Things are getting hot in Los Cabos, and we’re not just talking about spiking summer temps. As the region continues to rebuild following the devastation of last year’s Hurricane Odile, those businesses that were most affected are reopening—bigger and better than ever—and new hotels, restaurants, and other attractions are announcing new Los Cabos openings.

Even as Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, and the Tourist Corridor connecting them have grown, crime rates have stayed largely down. México’s government has taken great measures to keep the area safe, and it clearly paid off: Los Cabos was selected to host the G-20 summit in July 2012.

to Cabo San Lucas more than 10 years ago. Katherine Bitoni of San Antonio, Texas, adds: “I have been traveling to Cabo for 30 years. It’s safe and always has been. I have taken my daughters and grandchildren with me. I feel safer in Cabo than I do in some areas of Los Angeles and San Diego.” Tourism is big business, and it makes sense the government would work to protect a region like Los Cabos. Additionally, it’s worth noting the high-profile, drug-related violence has been generally limited to the states of Sinaloa, Guerrero, and Chihuahua and near the borders in Baja Califor-

While much of México continues to battle issues—real and perceived— Los Cabos has remained a safe retreat for families, dignitaries, celebrities, and the people who live here 365 days a year. This has, in fact, long been a favorite destination, having served as a playground for Hollywood jet-setters: Bing Crosby, Desi Arnaz, and John Wayne were frequent visitors during the 1950s, and more recently Cindy Crawford and George Clooney have made homes here.
Los Cabos has blossomed into one of the most beautiful resort areas in México and continues to be one of the safest. Pictured, clockwise from top left: Cabo San Lucas Marina and harbor; Puerto Los Cabos in San José del Cabo.
“We have over 15,000 foreigners living in Baja California Sur,” says Marco Ehrenberg, Baja California Sur’s director of international relations. “Many of the rich and famous still choose Cabo as their number one destination. Don’t you think they’ve done their homework? Why do we have the best hotels and the highest number of private air travel in México for a tourist destination? Because Los Cabos is safe, fun, and friendly.” “México is a big, incredibly diverse country, so violence along the border does not have any effect on a vacation in Los Cabos,” adds Miroslava Bautista Sánchez, the Los Cabos secretary of tourism. “Thousands of flights, cruise lines, and private yachts choose Los Cabos as their travel destination.
Why? Because Los Cabos is a symbol of a peaceful place to visit and to live.”
hold someone in jail for up to a year before a case is even tried.
Quintana Roo Gov. Roberto Borge says the violence in México needs to be viewed with perspective: “México has 112 million citizens,” he is quoted as having said. “Are there more good Mexicans than bad? Yes. There are more than 2,500 municipalities in México, and the majority of violence is in 12 of them.” Just looking at homicide rates, it’s easy to see Cabo San Lucas is safer than most travel destinations in the world.
The local government created a tourism police force as a means to better serve English-speaking visitors to the area and whose focus is maintaining the decades-long safety of tourists and their families.
Local government continues to work to protect visitors and locals. Authorities, for example, do not tolerate excessive drinking and disorderly behavior. It is illegal to disturb the peace, act in a lewd or indecent way, litter, drive drunk, or make foul or insulting remarks to others. The penalties for drug possession and use are especially severe in Los Cabos: Authorities can

Talk of the Town Pitahayas Marks 20 Years The iconic Tourist Corridor restaurant Pitahayas celebrated its 20th anniversary on June 27 with a luxurious private event. Those in attendance included Mexican actors, producers, investors, and tourism representatives from Los Cabos. It was a very enjoyable party, where they also inaugurated Pitayitas Bar, the restaurant’s new bar where locals can enjoy a luxurious environment and international cocktails. For more information on Pitahayas, visit www.pitahayas.com.
In September 2014, Hurricane Odile devastated much of Los Cabos and caused the long-term closure of several hotels, including the extremely popular Hilton Los Cabos. That property reopened in July 2015 following a major, multimillion-dollar transformation. “A beloved seaside retreat for more than a decade, we are proud to reopen our doors with a far superior product and the exceptional service standards our guests know and love,” said Tim Booth, the resort’s general manager. There are new restaurants, 65 new club-level suites, and a 7,000-square-foot spa and salon, among other new improvements. Visit www.hiltonloscabos.com for more information.
Tres Toños Offers Free Tequila Tours The spirit of México—also known as tequila—is traditionally a product of Jalisco, a state rather far from Los Cabos, Baja California Sur. But guests here can discover the different types of tequila—and their many nuances—as well as its process and history during a fun, free tour offered by Tres Toños. And, of course, no tequila tour is complete without a tasting…or two. To learn more, go to www.loscabos guide.com/tequilatourlostrestonos. 14

Talk of the Town Pancho’s Offers Tequila Course There’s one restaurant all visiting tequila connoisseurs include on their Los Cabos itineraries: Pancho’s Restaurant & Tequila Bar. The veteran downtown Cabo San Lucas restaurant—really, it’s an institution at this point—is home to a massive collection of tequilas and mezcals, and it’s where folks are invited to take a 45-minute introductory course to the mythology, history, customs, and making of mezcal and tequila. It also includes four “caballitos” (generous shots) of tequilas as well as a “jarrito” of mezcal— all selections from the restaurant’s collection of more than 575 tequilas and some 30-plus mezcals. More information is available at www.panchos.com.
The long-awaited Hospital H+ held its grand opening in April. The new facility is located midway between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. At present, the facility contains 16 spacious hospital rooms and 24 beds in what could be described as a luxury resort. The entire facility is upscale: from the serene and clean blue and white color scheme, tasteful art adorning the hallways, to the state-of-the art equipment. Recovery rooms have built-in televisions, a fold-out sofa for family members staying overnight, plus a recliner chair. Emergency call devices are located strategically in the bathrooms that also have fold-down seated platforms and handrails. Most rooms have an ocean view. For more information, visit www.hmasloscabos.mx.

