The Secrets of Summer Barefoot Elegance Cabo 101

LETTER FROM THE

PUBLISHER Shhhh. Who wants in on a secret? We all know Los Cabos booms in winter and spring thanks to awe-inspiring whale sightings, ah-inducing weather, and the awesome beach and nightclub scenes, but the quieter summer months just may be the best time to visit. The crowds on beaches are but a whisper compared to the heights of December through April, and this is a prime time to score big-time deals on hotels, activities, and more. In this issue of Los Cabos Magazine, we make the case for summer. Longtime Los Cabos resident Sandra A. Berry shares the insights she’s gleaned in her many years here when it comes to maximizing summer opportunities and beating the summer heat: See “The Secrets of Summer” on page 28. In “My Baja,” page 24, Southern Baja native and veteran tour guide Beto Haro highlights his favorite ways to spend a summer day around Baja (hint: it includes seafood and sea fun). We also round up Los Cabos beaches, page 48, and provide a summer cheat sheet in “Cabo 101,” page 42, that offers peak fun for everyone. Of course, that’s not all you will find in this issue. Explore Los Cabos’ signature “Barefoot Elegance,” page 62; decide whether it’s best to build or buy your dream home, page 34; and learn safe travel tips you can take with you, page 6. Travel Like a Pro Expert advice on how to protect yourself and your privacy—before you even land By Ashley Alvarado

It’s hard to think of any two words more magical than “summer vacation.” Whether you’re a kindergarten student or a CEO, a busy mom or a college coed, this is your chance to break free from the doldrums, to explore new territory, or maybe catch up on some much needed sleep…in paradise. Wherever your travels may take you this summer, it’s important to keep your safety and privacy top of mind. To that end, we’ve consulted with experts and assembled a list of travel tips that will have you ready to 6

conquer the world—like a pro. Los Cabos is an excellent destination, of course, but these tips apply wherever you’re wanting to fly. It’s easy to let headlines get inside your head, and newspapers are full of scary news these days about many of our favorite global destinations. That said, we always start any international travel planning by consulting the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs website: http://travel.state.gov. Here you’ll find information about not only U.S. passports but also alerts and warn-

Los Cabos Magazine | Summer 2017

ings about potentially dangerous destinations. It’s worth noting that while the State Department warns U.S. citizens about the risk of traveling to certain parts of México, there are no concerns regarding Los Cabos listed in its report. The U.S. State Department website also includes resources so that U.S. citizens can receive help during an emergency abroad and laying out the agency’s role in a crisis. You may also want to check out the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (wwwnc .cdc.gov/travel) and World Health

S A F E T Y

Organization (www.who.int/coun tries/en); both provide vaccination recommendations and other travel health precautions. Already know where you’re planning to visit? If it’s an international destination, check out the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). It’s a free service to allow U.S. citizens and nationals traveling abroad to enroll their trip with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. Through the program, you’ll receive important information about safety conditions in your destination country and make it easier for the embassy, friends, and family to reach you in case of an emergency. If traveling with medications, make sure you have a letter from your prescribing doctor. Some countries have strict laws, even when it comes to what we consider over-the-counter medications. The State Department also recommends checking that your health insurance will cover you while abroad. And for those traveling with children, you will likely want to bring along custody documents or written consent from the other parent.

ROGELIO PÉREZ

You’ll also want to make sure your bank knows about your travel dates and destinations; this will help ensure your cards are working and that any suspicious activity can be flagged right away. Last but not least, always make two photocopies of all your travel docu-

ments. Take one with you (just keep it separate from where you keep your actual passport), and leave the other with a family member or friend in the United States. Now that you’ve checked off the pre-travel list, it’s time to consider what you can do while traveling… and that starts at the airport. Don’t leave your laptop, tablet, phone, or other personal materials (like your suitcase) unattended— ever. Make sure all of your devices are password protected; these should be complex passwords. “ChangeMe” and “12345678” just don’t cut it. Once on the plane, try to avoid placing anything in the seat pockets. Public Wi-Fi is insecure; that includes what you’ll likely have on your flight and in the airport. Pierluigi Stella, chief technical officer for Network Box USA, told USA Today many people end up using fake Wi-Fi

hotspots in airports. Stella told the paper: ”Say you are in the San Francisco airport and your wireless shows SFAIrport, no password, free connection. How many people do you think have the skills or even the mindset to question the legitimacy of that wireless connection? And wonder if that’s nothing more than a hacker’s device lurking around? You connect, you browse, you email, and all the while, he’s logging all your data and hacking your computer.” If you do decide to use free Wi-Fi, be sure it’s legitimate and that you are up to date on all firewall and virus protections, and use VPN if at all possible. And once you’re off the plane, be sure to destroy any unneeded travel documents; these contain personal information you don’t want in others’ hands. Why do all this? Because you ought to be spending your vacation worried about tan lines, not hackers. Y

My Baja

L I F E S T Y L E I was raised in La Paz. It is the capital city of Baja California Sur, but more than that, it is a city rich with history, architecture, culture, and natural beauty. This is where my family has called home for five generations. I am proud to be a paceño. And regardless of where work and life may take me, this is the only place I consider home. Spend any time in México, and you will learn that this is a country that loves its nicknames. One endearment for those who live in La Paz is pata salada. In English, you would call us “salty feet.” Why? Because the Sea of Cortés is our playground.

FROM TOP: COURTESY CABO EXPEDITIONS; COURTESY WILD CANYON

That is where I learned to swim, where I learned to fish (with my bare hands, thank you very much), and where I learned to really appreciate the uniqueness and glory that is the Baja Peninsula. When you arrive to Baja California Sur—whether that’s by plane to Los Cabos or La Paz, by boat, or by car— it’s hard not to be overwhelmed by the number of possibilities. In Los Cabos, especially, there’s a ton to do: great restaurants, luxurious spas, and excellent nightclubs. But you really can’t— or at least you shouldn’t—come to Baja without checking out the natural wonders that put Los Cabos on the map in the first place. My first job out of high school was working at Cabo Expeditions (www .caboexpeditions.com.mx). Over the years, I held just about every job possible with this eco-minded activities outfit. I washed boats. I answered phones. I even collected bills. Through this time, I learned more and more about the richness of Baja’s offerings as well as how to be a great tour guide. If you are a first-time visitor to Los Cabos, I encourage you to check out the activities lineup at Cabo Expeditions. You’ll find everything from parasailing over the Cabo San Lucas Bay to swimming with

