It felt like a renewal of sorts as I walked by people putting on their Dodger Pride T-shirts and dazzling rainbow attire. The night started off with the usual fanfare of introducing the lineup and the owners of the Dodgers, which now includes minority stake owner, tennis legend Billie Jean King, who came out as gay back in 1981, an incredible feat in itself. Since becoming owners of the Dodgers, Billie Jean and her partner, Ilana Kloss have stressed LGBTQ+ inclusion, so it was interesting to see what this Pride night would be like. Most Pride nights all use the same formula of creating a commemorative item to give away and fly the rainbow flag everywhere for this one night. For this year’s event, there had been a lot of talk within my circle of friends that the ticket prices were higher and that many queer, trans, and gender nonconforming folks, especially who are people of color, cannot afford a $50 nosebleed ticket. I was surprised to see the event was sponsored by Blue Shield and still cost so much for one night of Pride. Perhaps being an ally might include

It was bittersweet and even my friend told me later that she cried a bit while watching for the

same reasons. Overall, it was a great night but I definitely felt conflicted in so many ways. Of course it felt great to be out and feeling the camaraderie of having my community there. During the “Kiss Cam” break we got to see queer couples kissing on the big screen and it lit my heart up. It was also awesome that the Dodgers kicked butt right off the bat in the first inning and won 12-1 with multiple home runs, despite the fact that so many seats were empty. I don’t know if it was because we were all just happy to be around people again or if wearing a mask feels like a veil of protection, but I chatted up a lot of people while waiting in the elevator and Dodger Dog line. !"#$%$&'(%#)%&%*+*,%-.'#/#.01%23%14.%5#1(%23%6.)1%7288(922:;)%<&#0=29%$.(%&9&-:>?

The Sacramento Bee reported last week that the effort to recall Gov. Gavin Newsom is now estimated to be nearly $215 million according to a report compiled by the California Department of Finance based on data from the state’s 58 counties. That’s more than the $200 million local public health o cials requested from Newsom in this year’s budget to help them recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and prepare for future challenges, the SacBee noted. The estimate comes as state agencies prepare for the expected recall election, which has not been scheduled. ecent polling from the niversity of California’s Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies found support for recalling the governor stands at . AIDS was a cruel thief On April 13, 1982, Rep. Henry Waxman, then chair of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health and the Environment convened the first congressional hearing on AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). Waxman’s district included the still unincorporated gay haven of West Hollywood and he went to where the gays were — the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Community Services Center on Highland Ave. in Hollywood. Years later, in presenting Waxman with an award, NIH’s Dr. Anthony Fauci recalled that event. According to an account in the Washington Blade, Rep. Waxman did not mince words. “‘I want to be especially blunt about the political aspects of Kaposi’s sarcoma,’ Rep. Waxman said. ‘This horrible disease afflicts members of one of the nation’s most stigmatized and discriminated-against minorities.’ He continued, ‘There is no doubt in my mind that if the same disease had appeared among Americans of Norwegian descent, or among tennis players, rather than among gay males, the responses of the government and the medical community would have been different.’ He noted that the outbreak of Legionnaire’s Disease a few years earlier appeared to have received greater attention and funding for research and treatment than did the latest outbreaks of Kaposi’s sarcoma and pneumocystis pneumonia among gay men.” Five months later, on Sept. 24, 1982, Waxman and Rep. Phillip Burton introduced legislation to allocate funds to the CDC for surveillance and to the NIH for AIDS research. Dr. James Curran, head of the CDC’s Task Force on Kaposi’s Sarcoma and Opportunistic Infections, estimates that tens of thousands of people may be affected by the disease. Bobbi Campbell, a San Francisco nurse who came out Dec. 10, 1981 in the San Francisco Sentinel as the first KS patient to go public, also testified. The self-proclaimed “KS Poster Boy,“ was asked to translate “cold data into flesh and blood and tears,” and to speak “of the men, my brothers, who have Kaposi’s sarcoma and other illnesses.” Gottlieb was there but he doesn’t remember much — just that his friend Steve Schulte was there and he met Tim Westmoreland, the gay man who staffed and organized the hearing for Waxman. And he remembers the Center as a broken-down old motel with the meeting held outside. It didn’t get much press coverage. Gottlieb does remember his friendship with Ivy Bottini, an artist turned AIDS activist. Bottini’s old friend from Long Island, Ken Schnorr, had collapsed and died in 1982. “After Ken died, something said to me there is more to this than we see,” Bottini told the Blade. “So, for some reason, I just picked up the phone and called the CDC. I had never done that before. ‘Look, this just happened to my friend. Do you have any answers? The hesitancy at the other end of the line, the hemming and the hawing before they would say anything — I just knew it was bad.” The CDC official explained that the bruises on Ken’s body were Kaposi sarcoma, usually found in elderly Jewish men. “And that was the explanation,” she said. “I got off and thought, ‘no, this doesn’t make sense because Ken was one of three first guys diagnosed with Kaposi in town, in West Hollywood, in LA, and that started me on working to find out what the hell was going on. It was just horrible.” Waxman’s hearing was held shortly after Schnorr’s death. Bottini was there. “We all met in the lobby and under the stairs on the first floor,” she said. “Waxman’s basic message was spread the word: Nobody really knows how it’s passed.” “Thousands of deaths and no one cares! No one cares – except us,” an emotional Bottini told Andy Sacher of the Lavender Effect about that time. “That was inhuman what was really happening to gay men. It was inhuman how they were demonized.”