La Purísima Spa, the on-site spa at Ventanas Residences, uses only all-natural products.
Did you spend a bit longer than intended tanning on the beach? Perhaps you feel dehydrated or need a little plumping after endless weeks of work. To get your feel-good hormones up and running for the summer, take a breather and visit one of the many professional spas in Los Cabos. Most spas offer treatments inspired by nature and incorporate items ranging from milk and honey to the fruits of summer. Take, for example, the summer services offered by La Purísima Salon & Spa (624-131-5368 or www.ventanasresidences .com). The on-site spa at Ventanas Residences uses only all-natural products. Each treatment starts with a therapeutic foot massage, which is followed by any number of services. Massage options include hot stone, deep tissue or sport, or one specifically for tired legs. For a real treat, add on a scalp massage. Signature services include a loofa salt glow and deep-cleansing facial, as well as services for men such as a gentleman’s facial. While you’re at it, add an anti-aging eye treatment. This full-service salon is ready with summer seasonal specials not only for men and women but also for the kiddies; there’s a children’s menu that includes a mini manicure and pedicure using grapes and lemon extracts. How fun would it be for the little one to experience a face mask? There’s also a “Me & Mommy Massage” for children 4 to 12 years of age. La Purísima has created an atmosphere that appeals to all the senses and soothes the weary: soft music, bubbling water, and flickering candles. La Purísima is a full-service
spa offering a full range of services, the most popular being deep-tissue massages, body wraps, body scrubs, facial care, waxing, and salon services for hair, manicures and pedicures. All products and equipment are top-notch, including the pedicure spa chairs with built-in massage and footbath. La Purísima also performs special anti-cellulite treatments, as well as reducing and firming treatments, and waxing. Why not take advantage of pampering yourself? The cost is quite reasonable, which makes it possible to spend an entire morning or afternoon indulging. Embrace the scents of summer at Tesoro Hotel’s Aura Spa (173-9300, ext. 1990), which uses refreshing coconut, lime, mint, and vanilla in its manicures and pedicures. All salon services are offered, including bridal makeup and a makeup party for teens. If you’ve heard of, but never participated in, a temezcal, this is your chance to see what this pre-Hispanic steam bath is all about. This native health ritual encompasses the four elements of water, fire, wind and water using aromatic and medicinal herbs. You can enjoy the traditional Mexican hacienda-style of indulgence at the Cactus Spa (624-145-8000, ext. 4080) located within the Sheraton Hacienda del Mar resort. Fresh fruit, glowing candles, aromatic scents, and body wraps with tropical fruits such as papaya, mango, and kiwi will having you feeling good, smelling good, and good to go. Reserve a couple’s room to enjoy shared massages and facials. Take advantage of the sauna, steam rooms, and hot tub in the outdoor relaxation area.
Your body deserves some of the treatments featured at The Spa at the Marina Fiesta Hotel (www.marina fiestaresort.com), including a green coffee body wrap, a floral ritual, or chocolate massage. Special packages are available with room and spa as well as spa packages with anti-stress massages and anti-aging facials. For that special night-on the-town occasion, let the magic begin with a new hairdo and makeup, complete with mani and pedi. The spa at the Hilton Hotel (www .hiltonloscabos.com) was created to offer its guests a spiritual escape from their every increasingly lives. Eforea is the name, Spanish for euphoria, which translated further means ecstasy, joy, and jubilation, all ways to describe the unique spa concept for global travelers. Signature treatments include a rosemary citron sea salt scrub, a lemon verbena body treatment and a Blues Be Gone massage. The full service salon includes waxing, nail and hair care, lash applica-

Stay moisturized: Moisturizer is important. Aloe vera is an organic moisturizer. It’s not only the secret to easing sunburns but it will reduce puffiness. Wear a hat: There’s something very alluring about a floppy sun hat, and it’s a great way to protect your face from the sun’s rays. Stay covered: Wear lighter colored clothing of natural fabrics that breathe (think: cotton, linen and silk). Banish bad hair: The sun can also do a number on your, so keep it conditioned with coconut oil. Skip heavy makeup: Less is more, especially when time outside could result in it melting off. Face a window and use natural sunlight to apply makeup. Maintain that dewy glow: Mix a pea-sized amount of moisturizer with an equal amount of liquid foundation. Dab a cream blush on cheeks and moisturizing balm on lips. Go waterproof: Use longwearing waterproof liquid eyeliner. Finish with a light coat of waterproof mascara. Say no to tanning: You’ll be thankful in years to come. Shield your skin: Wear a base lotion containing sunscreen; touch up during the day. Drink lots of water: Infuse with lemon or fruit. Eat watermelon and juicy fruits. Y