whale sharks and expeditions out to Espirítu Santo, a UNESCO World Heritage site and archipelago located off the coast of La Paz. With these activities, you’re sure to make memories you’ll cherish and, likely, fall in love with Baja the same way I have. Of course, Cabo Expeditions is one of many activities providers here in Los Cabos. And each one offers something unique. If you’re somebody who loves the water…from a distance, try a cruise. Pez Gato, Tropicat, and Cabo Mar (www.pezgato.com) are part of the

same fleet, and each has its own specialty. Looking for a more sophisticated experience? Enjoy wine, smooth jazz, and delicious appetizers onboard Tropicat. Want more of a fiesta vibe? That’s the theme every night on Cabo Mar’s sunset cruise. My family and I are big fans of Buccaneer Queen (www.wildcabotours .com); it’s part of the Wild Cabo fleet of boats and activities. You can check out the sunset as you drink cocktails and enjoy views of the entire bay. Plan a winter trip, and you’ll love the whale sightings. I come from a very big, very close family, and we have a blast when we do Buccaneer Queen’s snorkeling cruise. Aunts, uncles, cousins, and kids

Cabo Escape are three more that come to mind). You can learn about all of these in the activities guide on page 54. But it’s not just Baja’s seascape that begs to be explored. At Wild Canyon (www.wildcanyon.com.mx), you have the opportunity to check out some of the region’s desert-like terrain. Saddle up on a camel (yes, that is an option!), zip line over a canyon, or speed your way over the outback at this 115-hectare eco-park. There are a ton of ways to get your adrenaline pumping and to work up an appetite day or night here. And, of course, I can’t talk about how much I love Los Cabos and greater Baja without talking about the fishing. Even before Cabo Wabo made Cabo a household name, Los Cabos was earning a reputation with Hollywood A-listers and international adventurers because of the incredible sportfishing here.

And with all that fishing comes some pretty amazing seafood. I love to support local businesses, and there’s not a Los Cabos street taco stand I haven’t visited. When it comes to exploring the seafood options here, it’s fun to visit restaurants big and small. Blue Fish (www.bluefishcabo.com) in San José del Cabo specializes in mariscos; in other words, come here for simple and simply amazing traditional Mexican preparations. At Baja Lobster Co. (www.loscabosguide .com/baja-lobster) on the Cabo San Lucas Marina, the king of crustaceans gets top billing, and you can enjoy it just about any imaginable way.

From top: The whole family will love the pirate-themed Buccaneer Queen; Sammy Hagar’s Cabo Wabo made Cabo a household name; Nick-San blends Japanese recipes with fresh, only-in-México ingredients for magical results.

Growing up in La Paz, I was not much of a sushi fan. That changed with my first visit to Nick-San (www.nicksan.com). The gourmet Japanese restaurant—which has spots in Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, and other cities—blends traditional recipes with fresh, only-in-México ingredients and the results are magical.

all get in on the fun as we cruise the water, snorkel, and explore the surroundings. Oh, and did I mention Buccaneer Queen—like its sister ship, Cabo Legend—is pirate themed? You’ll have a blast!

Whatever you do, make sure to try Baja’s famous “chocolate” clams when visiting. These delicious mollusks are named for the color and not their flavor. You’ll find them at just about any Mexican or seafood restaurant here, and you’ll crave them for years to come. You eat these meaty clams raw, with just a bit of fresh squeezed lime juice and toppings of your choice. I tend to add salsa, Huichol, and a dash of soy sauce.

Los Cabos is almost entirely surrounded by water, and there is a seemingly endless array of ways to explore the sea (Cabo Submarine, Cabo Flyboard, and the nightclub

L I F E S T Y L E The heat and humidity of June, July, and August make summer Los Cabos’ slow season, but this is also a great time to explore the region and its lesser-known activities. Whether you’re a tourist or full-time resident, now’s the time to turn off that computer and let a new adventure begin.

Cabo San Lucas Start your day—before the heat sets in—with a latte next to the Amelia Wilkes Plaza. Sit under the gazebo and enjoy the fresh morning air. Visit the San José del Cabo estuary and bird sanctuary to become one with nature. You can combine nature and fitness with a 3.5-mile bicycle ride starting at Wirikuta Cactus Botanical Garden, which houses 1,500 species of cactus and succulents set in a geometric pattern around three pyramids built from gigantic boulders inspired by Huichol culture. Your bike path will take you through the sculpture garden, a grassy park surrounded by palm trees where you will witness works of some of México’s most respected living artists. Outside of Los Cabos

Is It Better to Build or Buy?

FRANCISCO ESTRADA

Real estate expert Carol S. Billups helps tackle this burning question

34

Los Cabos Magazine | Summer 2017

R E A L

E S T A T E

In our case it was a matter of necessity: After our second house-hunting trip, we simply couldn’t find anything in our price range that we liked. We were shocked when a realtor asked whether we’d considered buying a lot. Building simply hadn’t occurred to us. Yet, that is exactly what we ended up doing—and happily. Still, it’s not a recommendation I make to 100 percent of my clients. Having experienced several market cycles, the question of whether it’s better to build your own or buy a turnkey house is tied to more factors than you might imagine. And everything changes with market dynamics. Here are some questions to ask yourself when deciding whether to build or buy.

lot in the exclusive Querencia community with views of the ocean and golf course was listed at $290,000 U.S. Not only luxury property has been affected; in fact, when this article was being prepared, there were more than 1,000 building lots being offered for sale in the statewide multiple-listing service with prices starting at under $10,000 U.S. for rural lots without services on the East Cape. If you are considering retiring to Los Cabos but are still a few years away from being able to quit working, buying a building lot now and keeping it in your portfolio may make perfect sense.

Where is the market trending?

If you cannot manage an all-cash offer for an existing home or if the seller is not offering to carry paper, building your own or buying presale from the developer may be worth considering. Either option allows you to spread out payments over time, and some developer financing converts to a conventional mortgage upon completion of your house or condo. Some of the newer developer financing options even offer you the choice of peso, U.S. dollar, or Canadian dollar financing.

