Imagined Histories

Interpretation From visiting the discovery museum I found inspiration for the smallest of details. The pin dots outlining the eyes of the doll were charming elements of detail. I drew quickly in pencil gathering shapes and silhouettes before using ink and watercolor.

Inspiration I found the details of the shoes charming and it is where my inspiration first began. I was drawn to the teardrop shapes found on the shoes as well as the intricate beadwork outlining these shapes. I have used the teardrop, petal shape within my designs as well as elements of beadwork.

Interpretation I love the two contrasting fabrics used on the sun umbrella, the outer fabric being more practical and the lace adding sophistication. The curves of the umbrella were beautiful. I was very infatuated by the overly curved segments of the umbrella that I wanted to use them within my designs. The inspiration from this is throughout my designs and seen on my final garment with the curved hem shown on the shorts and belled out sleeves.

Interpretation I drew a lot from the men’s grooming briefcase. I found all the little compartments intriguing. I drew quick outlines that I later added more detail to. I also developed a sample print from inspiration taken from one of the items in the compartments however, didn’t take this forward.

Inspiration I adored the details of the silver charm/ jewelry piece. I drew a few details from this and added silver paint to my work to add further effect. I also drew some of the details from the women’s compartment bag. The hidden details of the compact compartment were delightful.

I particularly like the beadwork detail, its very delicate bringing elements of sophistication. I would like to incorporate similar details to my final collection.

Experimental Lace • Delicate • Intricate • Elegant

Development Moularge Playing around with style and drape to get inspiration for my designs. I found this very useful and from this working process I decided I would ideally like to use a soft and flowing fabric.

Experimental moularge • Draping • Initial Research

Development The images shown across these two pages are from my development work. I firstly experimented with moularge before ever starting my designs, this was to get ideas for shapes and silhouette. I found this interesting to do especially when developing the draped fabric on Illustrator and Photoshop. The image to the left shows my prototype and block samples where I was developing my design using black tape to mark out the outline for my shorts.

Development I have selected the five main images that I was most connected to prior my designs. I loved the flowing of the cape and how the sleeves effortlessly belled outwards. I particularly loved the detailing of the beadwork seen on the silk shoes, I thought it was so beautifully elegant. I really liked the use of the lace trim on the umbrella and finally the leaves and petal shapes seen on the heeled boots. These all became part of my inspiration for the final collection.

Samples Experiments

Development I experimented with fabric sampling using different areas of inspiration from the garments and objects seen at the Discovery Museum. I particularly liked creating the samples of lace, despite it being incredibly time consuming. I love the beadwork elements and would like to add touches of beadwork onto applique within the final design.