Forget the kennel. Cape cities Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, and the connecting Tourist Corridor offer abundant accommodations and amenities for canine visitors, from soothing pet massages to long walks on some of the world’s most beautiful beaches. Luxury property Las Ventanas al Paraíso (www.rosewoodhotels.com /en/las-ventanas-los-cabos/) is considered the resort of choice for discerning four-legged guests. Fido will feel right at home—either en suite or poolside—in his specially designed pet cabana, and he can overcome any lingering jetlag with a stress-relieving neck massage at the acclaimed on-site spa. Los Cabos is not only a popular resort destination for romantic getaways and world-class fishing and golf excursions, but it’s also a wonderful spot for leisurely vacations with friends and family. And who fits both categories better than man’s best friend: the family dog?
You don’t have to leave Fido behind when planning your next vacation.
Los Cabos is much more dog friendly—and kid friendly—than you may have thought.
While the dog is resting and rehydrating, the rest of the family can sip tropical cocktails on a swing at the beachfront bar, sample the restaurant’s signature canoa (canoe) featuring fresh local seafood, or simply soak up the incredible Land’s End views. For tail-wagging nightlife, stop by on Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. That’s when Baja Cantina hosts its weekly Fiesta Mexicana with mariachis, margaritas, fireworks, and folkloric dancing. Besides Médano Beach, the best place for pets to see and be seen in Cabo San Lucas is on the boardwalk, the expansive seaside promenade that skirts the city’s marina. Fido and friends can do a little window-shopping while basking in the fresh tropical breezes, with time to relax afterwards at benchmark, dog-friendly neighborhood eateries like Baja Cantina Marina (www.bajacantinamarina .com) and Solomon’s Landing (www .solomonslandingcabo.com). Perhaps that’s why the popular dockside hangout has been headquarters for the world’s richest fishing tournament—Bisbee’s Black and Blue—for more than 20 years. Solomon’s Landing, meanwhile, provides a prime people watching post as well as a host of first-rate menu options courtesy of celebrated local chef Brian Solomon. Start your day in paradise with the waffle of your dreams, topped with mixed berries compote, chocolate chips, real whipping cream, and sweet Canadian maple syrup. Then progress to heart-healthy salads, deli-style sandwiches, prime cuts of steak, and fresh local seafood specialties. There’s even an on-site sushi bar with sashimi, sake, and a selection of Japanese beers. The service at each of these restaurants is exceptional, of course, both for twoand four-legged guests. Your home is, after all, your refuge, and you want your surroundings to feel like you. Design happens, but not without a plan. Whether your scheme is formal, dramatic, comfy, or made for entertaining, there is a world of ideas just waiting for you. And you’ll know it when you see it. You may be in the market for some unique furnishings—or even design services. Los Cabos shops can accommodate all your home ideas. If you are traveling to Los Cabos and want to take back some pieces to liven up your house, bring photos, measurements, and paint chips with you. Maybe you want to fill a niche with a special piece of sculpture or add to your collection of memorabilia of foreign travel: perhaps a wall of masks from different countries, dolls, or framed prints. But, if you see a hand-carved, gold-leaf mirror frame you like in the showroom or in a photograph, you may want to consider a similar design for a king-size headboard or other unique piece. Beautiful hand-stitched pillow coverings and other accessories are also available. A home is more than a house. It’s an extension of you, of your family. And decorating it requires more than a single trip to a big box store. If you have just moved into your Los Cabos dream home and want to appoint it with a few accessories, there are many local options. Remember: Your home decor should reflect your style, personality, and the way you live, work, and relax.
I’ve seen in a while is to have a set of talavera dishware custom designed with your family name inscribed on the back. That way, you can pass it down to future generations. Get them on canvas, on metal, or even as fun hand-painted alebrije figurines from Oaxaca. If time permits in your vacation schedule, unleash your inner artist at a paint party. Pez Gordo staffers like to say the gallery puts the “art in pARTy.” A new addition to the Shoppes at Palmilla is Audio High (www.audiohigh.com), originally from Los Angeles. It is dedicated to sound systems, cinemas, and home automation. For the uninitiated, home automation means being able to control almost everything at your house from your smart phone. For example, you’re at the office and want to turn your house’s air-conditioning on or want to check the surveillance cameras on the patio to see the weather. Whatever you can think of, this company can develop the software and make it happen. When I first moved to Los Cabos in 1995, finding furniture, accessories and interior design services was not easy. But I was lucky enough to happen upon three: DecorAmerica Interiors (www.decoramericainteriors.com) who has been in business in Cabo San Lucas since 1986 offering turn-key interior design; El Callejón (624-143-1139) opened in 1991 and specializes in large projects, remodeling and everything in between to freshen up with fabrics, rugs, lamps, pillows, etc.; and Casa Paulina (www.casapaulina.com), a San José del Cabo fixture since 1989 that offers full-design integration from floors, iron work, texture, and tile. Since then, other great establishments have opened up. Landgrave Furniture & Patio Store (www.landgravecabo.com) is located on the Tourist Corridor and features such name brands as Tommy Bahama, Stanley, Lexington, and La-Z-Boy from the United States as well as cast-aluminum, powder-coated patio furniture from México. Another is The Home Store (624173-0203), which offers a blend of classic and rustic pieces, as well as traditional Mexican and “beach chic” looks. Also consider Casa Bonita (624-144-1500), Diaz de Luna (www.diazdeluna.com), Rattan Peninsula from Guadalajara (624-1436373), and Treasures (624-144-6411). And, of course, I can’t forget the resale shops: Tienda 17 (624-105-2323) now has two locations in San José del Cabo, and Artesanos (km 2.5 on Tourist Corridor) in Cabo San Lucas is an amazing source for accessories from México—especially pewter—and also items from Bali. If only some of these great resources had been here back then. But I can now plan on redecorating. See, it never stops. Y Los Cabos Magazine | Summer 2015

The Los Cabos real estate market is changing fast, transitioning from a buyer’s market to one favoring sellers; pick up properties like this Sendero San José home before prices go up.
Hot Buys in Your Budget Los Cabos’ days as a buyers market are limited. The time to buy is now By Carol S. Billups
Ask any real estate agent or broker, and she will tell you the action is at the extremes of the spectrum: The very high-end projects—which really weren’t that impacted by the recession—and the very affordable properties are seeing quite a bit of activity. In fact, the more affordable properties on the Cabo San Lucas side of the Tourist Corridor (the land that separates San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas) are becoming harder to find, and their prices rose 18 percent in the 34

first half of 2015. That came after an 18 percent increase in 2014 over the previous year. The star in this category is Cabo del Mar Ecopark from Portus Group, the same developer behind the very successful Ventanas projects and Soleado in San José. Cabo del Mar offers all of the amenities that are expected of a Portus development as well as a few new additions. The Ecopark name signifies that this development is environmentally responsible, with each house outfitted with solar panels, park spaces, and extra attention to native plants. There will be a large clubhouse with restaurants, spa, minimart, gym, and pools, and there is a private bilingual school already in session. Designed for families and active retirees, Cabo del Mar Ecopark offers two floor plans, each with an optional

