With juice bars lining every corner and always-sunny weather, it’s no wonder that Active Living comes naturally to the movers and shakers residing in the city of dreams. As you know, an active way of life doesn’t always come in the form of a push-up or squat. With 329 days of sunshine per year, LA offers endless
opportunities to get a move on outside, and hiking is one of our favorite ways to do it. If you’re planning a trip to California, our sporty sisters in the states have done the legwork for you. Team MNB hit the trails to test the top 10 hikes in Los Angeles – perfect for when you want to shake up your gym routine. Grab your fellow sporty sisters, slap on some sunscreen, dig out your camera, and get exploring!
Runyon Canyon: 1-2 Hours Why We Love it: The perfect place to bring your fellow sporty sister for an active catch up. Bring friendly and energetic pup to roam free and socialize with other furry friends. Runyon Canyon also offers donation-based yoga classes at the bottom of the hill, so you can wind down with sun salutations after your trek. Signature Sights: Hollywood Hills and sweeping views from Downtown LA to Venice beach. If you’re lucky, you may just spot a celebrity or two! Where to Nourish Nearby: Head down to Sunset Boulevard for a mango avocado salad or gluten-free pizza at EVO Kitchen.
hike to Griffith Observatory: 1-2 Hours Why We Love it: Griffith Park impressively covers more than 56 miles of land (90km) across the city, so you’ll never get bored. Take the West Observatory trail up to the Griffith Observatory for some star-spotting of the astronomical variety. Signature Sights: Hollywood Sign, Hollywood, Downtown Los Angeles, Silverlake hills. You may recognize a cinematic location at the Observatory, made famous in a scene with bad boy James Dean in Rebel Without A Cause. Where to Nourish Nearby: Grab a yummy grilled vegetable salad and relax in the outdoor patio of Alcove Cafe, a quaint spot in the heart of Los Feliz.
Hollywood sign hike - Hollyridge Trail: 1-2 Hours Why We Love it: Snap your own picture of the famous Hollywood sign on the Hollyridge trail! This hike wraps along the Western part of Griffith Park behind the 30-foot tall Hollywood sign. Despite the proximity to the iconic landmark, this hike is surprisingly peaceful – perfect for nature lovers. Signature Sights: The Hollywood sign, Lake Hollywood, and several studios on the Burbank side, including Warner Brothers, NBC, and Disney. Where to Nourish Nearby: Head on down to Locali Conscious Convenience post-hike to sip on “The Lulu”, a sublime smoothie with coffee, dates, cinnamon and vanilla.

While pounding the pavement or hitting the gym for an hour in the morning is one of the best ways to start the day, we totally understand that life happens and things pop up that can derail our routine. But just because you might have to forfeit your 5pm boxing class to stay back at work to prepare for a huge presentation, it doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your move routine altogether! Got five minutes to spare? This quick HIIT workout will get your heart rate soaring and work your full body in five minutes flat! Try this circuit: 20 seconds work, 10 seconds rest – complete twice through!
GLUTE BRIDGE Perk up your peach! Lying on the floor (similar to a crunch position), and put your hands by your side. Squeeze your middle and your bottom, push through your heels and bring your hips off the floor to touch the ceiling! Squeeze your butt! Slowly lower down to your starting position.
PUSH UP Shape your shoulders and arms with this classic! Level 1 (knees) or Level 2 (toes), place your hands on the floor about shoulder width apart. Brace the middle, squeeze the butt, and slowly lower yourself down to a push up position. Keep your eyes slightly forward to relax the neck! Big push through your palm to return to your starting position!
MOUNTAIN CLIMBERS One for the heart and the upper body! Set up your Push Up position, this time on your toes. To complete your mountain climber, bring your right knee into your chest, then switch to your left (almost a jogging motion). As always – abs on, butt squeezed, eyes slightly forward! For beginners – go nice and slow, one at a time! For more of a challenge – how many can you complete in 20 seconds?
KICKBACKS Possibly one of my favourite for the behind! Come back to all fours, hand and knees. Brace the essentials! Kick your right leg back behind you until your feel your butt cheek tense – make sure you don’t arch your back! Return your right foot down, and kickback with the left! Alternating your legs!
SUMO SQUAT A favourite to finish!! Come up to a squat position, bringing your feet outside your shoulder width. Squeeze! Lower yourself down into a wide squat, making sure the knees follow the direction of the toes and don’t fall inwards. Push through your heels so you feel that fantastic burn through your legs and butt, come back to your standing position, and squeeze the hips under.
