Weld Food Bank Stone Soup Supper Fundraising Event a Success

Saturday April 25, 2015 marked the 13th anniversary of Weld Food Bank’s signature fundraiser, Stone Soup. This very important community event is designed to raise funds and awareness for hunger relief in Weld County. The dinner and auction took place at the Island Grove Event Center with a sold out crowd of 500 guests enjoying a “night of rustic elegance”. Guests raved about local libations, Spring 44 and Coyote’s Southwestern Grill signature cocktails, the “Buckhorn Mule” and “Honey Vodka Marg”, along with six Wiley Roots Beers. Kenny’s Steak House provided a delicious farm inspired culinary dining experience. The entire crowd was deeply moved by Armando Silva’s live performance art piece and a Qittle film by Casey McConnell, featuring Weld Food Bank’s 101 nonprofit partners. Local favorite Bob Purcell and the Outriders brought the evening to a fantastic kick-up-your-boots finish. Stone Soup 2015 corporate, business and community guests raised a record breaking amount of funds for hunger relief in Weld County. About Weld Food Bank. May 2015 Flood

Kiowa Creek on Road P near Wiggins. Kiowa Creek on Hwy. 6 near Wiggins. A normally dry creek bed, the Kiowa Creek near Wiggins has not seen this much water since 1973 when the Town of Wiggins was inundated with water. In the 1980’s a flood plan was implemented by the Town and a levee was built to protect the community. Town officials were prepared to implement some of the protocols on Sunday May 10 if needed.

Also a normally dry creek, the Bijou was flowing with water by late Sunday afternoon. It was during the 1965 flood that there was this much water in the Bijou.

7th Annual Memorial Day Program at Heart of the Plains Cemetery Monday, May 25

Before packing up the grill, beach towels, and bathing suits for an eventful Memorial Day weekend, we should all take a little time to remember what it is exactly we are celebrating. Dating back to the American Civil War when it was known as “Decoration Day,” the practice of placing flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers is not only done in remembrance of the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces, but also to honor the freedom in which they upheld. To help celebrate the true meaning behind Memorial Day, everyone is invited to honor our communities’ veterans at Heart of the Plains Cemetery in south Roggen on Monday, May 25, 2015. Coffee and doughnuts will be served at 8:30 A.M. when the living and deceased veterans will be registered for the roll call. Those names from previous year’s roll calls will be alphabetized and posted; additions or corrections will be taken care of at the registration table. The program will begin at 9 A.M. with patriotic music from the Keenesburg Community Choir. Fr. Carlos Wilson Bello will welcome everyone and Pastor Cory Clark of Kiowa Creek Community Church will give the invocation. Todd Denning will offer the tribute and read the names of living and deceased veterans. American Legion Post #180 will raise the flag; provide a rifle volley, the playing of Taps and the concluding Howitzer salute. The cemetery is located at 38044 County Road 16, Roggen, CO. Bring your lawn chair and join in the true meaning of Memorial Day!

Charley Barnes to Speak at Keenesburg American Legion Memorial Day Celebration

Honoring our Veterans is always a goal for the American Legion Auxiliary ladies. This year they are hosting the fifth annual Honor Our Veterans event. The program will start at 11:00 AM and will include songs presented by our own Kory Brunson, Veteran Roll Call, 21 Gun Salute, TAPS, and a Howitzer salute. The guest speaker is Charley Barnes, afternoon personality on K99. Last year Charley road his motorcycle 10,000 miles in 10 days to raise funds for Honor Flight Northern Colorado (HFNC). HFNC reviews applications from World War II, Korea and Viet Nam Veterans and flies them to Washington D.C. to tour the monuments built in their honor. Starting June 4 – 14, 2015 Charley will embark on his second, and final, 10,000 miles in 10 days endeavor and hopes to raise $50,000 in order to send 50 Veterans to Washington D.C. Charley will join speak on Memorial Day about his experiences, why he is so committed to our Veterans and what he expects from the second marathon trip. Please plan to join them on Monday May 25th, 11:00 AM at the American Legion Post 180 (595 Railroad Ave) in Keenesburg for this wonderful tribute to our Veterans. Lunch will be provided after the event.

And the water rises again in the South Platte, just off Hwy. 39 near Goodrich. The Platte rises and lowers with the seasons, but is normally a trickle of water. However, it flooded in September of 2013 and now again in May of 2015. Other flooding occurred in Morgan and Weld County on the Cache La Poudre, the normally dry creeks: the Antelope and the Lost Creek. Several highways and county roads were closed and some still remain closed. All schools in Morgan County were closed on Monday, May 11 because of the hazardous driving conditions. Flood warnings continue along the Cache La Poudre, but have been lifted as of press time for the South Platte. Although the Platte was expected to crest near Julesburg on May 16. Stay tuned to your local radio stations and emergency management posts on Facebook to keep updated on weather and flood conditions in your area.