The party’s over, people. Well, it’s at least winding down. We’ve enjoyed five years of the strongest buyer’s market anyone can remember. That’s quickly changing. There’s no more waiting on the sidelines, waiting to see how far the market will drop. You’d better act quickly or you’re likely to miss out completely.
expansion package. Prices here start in the low $200,000s U.S., and the developer is offering financing. At the high-end there is no shortage of new projects under way: Chileno Bay, VieVage at Chileno, Mar Adentro, and Soleado in San José del Cabo, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Now that development is back under way, it appears most projects are aimed at the $2 million U.S. and above demographic. Elite real estate is nothing new in Los Cabos, home to such established prestigious communities as El Dorado, Punta Ballena, Cabo del Sol, Palmilla, Diamante, and others. Most of the high-end communities boast golf courses as well as other amenities. Additionally, most offer both developer-built properties and custom estate lots. For example, at Querencia both home sites and villas surround the famed Tom Fazio–designed private golf course. For those who wish to avoid the building process, there are the Club Villas, a collection of single-family homes located steps away from Querencia’s Club Village. Ranging in size from approximately 3,200 to 5,000 square feet of air-conditioned space, the Club Villas start at about $2 million U.S. The developer also offers the Las Verandas condominium residences, starting at just over $1 million U.S. And for those who want a custom home, building lots are available ranging from about $400,000 U.S. to $1.5 million U.S. For the rest of us in the middle, Pueblo Campestre within the master-planned community of Club Campestre in San José del Cabo at the intersection of the airport toll road and México Route 1 is an excellent option. These fairway and ocean view homes are currently under construction, and buyers still have time to help select interior finishes. With prices starting at about $375,000 U.S., the homes have three bedrooms of which two are master suites. All include memberships in the Campestre Beach Club as well as a golf membership, terraces, and high-end finishes. Portus Group is a leader when it comes to more affordable real estate developments, like Ventanas Residences.
Cabo del Mar Ecopark comes from the Portus Group, the same developer behind the very popular Ventanas Residences.
Casa Miramar, located within Cabo del Sol, offers 6,100 square feet of custom space, with three master suites, a guest bedroom, and an outdoor kitchen. It overlooks the Sea of Cortés and a golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus.

Fewer and farther between than in the very recent past, there are, believe it or not, still a few bargains to be had. Most of the remaining recession-priced properties are resales by individuals, and your best option for finding them is working with an agent who is part of our multiple-listing service (MLS-BCS). Just as an example, it was noted that the developer’s lot inventory at Querencia started at about $400,000 U.S. But at press time, there was a very large resale lot (more than one acre) in the same community with an asking price of $250,000 U.S. Such examples are becoming rarer but can be found in most budgets in many parts of Los Cabos; your MLS-BCS agent can guide you to the best option in today’s changing market. Welcome to Los Cabos in the summer. It’s gorgeous. It’s sunny. And it’s pretty darn hot. Daytime highs hover in the mid-90s June through September, and we sometimes even hit triple digits. With that in mind, we’ve come up with a list of 40 cool ways you can beat the heat while discovering more about Los Cabos. (A special thank-you goes out to all those social media followers who shared tips on Facebook and Twitter.) Whether you’re 2 or 20, on a budget or ready to splurge, we guarantee you’ll find something on this list that fits your fancy. So, relax, grab a margarita, load up on the sunscreen, and enjoy our Los Cabos Magazine guide to staying cool. Hit the shops at Puerto Paraíso (www.puertoparaiso .mx), an indoor mall on the Cabo San Lucas Marina. You’ll love the stores—a blend of familiar brands and only-in-México items—as well as the air-conditioning.

Don’t get me wrong. I love Los Cabos. But there’s nothing like a weekend away in La Paz. The capital of Baja California Sur is also home to some of the state’s best food, most beautiful scenery, and biggest attractions (we’re talking whale sharks).
Friday
5 p.m. The recently renovated Mariscos El Molinito (www.mariscoselmolinito .com.mx) is the premier fresh shrimp restaurant in the Southern Baja. It serves tasty ceviche tacos, shrimp cocktails, fresh oysters, and fish served a variety of ways. Guests are even welcome to order a newly caught fish that can feed up to seven. Another excellent dinner option is Bandidos Grill (612128-8338), located a few blocks north of the malecón. The alfresco barbecue spot serves the best burgers in La Paz 48

as well as tasty onion rings, jalapeño poppers, chicken strips, and teriyaki sandwiches. Everything’s reasonably priced and, even cooler, prepared under the hood of an old truck turned grill. Insider tip: The shrimp fettuccine made with the owner’s mother’s secret Alfredo sauce is awesome. 10 p.m. The night continues at Tailhunter (www.tailhunter.mx), Jonathan Roldan’s three-story restaurant and bar with incredible views of the sea. There’s live music on the weekends, and, come football season, this is a favorite hangout among Duck fans who flock here to watch games on the nine flat-