Custom-built homes are the surefire way to get the home of your dreams. Whether it makes financial sense is another issue. When the real estate market is robust, building may cost less than buying existing inventory. For the past few years, the market has been slow: Many sellers have dropped their asking prices to below the cost of construction. As a result, some real estate agents have been suggesting their clients buy existing inventory, and, in many cases, those clients have snatched up homes at a fraction of what it would cost them to recreate. While there are still a number of these “opportunity” houses, in some areas and price points, they are becoming rarer. In those instances, it may once again be cost effective to build your own. The value of building lots also suffered from the economic downturn, and even view lots in gated communities are being offered at value prices. For example, at press time, a lot in Pedregal with expansive views of the bay and mountains was being offered for only $127,000 U.S., and a

Can I pay cash or do I need a payment plan?

Opting for a custom home will allow you to create your own payment schedule; holding the lot until your finances allow (or until construction loans are once again available). Again, this strategy is particularly useful for those who anticipate having more than two years before they will be able to use the home as a full- or part-time residence. Am I patient enough? Buying pre-construction from a developer or building your own home may require patience on your part. Just as in the United States and CanLos Cabos Magazine | Summer 2017

Before you buy a lot, you may want to consider a consultation with one of the local architects; most will meet with you at the lot at no charge to discuss costs and give you an idea of what can be done with the terrain and view. Be frank about costs and budgets. Keep in mind that for most architects, the budget is another optimistic estimate. Building costs in Los Cabos vary greatly: You can bring a home in on a reasonable budget or spend a fortune. I’ve heard estimates of $120 U.S. per square foot to well over $700 U.S. per squre foot, depending on the terrain, the architect’s fancy, and, most importantly, the finishes. In Los Cabos, the materials are the significant cost in building a home. Labor—even skilled labor—is quite affordable. But most of the materials used to build are shipped in from mainland México, and a large portion are imported from the United States or Canada. The 36

Los Cabos Magazine | Summer 2017

recent devaluation of the peso has caused the cost of imported materials, such as wood, to almost double. To bring your project in within your budget, choose domestic products whenever possible. An often overlooked choice is buying a home in need of updating. Today’s buyers are notorious for overlooking the older homes; that’s part of what has been driving prices down in some of the older communities such as Palmilla, Pedregal, and Cabo Bello. Sellers may offer private financing in addition to reduced prices, making these a very attractive option. Since most of them are structurally sound, the costs to update finishes and bring an older home into the present century can be surprisingly affordable. Build, buy, or update: The perfect choice is waiting for you. ada, construction schedules are at best optimistic estimates. Construction delays are common and can be very lengthy. Construction overruns can last a few months to more than a year. If you are dead set on holding your daughter’s wedding on the deck of your Los Cabos retreat or have a firm retirement or moving date, you would probably be better served buying a turnkey property.

Solomon’s Landing (www.solomonsland ingcabo.com) on the Cabo San Lucas Marina offers a children’s menu; Mi Casa (www.micasagroupcabo.com) is particularly kid-friendly with high chairs and changing tables; and Jack’s Bar & Grill (www.goldenzoneca bo.com/dine.html) has a pirate theme that will delight children of all ages. Several Los Cabos resorts offer family-focused features; there’s a pirate ship pool at Villa del Arco (www.villagroupresorts.com) and a Kid’s Club

at Solaz Los Cabos (www.solazlos cabos.com). And there’s plenty to keep the wee ones entertained all day: Ride specially trained camels at Camel Quest (www.wildcanyon .com.mx), explore the Cabo San Lucas Bay aboard the bright-yellow Cabo Submarine (www.caboexpedi tions.com.mx), or master the high seas on the pirate-themed Buccaneer Queen and Cabo Legend tour ships (www.wildcabotours.com). Every kid is guaranteed to love the Dolphin Discovery (www.dolphindiscovery cabo.com) experience in San José del Cabo, where the whole family can swim with dolphins and snap some frame-worthy photos. Wild Ones There’s no better place to release your inner daredevil than Los Cabos. The desert-like Baja outback is perfect for off-road racing and riding dirt bikes. Check out Baja Dirt (www.loscabosguide.com/baja-dirt) and Off Road Runners (www.wild canyon.com.mx) if you’ve got a need for speed. Want to take your vacation to the next level? At Wild Canyon, the Monster Ziplines just happen to be the longest zip lines in Los Cabos. The eight-line tour will have you flying 300 feet high over awe-inspiring canyons. And that’s not all the adrenaline-spiking the park has to offer: You can also bungee jump from 300 feet high or swing from the gondola at—you guessed it—300 feet off the ground. Another fun way to get high in Cabo is with Cabo Flyboard (www.cabof lyboard.com), which allows clients to soar above the Cabo San Lucas Bay on a hover board-like Flyboard designed by Franky Zapata. The acrobatic moves offer quite a workout and make for the best profile pictures…ever. So, what are you waiting for? Your Los Cabos vacation awaits! Y Los Cabos Magazine | Summer 2017

Gift shops, high-end stores, and on-site boutiques abound in Los Cabos. But there’s one absolute necessity for every summertime visitor that you simply won’t find in any of these tiendas: the perfect Cabo tan. Spray-on tans and self-tanning lotions have come a long way in recent years (yay for science!), and we’re not opposed to anything that will help keep you and your skin healthier in the long run. That said, there’s just nothing like the glow of well-hydrated, sun-kissed skin. Fortunately for us, Los Cabos offers up a plethora of beaches. In addition to gorgeous vistas, each of these beaches features something unique and charming. Here we round up some of our favorite stretches of sand, each perfect for getting your tan on. Want more beaches? Visit www.cabosanlucasbeaches.com. Médano Beach (Playa el Médano) Accessible from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Paseo de la Marina in Cabo San Lucas. Forgive us for leading with the obvious, but Médano Beach in downtown Cabo San Lucas is not only the city’s most swimmable shoreline but also the best equipped. Restaurants, beach clubs, resorts, and spas (yes, spas) dot the playa. It even has its own Facebook page: www .facebook.com/medanobeachcabo. Come early to watch the sunrise, then stick around for breakfast at one of the outstanding eateries. Mango Deck (www.mangodeck.com) is a longtime favorite known for its generous portions (the menu includes American, Mexican, and Japanese cuisine), year-round spring break vibe, and all-you-can-eat weekend brunch buffets. It’s also a spot to spend the whole day: Grab a lounge chair and some shade where you can retreat to hydrate and reapply sunscreen as needed. (When we say hydrate, we mean water, people.) A newer favorite is SUR Beach House Los Cabos (www .bahiacabo.com). The sprawling property blends whimsy and sophistication, chic modernity and classic Cabo cool. SUR comes from the same team that operates the Bahia Hotel and its on-site restaurant, Bar Esquina. Why does this matter? Because it pretty much guarantees an excellent menu, customer service, and investment not only in your experience but that of the staffers you’ll meet throughout the day. Did we mention this is also the new home of Cabo SUP? In between stand-up paddleboarding sessions, you can relax on a shade-covered day Los Cabos Magazine | Summer 2017

