grey-blues is enough for the purposes here.

The living-room space overlooks the harbour and its colour-plan took inspiration from that, but using a much brighter Indian turquoise in keeping with the thematic style chosen for the dÊcor. A few stairs reach the breakfast-table area. One of the owner’s requirements was for an indoor garden area, which led to the creation of this rock-garden-inspired space.

Top Right: The staircase was designed especially to connect the two apartments and turn them into a single living-space. The light, suspended staircase lets the light through instead of swallowing it up and encumbering the area.
Left: The indoor rock garden, with pebbles and succulents, lends a fresh and outdoorsy feel to an area which gets a lot of light already.

One of the two bedrooms is decorated entirely in blue textiles and white-painted wood. The wardrobe doors have a trellis effect over a mirrored base. Dark wooden doors would have loomed large and made the room gloomy.

The Indian-inspired bedroom is a festival of Indian sari colours, with pinks, dark reds, orange and green. A mix of fabric and patterns heightens the textural contrast. The emphasis here is very much on colours and textiles.

Top Left and Right: This dressing-table, mirror and chair are probably the key feature in the bedroom. Imported pieces have been hand-decorated in the typical colors of India to make a focal point that is instantly appealing. The mirrored doors of the large wardrobe are cut in a pattern that reflects the shape of the hanging mirror. Left: A large Indian mirror hangs on a bright pink wall. Below: Indian boxes stand on a bedroom table.