7 a.m. You can’t visit La Paz without also venturing out to Espíritu Santo, a UNESCO World Heritage site a short boat ride away from La Paz. You’ll see whales, dolphins, sea lions, and sea turtles. You can swim, and snorkel, too. Tour schedules vary, but you’ll want to rise early to get ready for a day of onand in-the-water adventure. Expeditions (www.caboexpeditions.com.mx.) Contact them directly to see where you can start the trip, whether from Cabo San Lucas or La Paz. The sights are incredible, and you’ll also be well fed to keep up your energy for all the fun. 7 p.m. The outdoor courtyard dining area at Las Tres Virgenes (612-123-2226) is considered one of the best in La Paz. Salads are prepared tableside and served with excellent housemade sauce. There’s a lot to recommend, including the braised pork shank, New York steaks, chicken rolls, smoky, mesquite-grilled octopus, grilled tuna, and yellowtail tacos. There’s an excellent selection of Baja California wines—expensive but worth it. The location is absolutely lovely, and the atmosphere magical. 10 p.m. For a nightcap, head to Apostolis (www.restaurantapostolis .com). Local musicians often play on its courtyard, a cozy, romantic setting for such tasty starter seafood servings as mussels in white wine, calamari, and crab.

10 a.m. I’m a late riser and enjoy nothing better than a laid-back, mid-morning breakfast at Kiwi Restaurant (612-123-3282), an unassuming gem right on the malecón. Relax under palm trees as waves break just below and you nosh on Mexican- or American-style breakfasts and coffee.

Looking for something easier to take on the go? The Bagel Shop (612-125-5878) is the most wonderful place for, you guessed it, freshly baked bagels. borhood vibe. Enjoy a casual breakfast or get the bagels to go before you hit the road. Noon Before you leave, you ought to spend a little of the afternoon at Balandra, a beach roughly 20 minutes south of La Paz. The warm seawater never reaches higher than an adult’s waist, and you can walk the 200–300 yards from one end of the beach to the opposite side without ever having the water reach higher than your chest. The calm, clear water is perfectly suited for children to play and swim, and there is a small taco truck nearby for snacks and water. Also good: There’s plenty of parking, but the beach does get crowded on Sundays. So the earlier you come, the better.
Where to Stay
There are several great places to stay in La Paz, but our favorites include El Moro Hotel (612-122-4084), which is located at the southern end of the malecón. Enjoy free Wi-Fi, a swimming pool, a furnished terrace, and hot tub. El Moro’s on-site Café Gourmet has solid American-style food, and you’re just a short walk from the downtown restaurant scene. Hotel Perla (612-122-0821) is conveniently situated right in the heart of downtown. It offers an outdoor pool, sun terrace, and Wi-Fi in every room. The landmark hotel also has free parking on-site.

The old-fashioned Baja Bed and Breakfast (www.bajabed andbreakfast.com/wp) is just two blocks from the malecón. Los Cabos averages more than 350 days of sunshine per year, with the highest temperatures typically occurring during late summer and early fall. But don’t fear the heat. Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo offer a bevy of chill bars, shaded or air-conditioned oases whose coolness quotient isn’t simply a function of their thermostat readings but also their laid-back atmospheres and impressive array of umbrella-garnished tropical cocktails and ice-cold cervezas. So, here’s our list of the five chillest bars in Los Cabos: Sunset da Mona Lisa didn’t need any new features to reign as one of Los Cabos’ most enduring landmarks. The Tourist Corridor restaurant is honored annually as one of the most romantic dining experiences in the world—it was rated one of the five coolest restaurants in the world by the New York Times—with tables perched cliff-side just above the Sea of Cortés and magnificent views of the sun as it explodes nightly in a sunset burst of color beyond Land’s End. But the Italian- and seafood-themed eatery has nonetheless upped its wow factor, thanks to the recent addition of the Taittinger Terrace (www.sunsetmonalisa.com/t-terrace). pits. Pitahayas is known for one of the most beautiful palapas in all Los Cabos with an unobstructed view of the Sea of Cortés. Guests can now enjoy a more casual environment, but with the same amenities of romance, candlelight, and fabulous sunset and moonrise views. Premium labels are the signature for the new addition as are well-crafted concoctions of the mixologist. Inventive martinis and mojitos beckon one to try fruit inspired potions such as Pink Mojito made with cranberry juice or Mint Breeze martini with mint leaves, lemongrass, ginger, and agave syrup. The bar offers a limited appetizer menu that will hold until dinnertime. Try the yellow fin tuna cone with wasabi mayo or beef tacos on a bed of sweet potato puree with Asian guacamole. Sunset da Mona Lisa isn’t the only Los Cabos restaurant with a chic Champagne lounge. The first such establishment to open in Los Cabos was actually Nick-San Palmilla’s Garden (www.nicksangarden.com), an offshoot of Nick-San’s acclaimed sushi location at upscale shopping center Las Tiendas de Palmilla (the Shoppes at Palmilla). The elegant terrace and garden lounge offers a cork popping celebration of Champagne and cocktails, as well as charming company, and of course gorgeous views of Palmilla Bay. There is also, naturally, menu access to the custom sushi creations pioneered by Angel Carbajal and Masayuki Nikura: The two chefs’ fusion of Japanese cuisine with traditional Mexican ingredients revolutionized the local dining scene, and it has subsequently led to additional restaurants on mainland México. Nick-San Garden hosts live jazz and world music on Tuesday evenings 7:30 p.m.–10:30 p.m., and it is now much in demand as a wedding and special events venue. Barefoot fine dining is something of a local specialty, and nobody does it better than Baja Cantina Beach (www.bajacantinabeachclub.com). Cabo Wabo Cantina (www.cabowabocantina.com/cabo) has been the epitome of Cabo style cool for 25 years, ever since Sammy Hagar and his bandmates in Van Halen opened the place back in 1990. In fact, Cabo Wabo Cantina’s rock ‘n’ roll attitude and good-time, party-hearty atmosphere helped put Cabo San Lucas on the map as a resort destination. The best time to visit the festive day and nightclub is in October, when Sammy celebrates his birthday with a series of concerts featuring an all-star lineup of contemporary rock and country stars. But comfort food specials, ice-cold cocktails, and hard-driving music are on tap year round. For maximum chill factor, start with an order of Waboritas. The world-famous house spin on the traditional margarita features a tasty mixture of tequila, Cointreau, Grand Marnier and lime juice, and is a sure fire way to counteract the tropical summer heat. Y