You can’t visit Los Cabos without also making a trip—one way or another—to Land’s End. The iconic arch is beyond photogenic, and you can snap pics of it from aboard sunset cruises, snorkeling tours, kayaking trips, or while exploring aboard a kayak. The nearby Lover’s Beach is a great launching point for snorkeling and swimming, but we’re also fond of the no-frills shoreline when it comes to relaxing with friends and family. Lover’s Beach is located on the calm waters of the Sea of Cortés; you can also cross the sand to the Pacific side, where the playa’s known as Divorce Beach. Neither beach has any facilities or stores, so you’ll want to bring all your necessities for the day. For those who are looking for more action than relaxation, you can also look for a pick-up game of volleyball on the beach. Just remember to keep that bottle of water handy! Cabo Pulmo See map on page 96. You’ll need to rent a car or arrange a tour to Cabo Pulmo, but believe us when we say seeing the world-famous reef here is worth it. Cabo Pulmo is a national marine park, and the snorkeling and scuba diving conditions you’ll find here are among the best in the world. There’s also plenty to do when you’re out of the water. Explore the shoreline and take in the dramatic change from the beach to the desert-like surroundings, relax with a book, or try some of the local seafood options in Los Frailes. 50

Reel Big Deal We look ahead to the fall’s biggest fishing tournaments, where anglers are hoping to pull in some big prizes

Los Cabos just may be the most dynamic tourism destination in the world. Beaches abound, as do high-end restaurants, hotels, spas, resorts, and golf courses. For the budget-conscious, there are countless deals to explore (starting with Los Cabos Magazine’s prepaid voucher program, of course). And the adventurous will delight in high-thrill activities like zip lining, scuba diving, offroad racing, and more. Don’t for a minute think, though, that Cabo San Lucas 52

Los Cabos Magazine | Summer 2017

has forgotten its roots as a sleepy fishing village. Cabo and the surrounding region continue to offer world-class fishing conditions and impressive jackpots for its fishing tournaments. In fact, Los Cabos is home to some of the world’s most popular deep-sea fishing tournaments. These competitions pop up throughout the year and range in size, popularity, and prize—from mere bragging rights to more than a million bucks (that’s U.S. dollars). The fall, though, is

O U T D O O R S

when competition starts to really heat up. Here we highlight some favorite tournaments. The fall season kicks off with the annual Los Cabos Billfish Tournament in Cabo San Lucas. There’s final registration and a kick-off party on October 15, then anglers hit the water the next morning. The base entry fee is $5,000 U.S. per team, and that includes one–six registered anglers and allows teams to enter any of the optional jackpots. Last year’s competition included 37 teams, and they released 32–35 billfish each day. Tournament organizers reported, “The fleet released 95 video verified billfish, consisting of 56 blues, 36 stripes, and three blacks. There was a grand total of $451,200 U.S. awarded to the winning teams. For more information, including a breakdown of rules and prizes, visit www.los cabosbillfishtournament.com. Bisbee’s hosts three fishing tournaments in the Los Cabos every year. The first takes place August 1–5, and two are held in the fall. Bisbee’s Los Cabos Offshore Tournament is often referred to as “Little Bisbee’s,” and because it’s held October 19–22, it’s considered a warm-up to the Bisbee’s Black and Blue Marlin Tournament, which begins October 24. Anglers in Bisbee’s Los Cabos Offshore Tournament target all the major sportfishing species, like marlin, sailfish, and tuna. Its smaller entry fee: just $1,500 U.S. In 2016, 109 teams participated. Bisbee’s Black and Blue Marlin Tournament is arguably the most popular competition in the state of Baja California Sur if not the entire country. After debuting in 1981, it has become a staple in Cabo San Lucas. Anglers from all over the world—and with various skill levels—fly into this southernmost tip of the Baja Peninsula to compete for several millions in cash rewards. More than a hundred teams participate each year, with a base entry fee of $5,000 U.S. Opting into all the jackpots, though, can bring that total up to about $71,500 U.S. Bisbee’s tournaments are known as “the world’s richest fishing tournaments,” and for good reason: This is an event that historically has paid out more million-dollar winners than any other. For more information, visit www.bisbees.com. The Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot returns November 1. The annual event, which is sponsored by Western Outdoor News, is open to everyone and has one of the most accessible minimum entry fees: $1,000 U.S. There are more than $750,000 U.S. in cash awards and $100,000 U.S. in prizes, several optional jackpots, and parties left and right. The slogan of this competition, after all, is “Fish hard, party harder.” For more information, go to www .loscabostunajackpot.com. Y Los Cabos Magazine | Summer 2017

Barefoot Elegance Fine dining and Los Cabos’ signature relaxed style make for a perfect pairing

