We will cover not only the basic functions of the human cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous, digestive, immune, and reproductive systems, but also the effects of diet, exercise, prescription and illicit drugs, and stress on these systems and how you can make changes to improve your health. The course includes up-to-date information on biological and medical discoveries related to human health. In addition, we will discuss issues related to mental health, addiction, and sexually transmitted diseases. The local and global health consequences of some human practices will also be explored. Problem solving and critical thinking skills will be emphasized as students investigate the structure and function of the human organism. Areas of study include the major body systems, human evolution, homeostasis, cells, tissues, heredity, gene expression, biotechnology and the interaction of humans and the environment. Weekly laboratory experiments on all major topics will allow the student to use the scientific method to gain knowledge and practical experience in the collection and analysis of data, and in drawing appropriate conclusions.