The popular pit stop is located on the Los Cabos area’s largest and most popular beach, Playa El Médano. In with the New At Romeo & Julieta, chef Matias Forte marries traditions new and old By Sandra A. Berry
66
Los Cabos Magazine | Summer 2015
It is early afternoon, and the restaurant’s quiet. But that’s not to say there isn’t any activity: The waitstaff bustles about, setting tables with white linens, tinkling glassware, and freshly polished flatware. They want the restaurant’s dining rooms to sparkle for the evening crowd. I am at Romeo & Julieta to meet with chef Matias Forte to discuss recent—and ongoing—changes at the restaurant, from new private dining rooms to an ever-evolving menu.
Opposite Page: Francisco Estrada. This Page: Arlen Rodriguez
Forte greets me with an engaging smile and a kiss on both cheeks, as is tradition in Italy. He is wearing a white chef’s jacket, but he says he has them in several colors. Though it has been nearly 30 years since Romeo & Julieta opened, Forte is the reason for its continued success. He arrived in 2010, bringing with him an appreciation for classic Italian cooking and a thirst for something new. “Food is a tradition in Italy, dating back to the Roman days,” explains the Italian-born chef. “Keeping the history is very important to the Italian family, and food gives great pleasure. Italians are attached to their food and wine heritage. This may be common in the rest of world but in Italy it has a deeper significance. Sitting around the dining table as a family is a tradition. When the stomach is full, everyone feels happy,” he adds. “I am interested in keeping the traditions alive, while at the same time introducing innovative ideas. The menu is not complicated, and there is something for everyone. My goal is to bring the flavor, experience, memories, and pleasure of my childhood to the tables of Romeo & Julieta while also incorporating the fresh, locally sourced—and, often organic—ingredients available in Baja California Sur. I am constantly endeavoring to raise the quality levels in food, presentation, and taste.” Not only has Forte upped the ante on fresh, healthy ingredients, but he has also reinforced Romeo & Julieta’s reputation as one of the most romantic restaurants in Cabo San Lucas. How

can one not feel the romance in such a beautiful space? The decor is lovely, from the tableware to the furniture: natural-hewn wooden tables for family-style dining and comfy chairs with cushions (some upholstered); Forte had a hand in the decision-making on
all of these elements in order to convey a more Italian atmosphere. Live plants, candlelight, stone and brick walls, red tile roof overhead, columns, and a little balcony are reminiscent of the restaurant’s namesake and add to the romantic atmosphere.

Forte smiles as he shares stories about the many marriage proposals that have happened here. He is sometimes asked to place an engagement ring in a glass of prosecco or place a ring atop a tiramisu at the end of the meal for dessert. Saturdays are synonymous with date night, and Forte has created a special Saturday night–only wine list that finds the perfect intersection of quality and affordability. In Italy, wine is like water; it is on the table at almost every meal. “The taste on the palate of the wine and the food brings pleasure,” says Forte lifting his fingers from a kiss on his lips. While Forte enjoys being a part of these special moments, he also runs 68
a tight ship. We often wonder what the kitchen looks like in a restaurant; whether it is clean, whether they are conducting everything according to some mandatory inspection. Forte works under a European set of controls, which are meant to ensure a high level of food safety with no margin of error. His 28-member team has adapted to this set of guidelines. Touring the Romeo & Julieta kitchen, I get a good idea of what it takes to bring a dinner order to the table. Everything in the stainless steel galley is spotless. There are five stations for various preparations by the kitchen staff of 10 to conduct their specific role, be it steak, fish, poultry, pasta, pizza, or pastry.
Los Cabos Magazine | Summer 2015
There is a cold room for making pasta from a special machine and other similar preparations. The coldest room is for garbage (no explanation needed), and it’s kept very clean. A high percentage of products are imported from Italy and stored neatly in a pantry or walk-in cooler. Forte’s attention to detail ensures consistent culinary excellence. The menu is seasonal, depending on what is available. Just as in Italy, the food in the mountains is different from what is found by the seashore. Forte owns a cookbook with more than 5,000 Italian recipes from renowned chefs from different regions in Italy; he reviews it periodically and incorporates items into his seasonal menus.
Francisco Estrada
The charming alfresco dining space at Romeo & Julieta transports guests to Italy, chef Fortés homeland. It is a favorite of locals and visitors to Los Cabos.
“New fads will come and go, but the original traditional Italian food will never change,” he says.

Clockwise from top left: The Gamberoni Capuleto is a favorite dish of plump shrimp with garlic, olive oil, and parsley that’s served with potato salad and a spring mixed salad; the Tagliata di Manzo features a juicy rump steak that’s served with a spring mixed salad, shaved Parmesan, and cherry tomatoes; the Pollo al Limoncello puts a tangy twist on the traditional chicken breast, here served in an orange-limoncello sauce with sides of rosemary potatoes and grilled vegetables.
Among the changes Forte and I discuss is a new focus on events at Romeo & Julieta. The restaurant has a new entrance facing Marina Boulevard as well as an extended, open patio and several private rooms, which are perfect for private parties, and which Forte was instrumental in introducing. Romeo & Julieta is a favorite of dignitaries, and they may now use the old entrance for more privacy. The renovated restaurant space is ideal for rehearsal dinners, birthdays, weddings, and posadas during December; different menus allow for food and drink choices, depending on price, which can be simple or elaborate. The various private dining rooms can accommodate from 10 to 80, or if the occasion warrants, the restaurant will close for a large event of 150 or more. In fact, Forte and his bride had their wedding ceremony in one of the private dining rooms.
Romeo & Julieta has been an institution in Cabo San Lucas for many years; it is a true icon of Italian cuisine. It gives people a place to go, to get out of the hotels, to take a date, and because of its welcoming atmosphere and successful merging tradition with innovation, Romeo & Julieta will always be a place to go. Forte bids me arrivederci again with a buss on each cheek with a reminder to return soon for dinner. Who cannot love those Italian traditions? Y Los Cabos Magazine | Summer 2015

