HELLO This September, I had completed one year of fine furniture design and maker’s course at Robinson House Studio (Marc Fish) at Brighton. Prior to embarking the course, my background experience and education was in architecture. I had graduated from Slovak University of Technology (STU) in Bratislava with a Master’s in Architecture and soon after that I worked in various architectural practises in UK. I had spent three years as an architectural assistant and designer at Leonard Design Architects and a year at CPMG architects in Nottingham. During my employment in these companies, I have had challenging opportunities of working on a range of residential and commercial projects of varying scales and stages. I was proactively working with designers, small and large scale architectural offices, contractors and individual clients. My responsibilities included delivering competitions, detailing, designing, planning and construction drawings as well as producing marketing packages and presentations. Participating on a broad range of projects within the UK and internationally had influenced and enhanced my work ethic and efficiency, technical knowledge, computing skills (REVIT, rhino 3D, CAD, adobe creative) and capability to work independently as well as within the office structure, following industry regulations and trends. Working in these architectural practises had been exciting, enlightening and had progressed my architectural career further, however, I was ready to dive into unknown territory and obtain new experiences. Hence, I joined Marc Fish studio – fine furniture making atelier which allowed me greater artistic freedom and expression. Having worked on projects that are much more on a human scale, gave me deeper understanding of design, techniques, materiality and the significance of having a vision and being able to translate my ideas into a tangible form. Every project I worked on presents some form of challenges and struggles I have gone through. I learned that, in order to be successful, the essence of working on such projects requires exceptional patience, accuracy, perseverance and energy.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
The scene in which Thelma and Louise are cornered by the police on the edge of the Grand Canyon shows the companions make a conscious choice to drive off the cliff. The image of them staggering on the precipice launched a flow of ideas I just couldn’t abandon. The main challenge of this project was to incorporate the beauty and scenery of the steep-sided canyon and its hidden caves into the exterior and interior design.
THELMA
To support my concept, I picked two timbers which I thought would best identify with my vision. Pale pink pear which, after the finish application will turn to a fleshy rich pink colour (Thelma). The second choice was a rare lacewood infected by a fungus due to the wrong dying technique (Louise). This serendipitous error created interesting abstract patterns on the surface that you wouldn’t associate with any type of wood. Thelma’s interior imitates the contours of the imaginary canyon which was deepened and widen by rivers whilst Louise’s parts represent the caves throughout the canyon and the contrasting formations rising from the surface stalagmites, columns or flowstones interpreted in a more conceptual form. These inner parts also function as partitions and divide spaces to create compartments for storing personal items.

Brighton, England Individual Work Robinson House Studio The most significant feature of the table is unquestionably the unpolished steel frame which gives it a unique character. Each angle gives you a different view. Each lighting condition gives you a different shadow. With this piece I wanted to create something diverse and distinguished by an unexpected optical illusion. As a consequence, there comes into being a link between the functional and seemingly temporary structure and the conceptual shape that is the central theme of this table. The abnormal composition was the idea through which I wanted to express my fascination with imperfection. Coarsely textured steel rods add an authentic value to the final design. The rough and unfinished surface combined with the visible welds and steel rod’s symbols allowed me the advantage of expressing the inherent qualities of the steel. Therefore the emotional body of work tends to be very gutsy, crude and rough. Lack of finish became the finish itself. The top view reveals similar quadrilateral shapes descending and rotating. Together they create an abstract image which evokes an illusion of infinity. The exposure of the raw material is juxtaposed with a circular glass top in a grey tint which covers the steel frame. The final result encompasses an eclectic variety of aesthetic influences. 8

Brighton, England Individual Work Robinson House Studio The initial design concept started as a non-objective form of varied geometric shapes stacked together. The crucial point of the design process was the debate over two competing ideas - the symmetrical or asymmetrical visage. This was the fundamental issue I considered, very conscious of the effect this would have on the overall impression of the piece. In order to generate a feeling of boundless space rather than definite borders I went for an imbalanced version. Afterwards I divided the top into four equal sections. This created space for two drawers, a wide drawer on the left and a smaller one on the right with an opening inbetween. The grandeur of the desk is conveyed by the small details which were meticulously crafted using traditional woodworking skills with hand and machine tools. The overall look, which resembles the harmony and rhythm of the suprematism movement has become the signature of the desk. Accuracy and precision is paramount - hundredths of millimetres accuracy which, in everyday life doesn’t make a great deal of difference. I learnt that neglecting a tiny imperfection in the beginning can have major consequences in the later stages. It was necessary to be extremely fastidious at all times, which was extremely time consuming but the final result was worthwhile. 12