D I N I N G On one of our first visits to Los Cabos many years ago, my husband and I happened upon a restaurant that offered to serve us dinner on the beach. I mean literally, at a table in the sand. Removing our shoes, we carefully followed the server to a table situated as close to the water as possible without getting wet. The white-clothed table and chairs glistened in the moonlight with a blown-glass globe and its flickering flame. An almost-full moon was slowly rising, casting a shimmering glow over the water, while slow rolling waves caressed the shoreline just in front of us. What followed was a suburb meal, unobtrusive service, and a bottle of chilled Champagne. Today there are fewer restaurants with beach access than there were back then, but Los Cabos’ signature relaxed vibe—what we call barefoot elegance—continues to thrive. You’re in Los Cabos, and you’ve been living in your swimsuit, shorts, and flip-flops. You’ve eaten a variety of tacos and explored the many types of margaritas served here. Tonight, you want something different: someplace romantic with candlelight, exotic cocktails, stimulating conversation, and an eclectic menu. You want to wear that new ensemble that is casual yet elegant. Word to the wise: Most fine dining restaurants in Los Cabos expect you to show up in more than ripped jeans and sweats. Though Cabo may be considered a T-shirt town, it also boasts a nice selection of fine dining restaurants, where you can feel sophisticated, comfortable yet polished. The reason for this is that some eateries of a certain caliber wish for their guests to experience what they have created. They want to take you out of your ordinary life and for a couple of hours allow you to be a part of an exceptional culinary happening. Right this way. Your table’s waiting. Welcome to De Cortez Restaurant (www.decortezrestau rant.com), located in the Sheraton Grand Los Cabos Hacienda del Mar. This multiple-award-winning oceanfront restaurant is as close to the sea as you can get, especially when seated along the low wall in an intimate setting with nothing but sand stretching to the water’s edge. On any given evening, the waves may be crashing in front of you, or as smooth as a glass tabletop. Candlelight, live music, indescribable service, and good food are De Cortez’s ingredients for elegant dining mixed to perfection. Executive chef Manuel De Luca is at work lovingly designing your plate while the sommelier creates a perfect wine pairing. Those seeking romance, look no further. For 20 years, Pitahayas Restaurant (www.pitahayas.com) has been the place to celebrate a special occasion, espeLos Cabos Magazine | Summer 2017

You have to admit that Champagne exudes romance. The owners of Sunset Mona Lisa (www.sunsetmonalisa.com) realized this marvel and created Taittinger Terrace, which specializes in the golden bubbly and offers an intriguing menu of oysters and other delectable canapés. This is a great way to start a romantic evening. The view from any of its many terraces is absolutely spectacular, and it’s easy to believe the stories told of at least one marriage proposal a night and 100 weddings a year at this fantasy-like location. Michelin-trained chef Paulo della Corte brings all the flavors of the Mediterranean in uniquely styled dishes; he specializes in Italian seafood. The Resort at Pedregal (www.theresortatpedregal.com), where a tunnel was dug through a mountain to get to the seashore, offers cliffside dining at El Farallon where 10foot waves crash on the retaining wall to the delight of diners who are enjoying fresh market-to-table seafood served family style on El Farallon’s Champagne terrace. There are still a few upscale restaurants that offer dining right on the sand. One is in the oldest resort landmark in Cabo San Lucas: Hacienda Beach Club. It is home to Cocina & Cantina (www.haciendacocina.com), where your dining options include indoor, on the terrace, a palapa bar, or a table in the sand where, when a cruise ship is in the bay, it appears to be docked on the sand right in front of you. Wanting to capitalize on beachfront dining, the Bahia Hotel & Beach House, which includes Bar Esquina, took a fading beachfront property, totally revamped it, and named it SUR Beach House Los Cabos (www.bahiacabo .com). Here is you can actually put your toes in the sand, sit on lounge chairs under a sea of white umbrellas, and dine on an eclectic menu of Mexican, Asian, and Peruvian influences.

Every beachfront restaurant in Los Cabos offers a unique experience. Pictured, from top: Pitahayas Restaurant, Taittinger Terrace, and SUR Beach House Los Cabos.

cially with its magnificent palapa, multiple terraces leading to the beach, La Cava Santiago, Pitayita’s Bar, full moon celebrations, and luxurious atmosphere. Who could ask for anything more elegant and romantic? Executive chef Volker Romeike has been with the restaurant since its opening and knows what it takes to keep his customers coming back year after year for special occasions or simply an excellent meal in elegant surroundings. His menu—a blend of Asian, Hawaiian, and Mexican—works, and works wonders. The establishment has won numerous awards, including the Wine Spectator Award of Elegance.

The best of the Mediterranean is on display at Alcaravea Gourmet, a downtown Cabo San Lucas bistro that has evolved from a tiny eatery into one of the finest restaurants in all of Los Cabos. Spanish for “caraway,” Alcaravea was founded in 2006 by chef Enrique Díaz Gerard, a México City native whose own father was a masterful chef. Having worked in hotel restaurants throughout México, he went on to travel extensively through Europe, where he refined his palate and found inspiration for many of the favorite dishes much beloved by Alcaravea patrons. The first iteration of Alcaravea Gourmet was a tiny sidewalk café that quickly outgrew its space. In the early days, you might not see advertisements or magazine write-ups, but locals were in love and couldn’t stop talking about the chef’s tasty creations. The restaurant has grown, but it hasn’t lost its signature intimate feel. Here— where vibrant flowers and vines frame the entrance—you’re invited to dine, as though you’re at home, on dishes that celebrate not only the flavors of

the Mediterranean (pesto, feta, juicy tomatoes) but also the bounty of the seas that surround Cabo San Lucas. Visit Alcaravea Gourmet’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/alcaravea gourmet) to see postings highlighting special menus of the day: Recent favorites include duck lasagna, fish in asparagus sauce, and the catch of the day prepared with a creamy sauce of Kalamata olives, capers, shallots, mushrooms, and peppers. Azul When the Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort unveiled its made-over space, it included Azul—a subzero tequila, mezcal, and Mexican-style tapas lobby bar featuring a mind-boggling collection of tequila. Cocktail connoisseurs will appreciate the handcrafted cocktail menu, with standout concoctions like the Rosemary Paloma and Tepache Collins. The 160-seat venue also features breathtaking ocean views and a tapas menu that wows: Think tempura tacos, grasshoppers (here known as “chapulines”), and slow-roasted pork sopes. The signature dish at Azul is its guacamole with grasshoppers and mezcal. To prepare it, the grasshoppers are carefully washed and toasted on a comal (a traditional clay cooking tool), then chefs season them with lime juice and spices. The crunchy grasshoppers are delicious and the perfect thing to dip into Azul’s fresh guacamole. And the presentation is Instagram worthy, as are all of the tapas you will see served at the Hilton’s fantastic lobby spot. Baja Lobster Co. Once a sleepy fishing village, Cabo San Lucas is now a world-class destination for travelers seeking luxurious accommodations, five-star restaurants, and complete relaxation. But, at its heart, Cabo remains unchanged.