Alcaravea Gourmet Charming, intimate, and thoroughly Mediterranean: Chef-owner Enrique Diaz’s Alcaravea Gourmet is a gem in the heart of Cabo San Lucas. What started as a tiny spot grew such a huge following that it has since expanded. Though still small, it now boasts surreal paintings, a wood-beamed ceiling, and bistro tables topped with freshly cut flowers. The menu has a definite Mediterranean bent, but you’ll nevertheless want to start with the French-influenced Champiñones a la Provenzal starter (mushrooms stuffed with dried tomatoes, Parmesan, olives, artichoke hearts, and a touch of béchamel sauce). Entrées include salad and pasta courses, so you can enjoy a Caprese or carbonara before digging into the catch of the day “a la Siciliana” in a lemon sauce with tapenade, shallots, and roasted eggplant or the Filete Mignon a la Marzala, topped with mushroom and marsala sauce. In addition to dinner, Alcaravea Gourmet offers one of the best lunch specials in Los Cabos: soup or salad, an entrée with pasta or veggies, as well as a dessert and drink, all for $10 U.S. The specials menu changes daily and is available from noon until 4:30 p.m. Avenida 16 de Septiembre and Ignacio Zaragoza, Cabo San Lucas, (624) 143-3730, www .alcaraveagourmet.com. On a hot summer night, there’s nothing like retreating to the Cabo San Lucas Marina for cold drinks and a relaxing meal as breeze dances its way off of the Sea of Cortés. Rocker Sammy Hagar helped put Cabo San Lucas on the map when he opened his now-iconic Cabo Wabo nightclub way back when. Though best known for its hopping tequila and rocking bar, Cabo Wabo’s upstairs kitchen also serves outstanding dishes for lunch and dinner that are worthy of any upscale restaurant. Of course, you have to start with a drink: You can’t go wrong with the world-famous Waborita (owner Sammy Hagar’s take on a margarita) or the I Can’t Drive 55 (named for one of his songs and made with a blend of five fruit beverages and five white liquors) paired with the vampiros starter: grilled corn tortillas topped with refried black beans, Oaxaca cheese, and grilled beef fillet bits. We love the tortilla soup followed by the cilantro shrimp (grilled jumbo shrimp glazed with cilantro honey) or the chipotle rib eye. For a delicious dessert, choose from a chocolate-and-caramel tart, lemon tart with fresh fruit, bread pudding, and crème brûlée. Kids can enjoy fish or chicken fingers and fries. Yes, families are welcome in the dining room.

