A Piece of the Past: The Old Trail School

Old Trail School gets Fresh New Look with Help from Wiggins Community Church Youth Group

by Sarah Larino Armed with paintbrushes and elbow grease the Wiggins Community Church Youth Group descended onto the Old Trail School this week. The local youth group painted the schoolhouse to raise funds for their upcoming mission trip to South Dakota. However, the spotlight was once again thrown onto this interesting building and its importance in Wiggins’ history. Constructed in 1912 the Old Trail School is today the only completely original one room school house in Morgan County. In 1917 the school district relocated the building from its original plot on the Reed Homestead to a site near Overland Trail, giving the school its name. It was there used to educate the children of rural Colorado families for many years. With the spread of paved roads and automobiles though, use of the Old Trail School declined, as students were consolidated to larger school houses that no longer needed to be within the walking distance. Despite this, the Old Trail School was not abandoned, in 1946 it was once again moved, It was a win-win situation for Wiggins Community Church this time to the Wiggins School Youth Group members and the Wiggins Historical Group. property. Dakota later this summer. When the district eventually expanded their facilities, constructing a new music room, the historic school building was once again at risk of demolition. It was purchased by the Wiggins Historical Group in 1964 and repositioned to its present location on High Street across from the Wiggins Town Park. In 2004 the Historical Group applied for and was granted a listing for the Old Trail School on the National Register of Historic Places. The group also received a grant for the restoration of the school, which was completed in 2009. Just as the school was used to teach rural students in the past, it holds its learning value today. Ron Seiler, President of the Wiggins Historical Group contends that the school is still fostering education to this day. “It’s a teaching aid for Youth Group members hard at work on the Old Trail School the community,” Mr. Seiler explained,”A lot of students from the Wiggins School district come in here and they see the difference between their classroom and what it used to be.” While the school is only open to visitors upon request, it’s utilized for many special programs and is open on Town holidays, such as the Independence Day celebration, and town Christmas festivities. The school also hosts Prairie Day School, where young students from the area get to enjoy a day of teaching as it would have been in 1917. There are no computers, no heat or air conditioning, no water fountains, or modern smart boards. Only a chalk board and a teacher, which provides a glimpse into the past for preschool and elementary students. Prairie Day School will be held June 17 and 18 at the school this year. Now thanks to the Wiggins Community Church youth the Old Trail School has a fresh new look that The inside of the Old Trail School, will allow it to continue to educate which was restored in 2009.