SPUTNIK1 STOOL Brighton, England Individual Work Robinson House Studio
Sputnik is a Russian word meaning “travelling companion of the world”. It is the name of the world’s first artificial satellite launched by the Soviet union and also the name of the stool I designed and made. The most obvious features are the basic geometric forms, such as squares, lines and rectangles conveying their character through the pitch black timber known as Bog Oak. Sputnik1 is not concerned with representing an idea of functional furniture. In sharp contrast to conventional pieces it embodies a profoundly anti materialist philosophy. Thus it is intended to express my designs and to illustrate my thoughts and the abilities which helped me to transform my 2D concepts into 3D tangible forms. To achieve these aims it was important to choose a suitable material which would help and inspire me to develop and refine the initial concept. My eyes fell upon ancient wood which had been preserved in the fenlands of East Anglia for thousands of years, conserved under anaerobic conditions until the present day. The typical colour of bog oak fades from black to dark brown at the heart. It is one of the most striking timbers I have ever come across.

My intention was to create an atypical piece of furniture. Something where the norm of making furniture will go savage yet retaining a certain amount of utilitarianism. I wanted to overstep the boundaries of function even at the risk of creating a ‘fictional’ piece. The result certainly doesn’t lack the grandeur of the historic period and the quintessential audacity of the soviet avant-garde.

This new concept must be one that meets the needs of the primary and secondary catchments as well as being viewed as a ‘must see and must experience’ destination to attract consumers from the broader tertiary areas and tourists as well. The mix and aesthetic will cater towards the affluent family and additionally will address the surrounding upcoming office/ commercial precincts and therefore must be comprised of a robust and balanced offering to appeal to the larger audience. The quality, composition and interaction of the public realm with the shopping mall and the surrounding environment will be paramount to the development’s success and the convenience and ease of access is of utmost importance and must take into consideration pedestrian traffic, car, MRT and this confluence of elements will become a differentiator and defining element of the mall, the interaction with the surrounding residential and commercial developments will be defined by a large and public access rooftop park/garden.

CONSTRUCTION COUR MARIN/COUR AMBREE-ROOF BRIDGE CONNECTION
Mauritius opened it’s doors to long term foreign residents in 2002 with the introduction of the Integrated Resort Scheme (IRS) whereby the purchase of a property on a government approved, high-end resort results in the receipt of automatic Mauritian residency. The new village occupies the North Eastern corner of the site, a natural headland where the river meets the sea. To the south is the lagoon. COUR MARIN/COUR AMBREE - LOCAL APARTMENTS
The village provides a mixed use, walkable and sustainable community consisting of a mix of local residences and IRS apartments and townhouses, all in the form of courtyard developments and supported by various amenities and communal facilities to enable a self-sufficient environment. Master planning of a 400 acre site with 700m of seafront and 1100m of mature riverside frontage to create a new town over 15 years of approx 10,000 residents plus school, sports and medical facilities, hotels, shopping and offices – phase 1 will comprise 269 houses and apartments plus a hotel – Planning Application 2011. We took 150 IRS and Local apartments to detailed design, with a start on site during 2012.

The Azuri Site is located in the North East of Mauritius, 25km from the capital city of Port Louis, and covers approximately 200 hectares of coastal land intersected by the existing coastal road, with about one third of the site inland of this road. The coastal section of the site was predominantly farmed cane fields protected from the coast by a band of trees and mangroves stretching along the water edge, continuing along the river banks. The inland portion of the site is predominantly dense shrub land. The land is generally elevated from the sea by steep banks of approximately 5 to 8 metres and rises steadily inland to the coast road. A barachois (lagoon) has been formed in the natural bay area that occupies the central eastern edge of the site. A natural promontory at the northern most point acts as a boat jetty. Two small islets sit off the north eastern corner, providing a very picturesque view from the adjacent land.