DINING El Meson The Hilton Hotel Los Cabos was made over after Hurricane Odile hit Los Cabos last September. El Meson reopened in July, and and it’s with renewed energy that its staff serves surprising dishes and a bountiful menu for breakfast and dinner. On our dinner visit, we were greeted cordially and immediately shown a display of iced local seafood—the specialty of the house—consisting of lobster, sea bass, red snapper, parrot fish, shrimp, scallops, and chocolate clams (a regional delicacy). For starters, we opted to try two ceviche dishes: “Coco” (made with a selection of seafood, coconut milk, cilantro, habanero, and mango, then served with plantain chips) and Vuelve a la Vida (a combination of seafood in a pico de gallo and avocado sauce), both outstanding. Feeling adventurous, we tried sopecitos, one with slow-roasted pork, the other with chicken and chipotle adobo; we were not disappointed. For our entrée, we ordered a whole grilled red snapper with a chile lime butter sauce, green papaya salad, and yuca root with garlic. Chef Christian Penaloso offers locally sourced seafood and fresh organic produce. At the suggestion of our server, we enjoyed a delightful Mexican red wine blend called Piccolo, from the Guadalupe Valley near Ensenada. We saved a little room for a crème brûlée with a sugar topping that was set alight at the table as well as Baja Lava, a decadent chocolate ball with mole ice cream on the side. Strolling mariachi musicians entertain diners who sit alfresco and look out at the infinity pool and the Sea of Cortés beyond. set you back only $4 U.S., and you get a mix of tuna, salmon, shrimp, and octopus. The $10 U.S. variety of sushi rolls are enough to share, as is the teppanyaki with mushrooms, peppers, broccoli, squash, and an option of beef, chicken, shrimp, or a mixture of choices. Fried rice makes a nice accompaniment with a choice of chicken, shrimp, beef, or mixed. You know the fish is fresh since the restaurant owner’s Sindicate Sportfishing fleet brings in the catch daily. Don’t stop until you try the tempura ice cream or the banana tempura with chocolate or strawberries and a dollop of ice cream. Of course, the restaurant offers a variety of main dishes, including Mexican fare along with fresh seafood. For party lovers, the beverages will have you reeling: margaritas with fresh pineapple and cilantro or order the Kamikaze Special of five shots for $10 U.S. Several TVs within the restaurant proper will keep you glued to your favorite televised sporting event. The setting is lovely, and the enormous wine-themed painting from celebrated local artist Yandi Monardo dazzles. Freshly made breads and pastas as well as generously filled glasses of Chianti transport guests to Italy. And then there’s the menu, which was built on beloved family recipes. Antipasti and appetizers like the Tocho Morocho de la casa—the chef’s choice of five signature tapas—are served family style in the center of the table. Entrée highlights like piquant Piccatine de Pollo (sautéed chicken breast with lime and parsley) and brochetas de camarón (grilled shrimp with zucchini and cherry tomatoes) are preceded by complimentary helpings of fresh focaccia. Jack’s Bar & Grill It takes only one visit to the pirate-themed Jack’s Bar & Grill on the Cabo San Lucas Marina for many a patron to declare: “It’s a pirate’s life for me!” The comfort food mecca and freebooting stronghold is part of the Marina Golden Zone, and it’s awash in nautical memorabilia and piratical accents. Pirates aren’t pretentious, of course, so the breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus stick to popular Mexican and American dishes. Try the Caesar salad with chicken or the Jack’s Burger topped with bacon, cheese, and caramelized onions. After the sun clears the yardarm, go with the threecheese spaghetti, the arrachera Angus, or the Pollo Caribe. La Panga Antigua Restaurant & Bar There is no shortage of Old World charm at La Panga Antigua, a San José del Cabo restaurant that transports guests to another time and place. Whenever we visit Nick-San at its original downtown Cabo San Lucas location, we opt for the sushi bar; this time was no different. On this occasion, we started with Japanese beer and a tasty tuna tartar made with chives and horseradish; the freshness and tastiness of this tartar were amazing. We then proceeded to some classic Nick-San dishes—the kind we love and enjoy every time we’re here. Those include the must-have tuna tostadas, sashimi serranito, and Kushiage roll. We also had some of the brand-new creations from owners and chefs Angel Carbajal and Masayuki Niikura. Among the ones we tried were the Niikura sashimi (a fresh fish served with capers) and bubu arare; both are strong and well-balanced dishes. We continued with the truffle sashimi, the grilled salmon served with white rice perfumed to truffle, and to finish the famous avocado special roll, which is a delicate avocado roll stuffed with eel that is delicately minced to make it especially soft. It is at the same time salty and sweet, a perfect way to end the dinner. As on prior visits, we had our dinner accompanied by the red house wine, a French merlot that was just amazing with the selections of dishes. I highly recommend you visit Nick-San Cabo and let yourself be surprised by the new dishes on the menu; you won’t be disappointed. Romeo & Julieta It’s always a treat to visit this authentic Italian restaurant, but that’s especially true when Italian-born chef Matias Forte introduces new items to the menu. A recent addition is similar to that favorite Caprese salad. Called burrata pugliese, it is made with a very fresh, creamy cheese and served with figs, Campari tomatoes, and a red wine reduction. The Insalata Julieta has long been a popular salad, and the new Insalata Romeo spices things up with goat cheese and avocado croutons. There’s also a new risotto, this one prepared with saffron, prosecco, pancetta, and asparagus. New items featuring house-made pasta include bucattini al ragu in a sauce made with slow-cooked shredded veal osso buco and, for vegetarians, the papardelle al funghi, which is made with fresh spinach, asparagus, and wild mushrooms. Meat lovers will enjoy the beef loin served with a Chianti sauce and the tender rump steak with shaved Parmesan cheese. If you are a romantic or a movie buff, you’ll think of Under the Tuscan Sun when you see a sauce of limoncello and orange over grilled chicken breast. Return visitors in the know typically opt for the Caesar salad prepared at table and favorite pastas and pizzas. A new wine list is also in the making, with more Italian wines and more choices at the best prices. As the chef says, “In Italy, wine is like water for the Italian family. It may be Cabo, but for a couple of hours, come to Romeo & Julieta and enjoy authentic Italian fare like an Italian.” With a choice of dining rooms and a beautiful patio open to the stars, it is not difficult to find a romantic spot to celebrate occasions big and small. Start with one of the bubbly Champagnes from Taittinger Terrace. An appetizer worth sharing (or as an entrée) consists of three large prawns wrapped in phyllo, quickly deep fried and served with a variety of dipping sauces. A local fish is usually on the menu, but don’t shy away from trying the salmon flown in fresh from Canada, crispy on the outside and moist on the inside served over pureed cauliflower. Another entrée with a wow factor is the lamb shank. For dessert, ask for the chocolate sphere: decadent, delicious and worthy of any celebration. Valet parking. Sunset Point This trendy wine and pizza bar regularly serves up romantic yet casual dinners alongside great tapas and awe-inspiring sunsets. Completely renovated after Hurricane Odile—and as comfy as always—Sunset Point is the perfect place to see the sun dip into the landscape on a hot summer’s night. This is not the fancy white tablecloth restaurant that its adjacent sister restaurant, Sunset da Mona Lisa, is, but it boasts the same incredible bay views. Tapas at the bar are free during happy hour. Other options on the limited menu include a dozen varieties of wood-fired pizza (try the one with sashimi tuna, arugula, Parmesan, tomatoes, and organic pesto). Panini range from veggie to gourmet with fillet of beef, avocado cream, and rocket salad, and even one with smoked salmon. The Rucola salad is fast becoming a favorite; it comes with arugula, goat cheese, prosciutto, and glazed walnuts. And, of course, you can still opt for Caesar salad with or without chicken. A starter choice might be fried calamari with a special house mayo. Pair these options with any of the 180 labels of international wines, and your dinner date will think you hung the full moon that just might be visible on this romantic night. Km 6 on the Tourist Corridor, Cabo San Lucas (624) 145-8160, www.sunsetmonalisa.com. Nightly 5 p.m.–10 p.m. MasterCard, Visa, and vouchers accepted. $$–$$$ S.A.B. Y Los Cabos Magazine | Summer 2015