Here, the people, the land, and the sea are woven together—forever intertwined and forever dependent on one another. Located along the Cabo San Lucas Marina in a stretch known as the Marina Golden Zone, Baja Lobster Co. is a celebration of the sea’s bounty. Here you will find dishes that showcase seafood in familiar and inventive ways. Start with a casual appetizer of lobster tacos or salmon carpaccio (thin slices of lobster with a hint of pepper, lime juice, olives, pesto, and Parmesan). The creamy lobster bisque is a must-try, especially as the breeze dances its way up from the bay at night. There are several lobster preparations here, but we’re partial to the San Lucas (garlic, herbs, and a spicy tomato sauce au gratin), the trio (lion’s claw scallops, lobster, and shrimp), and the salad (the cilantro dressing is a revelation!). variety from region to region. In the same way that China has its “eight great regional cuisines” (plus Taiwanese-style dishes), México is home to incredibly diverse cooking styles (mainstays in Oaxaca are quite different from what you’ll find in Veracruz, for example). And, in Southern Baja, we are known for our fresh approach to cooking, one that often emphasizes seafood and blends in staples like tostadas and spice. At Blue Fish Seafood, all of this is realized. The team here focuses on Southern Baja flavors and seafood. There’s a ton of ceviche here: sea bass, shrimp, scallop, and octopus among the options. And you can have each prepared in myriad ways; fun names include “Octopus in Love” and “Chamoy Tropical.” (The chef’s most beloved dish is a sea bass ceviche with fresh mango.) We’re also partial to the spicy scallop aguachile, which is available seasonally. The Shoppes at Palmilla, km 27.5 on the tourist corridor, San José del Cabo, (624) 172-6652, www.bluefishcabo .com. Take one visit to the spot, and you’ll soon fall in love with home-style cooking, generous portions, and excellent customer service. Our favorite dish? The green chilaquiles topped with steak are hearty and delicious. That said, you really can’t go wrong with any of the hearty offerings. Come dinnertime, you can start with a steaming tortilla soup, one of the best in Los Cabos. Then comes the decision of what to order. Favorites include jumbo coconut shrimp, Imperial jumbo shrimp wrapped in bacon, devil-style shrimp, garlic fish, lobster, and surf and turf— all served with rice and garden vegetables. Traditional Mexican food is prepared to perfection and includes all the typical favorites: fajitas, enchiladas, chile relleno, carne asada, and the list goes on. Dessert can be a simple, beautifully decorated flan with strawberries, or go for the show with flamed bananas or strawberries over ice cream or Mexican coffee. Start with a Mescalita, a delightful light concoction made with pineapple and mezcal. Explore the Blouet’s creations with the tasting menu with or without wine pairing. An example of starter choices are tuna tartar or bay scallops with black aguachile sauce. A must-have is pumpkin cream soup served from a fresh pumpkin as another course. As a main course, short ribs and beef “petals” are the ticket for meat eaters, while shrimp with yellow plum tomatoes and habanero mole or the catch-of-the-day served Zarandeado-style could be the choice for seafood lovers. In México, the fish for this dish is typically split in half from head to tail, leaving in most of the bones. Vegetarians will enjoy a veggie symphony or risotto with huitlacoche, a corn mushroom delicacy. It will be difficult, but save room for dessert, which can be Valrhona chocolate brick, a very pure and intense cocoa with a red mahogany color, or a blue cheese soufflé. At Canela Restaurant & Bar, you dance through México— its different eras and regions—yet always feel grounded in the Cabo San Lucas of today: a city whose culinary scene is marked by a commitment to fresh, locally sourced ingredients of the highest quality. From the outside, the nondescript Canela may not catch your eye. But once seated, you can’t help but marvel at the wood, glass, and iron stairway that winds its way up the towering two-story space. Designed by Guadalajara artist Ernesto Cruise, the stairway is the visual focal point. But the entire restaurant is a macabre masterpiece. Just as Mexican craftsmanship is woven through the building, so too are traditional Mexican dishes in every part of the Canela menu, which includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The restaurant opens at 8 a.m., and you’ll want to explore its breakfast menu: Chilaquiles are served with chicken and red or green sauce; huevos rancheros come topped with rancherastyle salsa and sides of beans and rice; and divorced eggs offer the best of both worlds (one egg with red sauce, the other with green sauce). Framed by a quartet of white pillars on a terrace that overlooks a spacious infinity pool and the rather more spacious Sea of Cortés, El Meson’s alfresco dining area offers a spectacular setting. Fresh local seafood and produce are the primary ingredients, and the Mexican menu options are both numerous and delicious, with appetizers like octopus carpaccio and chocolate clams zarandeado and entrées like panseared tuna with yellow curry mole and basmati rice. Come early for breakfast. Starting at 7:30 a.m., you can enjoy Continental-style breakfasts (artisanal baking, parfaits, and freshly squeezed juices) or Grand Meson dishes (think smoked salmon, farm-fresh eggs, and the like). These can be paired with excellent gourmet coffee, teas, or Oaxacan hot chocolate. Interested in something fast? Try one of El Meson’s licuados (there are protein elixirs, energy boosters, and delicious detoxing green juices). The specialty of the house, however, is served dinnertime: It’s a generous mariscada de molcajete featuring Pacific shrimp, parrotfish, and octopus, with accents of Meyer lemon, mezcal, and garlic. This seafood bowl is flambéed tableside by one of the restaurant’s excellent waiters; the service is easily equal to the food and views. Imomo Sushi House The Golden Zone plays tribute to the Land of the Rising Sun at Imomo Sushi House, a delightful spot right on the Cabo San Lucas Marina. The sleek space features splashes of red throughout: the wall, the ceiling, tables, and even napkins. That red carries through to the menu, which features Japan’s signature export—sushi—as well ramen, yakisoba, teppanyaki, and more. Imomo offers one of the most accessible sushi menus in Los Cabos; not only are the dishes affordable but they’re also incredibly tempting and not at all intimidating. Start with an appetizer of perfectly salted edamame or wonton tostada, a fun fusion of Mexican and Japanese flavors (totadas are made of wontons and topped with spicy tuna, avocado, and a house sauce). You could go for a hearty main course like yakisoba with grilled shrimp (it’s delicious), but it’s more fun to order sushi and share with the table. The signature