In 2019, Pride Toronto announced that uniformed police o cers would not be permitted to attend any Pride Toronto events. The announcement was preceded by a voting session that took place among Pride Toronto members. Global News, a Canadian news platform, reported a final result of 1 1 1, disallowing police participation in Pride Toronto events. These riots against the violence of the police were led by Black and Brown trans women and queer people. The Stonewall iots propelled gay movements from assimilationist tactics towards unapologetic Pride. These riots worked,” reads Vancouver Pride Society’s statement. The organization also pledged to ensure public safety by participating in calls to defund the police and “commit to learning and convening community dialogues about what these alternative forms of managing public safety look like.”

Gun reform now a top priority of LGBTQ movement It’s been five years since 9 people were killed and 5 others were injured when a man armed with an assault rifle, large capacity magazines, and a heart full of hate attacked the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Fla. On June 12, 201 , Pulse became the second deadliest mass shooting in .S. history. It’s been five years since the families and friends of those taken that night have heard their laughs, seen their smiles, or held their hands. It’s been five years that the survivors have had to relive their trauma of that fateful night. Last Saturday marked five years since this deadly attack and it is a time we can reflect on the lives lost, those injured, the progress made since the attack, and what we all can do to fight for commonsense gun reform to make our country a safer place. This tragedy struck at the heart of the LGBTQ community, both in Orlando and around our country, happening right in the middle of Pride month. hile this is a somber anniversary that we must honor and remember the tragedy, it is also a time to reflect on what our community has accomplished as a result of this horrific event. hile we grieve for those we lost, today there is hope. Out of the tragedy, a movement was born in the LGBTQ community to fight for gun reform, led by groups such as the Pride Fund to nd Gun Violence, which was established within days of the shooting. It includes Pulse survivors, family members of those killed in the attack, and key stakeholders. orking at the state and federal level, this new generation of activists is mobilizing and advocating for change to honor those lost with action. Through political action, advocacy, and recruiting new activists to the gun reform fight, the Pride Fund, other groups, and the LGBTQ community as a whole are honoring the legacy of the Pulse victims through meaningful action. The mission of Pride Fund is year round, working daily to enact gun reform, elect gun safety champions at the state and federal level, and advocating for change all over the country. As we look back over the last five years there have been some significant accomplishments that reflect the hard work that has been done since the tragedy.

!"&8&9:;<&=>1&?@?=&8&ABCD;E<A<CFADG<HIBJ

First, prior to Pulse, gun reform was not one of the top priorities in the LGBTQ community. Immediately following the shooting, our community began to have conversations about this critical topic and learn about the current efforts underway to change our gun laws. I created Pride Fund to nd Gun Violence as an organization to spearhead our community’s efforts and harness the political power of the LGBTQ community to create change. hereas gun reform was not a top priority before, public polling has shown in the years since that gun reform is now a top priority for LGBTQ voters. Pride Fund has been involved in more than 125 political races around the country since our creation, and we have helped kick some of the worst epublicans out of o ce, replacing them with gun safety champions. Second, we have witnessed many of those personally impacted by the tragedy, the survivors, the family members and friends of those killed, and key stakeholders like the owner of Pulse, become national activists in this cause. Third, Democrats have seized on the issue and made it one of their top priorities in their campaigns and in elected o ce. The 2018 election was the first time gun reform was a key issue, not only on the campaign trail, but by voters. ith Democrats winning the House of epresentatives, bills started to finally pass to address gun reform, however the Senate stopped its movement. Now with Democrats controlling the House, Senate, and hite House, we are in the greatest position to enact change. President Biden, has announced a series of initial actions and subsequent items have taken place. Most recently, the ATF has issued a proposed rule to stop the proliferation of “ghost guns,” and in his budget request for next year, he has included a $2 2 million increase in funding for the DOJ and HHS to tackle gun violence. Fourth, in a significant move by Congress in recent days, the House and Senate have voted to designate a Pulse National Memorial site. Out of tragedy, there can be triumph, and the Pulse tragedy has certainly shown this to be true.

Looking at the fight for LGBTQ equality from inside the bubble of the nited States, it’s easy to get the impression that the movement essentially started at Stonewall, and that most of our progress is the result of work from our own homegrown activists. That’s obviously not the case though there have been plenty of American heroes that have done more than their fair share in the effort, the contributions of others who join the fight on the international front deserve recognition, too. “Hating Peter Tatchell,” available now on Netflix, is a great introduction to one of them. It’s a documentary from director Christopher Amos that chronicles the life and work of a tireless champion for LGBTQ rights and human rights in general whose six decades of campaigning have made him simultaneously one of the most lauded and loathed men in the world. He has shaken up the British establishment with his radical acts of civil disobedience, aggressively pushed for change in global attitudes about homosexuality, and stood up against tyrannical world leaders and he’s done it all from the front lines. Amos’ brisk but informative film takes us on a tour of Tatchell’s career, bolstered by plenty of archival footage much of which only exists because Tatchell saved the VHS tapes himself and given perspective through evocative interviews with the likes of activist Angela Mason, actor Stephen Fry, and Tatchell himself, who also engages in an ongoing conversation with actor and fellow LGBTQ activist Ian McKellen about what motivates his lifelong fight for equality. Along the way, we get insights into Tatchell’s personal life, in particular his relationship with his deeply religious mother. The film culminates with his riskiest crusade yet, the disruption of 2018’s FIFA orld Cup in Moscow to draw attention to the persecution of LGBTQ+ people in ussia and Chechnya. Tatchell, we’re happy to say, survived that journey, and is still fighting tirelessly through the Peter Tatchell Foundation, a small London-based human rights organization that also supports democracy, LGBTQ+ and human rights movements in countries like ussia, ganda, Iran and Pakistan. But busy as he is, he took time to join director Christopher Amos for a conversation with the Blade about the film. !"#$% Peter, a lot of hard-working activists often struggle with burnout.