Seoul, South Korea Professional Work Leonard Design Architects Song-pa Square, located in the heart of the busy Jamsil-dong neighbourhood of Seoul, is a hub for commuters arriving by train, bus and cars and connects two of the largest retail developments in Seoul. LDA was appointed to deliver a modern and dynamic space, improve people flows and enhance customer experience in a challenging existing underground environment. The 160x60m subterranean square is a one level public realm space that provides commuters with shops, restaurants, community facilities and space to rest and relax. Within a tight programme, LDA’s scope consisted of concept design to final tender documentation in 8 months. Ceiling raft sizes have 23 variations labelled CP01 to CP23. Exact dimension to be confirmed by specialist ceiling contractor. However, the radii for curving of each panels and the gap from the ceiling frame are set out in the table below in order to maintain a good proportion. There are 2 materials (crystalline titanium / barrisol). Barrisol rafts can be lit or unlit.

The contrasting visual experiences in the wet zone are emphasized through glossy mosaic tiles used inside Nordic heat bath and Mediterranean steam bath where the narrow space is visually enlarged with corian slats hanging from the curved wall. To avoid the claustrophobic experience which can be triggered by the effect of confinement in small spaces, I let the entry wall to be the full height glazed screen. Melon pink mosaic with abstract charcoal pattern is decorating the mineral bath area in the corner of the zone. In contrast to it, the wall opposite, evokes the rocky side of the subterranean caverns to help the visitors stimulate their senses and let the nature to be the main force in the space. Through the small windows guests can enjoy scenic views of a pine forest or during night one of the most breathtaking skies you can ever see in high altitudes. Such an approach helps not only to fully sense an outdoor recreation but also makes the space completely dissolve in the environment.

Vojka nad Dunajom, Slovakia Individual Professional Work Per-a-per Studio It takes less than one hour to drive from Bratislava to the unique natural reservation of riparian forests spread on the Hungarian borders. Extraordinary sceneries, atmospheric channels and lakes also attract new landowners who see here new opportunities and investments. Vojka nad Dunajom is situated on an island between the old Danube and the “new Danube�, which was created as a part of the Gabcikovo waterworks construction. Many of the houses in Vojka, mainly around the lake, are holiday or weekend homes for Bratislava vacationers. The sun, the temperature climate, the convenient connection to capital city and leafy greenery drawn people to come here. In last years there has been a significant increase in development activity accompanied with loads of controversial issues pointing on the immense value of local nature. The project is designed to meet the demands of big family who want to move out of the city and become a long term residents in more quiet part of Slovakia. The vision of relaxing experiences has captivated both generations.

Bratislava, Slovakia Individual Academic Work Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava There are about 115 thousand people who live in Petrzalka. Majority of its inhabitants work in the other parts of the capital as the lack of commercial, industrial and misex-used activities force them to look for a job in farther areas. The absent economic value is the fundamental obstacle in further improvement which if turn to a success, everyone will benefit from. The aim of the urban study was to create a prominent mix-used development which would link residential areas, along the major axis stretching from the north down to the south through the central part of the district. The biggest problems of the space reflect the shifts in economics, political situation and culture. In many ways they represent issues other post-soviet communistic housing constructions have to face. That is urban density, land use,urban design and mix used zones absence. Another important consideration, was to preserve the forested areas adjacent to the channel and its branches which flows along the axis. The value of these sceneries has become over the years a priceless commodity for local inhabitants who have immense interest of keeping it. 48

KRASNANY SQUARE
Bratislava, Slovakia Individual Academic Work Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava One of the targets was to reinforce the local interaction in order to fill the square with social and cultural lifestyle which is absent for years. After the renovation and reconstruction, the square will become the public centre of the borough and its inhabitants. Design proposal is characterised by two approaches. The secondary road ‘Pekna Cesta’ leading to a future development, which will significantly increase the prestige of the area, splits the square into the east and west part. The supermarket occurs in the eastern part of the square. The western part is mainly residential character. The road creates a distinctive obstacle which is dividing the square into the sections. My previous proposal to create a paved carfree zone to connect the old and new won’t be then possible. The axis road starting at the church corner heading all the way up to the new development will work then as a transition zone between the main public square and its busier counterpart in front of the supermarket. The eastern side of the square works as a pedestrian promenade. This role is generated by the occurrence of the retail store and nearby parking lot. The promenade fuses the spaces for the rest, water and green components. The walkway is a continuation of the route that runs from the church to the next block. 50