La Casa de Don Juan Here’s a test I apply when visiting a Mexican restaurant for the first time: I order a café de la olla. It’s a traditional way to prepare coffee in México, and it’s a personal favorite. What’s different about it? It’s most often prepared in an earthen clay pot and features the distinct flavors of piloncillo (unrefined sugar) and cinnamon. I love it, and when a kitchen executes the drink perfectly, I immediately have more faith in the entire menu. When it comes to La Casa 80

de Don Juan, I can tell you it’s faith well placed. This place is fantastic. It’s no wonder the spot became an instant favorite when it opened in 2014. Café de la olla is the perfect pairing for breakfast items that range from huevos divorciados (two eggs, one with red sauce and the other with green) to menudo (tripe with white or red sauce with cilantro, onion, oregano, and lime) and chicharrones (fried pork skin) served in a red sauce. In the last year, La Casa de Don Juan extended its schedule to include lunch (and an early dinner). Come for the the prix fixe lunch meal, which includes the soup of the day or green salad; two choices of sides such as baked potato, vegetables, pasta, Mexican rice, or beans; and an entrée (the fish of the day either grilled or batter fried, shrimp fixed in a similar manner but with a spicy diablo sauce, chicken breast stuffed with spinach, chicken or fish fingers with French fries, chiles rellenos, taquitos, a popular pork dish called cochinita pibil, or two beef dishes) for less than $15 U.S. Transpeninsular service road just past City Express Hotel, Cabo San Lucas, (624) 105-9339. Here, he brought his expertise, sensibility, and exceptional palate to restaurants like La Dolce and Sunset Mona Lisa. In 2009, he opened DOC and designed its menu from scratch. And earlier this year, he debuted La Deriva in the Solaz Los Cabos. Longtime fans will recognize signature Olivero elements at La Deriva: There’s a marked commitment to fresh, high-quality ingredients that are prepared in such a way that each shines. La Panga Antigua Restaurant & Bar An amazing transition takes place when you leave the hustle and bustle of the tourist area near the old church in San José del Cabo–especially on the night of the seasonal Art Walk (November–June)—and enter through an unassuming doorway into this popular eatery. Lush tropical foliage surrounds several levels of 150-year-old adobe walls, rock walkways, and enchanting seating areas at what used to be an old mansion. At the far end is an antique panga (a roughly hewn wooden boat for which the restaurant is named) that, could it talk, probably could tell a few tall tales. The staff scurries about taking orders and dishing up incredible farm-to-table fare such as appetizers of three-cheese ravioli in a squash blossom sauce, tuna with sesame seed crust and cilantro aioli, baby octopus, or sea scallops with a citrus vinaigrette. A soup of the day is offered, as well as salads that might be a mixture of grilled pears, nuts, dates, beets, grilled corn, and lettuces tossed in various vinaigrette dressings. Entrées worth every bite are grilled lamb chops with pistachio-sesame seed crust or breaded shrimp stuffed with goat cheese with

And it’s northern Italian cuisine that is on display at La Dolce’s two restaurants: in Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. Expect rich sauces, more beef, and more butter. Nearly two decades in, co-owners Stefan Miotto and Juan Calderoni know how to keep customers coming back. Los Barriles There’s nothing particularly new about blending Asian and Mexican flavors. The flavor profiles are strikingly simi-

lar, and Chinese migration to México started more than 450 years ago. The influence can best be experienced by combining big bold flavors of both Mexican and the Far East, and the owner of Los Barriles has done just that. The results? An eclectic menu that suits even the most discriminate palates. A newly designed menu showcases beautiful photos of what to expect when a dish is served. Thai seafood soup is the signature opener, while flamed cheese with tequila in a molcajete runs a close second (a tough decision when a plate of Sevichimi passes by with its thin slices of tuna seasoned with soy, lemon, sesame oil, dollops of guacamole, and serrano pepper slivers). Entrées include whole red snapper, lobster, shrimp cooked to order, combos of seafood and USDA Choice steak, and fall-off-the-bone barbecued ribs oven-baked for seven hours. In 1974, Baja California Sur—the state that encompasses the Los Cabos cities of San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas—was the last state admitted to the republic of México. And while it may be but a young thing compared to many Mexican states (Oaxaca, by comparison, was admitted in 1823), you can still explore Los Cabos and Mexican history and flavors at spots throughout the region. The Golden Zone restaurant Los Deseos, for example, is an excellent destination for those who want to grow more familiar with traditional Mexican cooking. Visit the Cabo San Lucas Marina restaurant to discover dishes that dance about México’s many culinary traditions and regions. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, Los Deseos serves everything from pan dulce to mesquite-style marrow and old-fashioned mole. The restaurant boasts a tremendous number of lunch and dinner entrées, and it can be tough to narrow the field. Here we present a suggested dinner, from appetizer to dessert: Start with the three-cheese queso fundido. Three cheeses and tequila are flamed in a molcajete and served with fresh tortillas. It tastes absolutely sinful, but is totally worth it. Follow with a pumpkin flower soup, especially if you’re visiting Los Deseos a night with a cool breeze over the marina. The chile en nogada is a beloved tradition; essentially, it’s a poblano pepper stuffed with minced pork, beef, and dried fruits topped with a nut and pomegranate sauce. For dessert, pair a traditional cinnamony café de la olla with a coconut flan; it’s a specialty of the house. Cabo San Lucas Marina, Cabo San Lucas, (624) 145-6011, www.golden zonecabo.com. Mi Casa San José Like its sister restaurant in Cabo San Lucas, this spot is housed in a historic hacienda-style residence that dates back to the city’s first days. But in Los Cabos restaurants, we’re also seeing a fantastic move toward sustainable dining. As part of the Mi Casa family of restaurants, Peacock’s subscribes to an ultra-fresh and organic approach to fine dining: Produce is grown locally on the restaurant’s own organic farm in nearby Pescadero. Chefs favor non-commercial fish and source it from a group of local fishermen. And beef is purchased exclusively from a Sonoran ranch that does not use growth hormones or GMO corn in its feedlots. The results are undeniable. The menu dances from Europe to the Americas, demonstrating both whimsy and purpose. Pitahayas As the Los Cabos dining scene continues to welcome new entries, Pitahayas stands as an esteemed veteran. For more than two decades, chef Volker Romeike’s restaurant has drawn people in with its stunning views—it’s located within the sprawling Sheraton Grand Los Cabos Hacienda del Mar and overlooks the shoreline below—eclectic menu, and signature blend of local and Asian-Polynesian ingredients. The restaurant debuted in 1995 as a Pacific Rim concept. The restaurant and its menu underwent a renovation in 2015. In addition to a more modern look for Pitahayas, Romeike made over the menu to blend Mexican and Asian flavors. The results have been palpable. You’ll need more than one visit—more like several—to try all the standouts. Start with the blue taco with pork belly and scallops or the taro tostada with carnitas. The fresh octopus salad is a revelation, while the tuna poke is a delightful summer bite: fresh tuna is paired with watermelon, jalapeño, Tajín, and taro. Give yourself over to the chef’s eclectic yet unerringly delicious combinations: Filipino-style lumpia spring rolls with Mexican pork carnitas and Southeast Asian Kaffir lime, for example, or jalapeño-and-honey-glazed pork belly plated with sweet potato plantain mash, Hawaiian barbecue sauce, and Asian ratatouille. D I N I N G you may prefer a cool salad. The caprese is a celebration of fresh, quality ingredients (tomato, mozzarella, basil, balsamic vinegar, and olive oil), while the Caesar uses the original recipe that was created in Tijuana, México, several decades ago. Each is a perfect accompaniment to the bruschetta appetizer. Can’t resist those pasta cravings? The Marinara spaghetti is a fantastic showcase of the sea’s bounty: It comes topped with shrimp, mussels, and squid. Ask your server for suggested wine pairings. Romeo & Julieta Known as “the Italian hideaway full of surprises,” Romeo & Julieta has delighted guests with its showmanship, bold flavors, and commitment to high standards for more than three decades. Italian-born chef Matias Forte has proved himself a formidable ambassador of the restaurant, as well as his homeland, its food, and wine. With dishes like pera e ficchi (pear and fig) pizza and ravioli al burro e Salvia (ravioli stuffed with ricotta and spinach and served in a butter-sage sauce with cherry tomatoes), he does Italy proud. Try Forte’s grilled baby lamb chops or the pork belly, which is cooked for 36 hours served with beer gravy. Two new salads are offered along with the favorite Caesar salad prepared at table. Tortellini stuffed with king crab is a new item served in a light seafood sauce, and pizza lovers will be pleased to see a new variety with smoked salmon. He’s also trying to win over Los Cabos residents and visitors when it comes to other aspects of Italian life. He’s created a new wine list, with more Italian wines and more choices at the best prices. With a choice of dining rooms and a beautiful patio open to the stars, it is not difficult to find a romantic spot to celebrate occasions big and small. Solomon’s Landing Here’s a story you hear a lot in México: A man comes to Cabo on a fishing trip and never wants to go home again. That’s essentially what happened when Brian Solomon came to Cabo more than two decades ago and, on the spot, decided to buy a small taco bar and open his own restaurant. These days, Solomon’s Landing is much more than a taco bar; it’s a full-service restaurant and bar known for its huge menu (we’re talking pizza, pasta, sushi, burgers, breakfast, and more!) and fun atmosphere. This is a great spot to pull up a bar stool and watch your favorite team in action. Pair the game with a margarita, mojito, Los Cabos Magazine | Summer 2017

Return later in the day to watch all your favorite sporting events. Dozens of terrific sandwich and hamburger options are crafted daily, including the delectable fresh tuna medallion cooked rare or medium and topped with arugula and tasty, delicate cilantro sauce. They also tend to get along nicely with the restaurant’s killer ceviche and organic salad with lettuce, cherry tomatoes, fresh mango, tangerine wedges, hearts of palms, fresh mozzarella, feta cheese, and Solomon’s signature passion fruit dressing. Sunset Mona Lisa

D I N I N G with three unique menus. In addition to Sunset Mona Lisa, there’s the Taittinger Terrace Champagne bar and Sunset Point, where you can enjoy pizza, tapas, wine and rather stellar sunset views. This is the perfect spot to gather with friends and take in 180-degree vistas of the Sea of Cortés and Land’s End. Stick around, too, to enjoy the view of the moon rising while enjoying a glass of wine and perhaps a light snack before dinner. Of course, you can have a fullcourse dinner here as well. This is also the ideal place for an after-dinner rendezvous with dessert cocktails. Appetizers include a selection of mozzarella specials such as Pettole (a prosciutto roll served with arugula and cherry tomatoes) as well as other favorites like tuna tartar, meatballs with a mushroom sauce, or fried calamari. Pizzas are king here; they come straight from a wood-burning oven with a nice variety of toppings from which to choose. The mini magnum—a trio of three desserts—is perfect for those who have trouble deciding. Dessert drinks available include prosecco and port wine. Km 5.5 on the tourist corridor, Cabo San Lucas (624) 145-8160, www.sunset monalisa.com. Nightly 5 p.m.–10 p.m. MasterCard, Visa, and vouchers accepted. $$–$$$$ S.A.B.

Vela Tropical breezes are like a caress at the Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort’s outdoor patio dining spot; enjoy those whispers of wind as you look out over an expansive infinity pool toward the seemingly infinite Sea of Cortés. The menu is just as lovely as the views. Chef Elihu Sepúlveda’s mastery of a refined Italian-themed menu are made unique via a few regional Mexican twists. The fresh local seafood, for example, is spectacular, particularly in offerings like the yellowfin tuna carpaccio and the pan-seared totoaba. The latter is a signature dish; it’s prepared with mozzarella, pesto, peperonata, and picked lemon. The pastas are terrific, as one would expect at an Italianesque eatery. Delicious Italian dishes abound, including traditional specialties like lasagna and spaguetti alla carbonara. More adventurous types, however, will want to sample house fusions like the black mole linguini with poached fennel lobster and eggplant ragout, or the White & Black pappardelle with giant shrimp and jalapeños. And meat lovers will appreciate the roasted lamb rack made with mint and rosemary gremolata, or the 45-day-aged rib eye for two. For dessert, try the Deconstructed Chocolate Tartufo, a Valrhona cake with chocolate mousse and apricot ganache served with toffee ice cream and crème anglaise. This decadent meal capper pairs perfectly with 1921 Tequila Cream, México’s answer to Bailey’s Irish Cream. Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort, km.19.5 on the Tourist Corridor, (624) 145-6500, www.hiltonloscabos.com. Nightly 6 p.m.–10:30 p.m. All major credit cards accepted. $$–$$$ C.S.
